People outnumbered seats as Innisfail-Sylvan Lake constituents crowded the Penhold Library to hear their MLA hopefuls answer questions on a variety of topics Tuesday night.

The forum was attended by all candidates running in the riding — Don MacIntyre (Wildrose), Patricia Norman (NDP), Kerry Towle (PC) and Danielle Klooster (Alberta Party).

For an hour and a half, they fielded questions on everything from floor crossing to behaviour in the legislature.

Asked what messages they’ve been receiving on the doorsteps of voters, the candidates responded simi-larly, all noting a sense of anger and frustration.

“There’s a sense of dis-may — people don’t want to vote,” said Klooster.

MacIntyre said constitu-ents he’s spoken with feel betrayed by Towle’s deci-sion to cross the floor from the Wildrose Party to the PC Party late last year.

The $100,000 fine against future floor crossers

Election candidates take to the stage as May 5 vote

draws nearput in place by the Wildrose Party, he said, would ensure that doesn’t happen again.

Towle admitted she knew she’d be “in the hot seat” throughout the eve-ning, and said she shared voters’ concerns.

“I can appreciate that Albertans are angry. I was angry too, and when I decided to run in 2012, (Alison) Redford and the PC Party didn’t fit me, and (former Wildrose leader) Danielle Smith did,” she said. “The last two adminis-trations broke a lot of trust in Albertans ... that’s where we needed the Wildrose.

“What we need now is for conservatives to come together; people who stand by their word and their integrity.”

Norman said she’s become unsettled by the amount of “frustration, anger and fear,” she’s heard from constituents. Some have told her that the pros-pect of another PC govern-ment has made them con-sider leaving the province to live elsewhere.

“That scares me,” said Norman. “I don’t want con-stituents to be angry. I’ve heard that people are ready

for change, and they’re fully aware that we’re going to make change in this elec-tion.”

Asked how she’d bring trust back to the govern-ment, Towle pointed to her previous record as MLA.

“Over three years, I have not changed my platform,” she said. “I’ve stood up for seniors ... and been the larg-est voice this riding has seen for a long, long time. My platform remained the same, and that is how you build trust.”

Klooster voiced her con-cern with the “new” PC Party, which she referred to as “undemocratic and dicta-torial.”

“I don’t understand how you can ever trust some-body who ... speaks out against the government and (then) joins them,” she said. “You have to be trustworthy and respectful, and you cannot be that when you are talking out both sides of your mouth.”

MacIntyre voiced a need for improved accountability and transparency, noting the PC Party has “failed to uphold fundamental checks and balances.”

Innisfail-Sylvan Lake candidates Don MacIntyre (Wildrose), Patricia Norman (NDP), Kerry Towle (PC) and Danielle Klooster (Alberta Party) face a full house of constituents at the Penhold Library Tuesday night.

“There’s just far too many in senior positions in our government that are PC appointees,” he said. “They’re nothing more than stooges, and they’ve got to go.”

Norman she felt trust needed to earned by a gov-erning party.

“Any government that gets voted in now that is dif-ferent than the PC Party has a lot to prove,” she said. “We have to earn your trust, we have to run with integrity, we have to stand with what we’ve said, and if we make mistakes, we need to own up to that and say sorry. That’s how I will operate as an elected official.”

Throughout the forum, candidates answered ques-tions on how their respec-tive parties would approach economic diversification, public sector wages, educa-tion funding and budgets.

A predominantly elderly audience penned the ques-tions candidates faced.

A chorus of boos rang out just once on the night when Towle assured that constituents approached her prior to her floor cross-ing as opposed to the con-trary.

A second election forum for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake was scheduled to be held at Meadowlands Golf Club in Sylvan Lake Wednesday night.

STUART FULLARTONSYLVAN LAKE NEWS

It seems like just yester-day I was covering my first provincial election.

The year was 2012, and I was working as a reporter for the Ponoka News — my first journalism gig since graduating from university just a few months earlier.

Four candidates were campaigning to become the next MLA for the Lacombe-Ponoka constituency, and on election night, I was tasked with photographing the winner. That task that saw me driving from Ponoka to Lacombe, and back to Ponoka again, in order to make sure I got the right person.

By the time the unoffi-cial results came in, it was late. But for me, my night was only just beginning.

After photographing all of the people I needed to photograph, and interview-ing all of the people I need-ed to interview, I was required to return to the newsroom and begin writ-ing the results story.

Our deadline was such that I and the other news staff also needed to lay out

JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HANSYLVAN LAKE NEWS

I just completed my sec-ond firefighting course and have definitely learned the basics of how to handle a fire hose. Taking the S401 at the Bentley Fire Department led me to learn the different ways of how to roll, deploy and stack fire hoses and all with my structure fire gloves on. At first this is easier said than done, but now the gloves feel like a natural part of my hands.

But there was one thing that I had noticed during this training and that was how I didn’t fatigue nearly as quickly wearing my gear or even after deploying a hose and then rolling it up again for storage. Deploying a hose can include pulling a rolled-up hose from the top of the fire truck, throwing it

pages for that week’s paper before the sun came up the next morning.

