Barbecue held in support of Fort McMurray residents

A barbecue was held on Saturday at Sobey’s where hot dogs, pop and other goodies were offered in exchange for donations to support Fort McMurray evacuees.

All the money collected will stay local and go towards helping residents of Fort McMurray that are currently

Sobey’s recently held a fundraiser to support evacuees staying in Sylvan Lake

staying in town. The weather was chilly but this didn’t stop the many

volunteers from fi ring up the grill and serving hot dogs to the community members that dropped by.

The barbecue saw several people including children who happily ate their hot dogs with all food provided by Sobey’s Sylvan Lake.

Sobey’s co-owner Andrea Bromley said she thought the event went well and mentioned that after just one hour of the barbecue, she had already seen many people coming up getting a hot dog and dropping off donations.

Some people didn’t even take a hot dog they just want-

ed to donate money explained Bromley.“I think it’s great,” Bromley said. “We’re Albertans.

What else do you expect on May long weekend? People are prepared. The community just wants to help and they want to support. People come out and it’s great.”

Considering many of the families from Fort McMurray have lost everything while having been uprooted, Bromley said it is important to support them.

Bromley further mentioned the community, as a whole, has been amazing so far with the amount of donations.

“Everything that Sugarbelle has done, they have gone over and beyond,” Bromley said.

She said how the customers that shop at her store have been amazing in donating also. To date Bromley said they had raised around $18,000 in donations.

COOKING HOT DOGS – Community volunteer Kim Bichel cooks hot dogs at the barbecue set up at the Sobeys to raise donations for local Fort McMurray evacuees.

Jasmine O’Halloran–Han/Sylvan Lake News

Sobey’s fundraiser barbecue“People just want to help out however they can,” she

said. “People cannot fathom what the Fort McMurray residents staying in this community have gone through. People just want to help.”

“It’s amazing to see the outpour of generosity and how the community comes together to support people in their time of need,” she added.

Being the co-owner of the store, Bromley said her and her husband Brad are happy to help out.

She said they have been touched by the generosity of the community and will continue to help and support in any way they can.

Janine Waldo, a volunteer who helped run the barbe-cue said everything ran well.

She was worried people may not come to the barbe-cue with the weather being chilly, but people were very supportive.

“People are being very generous,” Waldo said. She said she was happy to be participating in the bar-

beque and helping people from Fort McMurray.“Seeing what is happening to these people and them

having to evacuate kind of breaks my heart. It’s nice to feel like we’re helping them out,” she said. “Even if they are only in Sylvan Lake temporarily, we’re helping to make it a comfortable stay where they feel welcomed.”

She said when she was enlisting other volunteers she had a lot of feedback and more than enough people will-ing to help out.

“When we were asking for donations like coolers and propane tanks people were very generous. When we were asking for volunteers to come today to help work the barbecue we had tons. We actually had to turn peo-ple away,” Waldo said. “We had so many people offering, the community has been really supportive.”

“People want to do what they can to help,” Waldo added.

Local event aims to bridge gap between youth and seniors

Walk The Talk will be held at Centennial Park on June 7 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. where seniors from the Bethany Care Society and Sylvan Lake Seniors Centre will be matched up with a student from École Fox Run School.

After being partnered up the senior and student will walk along Centennial Park and read different questions posted along the trail.

These questions will be along the lines of ‘Do you have pets?’, ‘Do you volunteer?’ and ‘What are you hobbies?’.

This is all to help the student and the senior form a relationship.

This is the third consecutive year for the Walk The Talk event to take place.

It is part of the Building Bridges to Bridge the Gap program.

The whole point of this program is to help close the gap between young stu-dents and older seniors in the community.

“Our purpose is to develop these rela-tionships and build assets in both the senior and the student,” said chair of the Building Bridges sub committee Kim Olsen.

There will be around nine questions posted along the trail, which is sure to cre-ate good conversation between the senior and the student.

The questions will be new this year and will be appropriate to answer for both the senior and the student.

By answering these questions the stu-dents and seniors sometimes fi nd they have more in common with each other than what they may have thought.

“It’s great to see the intergenerational relationships being made,” Olsen said.

