Board Mtg. MinutesFEBRUARY 4, 2002 Commodore Alan Schamp calledthe meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

COMMODORE: Alan S. confirmed that prepa-

rations for the (closed) FleetCaptain clinic are securely under-way. This is a clinic open only tothe 2002 Fleet Captains. Gary isassembling a special clinic packetfor the fleet captains. Alan alsotalked about the possibility ofoffering online registration forSYSCO races. After some discus-sion, we decided that a printablePDF form from an online sitewould be acceptable, but thatSYSCO is not prepared to processonline registrations at this time.

VICE COMMODORE/RACECAPTAIN:

Larry Johnson confirmed the2002 Fleet Captains. Bill Husebywill moderate an informal discus-sion series that is open to anyone. The group will meet on four con-secutive Wednesdays at 6 p.m.,beginning February 13, in Bill’soffice in Vancouver. See www.sig-madzn.com for more information.Larry downloaded some racecommittee software from the USSailing site. He will customize theformat and hopes to put it to use in

place of the race sheets used byrace committees. The Board againtalked about the “no on-the-waterregistration” rule this year. Thisrule appears in the OCSA RaceBooklet, and will be enforced byour Race Captain and by theSYSCO race committees.

A reminder to skippers: this rulewill be strictly enforced.

REAR COMMODORE: Gary Whitney opened discus-

sion about using a small cannonand whistle, in addition to the“traditional” air horn and flags, that some committees use duringstart sequences. Most of the Boardfelt that this would be unreason-ably burdensome on the racecommittee. It would require yetanother committee person tomanage those starting sounds and,of course, the wind, rigging andsail noise, not to mention yelling, would drown out the sound of asmall starting cannon and/orwhistle. We will continue with thecurrent flag and horn signals.

TREASURER:Alan Boguslawski reported a

$5,770 bank balance. We talked alittle bit about the $300+ increasein Poncho’s annual insurancepremium for 2002. We will revisitthis at a later meeting.

SECRETARY/MEMBERSHIP: The minutes of the last

meeting were approved. Second(final) membership notices weremailed to members on January 30.Membership renewal forms andchecks not received at the P.O. Boxby March 1 are at risk for termina-tion of membership, and the mem-ber would have to reapply for mem-bership. I presented two new mem-bers for approval: Rich Freeman,of Vancouver, owns Raven’s Dream,a Catalina 36; and, Eric Rimkus, of Portland, owns Slightly Naughty,a Santana 22. Upon motion andsecond, both applications wereapproved. I have obtained a smallsupply of Past Commodoreburgees and will contact formerCommodores to find out if anyoneis in need of a replacement.

CRUISING: There is no planned cruise for

February. Vicki confirmed that thisyear’s Ladies’ Cruise will be heldMay 18 and 19. She also announcedthat there is a Ladies’ Cruise prepmeeting on February 16 at 9:00a.m. at the Elmer’s at Delta Park.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Alan Schamp, Larry Johnson,

Gary Whitney, Alan Boguslawski,Bill Sanborn, Vicki Sanborn andTraffic.

The meeting was adjourned at7:30 p.m., without objection.

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTEDREBT, SECRETARY

As I reflect back to when wewere racing our Catalina 22 anddid some traveling to other venues,it sometimes would take a couplestarts to figure out what was goingon. Every location had a differentformat that they followed forannouncing the course, what fleetstarted next, how the flags weredisplayed, and all the local rules. We would pull into town, splashthe boat, make the skippers meet-ing, “look” at the handout and goracing. As you make final adjust-ments while sailing the boat is notthe time to try to figure out “Whatare they trying to tell us? What doesthat mean? How much time is left?”

I can tell you from experiencethat it is very frustrating when youwant to sail well in a 5-race regattaand after the second race you areway down the list because youhaven’t figured out the coursemarks or the Committee’s signalsand are late at the line. Or worse, your are in the wrong start and areprotested for being a nonstarter inthe starting area.

As we implement the newstarting system, most racers aregoing to have a lot of questionsuntil we get used to the new look.Lots of folks have put a good num-ber of hours into getting this readyand will be doing training forCommittees, skippers and crew toshow everyone how it works. Youneed to attend one of the trainingsessions so when your Committeeassignment arrives you will beready, or just so you know what’sgoing on. The new fleet assign-ments will cause confusion forsome so ask those questions now.Just prior to the start is not thetime to try to figure out what is

going on. That is when you need tobe getting the boat and crew readyand making final adjustments forthe sailing conditions.

And while we are talking aboutwhat happens just prior to theStart, don’t plan on showing upwith a last minute race registrationand expect the committee to take itand to score you for that race

(unless your know that it is a BeerCan Race). I don’t know all of thelimits, but the Race Captain musthave your signed form and fee andhave added your name to the com-mittee’s score sheet before thecommittee can score you. Thatdeadline is printed in the RaceNotice. Put it in the mail early.(Period, end of discussion).

Commodore’s CommentsALAN SCHAMP

Thanks to everyone that helpedout with the SYSCO booth at thePortland Boat Show. Gary Whitneydid a great job in laying out thebooth and organizing the volun-teers. The booth was quite fetchingand well organized. I think that thisevent is important to the club inthe long run since it provides somevisibility to people that are new tothe Portland sailing scene. It wasalso fun to man the booth andmingle with those who passed by.

Larry Johnson is really movingahead on organizing the fleets forthis year’s racing season. He’srecruited all of the Fleet Captainsand organized race committee clin-ics to be held this month to intro-duce the new starting system andcover the bases on how he wants

the committees to operate. GaryWhitney and Sue Burns havehelped in putting together theprogram to be covered at the clinic. This clinic will be a big help to our Fleet Captains in implementingthe new system and it will helpbring consistency in the waySYSCO Race Committees performthroughout the season.

The off-season is rolling byreally fast. I’ve started a list ofboat preparations for the comingseason and, as usual, it looks prettydaunting. At least the preparationsfor the Offshore won’t be as bad as it was two years ago when wedid it for the first time. Anyway, the work will be worth it once thesailing season gets under way.
