Web based pest reporting service

launchedShoalhaven City Council Senior staff joined Mayor, Paul Green in a recent briefi ng of Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Joe Ludwig regarding Council’s web based pest reporting service. The new program allows residents to log on to Council’s website and report sightings of foxes, wild dogs or one of four high priority weeds including lantana south of Jervis Bay and bitou bush, sea spurge or Madeira vine. Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Paul Green said the new program will allow residents the opportunity to log onto an interactive map on Council’s website and place a mark at the exact site where the pest was seen. “By using ‘crowd sourcing’ technology and enabling volunteers to provide information on the area’s pests, Council will be provided with an accurate picture of these locations,” said Mr Green.“Residents will be able to record the date and time of sighting, the nature of the sighting, the number seen and any comments that are relevant. “Frome here, Council, National Parks and their contractors will be able to use the information to concentrate efforts on those areas where the pests have been sighted.”The briefi ng, which took place at Shoalhaven Heads, allowed the Minister to be shown the diffi culties in protecting endangered species located within close proximity to villages and urban areas.Councillor Green said Minister Ludwig was very impressed with Councils web-based pest mapping program, announcing a two year funding offer to allow Council to continue and expand the program. Residents can log onto the mapping program at http://maps.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au/Sightings

Shoalhaven City Council has adopted a simpler process for allocating funding towards local community path construction projects. The project allows local organisations to apply for funding and carry out specifi c path construction works throughout the City. Local community groups in Kangaroo Valley, Swanhaven and Bawley Point have previously applied for funding under the program and with the help of local volunteers have already constructed paths within their towns. With a high level of community interest surrounding the community path construction projects Council has created a more concise budget allocation process.Future funding allocations are to be based on several factors including: • Commencement of the project with no

impediments to its continuation.• The project is ready to commence with

appropriate approvals in place.• Commitment to a starting date.• Volunteer commitment to the project.• An alignment with Council’s priorities for the

construction of the path.• Equitable distribution of funds across the City.

Director of Strategic Planning and Infrastructure and Planning, Peter Adams said the recently adopted budget allocation process would make it easier for community groups to get their volunteer project moving.“The involvement of volunteers in the community path construction projects provides many social, recreational and health benefi ts throughout the City,” said Mr. Adams.“There is already a high level of interest in the project with many community groups undertaking fundraising activities, applying for grant funding and confi rming volunteer assistance in a bid to become involved in the scheme.

Community Path Construction Projects budget allocation

“I would encourage any local organisations who believe they have a pathway project within their town ready to proceed to become involved in this worthwhile project.”This fi nancial year has seen community groups in Woollamia, Kangaroo Valley, Fishermans Paradise and Berry commence work on pathways within their towns. Community groups in Cudmirrah, Kiola, Tomerong and Callala have also expressed an interest in establishing path projects.

Berry Alliance Presidents note:We welcome this increased funding from Council, something we have been lobbying for over a long period of time at Community Consultative Body level and directly with Councilor’s and senior Council staff. We also welcome any further ideas and assistance for our community path projects in Berry – “Tracks to the Future”. Please contact me at the Berry Alliance - [email protected] or on 0449 569 059.

Our community project for a path between the Railway Station and Victoria Street next to the Showground is well under way but still requires additional funds. Please look out for our raffl e (tickets available at the Berry Pharmacy and other locations as well as direct from the Alliance) and our “sausage sizzles” outside the IGA. Donations are also very welcome.

As outlined in the last Town Crier, a Community Review Group (CRG) of 20 Berry residents has been formed by the RTA to refi ne options for the RTA’s “preferred route” for the Princes Highway upgrade around Berry. In a letter to residents the RTA states that this Community Review Group was formed “in response to community concerns and technical studies showing signifi cant measures would be required to maintain noise and visual amenity close to Berry”.

The Review Group consists of residents who live adjacent to the current “preferred route” or who have been active participants in the route selection process to date. BOB (Better Options for Berry) and the Berry Alliance have been given one place each on the 20 person committee and have entered into this process in good faith in the hope that the RTA can come up with the best option for Berry as a whole.

At the meeting of the Community Review Group on 12 October the RTA reported that a review of route options going further north of the “preferred route” indicated that these were not feasible on cost, property severance and environmental grounds. Member for Kiama Gareth Ward, who was present at this meeting, encouraged the Community Review Group to now focus on ways to improve the noise and visual impact of the proposed highway upgrade now that the alignments north of Bundewallah creek have been ruled out (see press release from Gareth Ward on this page and the RTA advertisement on pages 6 and 7).

The RTA’s website for this project:www.rta.nsw.gov.au/fbb provides full details of the meetings of the Community Review

HIGHWAY DESIGN OPTIONS UNDER REVIEW

Group and how this decision was reached. We urge residents to stay informed of progress through this website. The RTA have also committed to place a two page statement in the Town Crier each month to update the Berry community on progress.

The Community Review Group is now reviewing options which lower the alignment of the “preferred route” along North Street in an attempt to get the road surface below natural ground level at this point thus reducing noise and visual impacts. It is also looking at options which reduce the height of the Berry Bridge but this has been constrained by an RTA requirement to build the road to withstand 1 in 100 year fl ood levels.

BOB would like to acknowledge the work of local resident Bruce Ramsay, who is a member of the Community Review Group, and whose expertise in bridge and road construction has meant he has been able to put a number of design options to the RTA which reduce the environmental impact of the “preferred route”. The RTA has a number of these options under active review.

The RTA has been adamant that this is not a route selection process but a refi nement of the “preferred route” to the north of Berry. Once these refi nements have been fi nalised they will be presented to the broader community for comment at a public meeting probably in November.