This helps for good conversation and learning for both the student and the senior.

Seniors interested in taking part in this can contact Kim Olsen at 403-887-1137, ext. 227.

Railside Bowl and Pizza Hut was a buzz Thursday afternoon as franchise owner Daud (David) Ahmed opened the doors to Fort McMurray evac-uees offering them free bowling, pool and pizza.

This created for a stress free environment, where evacuees could mingle with one other and forget about the outside world.

This was Ahmed and his staffs’ goal and it worked out beautifully. Everyone had a blast bowling and playing pool while eating delicious pizza.

When the lights went down it wasn’t over, rath-er the show was just be-ginning as the disco lights came on and children got to glow bowl under the neon lights.

Smiles could be seen on everyone’s faces as laugh-ter and energy fi lled the room.

To help make this event successful and relaxing, many of Ahmed’s staff came in on their day off and volunteered to help everything run smoothly.

The idea of offering the event came jointly as Ahmed said they were all discussing what they could do to help out the many families from Fort McMurray here in Sylvan Lake.

“We were thinking maybe we can offer them free pizza and things like that. We thought why

don’t we make use of the place here and get peo-ple to come in. They can interact with each other and we can treat them,” he said.

Offering the place and some free pizza did come with a cost, but in the end the cost is nothing when they are able provide some enjoyment for peo-ple who have been evac-uated from their homes explained the owner.

“It’s not about the cost,” Ahmed said. “We’re look-ing more so towards giv-ing them a chance to come and relax.”

All the bowling area was fi lled with people and when observing at-tendees Ahmed said he was happy with how ev-erything turned out. He could see the smiles on their faces.

He said he spoke to some of the families and they are very appreciative of being there and are en-joying themselves.

“You can see the joy on the kids faces and hear the laugher,” Ahmed said. “I can’t imagine how gloomy it must have been, but now you can see the smiles on peoples faces and it’s priceless. You can’t buy that. It’s some-thing that’s coming out naturally.”

Among the families was Jarratt Umperville, Stacey Coles and their 10 month old baby McKenlee.

Franchise owner offers free bowling, pool and pizza to those from Fort McMurray

Free Bowling – Jarratt Umperville, Stacey Coles and 10 month old McKenzie Umperville were one family from Fort McMurray who enjoyed an afternoon of free bowling and pizza at Railside Bowl and Pizza Hut Thursday.

Jasmine O’Halloran–Han/Sylvan Lake News

said they were given a house in Rocky Mountain House and were invited to stay as long as they need-ed too.

“A family gave us their second home on a 20 acre lot to live until we need to,” Stacey said.

Before being evacuated the three lived in a base-ment apartment which they think is still stand-ing, although they said the houses next to them burned and they are un-sure of the smoke damage they may be face.

Stacey explained how on the day of the evac-uation day which, they were planning to go to the beach. However, upon seeing the wall of fi re facing Fort McMurray they changed their plans quickly and decided to leave.

They were instructed further to grab everything they needed and leave im-mediately.

Stacey said they were going to head south but due to the road being closed they had to head north.

Jarratt describes his ex-perience that day saying he couldn’t eat or sleep or do anything during that day, no doubt due to all the devastation.

Now safe in a com-fortable home in Rocky Mountain House, both say they are very apprecia-tive of the generosity they have been shown.

“I didn’t expect to re-ceive the generous dona-tions that we did,” Stacey said. “Words can’t de-scribe it. Just people com-ing to the door offering you free things like gift cards or anything you need,” Jarratt said.

Even through the dev-astation, being in a place where they can bowl did alleviate some stress.

They said it was relaxing and kept their minds off what had happened. They also had the chance to socialize with other peo-ple from Fort McMurray, which they enjoyed.

Alberta Education has received an application from the Benalto Review Committee for the Benalto School to be converted to a chartered school.

The application was fi led May 11 with the Benalto Review Committee working hard to try and keep the Benalto School open, despite the school’s closure being decided on April 6 with Chinook’s Edge School Division stating it was due to a lack of student enrolment.

With Chinook’s Edge School Division making the decision to close the school, the Benalto Review Committee has fought to keep it open, even though enrolment numbers are steadily declining.

