Steps to Undergraduate Research
1. Complete a research project with an advisor2. Begin writing a manuscript (use resources like
the URO & OSU Writing Center to begin process of technical writing)
3. Make a decision regarding where you can publish
- Could your work qualify for professional journals?
4. Submit your work to professional journals or to JUROS
What is ?
The Journal of Undergraduate Research at Ohio State
• Online Version = juros.osu.edu• Print Version = “Oculus Award Edition”

• Have a citation to your work, that graduate schools and professional committees can view
• Give back to the academic community
• Learn more about the publication and review process
• Being published looks great on a resume!
Reasons to Submit
• No submission fees, completely free• Authors must be undergraduate students
Currently (or within the past year) Part-time or Full-time
• Maintain your copyrightsCan publish elsewhere- If submitting full-length manuscript, contact other
journal of interest for more information
What are my rights?
• Honors Theses• Denman projects (even past & proposed)• REUs or NIH-related projects• Work completed as part of a course at OSU• Independent research not for academic credit• Research part of a larger project• Course papers that emphasize original research • Research and creative projects including fine arts pieces
and performances, films, and other media• Just about anything that your advisor can sign off on
(and that demonstrates scholarly work)
What qualifies as research?
• Manuscripts (12-22 pages)– Formal– Abstract, introduction, materials/methods, results,
discussion/conclusion, acknowledgements, tables/figures
• Feature Articles (1-2 pages)– Narrative– More relaxed writing style– Engage reader
• Abstracts (~200 words)
• Pictures!
What are we looking for?
STEP 1 Breathe. The process is simple.STEP 2 Register as an author at juros.osu.edu.
The Submission Process
STEP 3 Attach manuscript and supplemental files (tables, figures, etc.).
STEP 4 Receive confirmation email.STEP 5 Wait as your manuscript goes through
the review process.STEP 6 Receive your peer-reviewed edits.STEP 7 Perfect your manuscript.STEP 8 Send it back to JUROS via the website.
The Submission Process
STEP 9 Wait as JUROS copy-edits and formats your work.
STEP 10 C’est fini! You may now view your research in the online journal.
* In addition, all accepted online works are entered for consideration for publication in our print annual edition (Oculus Award Edition), printed in early November.