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward today announced work is continuing to develop new design options for the proposed Princes Highway bypass of Berry.

“The RTA continues to work with the community on improving the design in the north Berry precinct and on resolving the issues of noise and visual impact, however further alignments to the north of Bundewallah Creek have now been ruled out,” Mr Ward said. “It is also important to understand how residents feel about the urban spaces in and around the bypass,” he said.“The RTA will hold a series of community workshops focusing on the planning and design of these spaces to ensure they meet the needs of the community. “This work is particularly important for the north Berry and Kangaroo Valley Road areas. This includes design ideas for the streets, public spaces, recreation areas, landscape, fences, noise walls, paths, materials and views,” Mr Ward said.“The RTA is also continuing to work with the community on the design alternatives for the bridge at the eastern end of Berry, especially concerning its look and sound,” he said.“These discussions will continue to ensure the best possible result for Berry and a public meeting set down for next week will be postponed until the results can be put to the rest of the community,” Mr Ward said.

For further information visit the RTA’s website www.rta.nsw.gov.au/fbb or contact the RTA’s community information line on:1800 506 976.

The Berry bypass community review group held its fourth discussion on 12 October 2011.Member for Kiama Gareth Ward attended the

meeting and clarified the goal of the NSW

Government and the purpose of the group.

He thanked the group for their commitment

to making sure the RTA delivers the best

Berry bypass possible. He affirmed that he

was committed to building the bypass along

the preferred route to the north of town. He

reminded the group that there would be impacts

from the bypass, and this group’s aim is to

mitigate these as best we can.

It was agreed the group was facing several key

project problems:

• the amenity of North Street.

• flooding and management along the

alignment north of North Street.

• the visual impact and amenity of the highway

at Woodhill Mountain Road.

• the current design and aesthetics of the

Berry Bridge.

• noise management and resident impacts,

possible shadowing impacts from the

noise walls and how to manage noise from

bridge deck joints for which we had actions

to investigate, an understanding of some

consequences and some of the mitigation

measures.

The group considered each problem area and

the RTA presented on the actions requested

from previous discussions.

Problem 1: The amenity of North Street. The RTA at the suggestion of members of the

group, has begun exploring the design of a

lowered highway where it runs north of North

Street. This would have implications during

flood times and a mitigation measure would

be to reroute Town Creek. The lowering of the

highway would decrease the height of the noise

walls on the southern side of the highway.

This was considered a viable option and further

investigations will be made.

The RTA investigated moving the alignment

further to the north on the other side of

Bundewallah Creek. This design would require

the construction of bridge or viaduct structures

to cross over the Bundewallah Creek floodplain.

It would create more property severance issues

on rural properties. The rough strategic cost

estimate is $130 million over the current cost of

$170 million (totalling $300 million). This option

around the north of Berry is not considered

economically viable.

Problem 2: Flooding and management along the alignment north of North Street. The RTA confirmed ongoing discussions with

Shoalhaven City Council about flood mitigation

and management in this area. Council had

attended a site visit with group members on

28 September. The rerouting of Town Creek

was discussed and the suggestion to move

the swale through farming property. This is

considered a viable alternative with more

investigations needed. Discussions with Council

and property owners will be ongoing.

Problem 3: The visual impact and amenity of the highway at Woodhill Mountain Road. The RTA has been working with members of

the group on design alternatives to reduce the

visual impact and amenity of the highway at

Woodhill Mountain Road.

To date these have examined how to lower the

bridge with a deeper cutting into the ridge.

One option could lower the height of the bridge

by about 10 metres at the eastern end. The

consequences would be a large environmental

Berry bypassCommunity review group update

www.berryalliance.org.auNOVEMBER 2011 The Town Crier - Page 7

impact with the cutting into the mountain and

managing the 540,000m3 of surplus spoil. How

to resolve the excess spoil was debated, with

some to be used on the proposed adjacent

Berry to Bomaderry upgrade. The RTA agreed

more detail was required and this needed to

be looked at further. There was also discussion

around how to reduce the amount of spoil

excavated.

The strategic cost estimate for this option is

$250 million, $80 million over the current cost of

$170 million. This is mostly due to the expenses

associated with the spoil.

Ideas on how to reduce the cost will continue to

be discussed and investigated.

The RTA will:

• work closely with community members on

further options in this area.

• provide the group with more detail on cost

assumptions.

• list and investigate management options for

excess spoil.

Problem 4: The current design and aesthetics of the Berry Bridge. The bridge proportions and how an urban

design approach could improve the proposed

structures was briefly discussed. It was agreed

that the group was not ready for this detail and

that urban design in relation to the bridge be

parked for a future discussion.

Problem 5, 6 & 7: Noise management and resident impacts, possible shadowing impacts from the noise walls and how to manage noise from bridge deck joints. The group viewed a 3D animation showing the

lowered highway and the shadowing that would

be generated over the shortest day in winter.

Shadows from the proposed noise wall began to

impact some properties on North Street about

15 minutes before the sun dipped below

the escarpment.

An action has been to examine the

technology behind:

• bridge deck joints, and

• the type of road surface to assess how noise

can be reduced.

The RTA committed to addressing these

items in the detailed design with the aim of

reducing noise.

Study areaThe group discussed financial feasibility

of options. The group largely accepted the

bypass needs to be economically viable and

understood that the project competes on a

state wide level for funding. Social impacts,

environmental impacts and financial feasibility

are often a trade off.

The group at large advocated for a focus on

the current alignment and the design options

available generally along and in the vicinity

of this alignment. This was noted by the local

member. There will be future meetings to work

to improve design/alignment.

