THE HISTORY OF NYCAASC
1
The Asian American community is diverse, dynamic, andexpanding. Yet, the Asian American voice has often been muted. This year’s theme, Amplify, takes both a retrospective andforward-looking view of the Asian American community. Wecelebrate the accomplishments of the creatives, elected officials, and activists whose work illuminates our stories across thecountry and beyond. However, we also highlight the discrepancybetween the uniformity of narratives that has been promoted andthe diversity of experiences that defines our community. NYCAASC 2020 hopes to represent every facet of Asian America. With the dozens of ethnic groups represented in our community,as well as the unique experiences that emerge at theintersections of Asian American identity and other identities, westrive to ensure that one narrative does not eclipse the others. Wehope to build a chorus of unique melodies that sings in harmony— not only within our community, but also alongside othermarginalized groups. At the fourteenth annual New York City AsianAmerican Student Conference, we encourage conferenceattendees to both make themselves heard and uplift the voices ofothers. This conference takes place on the unceded land of the Lenapepeople.
