Ordinarily a lamp bulb gets darker as it operates throughout itslife because of the fact that the tungsten evaporating from thehot filament travels to the cool bulb wall and ends-up as a blackdeposit on the inner glass wall of the bulb.In the ordinary course of events, the filament of an incandescentlamp of relatively high wattage (500 watts, for example) cannotbe compressed into a small glass bulb or tube because the high heatgenerated is more than the bulb walls can withstand when thefilament is positioned too close to the side walls. In the "I.Q." line, however, a Quartz lamp bulb is used, whichcan readilv withstand a bulb wall temperature of 600" C or higher, which makes it possible to position the filament closer to the buibwall, thereby permitting the use of more powerful filaments inmore compact envelopes. (The 500 watt "I.Q." lamp, for example,is no iarger than a fountain pen )Iodine is introduced into the Quartz bulb in the form of crystalsduring the course of its manufacture.Because of the continuing action of the iodine within the bulb, notungsten deposit accumulates on the bulb walls . . . and the high-bulb wall temperature even incinerates dust particies on the outsideof the Quartz bulb.

Comparing this light source with existing lamps ofthe same wattage we first see that "f.Q." lamps last2000 hours - or twice as long as conventional types. In addition, their efficiency throughout life is higherthan lamps of the PS bulb shape because of the pre-viously mentioned iodine cycle. This is markedly truein the 1500 watt, 277 voit lamps, \ryith an efficiency of22 lumens per watt throughout life, whereas a highvolt PS52 lamp has a comparable efficiency of only14.5 LPW. This represents 50% more light from the"I.Q." lamp.In the case of the 500 watt "I.Q." lamp versus the newlyannounced 500 watt PS35 "axial filament" lamp, ini-tial lumens for each lamp are the same. Due to almostperfect maintenance, however, the "I.Q." lamp willproduce l0/c to 20/c more light throughout life which,as previously stated, is 2000 hours as compared to thestandard lamp life of 1000 hours.

OPERATING ''MUSTS''"I.Q." lamps must be positioned within 4 degrees of horizontal to keep the iodine vaporized.. Portions of the bulb wall may reach 6000 C in normal operation, hence sensible precautions mustbe taken to keep combustible materials away from the bulbs.. . Lamps must be provided with external fuses to prevent destructive arcing at the end of life. (Thisfeature can be incorporated in the fixtures, serving the sam purpose that the internal fue does in mostgas-filled lamps. ), . . Because the bulb wall temperature must be kept high enough to vaporize the iodine, the lampshould not be used where it is exposed to cold blsts of air. In such locations a heat resistantglass shield is recommended to prevent c@ling.. . . Moisture from hands, grease and other contamination left on a lichted lamD can cause devitrificationof the quartz. Should the lamp become contaminated in any way, clean with water and/or methanoland dry with a clean soft cloth before using.

{ncandescent lamps come back into their own with the advent ofIodine Quartz lamps, fitting into many new and interesting indoorand outdoor applications that call for a lamp of small size, highoutput, and a highly concentrated, directable iight source. When used with properly designed reflectors, "f.Q." lamps makepossible a precise control of light. The iodine Quaftz line offers greatopportunities to floodlighting equipment manufacturers. Reflectordesign principies for iine sources can control beam spread to achievea wide, fan-shaped pattern or a rectangular-shaped wider beam, asrequired. The 1500 watt, high voltage type fits well into 480/277 volt distri-bution systems, which are steadily growing in popularity for bothindustrial and commerciai applications.
