Fellow Members, Happy New Year and welcome to 2010! This should be an exciting year for all of us. We just made it through one of the most challenging years in the history of many of our businesses. The lessons learned in 2009 will better prepare us for facing today’s consumer, and NARI will be there for you to see that that happens.
As we turn the corner and start a fresh year, we also celebrate NARI’s 25th Anniversary. Over the past 25 years NARI has grown from a small association to an association whom consumers look to for reliable con-tractors and vendors for their home projects. NARI’s reputation would not be what it is today without the strong NARI staff and countless vol-unteers who have guided and lead NARI to its prestigious place in our community. Thank you to everyone who has made a difference with NARI and we look forward to continuing our tradition of excellence in Central Ohio.
Please welcome Mark Kresge, CR of Kresge Contracting and George Kern from Swan Freedom as new Directors on the NARI board. We are excited to reveal what we have in store for our NARI members this year, so keep on top of your newsletters and correspondence to stay in the know.
We will look forward to seeing you at the numerous events planned to celebrate NARI’s 25th Anniversary.

Beginning in April 2010 contrac-tors who do work that disturbs lead-based paint in homes, schools and child care facilities built prior to 1978 need to be EPA certified and follow spe-cific work practices to prevent lead contamination. It takes only a small amount of lead to harm an adult or child.
When talking to clients make sure you provide the “Renovate Right” pamphlet and explain what steps you will take to • Set up the work area • Minimize the dust • Leave the work area clean
Inside the home: • Set up safe work areas and
use appropriate personal pro-tective equipment
• Contain the work area with heavy plastic sheeting
• Post signs to alert residents • Move furniture and belong-
ings out of the work space or cover it with heavy plastic
• Cover fixed surfaces such as appliances and floors
• Turn off forced air heating and air conditioning systems; close all vents in the work area
Outside the home: • Keep non-workers away by
marking the area • Close all windows and doors
near the work area • Use heavy plastic sheeting to
cover the ground and plants • Use heavy plastic sheeting to
cover any play areas near the work area
THE EPA, LEAD & YOU
To minimize the dust: • First mist any area you sand,
scrap, drill or cut • Score the paint before sepa-
rating any components • Do not hammer components
to separate them • Pry or pull components apart • Use a HEPA vacuum attach-
ment when using power tools
When working with lead-based paint DO NOT: • Leave an open flame or torch
burning • Use any power tool or equip-
ment to sand, grind, plane, needle gun or blast without a HEPA vacuum attachment
• Use a heat gun at a tempera-ture higher than 1100° Fahr-enheit.
At the end of the day: • Discard trash and debris in
heavy-duty plastic bags • Discard waste building com-
ponents (i.e. windows, doors, etc.) in heavy-duty plastic sheeting that is wrapped and taped shut
• Do not let workers or equip-ment leave the work area if they are not free of dust or debris
• Always use a HEPA vacuum on the area before leaving for the day
• All workers should wash up and change clothes before going home
• Remind resident to stay out of the work area.
When the job is complete: • Carefully remove all plastic
sheeting, mist with water, fold dirty side shut and tape before disposing of it
• Vacuum all surfaces, including walls, with a HEPA vacuum
• Use a general purpose cleaner to wash all surfaces in the work area
• Inspect the work area carefully for any miniscule dust residue. If you see any particles, re-clean the area.
• Wipe down all surfaces with a disposable cloth
• Compare the cleaning cloth to the EPA cleaning verification card
• Your cleaning cloth must match the cleaning verification card.

The Business Corner Q - In these difficult economic times, I am having a tough time collecting cash from my customers. What can I do?
A - Proactive efforts to collect accounts receivable will positively impact your cash flow. Phone call reminders really do work; train customers to view you as a supplier who expects timely payment. Don’t wait until in-voices are over 90 days old to begin collection efforts. Make phone calls, send emails or fax invoices as soon as 5 days past the due date; surface and resolve issues needing attention; obtain a firm payment date and follow-up to assure promises are kept. Call on larger invoices within two weeks of mailing to verify the customer has the invoice and a payment date is set.
Prepare a weekly management report to track trends such as average col-lection days, aging by category and status notes on large overdue ac-counts. Watch customers whose payment practices slip and do not be afraid to place overdue accounts on hold. If a customer is perpetually late, payment terms can be changed to reward an early payment and pe-nalize a late payment.

