Studying at St Clare’sINTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

St Clare’s has been teaching the International Baccalaureate Diploma since 1977, longer than any other school or college in England. In fact, only 13 other IB schools in the world have a

longer history.

The College is proud of its academic reputation and IB results are significantly above the world average, year after year. Students regularly achieve 40+ points, and our average score (36 points) is the equivalent of four grade As at A level! As a result, our students have gained places at top universities in the UK, such as Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, Imperial and Edinburgh, and in the USA, such as Harvard and New York University. We also offer a one-year Preparatory IB course as well as Workshops for IB teachers throughout the year.

In addition to providing a first-class academic education, St Clare’s encourages its students to be thoughtful, enquiring, independent learners with a zest for life.

UNIVERSITY PATHWAYS

University Pathways courses are a unique combination of academic study and language development. Subject specialists and English Language teachers work together at

the International College to bring out the very best from our students.

The programmes include:

• Gateway to University – a pre-Foundation course that bridges the gap between school and university;

• University Foundation Course for entry to university in the UK or USA or wherever English is the medium of instruction;

• English plus Academic Subjects for advanced-level students who want a flying start to university;

• Undergraduate Programme for university students completing a Study Abroad semester in Oxford.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

English Language courses at our International College are widely recognised as the essential stepping stone to a successful career. Learners (aged 17+), from across the world, can

choose from three course options:

• English for Life

• English for Examinations – IELTS and Cambridge

• Combination Course or Personal Language Training (1:1)

Courses vary in length, with fresh start dates each month throughout the year.

Crucially, English Language learners share facilities, activities and experiences with students on the University Pathways and Undergraduate Programmes. Progress lies at the heart of our educational philosophy and transition from one course to another is actively encouraged.

SUMMER COURSES

St Clare’s offers a comprehensive nine-week programme during the summer with courses designed to suit all ages:

• English & Activity courses for 10 to 15-year-olds at the Junior campus.

• Interactive English, Intensive English, Science in Oxford, Business in Oxford and IB Preparation for 15 to 17-year-olds at the Teenager campus;

• Examination, English for Life, Combination and One-to-One courses at the International College for students aged 17+.

A range of tailor-made courses for closed groups is also available during the summer – ask for details.

St Clare’s was founded in 1953 by two remarkable women: Anne Dreydel and Pamela Morris. Their

motivation for establishing an international college can be summarised in the following sentence. ‘We felt we should not tell people how to think, we should bring them together so that they could make contact with

people who had a wide range of differing views.’

Our most recent inspection report confirms that ‘The international culture of the College is a real strength

and all students, irrespective of their own background, fully embrace the uniqueness of this experience.’

It is doubtful whether the founders could have anticipated how successful the College would become. The first lessons were held in a single room in a house

in Lathbury Road. Today, the College owns 24 buildings and leases three more, all in the beautiful conservation

area of North Oxford.

St Clare’s is an academically successful college which provides students from over 50 nationalities with a

unique educational experience. It continues to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma as well as English Language, University Foundation and Undergraduate-level courses throughout the year. It also runs a popular summer programme for students of all ages. Students

at St Clare’s are articulate, confident and keen to make the most of the opportunities which are offered to

them. Each one contributes to and helps keep alive the college mission of ‘advancing international education

and understanding’.