With the committee applying to converge the school into a charted learning facility, Alberta Education must now review the application.

“We have received this charter-school application and my

staff are reviewing it,” said Education Minister David Eggen.Eggen commented further on how school closures are

never easy, having a big impact on families and commu-nities.

Eggen said he understands how this decision was made after extensive community consultation, but also com-ments from a board’s perspective.

“I can speak for boards when I say it is never a decision taken lightly,” Eggen said.

This would be a provincial decision; something the committee has to seek guidance from the provincial government for.

“If they choose to approve it that’s up to Alberta Education,” said superintendent for Chinook’s Edge School Division Kurt Sacher.

Sacher said the school division followed all the regula-tions and procedures required. Later this month they will be going through the normal regulations of disposition of the property.

Sacher said the board has not received a formal request to consider a chartered school application which is typi-cally part of the process.

With Alberta Education receiving an application the Benalto Review Committee now awaits the outcome.

Sacher said any group that wants to pursue applying to transform a school into a chartered institution could do that.

“There is quite a bit of criteria they have to meet in order to be accepted as a chartered school,” Sacher said.

The school division is required to follow formal protocols.Sacher also said the board has not received any formal

request from the parents or from this group in relation to a chartered school.

“There has never been a formal request for them to contemplate,” he said.

Alberta Education will review the application and make a decision in time.

The Benalto School will still close at the end of this school year.

Sylvan Lake Approves 2016 Tax Rate BylawCouncil has passed the

2016 Tax Rate Bylaw. In the original 2016 Budget, Council had approved a combined residential municipal tax rate in-crease of 2.47%, with a

combined non-residen-tial tax rate increase of 1.39%. The assessment growth projection used when preparing the 2016 budget, was $70 million; however, the fi nal amount of assess-ment growth for the

year was $88 million (up 4.6% over 2015), which gave Council an option to lower the original tax rate increase.

The now approved 2016 Tax Rate Bylaw includes:• Combined residential

municipal tax rate in-

crease of 1.9% to 6.018,• Combined non-resi-

dential municipal tax rate increase of 1.5% to 10.406 (this continues to hold the core munic-ipal non-residential tax rate at 9.836 for 2016),

• Sylvan Lakers will

pay more to fund ed-ucation; the provincial school tax requisition is up 6.1%,

• The 2016 Sylvan Lake Foundation requisition remains unchanged at $245,124.Items to note that af-

Third reading given to water and sewer bylawDuring a staff review of Bylaw #16921/2015 it was

noted that Schedule “B” contains wording contradic-tory to the billing formula used that determines how wastewater collection charges are calculated.

The intent and historical practice of charging utili-ty customers for wastewater collection is that waste-water collection rates are set at 80% of the water consumption rate and multiplied by the water usage in cubic metres (m3).

Example (resident - using 20 cubic metres):The previous bylaw wording in effect “doubled up”

the 80% reduction factor from water to wastewater use charges, resulting in wastewater use charges ac-tually being 64% of the water use charges.

The rationale behind wastewater use charges being calculated at 80% of water use charges is derived from the average of potable water that returns to the wastewater system from a utility customer - typical-ly 100% of the water usage during the winter months and, 60Yo during the summer months for an average return rate of 80%.

The current utility billing follows the intended ap-plication of the bylaw with respect to calculation of wastewater charges. Therefore, utility customers will not experience any fi nancial change to their utility charges now that the bylaw is approved.

Forty Days Can Change A LotAs life rushes along, forty days goes by very quickly, and it often seems that we can’t accomplish much in that amount of time. And, especially when dealing with the deeper issues of life such as marriage and family problems, health concerns, fi nancial worries, sin problems and uncertainty in matters of faith and eternity, we may feel that troubles that have been long in the making will probably take a long time to fi x. We can be encouraged, though, to think about what great things God accomplished in only forty days, as the stories tell us in the old and new testaments of the Bible.

