THE CITY

City of Szczecin

"Echte Stettiner" (True Szczeciner) - this was the

way to describe someone stubborn, resolute,

courageous, raw - in XIX-th century. Genius loci

of Szczecin is felt here easily: in the communist

era Szczecin was the city, where strikes broke

out, where people put up a continuous resistance

to the communist regime. Today, Szczecin is

also full people with a rm, but at the same time

welcoming character.

Szczecin was the capital of the Duchy of

Pomerania, but also had been ruled by Denmark,

Prussia, France, Sweden, Germany. Today it's

inside the Polish borders. This extraordinary past

can be seen today on every step: in architecture,

urban planning, squares, parks; while walking

you pass the still operating water pumps,

shelters, old signs.

During the Second World War, Szczecin was

destroyed in 80%, so - in contrast to most of the

cities - we don't have the Old Town. Currently, it

is being re-built.

Even visiting pubs and discos brings you a trip in

time: in one of the pubs you can move to the

seventeenth century, to the time of the Swedish

Szczecin (it is opened in the former city

fortications); in another - to the Communist

times (when there was a militia station). One of

nightclubs is located in the former headquarters

of the Royal Iron Railway.

The past is everywhere here and it is always

clearly visible - while walking in Poland's largest

cemetery, which is both a park and botanical

garden; the largest shelter in today's Poland,

during the session in the oldest cinema in the

world... Szczecin is also the history of

technology: the wreck of the tanker made of

concrete, Poland's only one railway drawbridge

or the oldest oating dock in Europe.

At the same time Szczecin is not afraid of

momentum and bold architecture. Two buildings

that have won the highest architectural awards

make this city even more woth visiting: Szczecin

Philharmonic, that gained the Mies van der Rohe

award and the Centre for Dialogue Upheavals

with the World Building of the Year award that

was won during the festival of architecture in

Berlin in November 2016.

How much time is needed to see Szczecin?

Someone may say that the one-day intensive tour

will do the trick. But this is not true, because

Szczecin is not only about the past. Szczecin is

also the vastness of space, water and greenery,

which is best viewed from boat or kayak.

Szczecin is a Floating Garden - many rare

species of aquatic plants and animals have here

their home.

Szczecin has many faces. How much time is

needed to see and get to know them all?

The City Tourist Route

The City Tourist Route is

a 7-km-long loop which

connects 42 sites – the

most interesting

monuments and places

worthseeing. The idea

behind the route was to commemorate the 750th

anniversary of granting town privileges to

Szczecin. The route is marked by an easily found

red dotted line painted on the pavement, and

thus the common name of the trail is the “Red

Route”.

Numbers in circles act as supplementary signs

corresponding to each site on the route. Near to

each number an information board with a

detailed description of the object is either

suspended on the wall of the building or standing

alone. A pocket guidebook published in various

languages, including a map of the route, can be

purchased at the tourist information centres, the

local seat of Polish Tourist and Sightseeing

Society and in bookstores. The route begins and

ends in front of the Szczecin Central Railway

Station.

Golden Trail

There is no such a

walking trail in any other

Polish city. It leads from

the city center from The

Pomeranian Dukes'

Castle through John Paul

II Alley, Kasprowicza Park to the forest. Although

it is a long way to go it is worth traveling as a

whole by for example combining the walk with

the bike tour.

After visiting the antique part of the city, you can

ride a bike through Jasne Błonia Alleys,

Kasprowicza Park with its charming Rusałka

Lake and Summer Theater to the Rose Garden.

Next, following the forest pathways you can

reach some city recreational facilities. You can

take a rest in the city lido or on a landscaped

forest elds. On Głębokie Lake you can change

your bike for a kayak or water bicycle. Rope Park

waits for amateurs of active relaxation.

Your trip can be continued through the forest for

example following the trail of Seven Mills

-Gubałówka.

TOP 10!

City of Szczecin

Szczecin is a city with lots of stunning places.

Some are famous for their history or

architecture; some of them are hard to nd and

you really need a good guide to show you them.

And some are to nd here!