This will involve continuing with two discussions:

• a focus on the bridge to improve its

aesthetics and design. The aim to lower the

bridge and reduce its impacts has not yet

been achieved.

• a focus on reducing the impact of the

highway on the north Berry precinct and

examining appropriate landscape and urban

designs for this newly created space.

Meeting notes and the presentations are on the

community review group documents page on

RED CROSS BERRY BRANCH

Remembrance Day11 November 2011Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute silence at 11 am on 11 November, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed confl icts.

The Berry RSL Sub-Branch Remembrance Day Commemoration Service will be observed at the Cenotaph in Alexandra Street on Friday 11 November, commencing at 10.40am with the observance of the silence at 11.00am.

All members of the Berry community are invited to attend the service.

This year, a contingent of former members of 9RAR will be attending on the invitation of the Sub-Branch and a local ex-member Peter Bell (see picture) who was a member of the assault Pioneer Platoon.

The months of September and October have been very busy for Red Cross- Berry Branch. The Australian Army Band Sydney Concert was again an impressive performance. The audience, including some members of Berry Public School Band and Ensemble, were all delighted with the performance. Before the concert the school children were welcomed behind the scene to interact with the Band members as they prepared to perform. To be on both sides of the fence proved an invaluable experience for the children. The Band love to play in the Shoalhaven and are appreciative of our lovely venue. The concert was a Zone 7 Fundraiser involving 6 Branches from Shoalhaven Heads to Ulladulla. A total of $7856.45 was raised for the Red Cross Emergency Services Teams in Disaster Relief and Recovery work.We wish to thank you for attending to make our event a success. Raffl e winners were Mr Gary Hanchard of Shoalhaven Heads, Sandy of Milton as well as Ms Fran Hasford who we found sitting in the audience!

Our October Garage Sale, despite rain was also a success, so much so that there will be an instant replay on the November Fair Day Sunday 6th November at address: 1 Windsor Drive Berry. So, it is not too late to clean that cupboard and/or just come along to buy anything wearable, useable and saleable. Phone Sheila on 44 642 049 for more information.

Members attended the Country Zone 7 Conference with guest Speakers including Di Jay, Executive Director NSW, Paul Ell Learning for Life Program and Sam Hartridge International Humanitarian Law and our Regional Manager Judy Harper. There is no doubt members fl uffed there feathers feeling proud to be a small cog in a very big wheel that turns slowly at the local level as well as internationally.

The new Red Cross offi ce has opened, Level 1/57 Graham Street, Nowra, Phone: 44 230 053, 44 284 900 and 1800 621 433. The offi ce will become the main Offi ce and the administrative base for the Southern Region. Currently in the Southern Region we have established and are providing community based services including; Breakfast Clubs, Junior Red Cross, Youth Challenge, Save A Mate, Telecross, Community Visitors Scheme and Hands on Care, Personal Support Volunteers and the Young Parents Program. The Red Cross Shop remains open in Schofi elds Lane.

Red Cross - Berry Branch meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at 2pm, Berry School of Arts. Hope to see you there

This month’s novel from English author Chris Cleave has all the ingredients for a good contemporary read. It deals with the polarizing subject of asylum seekers and detention centres. It also focuses on exploitation, rampant gang activity and the endemic corruption of contemporary Nigeria; which seem to be so much a part of the fabric of post colonial Africa. It is really a long short story that could be read in two or three sittings though the plot is certainly involved with many twists and turns and an ending that is not necessarily predictable.

It is written through the eyes of the two central characters, “Little Bee” a young refugee girl from Nigeria, and Sarah a magazine editor who is “burning the candle at both ends” while at the same time living in a dysfunctional relationship. Many readers could identify with Sarah who also has to deal with a Batman-obsessed son Charlie. Another subsidiary character is Little Bee’s fellow detention centre inmate from Jamaica, Yevette, who brings a further insight into how the incarcerated deal with their precarious situation in a philosophical and humorous manner.

It has several confronting scenes which were by no means predictable. Each chapter is written alternatively from the perspective of Little Bee and in turn Sarah until the fi nal climactic chapter. It is easy to like the courageous but innocent Little Bee and the much worldlier Yevette, and be critical of the English characters that come across as indulgent and indifferent to the situations of others less fortunate. Is this the inspiration for the title of the novel as it fl ips between the two continents and diverse civilisations?

The story certainly has a ring of truth and is told in an interesting way, with many Jamaican and Nigerian idioms and other regional patterns of speech to add authenticity to the dialogue. Some later research revealed the author had some credibility with the subject matter having worked for a short time in a detention centre, and having also lived in West Africa as a child. In this situation it could have been easy to write the novel as a series of political statements or personal experiences but the author largely avoided this trap. The Berry blokes were pretty much one in terms of the story being a good subject matter on which to base a novel but some of the blokes felt there were several gaps in the storyline and a number of implausible events.

In many respects a lot of plot had been squeezed into a relatively short book and this could have been at the heart of the blokes generally feeling less than satisfi ed and wanting more. This is only the second novel for Cleave, who also doubles as a journalist/contributor for a major English newspaper. This brought another subject into a lengthy debate amongst the Berry blokes as to whether a competent journalist can translate their writing skills from that medium to the longer and more intricate form of a novel.

There are a number of references at the end of the book for those interested in furthering their knowledge on the subject matter and the UK’s nine on-shore detention centres.

