The COP* Starters are Glostat starters having, inaddition, a thermally operated circuit breaker othe reverse side of the upright supporting plateThe breaker consists of a small resistor, a bimetalatch as one contact and a phosphor bronze springas the other contact" The current to the startepasses through these elements which are held icontact position by the latch. XThe Sylvania Glostat is a glow discharge type ofstarter, providing excellent starting time and lifecharacteristics. This starter switch is locatedinside a glass envelope which is {illed with an inertgas such as neon. lfhe electric discharge throughthe gas creates enough heat to close the normallyopen bimetal switch blade, thus fully energizingthe lamp cathodes. Upon contact in the switch,the arc is extinguished and the gas, cooling, allowsthe bimetal switch blade to operl once more, thusstarting the lamp. Should the lamp fail to light,the starting process is repeated again and again.The Glostat is designed to take plenty of punish-ment of all kinds and particularly under failedlamp conditions.
