2G-IS24 : 2nd Generation iSpectrum “BlackBox”

• With a frequency range of 700 MHz to 2.7GHz and 24 input ports, the iSpectrum is a fundamental component in the network.

• It is widely used in DAS environments to monitor and analyze spectrum waveforms and create appropriate SNMP alarm notifications.

The New Age of Venue Support

Added Capabilities using the iSpectrum:» Automatic continuous recording of

uplink performance and individual alarm recordings for easy playback and analysis

» Detection and recording of interference

» Ability to configure 10 alarms per port for a total of 960 specific performance alarm possibilities

» 24/7 Remote Access via the intranet for support and optimization

UL & DL traffic generation test in the Dual Spectrum Mode.

Operations, Engineering & Performance Tools

Advanced Analysis• All alarms are auto recorded for

easy retrieval and playing• Alarm recording replays 90

seconds prior to alarm condition and 90 seconds after the alarm condition clears

• No hunting through large files to find the moment the alarm occurred

• Run a report at any time during alarm playback

• Use spectrum analyzer features during playback for pinpoint analysis

Network “BlackBox” Functionality

Everything is Saved• The built in hard drive auto

continuously records all spectrum activity across all ports

• Go back in time and replay any port for any time period

• Download a recorded file to your computer for playback anytime, anywhere

• Built in local replayer software is built in the iSpectrum and is always available to be used to replay the downloaded file

• No other system in the industry allows you to go “back in time” so easily to manage your network

Your Network’s “Flux Capacitor” that lets you go back in time!

Installation Considerations

• The iSpectrum has the flexibility to tap into the RF signal from many sources, ideally from a dedicated, properly attenuated UL or DL monitor port on either the DAS or on the POI, as on the SYM SPOI Models (SP4S-7021).

– The POIs present at this site are not ideal candidates to use for the signal tap due to the attenuated combined signal.

– The combined signal at the TX/RX 90 degree connector on the eNB was also not ideal due to the strong DL signal that saturated the UL when amplified, but would be a good choice for a dedicated DL monitor port.

– The I/O port shown below was the best candidate that had the best UL signal as well as an unfiltered DL signal reflection which can be seen concurrently with the UL in iSpectrum because the bandwidth is within a100 MHz range.

– A connection to the DAS is also an ideal choice, but this is sometimes challenging to get approval and ports from the neutral host provider and doesn’t provide the flexibility of carrier owned ports

Good choice Bad Choices

iSpectrum #5 700 MHz

iSpectrum #6 700 MHz

This view of the status from the GUI before Event Start shows sectors that are experiencing performance issues and is a good place for the performance team to begin their focus

Industry best practice is to use the GUI to find sectors with issues, use any additional tools, if needed and available to drill down deeper, and send a walk team, if present to perform call and throughput tests

If necessary, use the spectrum live view to determine if attenuation adjustments need to be made and watch the immediate performance change if adjustments are made

Interference Identification, Tracking, and Alarming

• This view is from the recorded local Replayer program in 3D view with marker added to show the exact center frequency

• The majority of the alarms are due to an interference

• Interference source is at Marker 1: 2130.16 MHz

• The narrow red block is a targeted alarm block tuned to monitor and record the interference spike

• This alarm will allow precise analysis of when the interference source begins and ends transmission

Side Band Encroachment

• This snapshot is from the reporting feature that can be run during live spectrum monitoring or from recordings. This is from a live view report

• Here is another view of the side-band Power Threshold that should be investigated further

• This view also shows Power Threshold levels in the carrier channels during the Event, which is to be expected

• The in-band Power Threshold can be adjusted to be less sensitive depending on Verizon’s desired performance KPIs

RX Frequency Shift

• This view is from the live spectrum display approximately one hour before Event Start and is currently still an issue

• Unit 5 700 MHz units display in interesting spectrum issue

• It appears that the spectrum is not aligned with the center frequency and should be investigated why the signal is out of bounds

• This will have significant call quality issues

Poor Sector Performance

Spectrum performance should be a solid bell curve of high traffic.

This sector is experiencing issues

evidenced by periodic dips in power transmission

SYM Points of Interface

• Standardize and Control your RF Environment. Excellent Performance, Minimal Space, Customized Configurations

• Point of Interface houses multiple components in one enclosure to ensure optimal signal distribution between multiple base stations and multiple distributed antenna systems.

The Passive SPOIs unique design enables both MISO and MIMO configurations in one box.

With low PIM and high isolation, the SPOI is the superior choice for DAS conditioning

for both single operator or neutral host applications.

Bird’s Eye View & Quick Access

• Log in with default credentials:– User ID: admin– Password: spoi

• A graphical interface will be displayed showing the Bird’s Eye view of all units for an immediate system status

• Clicking on any unit will take direct the user directly to that unit for operation

• Clicking on any active card will display the information for that interface.

• If Remote shelves are connected, they would have their own tab in this single GUI connection, making it very streamlined and simple to maintain this system.