Over 1800 submissions were received by Shoalhaven City Council on the draft Shoalhaven Local Environment Plan (SLEP 2009) during the 14 week period the SLEP was open for public comment. Council staff will review the submissions and produce a report which will be presented to Council at a date to be confi rmed. The Berry Alliance and other Community Consultative Bodies are asking Council to make the content of the submissions public so the level of public feeling on specifi c issues can be gauged. The Berry Alliance made submissions on the following issues which are important to Berry and the wider Shoalhaven:

• Height of Buildings

• Moving Land Previously Zoned Rural 1(c) into a Residential Zone R5

• Loss of Large Residential Blocks and Open Space from Huntingdale Park Development as prescribed in DCP 70

• Nomination of Berry Urban Conservation Area as conservation Area in Draft LEP

• Land Uses in Rural Zones Which Compromise Zoning Objectives

• Protection of Habitat Corridors

• Strengthening of Biodiversity Clauses

• Inappropriate Land Uses in Environmental Zones

The feedback from the Community Forum that the Berry Alliance held in September has been overwhelmingly positive and we will endeavour to ensure those who gave us their contact details are kept informed on the issues raised at the Forum. We urge all those who sent in submissions on SLEP 2009 to now follow up with Council to ensure the process in dealing with these submissions is transparent and considers the will of the people.

Shoalhaven City Council is currently upgrading a 1.7 kilometre section of Coolangatta Road, Coolangatta as part of its Capital Works Program. The works, between Swamp Road and Agars Lane at Far Meadow, will include the removal of road side hazards, widening and strengthening the pavement, installation of guardrail as well as the provision of sign posting and delineation improvements.Shoalhaven Water has taken the opportunity to upgrade a section of the Coolangatta Road water main, which has been designed to be compatible with the new road works.Shoalhaven City Council Director of City Services and Operations, Bill Paterson said Stage one of the work, which commenced in May, began with the widening of culverts, installation of the water main and relocation of power poles. Mr. Paterson said additional funding had now been provided to implement Stage two of the works including the strengthening and widening of the pavement.“These works will signifi cantly upgrade the highly utilised section of Coolangatta Road, between Swamp Road and Agars Lane and will assist in providing safer driving conditions in this area,” said Mr. Paterson.During the works, the existing road surface condition is being monitored and repairs have been undertaken. “Temporary pavement markers have been installed along the centreline to improve the defi nition of the travel lane and potholes are being repaired as required.”“Council apologises for any inconvenience these necessary works may cause, however I believe the community will be more than pleased with the upgraded road” said Mr. Paterson.Works are expected to be complete by early 2012 depending on favourable weather conditions.

Coolangatta Road upgrade work continues

On the weekend of 13th – 15th October, Rick ‘Gunnery’, Luke Bramley, Ross Goodger, Breeden O’Riley and Aaron Bramley travelled to Port Macquarie for the 2011 Australasia Fire-fi ghter Championships. The team competed against the best fi re-fi ghters in Australia and New Zealand. The weekend started off well with Luke Bramley scoring a personal best time of 8.99 sec. in the ladder event - which placed him 15th out of 60 competitors. The weekend just kept getting better for the Berry t eam with Breeden and Ross winning a bronze medal in the two man hose hydrant event; the boys narrowly missed out on 1st place by one hundredth of a second! The Berry team were placed fi rst in all motorised events on aggregate points, and second in all the hose hydrant events.

At the culmination of the weekend the Berry team brought home fi ve bronze and two silver medals - not to mention being on the podium

seven times in the ten events! With 28 teams competing, this was a mammoth effort from the Berry team who narrowly missed out on the top spot by 10 points.

The Berry team were runners up for the entire event, scoring 113 points to Kelso Brigade with 123 points.

Hopefully next year the team can go one better and bring home the state cup.The strong presence and fantastic results of the Berry team has certainly put Berry on the map in Australia and overseas. The team would like to thank the rest of our station crew who are able to stay at home and man the station and protect the town and surrounds in case of an incident while we compete at these events.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF BERRY RURAL CO-OP

On Tuesday 22nd November the next Historical Society lecture will be held. It will be Robyn Mathers and John Miller giving a presentation in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Berry Rural Coop.

Although the lecture is for members visitors are welcome. Come and hear about the history of an important institution and the place it has had in the development of your town.

The lecture will be at 7pm in the Auditorium of the Berry Masonic Village and will be followed by light refreshments.

This is the fi rst photo of members of the Berry Men’s Shed in the new building. The photo was taken in September. We are still settling in and one of the biggest jobs is to fi nd a new home for all the equipment and tools moved over from the old Shed. “We were able to get rid of a lot of material from the old Shed before we moved, fi nding a new home in better storage areas, will in the long run be easier for all members” said manager John Hudson.

The Shed has enjoyed a lot of visitors since relocating and members are preparing for a very large group of people to come through the doors following the opening by the Governor of NSW on 18th November. “We plan to have a number of our members show the public the facility and the equipment we use on that day”. “Because of the expected large numbers fi ling through the new Shed on opening day we will not be having any actual demonstrations of the equipment” said Richard Wiseman

Zone friendship Day was held at the Berry School of Arts last month. Friendship Day represents garden clubs from all over the south coast visiting a nominated garden club. The event is held annually amongst the zone. The last time Berry held the function was 6 years ago. Guests

spent the day listening to well known speakers, buying plants and just enjoy everybody’s company. This year it was the turn of the Berry Garden Club and as part of the day the Berry Men’s Shed provided lunch for those who choose not to bring their own. The menu of 3 choices was circulated to the various garden clubs before hand and we ended up serving over 150 meals. This is something we have not attempted before and it was particularly well received.

