ABOUT THE MUSIC

Johannes BrahmsHungarian Dances No. 5 and 6Hungarian Dances, a set of 21 dances published in two sets in 1869 and 1880, capitalized on two musical trends of the 19th century: dance-style pieces written for piano four-hands (a single piano played by two pianists) and compositions inspired by Central European folk music. One important influence was the Hungarian violinist Eduard Reményi who taught Brahms about Gypsy music

and Hungarian dances called csárdás. Brahms was enthralled and used the rhythms and melodies of this music as his inspiration for his Dances.

Most of the dances are rapid, energetic pieces. Imitating the mercurial spirit of Hungarian folk music, some of the dances change tempo midway. Dance No.5 transforms the intimate drama of the Gypsy band into a big orchestral party – with wild string melodies and brassy foot-stomping rhythms. The

sixth Hungarian Dance starts with a slow teaser before the marked Vivace tempo takes hold.

Matthew DrummTo the Max! Composed by Symphony Tacoma’s own Matt Drumm, To The Max! is a tribute to jazz drummer Max Roach (1944-2002). A pioneer of the bebop era, Roach demonstrated extensively that drums are a solo instrument able to play themes, variations and cohesive lyrical phrases. “What I like most about Roach’s drumming is his soloing is very melodic—not the typical pyrotechnics you see in many drum solos,” said Drumm.

Drumm followed Roach’s style of a theme interspered with improvisation in To The Max! Comprising three movements for percussion quartet, each movement can be played alone or combined with the others for a complete concert program.

Nebojsa Jovan ZivkovicTrio Per Uno Serbian native Nebojsa Zivkovic is one of the world’s most performed composers for percussion music. He is recognized as one of the top marimba and percussion soloists and as one of the most unique and expressive artists in the field today.

Trio Per Uno is an exhilarating trio for multi-percussion. This piece has three distinct movements, each with its own tone and instrumentation that make them truly unique from one another. It features quick tempos, abrupt surface changes and complex rhythms all of which require three competent and experienced percussionists to perform well.