Chrobry Embankment (Haken's Terrace)

The Chrobry

Embankment, formerly

Haken’s Terrace, one of

the most beautiful places

in Europe. From here you

can watch the vast

panorama of the Odra River and the harbour.

The viewing terraces are 500 m long and are

located 19 m above the Odra river bank.

The earliest written history of the area dates

back to the sixteenth century. In 1873, a

demolition of the eighteenth-century

fortications of Szczecin began. Thanks to the

great commitment of Hermann Haken, High

Mayor of Szczecin, in the years 1902-1905 a

viewing terrace was formed on the site of Fort

Leopold. Wide staircases run on both sides from

the terrace to the banks of the river, where two

pavilions were erected as the entrance to the

restaurant, created contemporarily in the

remains of the fortications. At the bottom, there

is a fountain decorated with gures of John of

Kolno and Wyszak and two tall columns stylized

as lighthouses.

In the years 1906 to 1912 in the northern part of

the terrace an architectural complex was built

for the then regency of Szczecin, where now the

authorities of the West-Pomeranian province

have their headquarters. In addition, in the

southern part of the Embankment a building

complex of the Maritime Academy is located

(from the years 1902-1905 and 1918-1921) and,

housed in the same building, Contemporary

Theatre and the Maritime Branch of the National

Museum. Moreover, a large park is situated

near the Chrobry Embankment.

Szczecin Philharmonic

Have you ever seen an

iceberg in the city

center? If not, you must

see the new premises of

Szczecin Philharmonic

which majestically

emerges from urban buildings and pervasive

greenery.

Its metal and glass facade supplemented with

light illuminations catch the eye of each person

who comes nearby. The building was designed by

catalonian architects from Barozzi Veiga from

Barcelona and immediately has become the icon

of our city. Modern design combined with

inspiration taken from historic building of

Konzerthaus creates a coherent whole of past,

present and future of Szczecin. It has received

numerous awards, including the Mies van der

Rohe Award in 2015, the Award of the President

of the Republic of Poland for the Best

Architectural Structure in Poland in the years

2013-2014 in the “LIFE IN ARCHITECTURE”

contest, and the award of the “bryla. pl” website

dealing with architecture.

During the summer there are regular guided

tours. There is also a cafe on the ground oor.

Łasztownia isle & boulevards

It is on this mystery

Island that the new heart

of Szczecin is being born.

Today’s Łasztownia is a

completely dierent place

to the closed port island

from a while back. Once an isolated, mysterious

space, today it is one of the favourite places for

people going for walks, running, biking or fans of

good coee and international cuisine.

Gradually renovated buildings of the old

butcher’s complex, historic port cranes, new

boulevards, cafés, restaurants, a yacht port and

big events bring huge crowds to Łasztownia. It is

here where you can nd Euroregion Culture

Center “Stara Rzeźnia”, the growing Marine

Science Centre, and every day the

Cranosauruses perform their illuminated dance.

The number of attractions creating the

atmosphere of this unique place is still growing.

In the future we will see more investments and

projects which will eventually be the

implementation of the winning concept of the

international competition for the island

development vision.

Walking on the Łasztownia wharfs, if you’re

lucky enough, you will feel the aroma of

chocolate, coming from the Gryf chocolate

factory. After dark you’ll surely see the

illumination of three historic cranes, nicknamed

“Cranosauruses”. Don’t forget to take a picture

with a marine sign “SZCZECIN”, located on the

square at the end of Old Town Quay. This is also

the place where you can best see the Old Town

panorama, with the monumental buildings of

Wały Chrobrego and the Ducal Castle.

From Łasztownia, we go directly onto the

neighbouring Grodzka Island, which attracts

both children and adults with a beach, beach bar

and events for families, kings of the dance oor

and fans of open-air cinemas.

Jasne Błonia and Park Kasprowicza

Jasne Błonia Square is a

wide green house located

by the Szczecin Municipal

Oice. It's a great place

to rest: you can walk, ride

a bike or sit comfortably

on a bench or on the lawn. The park was built in

the years 1925-27, it was designed with rows of

maple plane trees on the sides of a wide lawn

with ground-based ower arrangements in the

middle. It is the largest concentration of this

species of trees in Poland, of which over 200 are

growing here. Computational continuity is

ensured by an alley stretching towards

Kasprowicz Park and further to the Arkonian

Forest.