Opening day 18th NovemberThe Berry Uniting Church centre incorporating the new Men’s Shed will be opened on Friday 18th November. The sub committee has held a number of meetings with the church council and most action points are well underway. Special invitations are being sent out to members of the church congregation, computers for seniors and shed members. This special invitation will include lunch with the Governor. A general invitation to the people of Berry will be placed in the Town Crier along with a direct mailer through the post offi ce. We expect up to 400 people will attend.

Next month will see the inaugural Ings Family Encouragement Awards at Berry Public School.

When John and Judith and Grace Ings left our community last year the Alliance and the community were keen to do something in recognition of all their hard work and commitment to our community. We held a function as a farewell and that doubled as a fundraiser. In discussions with John and Judith they made it clear that they would like any funds raised to go to public school education, not to them or for Grace as a scholarship.

We have now finalised the details of these awards and at Berry Public School’s Presentation Evening there will be two “Encouragement Awards”, each of $250 that will be given to two students who are going to be at Berry Public School in 2012. The funds will be administered by the Headmaster of the school and can be used for anything related to the winner’s education.

There will also be an Encouragement Award for a Berry Public School student going on to Bomaderry High School in 2012. This amount will be $500 and administered in a similar way by the Headmaster of Bomaderry High School.

The awards have certain criteria for them and no doubt the school will have the very difficult decision as to who the winners will be. The Alliance is very grateful to Peter Burney and other staff and parents at Berry Public School for their support and assistance in these awards.

We are also particularly appreciative of all those community members who contributed to this very worthwhile cause last year. With this money raised and a contribution from the Berry Alliance we have sufficient funds available to make this an annual award for the next three years and will be looking at finding a way to extend the awards further into the future.

Berry Public School is an extraordinary and vital part of our community and we hope that in this small way we can help.

Go Berry, Go!

Grandparent’s Day is an annual event held at Berry Public School where all the students from Kindergarten to Year 2 invite their grandparents to the school for a special performance. This year’s Grandparent’s Day, held on Thursday the 22nd September, was another huge success. Children aged between the ages of 5 and 8 years old sang, danced, recited poetry, played music and read descriptions of their grandparents for the one and a half hour performance. It is estimated that around 500 spectators made up of parents, grandparents and even great grandparents made their way to Berry Public for the show. “It was a fantastic turnout from both parents and grandparents alike and I could tell by the looks on their faces how much they enjoyed the show,” commented Peter Burney, the Relieving Principal. “The students did an amazing job this year and I did have many comments from people about how impressed they were with what they saw which is always nice to hear.”After the performance the children escorted their families to the classrooms to view their school work, read the descriptions they had written about their grandparents and thenhad a picnic lunch.

BERRY PRESCHOOLBERRY PRESCHOOLTerm four is in full swing at Berry Community Preschool. For the older children, this means a couple of visits to primary school for orientation days - and a sample of the delicious Blueberry Bites summer canteen menu. The second week this term also saw a special return visit to the preschool from some of the class of 2010, who shared with the pre-schoolers some of their experiences at “big school”.

A highlight at the start of this term was the arrival of the new climbing play equipment - which was greeted with enthusiasm. The equipment arrived courtesy of the hardworking fundraising

committee and the community support shown for the annual ball. This month we have a special thank you to the Mini Berry Milko’s Connor and Keanu Clarke. In a lovely gesture the two boys generously donated a percentage of their earnings from last term to the preschool.

This term the preschool is offering extended hours to families if needed. Normal preschool hours are 9am to 3pm, but the preschool is offering additional preschool care from 8.30-9am and between 3-4pm.

Once again there are excursions planned for the fi nal term,

including the ever popular trip by train to Kiama. The preschool’s annual general meeting will be held in December and new recruits are needed so we are asking parents to consider being part of the committee.

If anyone would like more information on what being a committee member involves please talk to Jenny or Janelle or contact the preschool on:4464 1764.

Hudson Scully puts the new climbing equipment to the test.

LandcareSpring F loweringNative PlantsThe genus of Solanum contains some of the most important species of plants available to us. These include the Potato and Eggplant. In the 1500 or so species known worldwide there are about 117 in Australia many regarded as weeds. Seen recently in the Strongs Road Landcare site were two species in full fl ower. One was Violet Nightshade (S. brownie). This bushy shrub grows to 3m. high to 3m across with soft grey leaves that are lanceolate to 10 cm with some slender spines on stems and leaf surfaces. Purple fi ve pedal fl owers occur in spring and it grows well in a sunny position. This is truly a great native plant to encounter. The other Solanum was less obvious being the small ground cover plant Eastern Nightshade (S. pungetium). Its leaves are to 10cm with dentate margins. The fi ve petal purple fl owers are on soft curving stalks and these and the leaves are covered in 1 cm spines.

Another local Solanum may be better known to you, the Kangaroo Apple (S. aviculare). This opportunistic shrub, often the fi rst to come up in disturbed soil, grows to 4 m. high and 5 m. across. Its juvenile leaves are easily identifi ed by their three or fi ve lobed margins to 20 cm. Their fl owers in spring are purple with fi ve

joined petals and a yellow centre around the stamen, typical of the Solanum. Their fruit are egg-shaped, orange or red. This plant usually competes with the wild tobacco weed which often dominates. A good specimen of Kangaroo Apple is at the Broughton Vale Landcare site.