2010 RENOVATIONS MAGAZINE
Great Marketing Opportunity
Looking for a way to reach the Central Ohio consumer? What better way than advertising in Renovations?
Renovations is a consumer resource guide and the offi-cial NARI of Central Ohio membership directory. It contains the infor-mation clients need to hire a professional NARI remodeler.
Distribution occurs in many venues including the Central Ohio Home & Garden Show, in members showrooms, through libraries in the area, at realtor offices, at the Best of Fall Show, delivered to selected homes and mailed when requested through our website www.trustnari.org or by phone calls from consumers.
New for 2010! A digital version (with pages that flip) will be available on the NARI of Central Ohio homepage, www.trustnari.org and City-Scene Magazine website, www.cityscenecolumbus.com.
Participation by our membership is vital to the success of the publica-tion. It is our premier vehicle for consumer education.
The deadline for inclusion is fast approaching, to reserve your space contact Gianna Barrett, Betsy Blatnik or Karen Miller of The Publish-ing Group at 614-572-1241.
It is not too early to begin submit-ting 2010 ACE Award Survey forms. It only takes 5 surveys grading out to 3.5 or better to re-ceive an ACE Award. ACE survey forms are kept on file for the year and you may review them at any time. If we receive a form with negative feedback we will contact you so that you may follow up with the client if you desire. You may also request copies of positive comments to utilize in your marketing materials.

LOCAL UNIVERSAL DESIGN CLASS TO BE HELD IN MAY
A local Universal Design Educa-tion Class will be held in May 2010. There will be two class meetings of 4 hours each. The class meet-ings will be scheduled several weeks apart. This education pro-gram will qualify you for certifi-cation (a separate application process and fee). Cost for the education program is $195 each for members and $295 for non-members. To participate in the Universal Design Education Class or for more details contact the NARI Office at 614-895-3080.
CERTIFICATION CLASSES
Interested in becoming a Certified Remodeler or Certified Lead Carpen-ter? Study Groups are forming now! Classes will be held on Tuesday eve-nings 5:30—8:00 p.m. beginning January 19th and run through April 20th. Test date will be May 1st. Application to NARI National must be completed at least 10 days prior to the class beginning as the course ma-terials will be sent directly to you. The application may be found under Step-by-Step at www.nari.org/certify/index.asp For more information or to register for the local class, contact Joyce at the NARI Office 614-895-3080. Study Group cost is $50 per person.
WHAT DOES CERTIFICATION ACCREDITATION MEAN TO YOU?
Did you know NARI is working to receive accreditation for its Certi-fied Remodeler program? To achieve this goal, NARI has to demon-strate that the program is being managed in accordance with a set of industry standards. These standards insure; • the program is administered in a fair and impartial manner • the exam tests what it should • the exam questions are valid and reliable. To realize this achievement, many processes have had to change. Most of these changes are transparent to the members, but others are or will become more visible. Incorporated in the visible changes are inclusion of the Certification Policy Manual in the NARI Policy Manual, a task analysis conducted last year, new procedures for exam proctoring, and a revised exam. Much has been done, but much remains to be accomplished. The end result will be certification that is up to date and is able to be maintained current and relevant to the remodeling industry. Accreditation of the CR is to NARI as NARI’s certification is to you. You will benefit from the change. A third party will have evaluated your level of knowledge and has certified that you are worthy of be-coming certified. Certification will truly set you apart from others in your field and dem-onstrate to your clients that you are credible when it comes to remodel-ing. What are you waiting for? A local study group is now forming. Call Joyce at 614-895-3080 to reserve your spot TODAY!