Try to come to the park in early spring when the

lawns are carpeted with bright crocus owers.

Dialogue Center "Upheavals"

It's one of branches of the

National Museum in

Szczecin, where we

present the newest

history of Szczecin and

West Pomerania region,

with particular attention given to social protests

and breaking events in the years 1970–1971,

1980–1981, 1988–1989, that lead Poland to

regain independence in 1989. The building that

houses our museum is partially hidden under the

Solidarity Square. The exhibition is interactive,

apart from subject-related pieces, in its

underground rooms you may see lms, pictures

and recordings of the events’ witnesses and

participants. Location of the museum has not

been chosen by an accident - it was here when

on 17 December 1970 rst shots were red at

the protesters. In July 2016, the Dialogue Centre

Upheavals was ranked the Best Public Space in

Europe. Four months later, on November 18, the

same building was named World Building of the

St. James Arch Cathedral and the tower

St. James’ church in

Szczecin was founded in

1187 be a wealthy

townsman Jakob Beringer

from Bamberg and it was

constructed outside the

city fortications, on a hill, just like the

Benedictine monastery church of St. Archangel

Michael in Bamberg.

The building was rebuilt several times. In the

13th century, the building had the form of a

three-nave Gothic basilica, without buttresses,

but later the naves were raised. In 1534, the

temple passed into the hands of Protestants.

Inside the cathedral there is a chancel with an

altar table and decorative brass reliefs. There is

also a triptych with reliefs from the 14th century

and an elaborate crucix from the turn of the

15th and 16th centuries. The cathedral has 19

chapels, including the Chapel of Our Lady of

Częstochowa with a neo-Gothic interior and the

image of Our Lady of Częstochowa; the Baptism

Chapel with a triptych from the 16th century;

and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament with a

beautiful altar from the end of the 14th century.

The organs in the cathedral are truly impressive.

The rst mention of the instrument comes from

1679; unfortunately, they did not survive the

turbulent history of the place. In 2008, new,

large organs were built. An interesting fact about

the instrument is the fact that the main part of

the organ, weighing about 30 tons, is suspended

above the nave without any support. The

counterweight is the construction located at the

end of the choir. The instrument is 10 m high,

has 66 voices and consists of 4743 pipes, from 11

mm to 10 m high.

In 2008 the cathedral’s tower was rebuilt and its

original appearance was restored. There is a

viewing platform on the tower, available for

tourists all year round. After the renovations, the

tower is 110.18 m tall and is the second tallest

building in Szczecin.

The building is currently the second tallest

temple in Poland, right after the basilica in

Licheń.

The temple is part of the European Route of

Brick Gothic.

Szczecin Philharmonic

Have you ever seen an

iceberg in the city

center? If not, you must

see the new premises of

Szczecin Philharmonic

which majestically

emerges from urban buildings and pervasive

greenery. Its metal and glass facade

supplemented with light illuminations catch the

eye of each person who comes nearby. The

building was designed by catalonian architects

from Barozzi Veiga from Barcelona and

immediately has become the icon of our city.

Modern design combined with inspiration taken

from historic building of Konzerthaus creates a

coherent whole of past, present and future of

Szczecin. It has received numerous awards,

including the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2015,

the Award of the President of the Republic of

The City Tourist RouteThe City Tourist Route is

a 7-km-long loop which

Łasztownia isle & boulevards

Łasztownia (ger.

Lastadie) is located in the

very heart of Szczecin,

vis-a-vis the Chrobry

Embankment. It is a river

island whose history

stratches back to the Middle Ages. After the

Allied air raids of 1942 - 1944, most of the

buildings on Łasztownia were destroyed.

Currently, Łasztownia is one of the most

interesting (and most mysterious) places in

Szczecin. One particularly interesting spot is the

part of the Old Town Wharf situated right next to

the historic cranes, aectionately dubbed the

"cronosaurs". Following the renovation works,

they have regained their former splendour.