These are a small example of the fl owering native plants which have been on display to the observant. Some of the others which have been delighting the writer are along the road sides around Berry. Such as: Travellers Joy (Clematis aristata), a white native clematis climber in the road side trees; Indigofera australis, a 2 m. high 2m. across, sparsely branched with sprays of purple pea-fl owers; False Sarsaparilla (Hardenbergia violacea), a well-known ground cover – climber with purple pea-shaped fl owers; Yellow Guinea Flower (Hibbertia scandens) a climber which seems to like climbing above the Kikuyu on barbwire fences; Rice fl ower (Ozothamnus diosmifolius) is an obvious roadside fl ower, an erect shrub 2.5m. high 2m. wide with 2cm. linear leaves and clusters of ball shaped fl owers. All of these fl owering native plants are road side in Tindalls Lane

The fl owering native trees have given a wonderful display following the wet winter. Most outstanding was the Brown

Kurrajong (Commersonia fraseri). A good example encountered was at the boat ramp on Back Forest Road.

These plants will have fi nished fl owering by the time you read this. Keep in mind their names and identifying features and look out for them next spring. If you want to know more about the fl owering Native Plants of Berry join a Landcare Site work group.

An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fi tted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back to the doctor for a test a month later. The doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased you can hear again.” To which the gentleman said, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times!”

I like that story, but it reminds me of something. It reminds me of our need to listen to one another. Often in life you fi nd out things you never knew about people, even those you were close to, at their funeral.

As a community of faith we encourage people to share their stories of life and of faith. To share stories of their life’s journey and their stories of God at work through the ups and downs of life. When you do that in a community that ranges in age from 100 years old to newborns you get a big spread of experience. The word we often use for these times is testimony.

Just recently we had three people share some of their life and faith journey at our Sunday services. I was inspired by hearing

what they had come through, what they had experienced of God through it all, and what they had learnt about themselves and God through that process. Sometimes you just need to stop and listen to those around you a bit more.

But it also reminds me to stop and listen to the testimony of Jesus. Just like our friends or family, we can think that we know their story, but when we sit and listen we can realise there was a lot more to it than we fi rst thought. The testimony of Jesus is a lot like that even for those that have followed him for a long time.

So I encourage us all to listen well to one another. But to also take time to hear the testimony of Jesus again. It is put in the bible like this…“This is the testimony in essence: God gave us eternal life; the life is in his Son”. [1 John 5:11 TM]

If you take time to do this I believe you will get to know and be inspired by others, and get to know Jesus in the life giving way that he intends. God bless from Brendan at Berry Community Church…see advert for details.

Shoalhaven Heads Public School is celebrating

its 150th Birthday or Sesquicentenary and invites everybody to

join the staff, students and parents on Thursday

24th and Saturday 26th November 2011 to celebrate

this historical milestone. An Offi cial Ceremony encompassing performances by students, the opening of the new Hall and the raising of the Time Capsule buried in 1986 will be held at the school on Thursday. On the Saturday afternoon, from 12-5pm, the school will host a 150th birthday party. There will be classrooms open and historical displays, while a sideshow alley, face-painting, novelty races, a waterslide, infl atable obstacle course, jumping castle and laser skirmish will keep the children entertained.

The grown-ups will enjoy live music, a variety of stalls and the opportunity to buy or win something special at the giant auction and chocolate wheel. We have received amazing support from local businesses and from Australian and overseas celebrities including Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Lleyton Hewitt, Ian Thorpe, Megan Gale, Tobie Puttock, Graeme Base, Wayne Grady, Liz Ellis and the Australian Women’s cricket team to name a few, so there are some fantastic items going up for auction.

Wristbands allowing unlimited goes on the Infl atable attractions and the Laser Skirmish are available to pre-purchase for $20 (only $10 for each additional sibling or parent) from the School (available on the day for $25). For more information, to view the auction catalogue or purchase a wristband, commemorative wine, booklet or tea towel, please contact the School Offi ce or visit the School website. Shoalhaven Heads Public School

150th Birthday PartyBerry Garden ClubBerry Gardens Festival was a great success, weather much better than forecast, indeed very good for walking. Eight very different gardens gave visitors a lot to enthuse them and many were seen noting names for future reference, perhaps to add to their own gardens, perhaps for interest in identifi cation.

Great trees of interest – is a magnifi cent specimen of Quercus, an Asian Oak the seed of which was collected by the owner when plant hunting. A mature specimen of Horse Chestnut, Aesculus hippocastanum, attracted many visitors. This tree is uncommon in this area, however many people will have been attracted to this wonderful tree common in street, parks and gardens in the UK and Europe. It is native to north Greece and Albania. The fruit, commonly called conker, is a source of pleasure to young children, good for throwing at each other!

A very large specimen of a member of the Cactus family, I think it is Pachycerus springlei, was a feature of a garden planted in the 1950’s. The generic name means thick wax taper, a reference to the shape of the erect branches. It is native to Mexico and southern California. Also in this garden, at fi rst sight reminding one of a Banana, was Strelitzia Nicolai, it has white and blue fl owers and grows to a height of approximately 4 m. The common Strelitzia reginae, Bird of Paradise, is now a common feature in local gardens. Both are native to South Africa. The plants in this garden are those now popular in areas of low rainfall.Malus ioensis ‘ Plena’ is a crab-apple native to mid-west USA. The beautiful double pink fl owers cover the tree; it is a lovely sight and suitable to small gardens.

Highly scented white fl owers attracted visitors to a tall shrub Acokanthera oblongifolia (syn. Carissa spectabilis). This native to South Africa bears the common name Bushman’s Poison; liquid from the black berries was used on the tips of arrows to kill prey. It is rarely seen in gardens to-day. Its poisonous status would not be the reason; our gardens contain many plants with poisonous parts.

Patterned trunks attracted me and I am sure many others to the trees in another garden, these lined a section of the garden therefore ensuring shade and peace; a wonderful place to sit in summer.