Noah and his family were in the ark for forty days during the Great Flood, and then God delivered His eternal promise of love and grace through a rainbow and a dove. Moses communicated with God on Mount Sinai for forty days. Jesus was tempted in the wilderness for forty days, resisting each temptation of the devil by only the use of God’s Word, showing us that we, too, can rely on the Word during life’s trials. Jesus remained on earth for forty days after His resurrection, and it is what happened

in this forty days that I fi nd especially fascinating.

Jesus had twelve disciples, and before His crucifi xion and resurrection, one betrayed Him and the other eleven ran away in fear. Hardly the group, it would seem, to become the leaders of Jesus’ new church after His ascension! But, in forty days fl at, Jesus changed and strengthened these eleven fear-fi lled men, converting them by love, grace and the power of the Holy Spirit into the powerful pastors and teachers we read about in the book of Acts. In only forty days!

The disciples were not strong or perfect in themselves, and neither are we, but their transformation gives us hope that we, too, can be strengthened in whatever troubles we have, and it does not necessarily take a long time. People’s needs are often diff erent, but God and Christ are always the same. Whether you are in need of humbling, repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour for the fi rst time, or feel that your faith and walk have wavered, or simply feel overwhelmed by life, wherever you are, may your next forty days be blessed richly by God and our Lord Jesus Christ!

Swing Into Spring concert sees high attendance

The community was moving their feet and swinging to the beat as the Johnny Summers Little Big Band performed at the Sylvan Lake Community Centre Saturday evening.

Organized by Jazz At The Lake, the music was beautiful and the dance fl oor was always full.

The room was decorated to the tune of a 1940’s theme including cardboard cutouts of people dancing, a white bench set up for photographs and music notes adorning the room.

Ticket sales were high that night with attendees stating it was worth every penny spent.

With rainy weather outside, it was the perfect escape for people to come and have fun indoors.

“It’s a fantastic night. The weather worked in our favour this weekend because we had people who had planned to go out of town for the long weekend and asked if we had tickets for sale because they were staying home,” said Jazz at the Lake co-founder, Eric Allison.

This is Johnny’s ninth year performing at Jazz at the Lake and if you hear him once, you want to hear him again said Allison.

Together with the Little Big Band, they had everyone swinging away.

It was no problem if you didn’t know how to swing dance before hand, there was also a dance teacher who taught several people how to move their feet before the evening began with many relishing the new moves they were taught.

Swing Into Spring is the second of four concerts being held in Jazz At The Lake’s seasonal concert series.

Recently organizers announced that the full festival would be brought back in 2017,

as next year will also be the 15th anniver-sary of Jazz at the Lake.

Listening to Johnny sing and his band play music ranging from between 1935 and 1945 certainly was an evening to remember.

Johnny also kept it modern by singing some Michael Jackson and followed it up with a riveting rendition of an Elvis Presley song.

Being enthusiastic and having fun while performing is part of who Johnny and his band members are, however they also take their music seriously.

“I take the music very seriously but I don’t take myself that seriously,” Summers said. “I’m just trying to groove.”

He continued on to say how he and his band take the music they perform very seriously and said they rehearse it very hard, but once on stage performing they try to let a little loose.

“We just try to grove and swing,” Summers said. “We try to have fun with the crowd and the dancers and really whatever kind of event it is.”

With dancers consistently being on the dance fl oor people were defi nitely having fun.

This was Summer’s hope. He wanted people to enjoy the concert and they most certainly did.

“Music should be something that uplifts people when they come to a live concert and they get something out of it,” Summers said. “It’s not just going to something be-cause they think they should be. I want to make sure they are feeling elated, hopeful, uplifted and moved emotionally.”

The edition of Jazz At The Lake’s seasonal concert series will take place on August 20 with ‘Sounds of Summer’. The concert features Juno and Gemini award winning artist, Tommy Banks.

Tickets are available online at www.jazzatthelake.com.

Talent show brings out spark in local studentsA talent show was held in the theatre at the H.J. Cody

School Wednesday evening where hidden talent could hide no more.

The talent show included singing, dancing, acrobatics and comedy performed by the school’s students.

Dylan Harnett, a student at H.J. Cody, organized the talent show as part of a personal project for the Student

Voice Personal Project with proceeds of the evening going to help people affected by the devastating wildfi res in Fort McMurray.

