Sweep the job to remove debris

Don’t assume because you passed DOT certification that everything is still in spec

Make sure you give yourself enough room Be up to speed before the run starts,

maintain a constant speed throughout testing and don’t deaccelerate until after the data collection has been stopped

Replicate runs are ESSENTIAL, so profile again! Like with any testing, care, accuracy and

precision is critical

Mark Out

Marking out the localized roughness/bumps with the profiler is a great way to identify issues with your operation or issues out of your control

Spray paint or stake start and end points of the roughness on the shoulder of the roadway for future reference

Ride the pavement once its marked and see if you can feel the identified roughness

Rapidly changing speed during a run will affect the accelerometers and contaminate the data

Examples – Wind

Similar to the effect caused by changing speeds, the accelerometer may record acceleration along the y-axis thus increasing roughness in your profile runs

How do you avoid this “noise”? Don’t profile when it’s windy out, because you can’t control it

Examples – Hills & Curves

Like wind you cannot avoid it Need to maintain a consistent speed that

minimizes the effects to the profiler when cornering or ascending or descending hills

Make replicate runs at different speeds and watch for differences in the profiler’s output that may indicate effects of curves or hills

Not enough room to get the profiler up to speed

Same will be true for stopping too soon at the end of the run

Textured pavements like SMA, OGFC/PFC or other large stone mixes can affect IRI although the ride is not affected

PSD – Power Spectral Density Module Simply stated; it tells you if there’s something

effecting your profiles

Summary

Smooth pavements aren’t achieved by accident

You need to perform quality testing early and often

Only you can control the quality of data that is collected

Use the tools available to review your data