Colour featured in a garden of Brugmansia, commonly called Angel’s Trumpet, Agapanthus, Canna and Bougainvillea. Not the varieties commonly seen but hybrids bred by the garden owner. This garden had a tropical feel even though one looked out to dairy farming country. A lesson in good design in a town area provided visitors with inspiration. Vegetables, herbs, fruit trees supplied food, outdoor seating was surrounded by lush planting and views over areas of interest.I very much enjoyed my visit to all the gardens; thank you to the owners. I return home with plant lists and great satisfaction of time well spent.

Hazel King.

Leprosy Mission NewsBERRY CWA NEWSThe majority of Australians believe that leprosy

was eradicated many years ago. We read in a report received this month, from our Head offi ce in Victoria, that nothing could be further from the truth. Six years after the World Health organisation (WHO) declared that leprosy was offi cially eliminated in India, doctors and offi cials are now warning that the disfi guring disease is spreading in poverty-stricken pockets of the country. The Head of World Health in India, Nata Menabde, told AFP in an interview that nearly a third of India’s districts needed urgent attention to address the spread of new infections.

There are approximately 209 out of 640 districts where the number of new cases now exceed the WHO target of less than 10 new cases per 100,00. Ten per cent of the new cases occurring in India involve children; this shows us that the transmission rate is very high.

We, as a committee, who are working towards the eradication or control of Leprosy hear this news with concern and renewed commitment to continue our fund raising to assist those less fortunate that ourselves, and to relieve the suffering of those affected by leprosy. Your ongoing support is always valued.

The “Awareness Day “ street stall was a huge success with many goodies on offer – designer tea cosies, uniquely designed tea towels, bags etc. and the ‘all important’ scones, cakes, pickles, and delicious lemon butters. The colourful pinnies emblazoned with “Not Just Tea and Scones” were worn for the fi rst time and indeed the “models” wearing them looked very charming. Thank you to all who supported us on this day.

“A dame with apron worn on waistdoth ready one her fare to taste.”

The International Day held recently showed off the hard work of the Berry Primary School. Their charts and models were a credit to them. Prizes were awarded to the appropriate winners but I’m sure that the judges had a very hard time when making their decisions. We will look forward to the International Day in 2012.

Planning for the NSW State 2012 Conference is well under way. The venue at Blacktown Workers' Club will be hosted by the Nepean Group. This will be a momentous occasion as it will mark the CWA, NSW 90th year.

The Berry Branch has held its annual AGM, and offi ce bearers' positions were readily fi lled. Congratulations to all. Interesting reports from the various 2011 offi ce bearers were read and accepted. President Marcia Miller’s report was very complete, and it was encouraging to be reminded at length of what that had been accomplished in the past year. The Secretary's and Treasurer’s reports complemented Mrs Miller's report, and now we realise just how busy we were and diligent in the money-raising area. What a year! But weguess there waits for us, something equivalent in 2012.

Mrs Suzanne Garrett, president of the Wollondilly group, presided over AGM and concluded the afternoon with an interesting talk on her trip to Thailand. She feels very much at home in “the land of smiles” having visited there a number of times. Of special interest to her and the work that she does is the House of Grace (which seeks to rehabilitate girls that were caught up in prostitution), and the House of Love (which cares for orphaned boys). We were very encouraged by a lady whose love for these people is so evident.

A warm welcome to our newest member, Mrs Jean Sealy, we will look forward to her being at future gatherings.

In conclusion I would like to apologise for my error in October's issue. Janine Casey was the second prize winner for the Butterscotch Cake, and not as previously advised.

For further information contact Marcia on 44643187, Marie on 44232164, or visit the CWA web site at www.cwaofnsw.org.au , or write to Secretary, PO Box 321, Berry 2535.

Thank you to all those people who attended our most recent production of Tennessee Williams ‘A Street Car Named Desire’.

We hope you enjoyed this iconic production! We will be following production week with our regular group night which is held on the fi rst Wednesday of the month.

On Wednesday, 2nd November we will be reading ‘The Scarlet Rose’, a play written by one of our new members, Lisa Perritt. It is based on the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast. It is also the proposed play for our fi rst production of 2012.

So if you’ve been thinking about becoming involved in the Berry Drama Group, there is no time like the present. The play reading will start at 7.30pm and will be held in the upstairs room of the School of Arts, Berry.

All welcome.

ROTARYOne of the major community projects currently being undertaken by the Rotary Club of Berry-Gerringong is the construction of a concrete community cycleway/walkway linking the town with the Berry Hospital … stage 1 of the Rotary Circuit.

Despite recent wet weather and boggy conditions, Club members have managed to lay a further 25 lineal metres of concrete.

Members are looking forward to working on the next section which will commence at the top of Tannery Rd, adjacent to Pulman St. This will be the fi rst section of the pathway where the Club will be inserting the initial delivery of engraved pavers received from the manufacturers. For those people who applied for an engraved paver some months back, you will soon be able to see your name set in concrete. If your application was made in more recent times, your paver will be included in subsequent pours, hopefully prior to Christmas, conditions permitting.

A number of businesses have also shown their support for the community pathway by purchasing one or more of the large logo style pavers as shown in the accompanying photo. Businesses supporting the project with logo pavers include The Arbour; The Treat Factory; Ray White Berry and Huckleberry Home.

ENGRAVED PAVERS TO BE CEMENTED IN HISTORYA number of other businesses are also supporting this Rotary project with either donation of materials or labour. Rotary thanks everyone for their support.

