Syracuse University Career Services is pleased to present the results of the Syracuse University Class of 2011 Placement Report. The following provides information on the post-graduate activities of bachelor’s degree recipients from December 2010 and May, June, and August 2011. This report is based on responses from 1,313 out of 2,569 bachelor’s degree recipients, representing 51 percent of the graduating class. This is a substantial improvement in the response rate of 37, 40, and 35 percent in the previous three years. Most of the information in this report was received in response to an online survey e-mailed to graduates in October 2011, with reminder e-mails sent in November and again in December. This report also represents a collaborative effort between Career Services and individual schools and colleges. We would especially like to thank all of our colleagues in the Career Services Network who contributed information to this year’s report: Connie Caldwell from the School of Architecture; Sarah Hagelin from the School of Information Studies; Angela Petrucco from the Martin J. Whitman School of Management; the staff of the Career Development Center in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications; and Karen Davis from L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science. Highlights of this year’s report include:

For 2011, 65 percent of respondents report that they were employed full-time. This is an improvement on the 60% reporting full-time employment for 2010 but still not back to the 74 to 79 percent reporting full-time employment between 2003 and 2008.

This year’s graduates have been successful in finding positions in their fields as 90 percent of

those who found work indicated that their position was related to their career goals. While still fairly high, it is down from the 94 percent in 2008 and 93 percent in 2007 who responded that their positions related to their career goals.

Graduates reporting that they are continuing their studies stayed consistent at 20 percent. For

the previous two years, 21 percent of respondents indicated that they were attending graduate school full-time. These percentages are higher than normal as many graduates decide to pursue an advanced degree rather than tackle what they perceive to be a difficult job market.

The overall placement rate (full-time employment plus graduate school attendance) for the Class of 2011 rose to 85 percent after hitting a low of 81 percent for the class of 2010. Previous years saw placement rates of 86 percent in 2009, 94 percent in 2008 and 95 percent for 2006 and 2007.

More 2011 graduates found their jobs more quickly this year as 41 percent of those employed after six months found positions prior to graduation. This compares to 39 percent in 2010 and 29% in 2009.

Following are some additional highlights from the Class of 2011 Placement Report:

Salaries continue to stagnate. The average salary for the Syracuse University Class of 2011 was $42,600 a slight drop from $43,000 in 2010 and on par with the average salary in 2008 of $42,400.

Even in a difficult job market, the most effective method by which graduates find positions continues to be through developing their own employment leads. Forty four percent of all respondents report that they obtained their position by either networking or applying directly to an organization.

Internships continue to be a strong source of jobs for 2011 graduates as 19 percent reported obtaining their position through an internship. Though not as high as the 25 percent reported in 2009, it still reflects a continuing trend by employers of filling full-time hires from their intern programs.

The geographic profile of our graduates remains very similar to past years. Our graduates found employment in 39 states and several foreign countries, but most stay within this region of the country. For 2011, 49 percent of respondents who are employed full-time are working in New York State. Another 19 percent report working in one of the states adjoining New York (MA, CT, VT, NJ or PA.) For 2011, 8 percent indicated that they were employed in Central New York, down a bit from the past few years. Fifty eight percent of respondents attending graduate school full-time are doing so in New York State with another 12 percent in adjoining states. In 2010, the percentage of respondents reporting full-time employment in New York State was 54 percent, and 56 percent reported attending graduate school in New York State.

Of all 2011 graduates who reported that they are attending graduate school full-time, 33

percent are enrolled at Syracuse University. Other schools that were popular for 2011 graduates were Columbia University, George Washington University, Fordham University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois, and the University of Southern California. Seven percent of graduates who report that they are attending graduate school full-time are in law school, and nine percent report that they are attending medical programs.

The remainder of this report provides more detailed placement outcomes for Syracuse University and each of its schools and colleges.