Symbols of the port of Szczecin, these historical

cranes from 1929 are most beautiful during the

night.

St. James Arch Cathedral and the tower

After the 1147 crusade

against the Polabian

Slavs, Szczecin became a

place of German

colonisation. St Jacob’s

Church, intended for

German colonists, was consecrated in 1187. It

was founded by Beringer, a Bramberg pilgrim,

and given to the custody of the Benedictine

brothers from the St Michael Monastery in

Bramberg.

The construction of the brick church continued

for dozens of years, starting in the middle of the

13th Century from a three-aisle basilica with two

spires and a basilica-like presbytery, surrounded

with a by-pass and a circle of chapels. The altars

were founded by the Szczecin guilds and

companies.

The presbytery reconstruction started in 1370.

The basilica frame was changed into the hall

frame with a circle of chapels between the

interior buttresses.

At the outset of the 15th Century Henry

Brunsberg built additional chapels on the

southern aisle, decorating them with impressive

ornaments made of tiled moulders.

In 1456 the southern spire collapsed during a

hurricane, destroying the basilica corpus. During

reconstruction, additional chapels were erected

in the northern section, together with only one

spire in the western part, as a result of which the

corpus was changed from the basilica frame into

a hall church frame. The reconstruction work

was completed in 1503.

In the last 25 years of the 17th Century, the

interior section was reconstructed in the

Baroque style. The St Jacob bell, constructed by

Wawrzyniec Köckeritz, the Szczecin bell-founder,

was placed in the church tower. The altar was

created by sculptor Erhard Löer, and the

painting, entitled “Taken down the cross”, was

made by Lengereich. The organ front was

sculptured by the Amsterdam master Van der

Linden. While assembling the organs with a

large scale of sounds, advice was provided by

master Buxtehude from Lübeck. The capacity of

this instrument was wonderfully utilised by

organist and composer Karl Loewe, residing in

Szczecin in 1820-1866.

The church was badly damaged during the 16

August 1944 shelling. Its reconstruction did not

start until 1972 and has continued until today.

The oicial consecration of the cathedral was

performed on 31 May 1982 by Kazimierz

Majdański, the Szczecin-Kamieniec Bishop. The

status of Cathedral Basilica was given by Pope

John Paul II on 23 May 1983, and the status of

Metropolitan Basilica on 25 March 1992.

Considering the ongoing additions to the rich

furnishings of the church, we suggest that you

buy a current version of the guidebook while

visiting this astonishing place.

The tower is an element of the St. James

Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral. An observation

deck is available for tourist all year long. The

entrance to the terrace is only via a lift.

The National Museum in Szczecin — TheSzczecin History Museum -Old Town Hall

The rst mention of the

wooden market hall,

which was also the venue

for the deliberations of

the court and the

meetings of the city

councillors called “theatrum”, dates back to

1245. The current Gothic town hall hails from

mid-15th Century, with Henryk Brunsberg

considered to be its builder. The richly-decorated

façade featuring glazed stones adds a painterly

style to the structure. The building has arcades

on its south wall, which used to play host to

court proceedings on summer days. The City

Council convened here twice a week.

From the 14th Century the resolutions of the

City Council were announced twice a year, i.e. on

1 May and 29 September. As some of them were

quite peculiar, it is no wonder that such

announcements sometimes left the city in tumult.

Examples included the introduction of the

anti-Hussite tax in 1428 and the raising of the

prices of spirits in 1616. Less severe regulations

were e.g. the resolution from 1418 against

calumniators and rumourmongers slandering

“lords, dukes, knights, squires, ladies, girls,

priests, and vassals...”, or one law from 1558

which limited the luxury and excess during

wedding celebrations, baptisms, and funerals.

From 5 to 13 December 1570 the town hall

hosted a Peace Congress ending the Northern

Seven Years' War between Sweden and

Denmark.

After the damage suered during the

Brandenburg sieges, it was rebuilt in the

Baroque style and served its purpose until the

City Council was moved to the New Town Hall in

1879.

Reconstructed again after the War in 1975 as the

National Museum, it houses exhibitions

dedicated to Szczecin’s past.

