From the Adjutant Article VI, Section 4. According to our

constitutional by-laws, the Executive Board

has the overall responsibility for the opera-

tion and management of the Post 66 lounge

and all other facilities on the property.

This brings us to the struggle we have had

to get a quorum for our monthly membership

meetings. With over 1300 members we need

only 13 members to conduct a meeting. (This

number cannot include E-Board members.)

In order for the E Board to conduct cer-

tain business, we need approval from the

membership. The meeting usually lasts no

more than 30-45 minutes and is once a month.

I would like to encourage members to please

attend some meetings so your voice may be

heard.

SAL News…. Finally, some nice weather! It was a tough winter. It’s

great to have less wind, see more sun and fewer clouds and

be able to get the shorts out again.

Across the country on Saturday, May 18, the 350,000

members of the Sons of the American Legion will hold an

APPRECIATION DAY for Post 66 veterans to thank

them for what they have and continue to do for our coun-

try.

That same day, the 242 members of SAL Squadron 66

will hold a short program and a free breakfast for our Post

66 veterans and their guest. It will begin at 9 am and will

include a complimentary beverage and door prizes. One of

the menu items is sure to bring back memories.

Tickets (limit 2) will be available after April 1 from the

office or bartenders. Bring your 2013 membership card.

TICKETS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE ON MAY 18!! Any questions, call Al Fisch, 399-2374, Larry Hisman,

625-8609, or Bill Heaslip, 399-1759.

SAL members who want to help should contact any of

the above.

Membership

Through February we had 243 members! This already

exceeds our target for 2013. Thanks to all of you who

have renewed your membership and for bringing in friends

and family that qualify. We’ve seen a 28% increase in

membership over the past 3 years!

“The Wall”

Hopefully, by now we’re making progress on our sec-

tion of the new wall decorations in the hall. Stop by and

take a look—it’s on the right side of the hall as you face

the stage. If you have anything you would like to share for

display (articles or displays about the SAL or pictures of

SAL members “in action” around the Post), please contact

me at 625-8609. We’d especially like to have pictures of

your military parents or grandparents.

Volunteers

We have a special need for 3-4 volunteers to cook ba-

con and sausage for use in our Breakfast in a Bag events.

It would be only once a month and takes 3-4 hours. Please

contact me or Jennifer Lawson if you can help.

I hope you have a good spring/summer and I look for-

ward to seeing you at the Post!

For God and Country,

Larry Hisman

Absolutely NO outside food or

beverages allowed in the lounge!

Auxiliary News

Greetings from the Auxiliary!

This year is flying by. We will elect a new Aux-

iliary President this spring. Let’s get behind this

member and give her all your support. Our mem-

bership is at 91%. We have a great Auxiliary!

I want to thank all of our volunteers who help

with special events, Thursday dinners, Friday

lunches, and tacos on Saturday nights.

We had another great Mardi Gras party. Re-

member it snowed? Thanks Claire Marcey for all

your work.

If you have an idea for a special event, let me

know about it. I’m always open to new ideas.

We had a very successful Valentine’s dinner. I

couldn't do it without Beth Nicolli. Thanks to all

who worked the prime rib dinner.

I won’t want to forget our workers who put on

the District II meeting/dinner. We had many com-

pliments.

A special thank you to Gail Stack and her volun-

teers for making our Poppy Campaign such a suc-

cess.

My year is almost up. I want to thank my E-

Board—a great bunch of gals that make things hap-

pen. I have enjoyed being your President these past

3 years. Thanks to Diane, you keep me straight;

Beth & Geri for their refreshments every meeting;

MJ Gooch, our District II President; Jennifer Law-

son, our Post Manager; our Commander Bill Lam-

pright; the Legion E-Board and SAL. And no, I

haven’t forgotten... The Most Important Person...my

husband, Harry Cook. We all work together as a

Post family. That makes us stronger.

Come out and support your Post!

FOR GOD & COUNTRY,

Jo Ann Cook, President

BE PROUD TO SHOW YOUR CARD!

It is very important that everyone understands

the definition of MEMBER versus GUEST under

the American Legion By-laws. Spouses and sig-

nificant others are GUESTS unless they choose to

join the Auxiliary or SAL. This means as a mem-

ber you must sign in your spouse, significant

other or any other guest every time you enter the

Post lounge. They also must leave when you do.

We have all worked very hard to make our

Post fun and successful, and we all want to keep it

that way. Under the Arizona liquor law, you are

required to have your card in your possession

(not in your car or at home) at all times while in

the Post, since we are a private club.

Please do not ever be offended when asked to

sign your guests in or show your card. You are

valued members and should be proud to show

your card.

They could have won!!!! If these members had been at recent Legion

membership meetings, they would have won

$200 in the member drawing.

You have to attend to win.

PUFL Membership The cost of a Paid-Up-For-Life membership, which

is based upon the member’s age at the time of applica-

tion and the current annual dues of the post can be

found on the rate schedule at www.legion.org/join/pufl.

Names on the sick call list will only be listed

if the family contacts the office. Names on

taps list will be taken from the obituaries in

the paper or notification by members.

POPPY FACTS

In 1919, amidst complete devastation, the poppies bloomed

in abundance on the battlefields of France where so many of

our men had fallen in battle, and that a replica of this poppy

has become the Memorial Flower of the American Legion

Auxiliary.

The American legion was the first national organization to

adopt the poppy as its Memorial Flower, having taken this

action at the National Convention in Cleveland, Sept. 1920.

The memorial poppies are made of red crepe paper, by hand,

by disabled veterans in hospitals and poppy workrooms in

40 states, and the workers receive pay for each poppy made,

the material being furnished free by the Department in the

state in which the hospital is located.

Proceeds from the distribution of over 25,000,000 poppies

annually amount to more than $2,000,000, every penny of

which is devoted to Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation

work by the Legion and Auxiliary.