Harnett’s main focus was to get people involved and to showcase their talents.

“There’s so much hidden talent in this school and no ones really performing. I thought it would be a good idea to have it happen in our school so we can see people shine,” he said.

The talent was defi nitely seen and heard on the evening

For Harnett, the most special aspect about this project was getting to enjoy some additional time spent in his favourite class.

“I get to spend the night with everyone in the class and they are helping me a

lot with the project and just getting involved,” he said.

All of the talented stu-dents who broke out of their shell to share what they were all about were con-gratulated and supported.

For students who fi nd it hard to break from their shell Harnett has one thing to say.

“You shouldn’t be afraid to hide your talent if you have one,” stated Hartnett. “Don’t be scared. There are people here that have talent that I didn’t know anything about and are now showing up and performing. It was incredible.”

SPORTSSPORTSHost Committee pleased with Memorial Cup event

in Red DeerWith the 2016 MasterCard Memorial

Cup at the halfway point, organizers are happy with how the event has gone so far.

“Everything from the Host Committee to the volunteers to the fan support - if any one of those things is lacking at all, none of it works. It really takes a village and a city to make it work,” said Merrick Sutter, co-chair of the Host Committee and vice president of the Red Deer Rebels.

With each game seeing high atten-dance and Fan Fest being a hub as well, Sutter said overall they are happy with the numbers they have seen.

“We have seen many in attendance at Fan Fest and the Molson Canadian Hockey House has been alive every night so far -we’ve had more than 1,500 people every night after the games,” he said. “It has been great.”

With the Rebels seeing a huge win on Sunday night against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, Sutter said the momentum has continued on. “It gives our team a boost of confi dence and obviously we didn’t have our best game on Friday, we played a very good London team. For us to rebound and really, when you’re not champion you want to feel like you belong and youdeserve to be here. Obviously with our performance (Sunday night), I think the players did that. The energy and the excitement of the event just ramps up further.”

The Host Committee has been plan-ning the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup for the last two years and Sutter said it has been great to see everything

come to fruition.“I think what’s most important for

myself in particular and Ron my co-chair is that you fi nd people who are good at their particular fi elds and let them do it, so the credit goes to them and their planning. There have been some small tweaks here and there - most of which the fans wouldn’t notice. But I think the competing teams all seem very happy with their facilitiesand the fans - we have heard nothing but rave reviews. We have the committee to thank for that,” he said.

Upcoming events include the MasterCard Memorial Cup Golf Tournament at the Innisfail Golf and Country Club on Thursday and the Corporate Road Hockey Challenge runs today with the fi nals on Thursday. In the Molson Canadian Hockey House, St. James’ Gate plays tonight with the Bradley Abel Band and the Clayton Bellamy Band playing tomorrow. That is a ticketed event. On Friday, West of Fifth takes the stage with See Alice and Finger Eleven playing Saturday (that is also a ticketedevent.) The Randi Boulton Band will close the Molson Canadian Hockey House on Sunday.

In addition, Sutter said he encourag-es the community to come check out the festivities if they haven’t already.

“I think it’s a huge experience. People fi nd something new every day. There are still tickets available for the post-game concerts on Thursday and Saturday. The Fan Fest is free every day and there is lots to do,” he said. “We look forward toseeing everyone down here.”

According to www.mastercardme-morialcup.ca, the Memorial Cup, one of the most coveted trophies in North

American sport, has a rich tradition that has shaped the way junior hockey is played in North America.

“The trophy was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donat-ed by the Ontario Hockey Association in March,1919, in remembrance of the many soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifi ce for Canada in the First World War. In 2010 the Memorial Cup was rededicated to the memory of all fallen Canadian Military Personnel.”

Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior ‘A’ hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into ‘A’ and ‘B’ classes.

As noted on the web site, in 1971, when junior ‘A’ hockey was divided into major junior and Tier 11 junior A, the Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category and was given to the major junior hockey champions of Canada.

In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old playdown system to determine the champions.

“Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.”

According to the web site, the Memorial Cup became an international trophy in 1983 as the tournament was held outside Canada for the fi rst time, when the Portland Memorial Coliseum was the host arena.