The National Museum in Szczecin — TheMuseum of Regional Traditions

The Museum of Regional

Traditions is located in

Baroque Landed Gentry

House (Pommersche

Landsmannschaft), built

in years 1726–1727

according to the order of Prussian king Frederick

William I. The building was designed by Gerhard

Cornelius de Walrave (1692–1773), the author

of, among others, famous Kłodzko fortess and

fortications of Szczecin.

The palace served as the session hall of

Pomeranian provincial authorities and a royal

residence during king's stays in Szczecin. Over

the entrance, there is the coat of arms of

Pomerania and at the top of the facade – coat of

arms of the king of Prussia against a background

of panoply (crossed military equipment) and

allegoric images of royal virtues: Justice and

Sagacity.

In the period between the world wars the palace

was re-arranged into the seat of the Pomeranian

State Museum (Pommersches Landesmuseum),

and after World War II the building was taken

over by the Museum of Western Pomerania,

presently the National Museum in Szczecin. It

houses exhibitions of, above all, relics of

Pomeranian art from middle ages to Baroque,

including Romanesque capitals from Kołbacz,

early-Gothic Crucix from Kamień Pomorski, a

portrait of duke Philip I by Lucas Cranach the

astonishing view of the Szczecin's waterfront. An

unusuall experience that you might take a part

in on the boulevards is a sort of aroma therapy,

with a lovely smell of chocolate straight from the

chocolate factory located nearby.

Obviously, it's also a good place to berth your

boat there or go to one of plenty caees and

restaurants, that are always opened until

nightfall. When it is hot, then you also should

know, that there is an island between two banks

of Oder, where a beach is located.

not be reached on foot, by car or bicycle, can be

Szczecin's Venice

The complex of industrial

buildings by the Odra

street (near

"Zachodniopomorskie

Stowarzyszenie Rozwoju

our city. Historic buildings such as old yeast

factory or alcohol manufacture were once the

pride of industrial district reaching Tama

Pomorzańska street. You can have the

impression that the buildings shoot straight from

the water and with the little help of imagination

you can see them for example as restored hotels.

The city council wants to rebuild this place as

Szczecin has the potencial to become so called

Venice of the North.

Miedzyodrze by kayak

Miedzyodrze is a region

of ood waters and

wetlands that spreads

south of Szczecin

bounded by the two arms

of the Oder River – the

Eastern and Western Oder. This area is situated

within the Lower Oder Valley Landscape Park, so

it is prohibited to sail there by boats with

engines. Silence, calm and clear water makes

Miedzyodrze a paradise for water birds, beavers,

otters and rare plant species. For those eager

for adventures and communing with wild and

unspoiled nature the best way to see this region

is by kayak, which makes it possible to discover

its wild and intimate corners. While kayaking

through a picturesque network of winding

canals, you pass elds of forget-me-nots,

kingcups, irises, ferns and hundreds of

beautifully blossoming plants. From below

duckweed, the limbs of dead trees stick out.

Among dense bulrush you can look out for about

200 species of birds that have their hatcheries

here, including herons, cormorants, sea eagles,

buzzards and kingshers.

The winding ood waters of Międzyodrze are the

result of human activity. The remains of

regulation works from the beginning of the 19th

Century such as forgotten sluices, pumping

stations, embankments, etc. make a huge

impression.

Tours around Miedzyodrze are organised each

week from the rst Sunday in June till the middle

of September, by „Miedzyodrze” Stanica Wodna

(near Dziewoklicz beach). It is also possible to

rent kayaks there for individual tours. Stanica is

Łasztownia isle

Łasztownia (ger.

Lastadie) is located in the

very heart of Szczecin,

vis-a-vis the Chrobry

Embankment. It is a river

island whose history

stretches

back to the Middle Ages. After the Allied air

raids of 1942–

1944, most of the buildings on Łasztownia were

destroyed.

Currently, Łasztownia is one of the most

interesting (and most

mysterious) places in Szczecin.

One particularly interesting spot is the part of

the Old Town

Wharf situated right next to the historic cranes,

aectionately

dubbed the ”cranosaurs”. Following recent

renovation works,

they have regained their former splendour.

