SEW torque motors are AC motors designed to operate with rated torque at a standstill (startingtorque). They are equivalent to springs with an unlimited spring travel.Geared torque motors move flaps, gates or points (switches). They move press dies into the diechange position. In all these cases, they serve as a drive in which a stop position must be reachedand held following a short movement. Whilst under voltage, they can also have their speedmatched temporarily by another drive and then continue running under their own force.Connection voltages and indices of protection for SEW torque motors correspond to those of SEWAC motors.The electrical design and construction makes it possible to operate the torque motor continuouslywith the permitted run-up torque in rating I without worrying about the starting frequency.The attainable run-up torque is tripled when the torque motors are operated with rating II. Thisoperation is either only permitted for short intervals (operating mode S3/15 % c.d.f.) or continu-ously with forced cooling of the torque motor.The dimensions of the MT/MV torque motor are identical to those of DT/DV AC motors of the samesize (see also “Geared Motors” catalog).Geared torque motors are assembled using a modular system just like geared motors. Theirthermal conditions mean torque motors develop less torque than AC motors of the same design.There is, however, a greater range of possible combinations with gear units.The illustration below shows the principle of the geared torque/speed characteristic for SEWgeared torque motors.

With helical and helical-bevel gear units, the difference in the operatingefficiency is negligible. With helical-worm and Spiroplan® gear units, however, very unfavorable conditions may arisedepending on the gear unit ratio. A precise recalculation is always necessary in this case.The summaries of combinations listed are intended as a guide for the project planner. They refer toan input speed of 0. In all cases, however, you are advised to have SEW confirm the selection youmake.