There is still an opportunity for other businesses, you or your loved ones (or even pet) to have that special engraved paver set into the Rotary Circuit. It’s your unique chance to cement your name in local history. Individual pavers cost $50, whilst double pavers cost $110.

To obtain an Application Form for Engraved Pavers email Grahame Sweeney at [email protected]

New Years Eve Family Fun Night Planning has commenced for the next major fundraising activity by the Club … the annual New Years Eve family fun night at the Berry Showground. It is sure to be another fantastic night with lots of entertainment, displays, good old fashioned kid’s games, food and market day variety stalls. All concluding at 9pm, when the night skies will light up with a magnifi cent fi reworks display.

Potential new members are always welcomed at the Rotary Club’s weekly dinner meeting at the Berry Bowling Club. To fi nd out more, interested persons should contact the Club’s Membership Director David Ensor on 0412 418 515.

A sigh of collective disappointment could be heard across the Shoalhaven last Saturday morning as the Berry Riding Club Pink Ribbon Horse Festival was postponed due to the wet weather. The festival is a fun fi lled weekend of dressage and a funkhana and is Berry Riding Club’s annual fundraiser for Breast Cancer and is a great opportunity for riders of all ages to dress-up in pink for a good cause.

The good news is that the club has rescheduled the weekend to the 17th and 18th December 2011. A special thanks though to Berry Trivia @ The Great Southern Hotel for their generous donation towards the weekend, the donation gave Berry Riding Club the opportunity to purchase some much needed pink bunting, that will complement the pink riders and pink decorated horses. This will be a great visual spectacular on the weekend of the 17th and 18th December 2011 so do not hesitate to come along, the dressage and funkhana make a great day out, so come along to the Berry Showground and join us in raising money for this important charity.

Events though continue for the club with our show jumping competition continuing on the 1st Saturday of every month at the Berry Sporting Complex, North St, Berry.

At the December Show Jumping Competition the club will be also holding the Annual Geriatric Cup; this event is only open to the “older” competitor and is a lot of fun.

Saturday 19th November is the club’s presentation night; all members are encouraged to attend.

Welcome to Berry Evening VIEW Club news. Our Guest Speaker for our meeting on 21st September was Robyn Florance. Robyn is a well-known historian and has written many books on the history of the local area. Robyn spoke on the process and the time required when researching her books. We can only imagine any historical research would be very time consuming. Her current book, Broughton Village in Past Times, will be launched at 2pm, Saturday, 29th October, at the Showground. I am sure she will be delighted to see you at the launch.

Christmas is creeping up on us and we are starting to get Christmas function invitations from VIEW Clubs in our area. On 18th November, St. George’s Basin VIEW will be having their Christmas function; Shoalhaven Heads VIEW will also be having theirs on the same day. This is followed by Nowra Day VIEW with an Aussie Christmas at Bomaderry R.S.L. commencing at 11am. Next will be Culburra Beach Christmas Luncheon, commencing at 11am. This will be held at Culburra Beach Bowling Club.

Then we must not forget our own Christmas dinner, which will be held on 21st. December. More details in the next edition of the Town Crier.

Our Coffee Mornings continue to be a great success. Thursday 3rd November will be our next Coffee Morning and it will be held at Table Talk cafe, commencing at 10.30am. Anyone is welcome to come along and bookings are not required.

PLEASE NOTE; our new postal address is P.O. Box 76, Berry. Would all associations please record this change for future correspondence. Thank you

Zonta

Zonta – Advancing the status of women and girls locally and internationally.

CongratulationsWe did it!! What a great day Sat 8th October turned

out to be. This was the Zonta Club of Berry’s BIG

day. 4000 Birthing Kits were scheduled to be

packed by members and volunteers at the Berry

School of Arts.

Zonta member Mary Seelis, our co- coordinator, and

a small band of helpers arrived early to organise

the initial set up of tables and components and by

9a.m. members and volunteers began to arrive.

There was a great feeling of excitement throughout

as men, women and children worked together to

get the job done; and what a fantastic job........

4000 Birthing Kits completed by 119 members and

volunteers in less than 3 hours!

There was even time to socialise and to enjoy

morning tea and lunch supplied by attendees.

These simple life saving kits are now on their way

to South Sudan and all that is left to do is to offer a

sincere thank you to everyone who participated in

the preparation and assembly of the kits.

This was such a rewarding day but after everyone

else had gone home, one person was left with the

responsibility of taking several HUGE parcels to

the local Post Offi ce followed by the completion of

reams of forms........many thanks to Mary and Bill

Seelis for all the extra work they contributed to the

success of this project.

Guest SpeakerThank you to guest speaker at our September dinner meeting, Belinda Kassoua who headed RAMSI (Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands) as advisor to the Training Director to set up a women’s network to break down cultural barriers attempting to advance equal opportunities for women in the workplace where most key positions were traditionally male roles. In September the fi rst ever South Pacifi c Regional Women’s Conference was held and Zonta, Berry was able to make a contribution to the women attending of a cloth shopping bag bearing the Zonta Logo and a leafl et containing information about the work of our organisation.

Reluctant good byeAfter 10 years of excellent care and great food, reluctantly, due to growing

numbers, Zonta Berry has had to seek a new venue for the monthly dinner

meetings.

President Gillian Dickinson and members, Barbara Smith and Pat Collins

presented a plaque to Matt and Steve of the Berry Hotel to thank them

and their staff for their generous and supportive service over the years.

A heartfelt thank you from all Zonta members, past and present.

Winding downOur fi nal gathering for 2011 will be held this month for members and guests ....a low key Christmas Party; however, we look forward to welcoming new guests to attend our dinner meetings commencing February 2012. Our new venue will be announced in our December article.