Symbols of the

port of Szczecin, these historical cranes from

1929 are at

their most beautiful during the cyclic events

organised on

the Oder river.

Urban Summer Zone

The Urban Summer Zone

(or ”central beach” as the

residents call it) was

established near the

marina, on Grodzka Isle.

It is an area right on the

bank of the Oder designated for rest and

recreation on warm summer days. It has

umbrellas, sunbeds, hammocks, pillows, beach

balls and sand toy sets for children. There are

also real palm trees planted in the sand and

atmospheric garden lanterns. The

zone is open in the summer season. There is no

admission fee.

Kana Theatre

Kana is an independent

theatre and center

founded and run since

1979 by Zygmunt

Duczyński, and since

2006 by the team he

established.

The Kana Theatre operates in the following

areas: popularization and promotion of culture in

such aspects as: theatre, performing arts, music,

and interdisciplinary forms (with a special focus

on artistic activities transgressing limits of

particular genres, using various languages,

searching for codes of communication with the

audience beyond dramatic text and in the space

of experiment); own artistic activity: work on

their own productions, including performances,

theatre-related projects, artistic and socially

oriented action as well as other forms of cultural

activities; cultural education: exchange of

theatre-related experiences and practices,

programs of perfecting acting techniques,

training artistic leaders and cultural animators,

promoting knowledge about the theatre as a

method of self-development, promoting

experimental and alternative theatre, improving

knowledge, techniques and skills of people

interested in folklore and traditions of various

cultures.

The Kana Theatre continues the idea of the

cultural centre formulated by Zygmunt

Duczyński. The program of the Kana’s activities

is based on the key concept of originality and

personal aspect in relation to both particular

artists and the artistic team: selection of topics,

projects and areas of activity is closely related to

both the range of interests (and research) of

individual members of the team, and to the

collectively worked out program line. This

position makes it possible to maintain the

continuity and progressive character of the

accomplished projects.

Sea eagleSe eagle ( or white-tailed

eagle) is the most

important national

symbol of Poland - it

appears on the Polish

emblem. But it is not

actually an eagle, but a hawk.

These birds have their sanctuary in Szczecin -

wounded birds recover their strengh here, but

then they stay and live on islands, that are in the

geographic center of the city, although they are

wild and under the Nature 2000 Programme.

Comorants' forest

Comorants are specic

birds. They live in large

herds and like to sit on

big and helthy trees. But

their excrements are

toxic, so trees that they

sit on get sick and die. Then they nd new trees.

That is how cormorants forest was made. You

can nd it on the north-west side of the Dąbie

Lake.

Old Town Hall - The Szczecin History Museum

The rst mention of the

wooden market hall,

which was also the venue

for the deliberations of

the court and the

meetings of the city

councillors called “theatrum”, dates back to

1245. The current Gothic town hall hails from

mid-15th Century, with Henryk Brunsberg

considered to be its builder. The richly-decorated

façade featuring glazed stones adds a painterly

style to the structure. The building has arcades

on its south wall, which used to play host to

court proceedings on summer days. The City

Council convened here twice a week.

From the 14th Century the resolutions of the

City Council were announced twice a year, i.e. on

1 May and 29 September. As some of them were

quite peculiar, it is no wonder that such

announcements sometimes left the city in tumult.

Examples included the introduction of the

anti-Hussite tax in 1428 and the raising of the

prices of spirits in 1616. Less severe regulations

were e.g. the resolution from 1418 against

calumniators and rumourmongers slandering

“lords, dukes, knights, squires, ladies, girls,

priests, and vassals...”, or one law from 1558

which limited the luxury and excess during

wedding celebrations, baptisms, and funerals.

From 5 to 13 December 1570 the town hall

hosted a Peace Congress ending the Northern

Seven Years' War between Sweden and

Denmark.

After the damage suered during the

Brandenburg sieges, it was rebuilt in the

Baroque style and served its purpose until the

City Council was moved to the New Town Hall in

The National Museum in Szczecin — TheMuseum of Regional Traditions

The Museum of Regional

Traditions is located in

Baroque Landed Gentry

House (Pommersche

Landsmannschaft), built

in years 1726–1727

according to the order of Prussian king Frederick

William I. The building was designed by Gerhard

Cornelius de Walrave (1692–1773), the author

of, among others, famous Kłodzko fortess and

fortications of Szczecin.

