We serve God, teach God’s Word and demonstrate Christ’s love.

Address Service Requested
As a pastor, it is a privilege and joy to share God’s words of Truth with others. These words and actions of our Lord changes the lives of millions of people daily. They are far dif-ferent than any other words spoken. They are Truth. They are Love. They are LIFE! While it is a honor, I must admit many times my sharing of His words become just the opposite. While I still speak the Truth and Love, the LIFE seems to have been sucked out of it. Why? Is God’s Life-given word now no longer working? No, may it never be! Then it must be me. Did I study the scriptures thoroughly? Did I flub on the delivery? Did I…? It is possible on those occasions that I did not give a complete understanding of the scriptures. It is possible that I dishonored my college speech professor by erroring in my de-livery skills. More than likely, I failed in another area. This one area of failure is not segmented to pastor’s alone. It is done daily by every child of God. We err in being correct. Huh? We, pastors and laymen alike, have a tendency to grasp hold of God’s Truth. This is to be applauded. Yet we go to the extreme. As we grasp hold, we try to control. We want to make sense of the Truth so we may know how to use it properly. This sounds good, but we take the personhood of God out of the equation. We reduce God being Truth to statements of Truth in order to live by. We loose the relationship and intimacy with God in order to be right. In being right, the message becomes dry and we become dead. We need to once again come to God and seek Him. In doing so, He will reveal His Truth for us. It will not be stale and lifeless. It will be full of vibrancy and energy. Dogma and theology are important, but a relationship with Christ is even more. If we take the time to know Him, He will reveal so much more. That is why I am concentrating on making 2019 our year to see God and Jesus in a new light. I want us to once again marvel at the “Wonders” of His works. I want us to be awed by the “Beauty” of His presence and crea-tion. I want us to be stunned by His “Mysteries” of grace. I want us to experience God and forever be changed. To accomplish this, one sermon each month will be dedicated to us experiencing God’s “WoBeMy”(Wonder, Beauty, and Mystery). Join me in making God and the Bible more than a cognitive study. Let us draw near to Him with new eyes and be ready to marvel, awe, and be stunned. He is that good. - Pastor John Kress

2019 VBS STAFFING CALENDAR
The Deacons need your help. We are in the process of planning Vacation Bible School for this Summer. Because we want our program to be the best it can be, we are asking you now to con-sider helping us with the VBS program. We are looking at 2 possible weeks. On the days in question, we will be hosting VBS in the morning hours. However, we ask that you sign on those days, not weeks, you believe you could assist. We will be gathering this info through Feb. 17th and deciding on the 18th. We will try to see about doing a full-week of VBS, but if we discover that it would be more beneficial to do a 2, 3, or 4 day-VBS instead, we will. Please consider and sign below. Upon completion, either turn in the form at the church office or the offering plate. Thanks.
Please continue to pray for our men and women in the military service:

CROSSMEN YOUTH
The Crossmen is our church Youth Group. It is open to kids in 4th grade thru High School. We meet every Tuesday at 5:30 PM. We also strive to do a fun activity or social project once a month. If any questions, parents can call youth director Karen or Pastor John Kress at (309)945-2648.
Tri-Church Collaboration
We have been in contact with the churches of Erie Baptist and First Baptist of Morrison. We have attempted twice to have a conversation with these two churches. Each time we were halted by bad weather. To try to ensure a successful third time, we will be setting a date to convene in March. When that date approaches, I will invite you to join us as Cordova’s representative for this conversation on how the three churches can help each other.
BREAKFAST AT THE CAFÉ
On the last Tuesday of each month we gather at 9 AM at Mississippi Café in Albany. There we social-ize over a hot meal. We plan to convene on February 26th. Join us!
EXERCISE CLASS
Our exercise class, led by Sue King, meets at 8:30 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Come join!
Port Byron Pantry Collection Needs
For the months of January and February we are collecting cereals, breakfast bars, and canned meats. If you can assist with any of these items (or any other you may think of), please bring them by the church and place in one of our drop boxes. The drop off boxes can be located by each of the three church doorways.
New Address Linda O’Hanlon
PO Box 2381 Davenport, IA 52809
Check the Coat Rack We have several coats that have been hanging on our coat rack for some time. Please see if any belong to you. Any coats that are still here after the end of February will be donated.
Valentine’s Spaghetti Dinner
The American Legion and First Baptist will be having a Valentine Spa-ghetti Dinner. Please join us in the Church’s Prescott Hall on Saturday February 16 from 4:00-7:00 PM.
MITTEN TREE
Winter is most definitely here. While we can stay warm from the elements, some of the kids in our community may not be as fortunate. Some kids come to school with either no
gloves or hats for recess. Others come with these items, but are soon lost. We desire to keep our kids warm. We encourage you to contribute to our mitten tree with mittens, scarves, gloves, and hats. These items will be distributed between the Erie and Riverdale Elementary Schools. Please give today.

2019 Pocket Planners & 175th Totes
Members of First Baptist received 2019 Pocket Planners as gifts from the Diaconate for Christmas. If you have not received one, please pick one up one today at the back of the sanctuary.
We also still have 175th Anniversary Tote Bags for those who desire one or more.
Communion Sunday As we gather on the first Sunday of the month to share Communion to-gether, we are now asking you to join us in Prescott Hall instead of
the sanctuary. We do not want the stairs or steep ramp to hinder any
who would desire to partake. There-fore, the first Sunday of the month’s Service of Communion will now be
downstairs.
