Pastor’s Corner

Lent is always a thought provoking time of the year.

The realities of life all come into focus during Lent. We have

just finished celebrating the Jesus’ birth, with all the enthusi-

asm and joy possible. We welcome the infant Jesus into our

lives, and celebrate his childhood, with very little to go on. We

tell the stories with joy and excitement building on the mystery

of Jesus’ unique life. We talk about his teaching to the rabbi’s

and how he did not get into line to walk home after being in

Jerusalem.

Now as we approach Easter, the stories of Jesus’ adult

life come into focus. We hear again the stories of healing, the

preparation of his death, the prayers in the garden, visiting with

good friends, choosing his disciples, and then willingly surren-

dering himself to be humiliated, beaten, and finally crucified.

Jesus did all of this so we might have eternal life. He did it for

us!

Our response to this is to be faithful believers, wor-

shiping within the congregation regularly, and continually giving

thanks to God for what has been, and what will be. We still call

upon Christ to help us out of the doldrums, the anger, the

stress, and the conflict where we find ourselves. We know that

Jesus is able to guide and help us as we address the issues that

concern and challenge us.

As we approach Holy Week, we will experience the

great thrill of a triumphal entry into Jerusalem. It will be a pow-

erful and welcoming, a time when all of us can celebrate our

faith through lively songs and total commitment. The exuber-

ance of Palm Sunday fades quickly, as we look ahead into the

week and realize that Jesus’ arrest, trial, tribulation, and finally

death, are inevitable. We recognize this with a worship service

on Maundy Thursday evening (also, Holy Thursday) on April

13th. Our service will identify the understandings we have with

Jesus in the Upper Room, as he gathered his disciples, shared

with them the sacrament of communion. Jesus then acknowl-

edged that there was one who would turn against him and

would wait to reveal him as Jesus went into the garden to pray.

Good Friday evening, April 14th, we will come together

again to acknowledge and mourn Jesus’ death. We will read

the lessons that tell the story of his death. With the sounding of

nails into the cross, we end the service. Many in our world be-

lieve that is the end of the story, however, we know better!

On Easter Sunday morning, April 16th, we will come

together to celebrate Jesus’ Victory over death! Resurrection

from the dead has occurred, and new life is guaranteed for Je-

sus, and for all people!

An important point to realize is that if you attend

church on Palm Sunday, and then don’t return until Easter Sun-

day, you will miss out on the range of emotion and crucial as-

pects that surround Easter. We need to go through the grief

and despair of Thursday, and Friday, to fully understand the

enormity of Victory on Easter Morning. I hope you will come to

all of our services, to catch the spirit of excitement and joy that

comes on Easter. This is a great time to invite your friends and

family to join us in worship!

Holy Week Schedule:

April 9 -- Palm Sunday, worship at 8:15/10:30 am April 13 -- Maundy Thursday, worship at 7 pm (with Communion)

April 14 -- Good Friday, worship at 7 pm April 16 -- Easter Morning, worship at 8:15/10:30 am Easter Potluck Brunch & Egg Hunt 9:15 am

Have a Happy Easter, I look forward to greeting you at all of the Holy Week Celebrations! Have a Blessed Easter,

Blessings, Pastor Bob

PS: Thank you to all those who help make all of our worship services happen – Choir, Media, Ushers, Sanctuary & Commun-ion Stewards, Greeters, Liturgists, Refreshment volunteers and those who are always here helping, folding bulletins, putting out signs, and setting up visual aspects of worship.