The palace served as the session hall of

Pomeranian provincial authorities and a royal

residence during king's stays in Szczecin. Over

the entrance, there is the coat of arms of

Pomerania and at the top of the facade – coat of

arms of the king of Prussia against a background

of panoply (crossed military equipment) and

allegoric images of royal virtues: Justice and

Sagacity.

In the period between the world wars the palace

was re-arranged into the seat of the Pomeranian

State Museum (Pommersches Landesmuseum),

and after World War II the building was taken

over by the Museum of Western Pomerania,

presently the National Museum in Szczecin. It

houses exhibitions of, above all, relics of

Pomeranian art from middle ages to Baroque,

including Romanesque capitals from Kołbacz,

early-Gothic Crucix from Kamień Pomorski, a

portrait of duke Philip I by Lucas Cranach the

Younger and impressive jewels of Pomeranian

dukes from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Ole Bistro & Tapas'Little Spain in the heart

of Szczecin' - this is how

Ole Bistro & Tapas

restaurant located on the

Boulevards can be

described in a few words.

The idea for its creation was born in the minds of

the owners long before the opening, and the

search for a suitable place took over 2 years ...

Having and running your own restaurant was a

natural need. Inspired by the Spanish climate,

they decided to move a small part of the Iberian

Peninsula to their hometown. They wanted to

create a unique place where the door is always

open, the atmosphere is loose and joyful, and the

food and wine delicious and non-standard. The

choice of location was not accidental. A beautiful

view of the Szczecin panorama and the owing

Odra River have made the Szczecin Bulwary an

ideal place. However, before the restaurant

could serve delicious Spanish food, the chefs

carefully composed the menu for two months,

taking care of every detail and repeatedly testing

the menu items. At the end of October 2017, Ole

Bistro & Tapas was oicially opened. A warm,

energetic place has been created, where you

have the opportunity to try wonderful

Spanish-European cuisine and regional

specialties in a pleasant atmosphere, with a

beautiful view and Spanish music in the

background.

Kana Theatre

Kana is an independent

theatre and center

founded and run since

1979 by Zygmunt

Duczyński, and since

2006 by the team he

established.

The Kana Theatre operates in the following

areas: popularization and promotion of culture in

such aspects as: theatre, performing arts, music,

and interdisciplinary forms (with a special focus

on artistic activities transgressing limits of

particular genres, using various languages,

searching for codes of communication with the

audience beyond dramatic text and in the space

of experiment); own artistic activity: work on

their own productions, including performances,

theatre-related projects, artistic and socially

oriented action as well as other forms of cultural

activities; cultural education: exchange of

theatre-related experiences and practices,

programs of perfecting acting techniques,

training artistic leaders and cultural animators,

promoting knowledge about the theatre as a

method of self-development, promoting

experimental and alternative theatre, improving

knowledge, techniques and skills of people

interested in folklore and traditions of various

cultures.

The Kana Theatre continues the idea of the

cultural centre formulated by Zygmunt

Duczyński. The program of the Kana’s activities

is based on the key concept of originality and

personal aspect in relation to both particular

artists and the artistic team: selection of topics,

projects and areas of activity is closely related to

both the range of interests (and research) of

individual members of the team, and to the

collectively worked out program line. This

position makes it possible to maintain the

continuity and progressive character of the

accomplished projects.

DINING

Szymon Maksymiuk

Szczecin oers an abundance of restaurants to

suit all tastes and pockets. The choice is yours

but whilst here, you ought to indulge in a hearty

traditional Polish meal.

Savour one of Poland's favourite meat dishes

"kielbasa" (Polish sausage), and do not forget to

sample the numerous pickled dishes as well.

Polish food is truly avoursome and plentiful.

In Szczecin, we have few regional dishes, such as

Pasztecik, Paprykarz Szczeciński, Szczecińskie

Pierniki, and Frytburger.