The Woody’s Marathon Event from this past holi-day weekend was - well it was tough. Tough on the volunteers, the organizers and the families watching.

As for the runners, it was tough for us too but not so bad. We knew it would be tough, we expected that. Once a person is running, they warm up. I cannot say the same for the other folks who created the essential elements needed for peo-

only three degrees above freezing plus the rain and wind coming down side-ways - in 12 years I do not remember a more dif-fi cult Woody’s. It did snow one year, but at least snow is dry. I say this year was harder. So a BIG congrat-ulations to all the people that showed up and ran. I know many people that would have rather stayed home in bed, or in the dis-cussions before the race, but they didn’t and kudos to those that put it all out there.

A huge thanks to all of the people that organized, volunteered, cheered and sponsored the event. Running a 10 km race, a half or full marathon re-quires months, often years of dedication and sacrifi ce. It is a bucket list item for a lot of people and I for one was thrilled to cross that line!

Central Alberta Buccaneers enter fi rst week of AFLThe Central Alberta

Buccaneers are offi cially entering their fi rst week of the Alberta Football League (AFL) season.

The Buccaneers have been hard at work pre-paring for the 2016 season after a semi-fi nals exit last year. With their sights on a national champion-ship, the pirate crew has put in much effort, both on and off the fi eld.

Between numerous community and chari-ty events in addition to pre-season practices since January, the Buccaneers are poised for success.

“The team’s expecta-tions for 2016 are sim-ple: win the national championship,” said sec-ond year Buccaneer, Nick Leonidakis. “Our pre-sea-son has gone well; we added a lot of pieces to the team we didn’t have last year. We got a cou-ple bid additions to the offense, which will allow it to compliment our al-ready strong defense.”

In 2015, the Buccaneers had their second-best de-fense in the AFL in terms of yards-given. This sta-tistic does not account for the fact that the Bucs defense was on the fi eld for the majority of game time.

By having a strong of-fense that can eat min-utes off the clock and score points, the defense will be able to keep its en-ergy and, as a result, fur-ther minimize opponent scoring.

“This year is the most talented squad I’ve ever been a part of, by far,” said number 24 Ryan Miller. “Devo [Coach Devon Hand] has brought in the missing pieces we need-ed. Now it’s up to us to put in work and get it done.”

May 28th marks the Buccaneers fi rst game of the 2016 season. The Buc’s will kickoff against long-time rivals, the Grande Prairie Drillers, at Lacombe’s MEGlobal Athletic Park at 6 p.m.

In 2015, the Buccaneers handled the Drillers in Grande Prairie for four quarters, fi nishing with a 37-16 score.

“I feel our offense is going to put up some big numbers. Defensively, I’d like to see us put up some points as well,” said Miller.

Earlier in the off-season, the Drillers were in dan-

ger of folding due to a lack of numbers on the roster. Driller management was able to canvass their area and pull in some big tal-ent and numbers.

“The Drillers took punches from us last year. I’m sure they’ll be as prepared as us for the game and only one team can come out on top, but my expectation for the game is simple: win,” said Leonidakis.

Leading up to the fi rst week of the off-season, the Buccaneers were not only in the weight-room and practice-fi eld, but were also busy fundrais-ing and helping out in the community. This includes their annual ‘Buccaneers Day to Tackle Hunger’ food drive.

On May 7th the crew was able to raise over 2,000 pounds of non-per-ishables for the Lacombe food bank and citizens displaced by the Fort McMurray fi res.

Additionally, the team helped out with the Ronald McDonald House fundraiser ‘Capes and Tiaras Party’. Players, dressed up as super heros and ran football-related drills for the kids in at-tendance. They helped a community group clean the shoreline of Pigeon Lake of algae and other pollution, and they read at local kindergarten and grade one and two class-rooms.

“It’s been a busy off sea-son, but fi nally it’s time to play some ball!”

Ticket are $5, kids get in for free. Fans can watch

the Buccaneers kickoff their 2016 season against the Drillers, May 28th, 6pm, at MEGlobal Athletic Park in Lacombe.