Paprykarz Szczeciński: A Polish canned sh

spread made from ground sh, rice, tomato paste

and vegetable oil, seasoned with onion, salt, and

spices. The recipe was developed in the 60s on a

20th-century laboratory of Deep-Sea Fishing and

Fishing Sevices Company "Gryf" from Szczecin.

Those were the golden years of the cult can.

Szczecin production nished in the early 90s.

Later the brand has been used by many

manufacturers.

Pasztecik – Pasztecik (Pastry) is a favourite

snack of many Szczeciners and tourists. Pastries

are made of deep-fried rolled yeast cake, stued

with meat or vegetable lling. The most popular

stuings are meat and mushrooms with cheese.

Destination: SzczecinPublishing date: 2021-07-04

Page 59: Szczecin - ArrivalGuides

On the outside, the cake is crispy and slightly

crunchy; inside it is tender and delicate. Pastries

are usually served with spicy beetroot soup. The

origins of Szczecin pastries dates back to 1969

when the rst bar serving meals cooked with the

use of a machine bought from the Russian army.

The same bar is still serving them. In 2019, there

was the 50th birthday of the bar called

“Pasztecik”, the one that rst served pastries.

The bar is located at aleja Wojska Polskiego 46.

Szczecińskie Pierniki (Szczecin’s gingerbread

cookies): The tradition of baking gingerbread

cookies in the Pomerania region dates back to

the mid-nineteenth century. Stettiner

Poperkoken could be bought in all bakeries and

pastry shops in the city. Sweet treats took the

shape of ships, sailors, anchors, sh, and

seagulls. Today, we can also boast the fragrant,

edible souvenir in "Filipinka" bakery at

Witkiewicza 1b street.

Frytburger – It’s the local version of a kebab. It’s

is just meat with fries in a roll with sauces. You

can always go with the vegan version without

meat, which is called Bułka z Frytkami – roll with

fries.

Spiżarnia Szczecińska

This place is at least as

Szczecin, as Szczecin

itself: you can order the

"Sea Days", "Griin's

delicacy" or "Sedina's

Ole Bistro & Tapas

'Little Spain in the heart

of Szczecin' - this is how

Ole Bistro & Tapas

restaurant located on the

Boulevards can be

described in a few words.

The idea for its creation was born in the minds of

the owners long before the opening, and the

search for a suitable place took over 2 years ...

Having and running your own restaurant was a

natural need. Inspired by the Spanish climate,

they decided to move a small part of the Iberian

Peninsula to their hometown. They wanted to

create a unique place where the door is always

open, the atmosphere is loose and joyful, and the

food and wine delicious and non-standard. The

choice of location was not accidental. A beautiful

view of the Szczecin panorama and the owing

Odra River have made the Szczecin Bulwary an

ideal place. However, before the restaurant

could serve delicious Spanish food, the chefs

carefully composed the menu for two months,

taking care of every detail and repeatedly testing

the menu items. At the end of October 2017, Ole

Bistro & Tapas was oicially opened. A warm,

energetic place has been created, where you

have the opportunity to try wonderful

Spanish-European cuisine and regional

specialties in a pleasant atmosphere, with a

beautiful view and Spanish music in the

background.

(Festung Stettin), where

you can see a powerful

system of fortications. In the XIX-th century,

the city began to eliminate the Stronghold,

however, the underground part was left, because

there was no need to liquidate it. In XXI-st

century the preserved monument of defense is

not to be underestimated.

In the underground part of the fortress you can

ind a pub. A unique place: "Ceglana" uses charm

of the stronhold and combines it with a space of

a large beer garden on the upper level.

First place so hidden on

complement to standard

public transport. There

are almost 90 stations to

choose from, and their

current lling can be

seen on the system page

(https://bikes-srm.pl/en/station-map/). It can be

Using a city bike is not only convenient, but also

full price list of using a city bike can be viewed

here (https://bikes-srm.pl/en/price-list/).

Registration in our system is extremely easy -

just ll out a short form

People who are already registered in city bike

do not need to register - their accounts are also

valid in Szczecin.

The account on a city bike works on a pre-paid

basis (like a prepaid phone) - after renting a