What was supposed to be a late night turned into an early morning, and it wasn’t until around 4 a.m. that we finally wrapped up our tasks and called it a night — or morning, rath-er.

With a county council meeting scheduled for later that morning, I decided against making the drive back to my home in Red Deer, and opted instead for a couple of hours of sleep — in my car.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the next day remains some-thing of a hazy blur.

Because of what turned out to be one of the longest-seeming days of my life, elections now evoke in me many of the same feelings I felt that night — exhaus-tion, fatigue and stress.

I can only imagine what it’s like for the candidates!

They are, after all, the ones that put themselves in the public eye and subject themselves and their views to scrutiny and criticism — all for the benefit of their potential future constitu-ents.

It’s up to you, the voter, to decide which of those candidates are sincere, and which ones truly have the best interest of their riding at heart.

Decide for yourself

which candidate is most worthy of your vote, and then on May 5, do just that — VOTE.

How the election and the future of the constitu-ency and province unfold is

up to you.

over my shoulder and car-rying it to wherever I need it to be. It’s still labour intensive, but it dawned on me that I wasn’t out of breath and I didn’t have to stop to take a breath like I had to in my previous course.

Truth be told I was sur-prised by this as I had won-dered what had changed and why I didn’t feel so insanely tired, worn out and out of breath. This is when I realized my body is adapt-ing to the physical demands of what it takes to be a fire-fighter. ‘Sweet, I’m gaining upper body strength! My body is adjusting to the intensity of my firefighter training’, I thought as I sud-denly looked like I had slept with a coat hanger in my month.

I have been blessed with God giving me my grand-

mother’s petite body type of standing 5-4, with more lower body strength than upper body strength, but truth be told I was scared that gaining upper body muscle mass was not an option and that my body would simply refuse to co-operate with me.

I was also afraid of being severely sore the next day, but my muscles were not screaming the next day.

Inserting additional soles into my firefighting boots made a huge impact as well, and I was pretty surprised to find that my boots fit me much better with some added cushion-ing. I truly realized the impact of these sole addi-tions as I confidently climbed up one of the fire trucks to help stack a fire hose in its bed on top of the truck. This is when it struck

me that being on top of a fire truck helps me to over-come my fear of heights. In fact, being on top of a fire truck is one of my favourite places to be as I feel like I am on top of the world, but unfortunately my com-mander won’t let me stay on top of the truck while it’s moving. I’m always a little bit disappointed but then again, that would be unsafe.

I remember my previous horrid fear of heights, which included me having to focus on looking up whenever climbing a few stairs, and not being able to lean against the railing of a bal-cony. But planting my feet securely on top of a fire truck somehow seems to make the fear of heights float away. Maybe it’s the excitement I feel when being around or on top of a fire truck.

On my way home after my course I had a fulfilling feeling of satisfaction. For once I wasn’t drunk from fatigue. My hard work of gaining physical strength and being committed to learning how to be a fire-fighter has paid off and fuels my desire to learn and be even better at fighting fires.

Being a woman and being a firefighter isn’t as uncommon as what I origi-nally thought and I would encourage any other woman, regardless of body type to try it. Don’t ever tell yourself you can’t do some-thing, just because it may seem difficult. Always give it your best shot.

Charges have been laid following an extensive search of a Markerville-area property that’s been at the centre of a months-long drug trafficking investiga-tion.

Police carried out the search on a rural residence on April 15 in response to reports of suspicious activi-ty taking place. As a result, they found a glut of drugs, weapons and stolen prop-erty.

Police took three men and one woman into custo-dy, while Child Protective Services removed a four-year-old child from the property. The child was par-ented by one of the four accused.

A Sylvan Lake woman is spearheading a project that will benefit Central Albertans affected by cancer.

Debbie Oostindie, along with a group of other deter-mined individuals from Sylvan Lake, is working toward the construction of a wellness centre in Red Deer

Sylvan Lake residents working toward holistic cancer wellness centrethat will offer support for cancer-affected individuals and families throughout the region.

The aim, she said, is to create a holistic facility that will become an affiliate of Wellspring — a national char-ity that tends to the non-medical needs that accom-pany cancer.

Wellspring centres across the country offer cancer infor-

mation sessions, dietary work-shops, counselling services and more.

“We want to enhance and complement services already in place that help cancer patients,” said Oostindie. “There are a great many can-cer patients in Central Alberta, and we want to provide a comprehensive range of sup-ports, resources and programs to improve the quality of the

life of each individual without having the added stress of having to travel.”

Oostindie in her own battle with cancer has been supported by her husband Ian. He too knows the need for such a facility.

“Too often, those who find out they or their family or friends have cancer are hit hard with the news and need immediate support,” he said.

“Wellness centres can be a major support for people with cancer, right from the time when they receive the initial shock of the diagnosis onward.”

Robin Nicholas of the Central Alberta Cancer Centre in Red Deer noted that the centre, upon its comple-tion, will “greatly enhance the journey through cancer for patients and their families.”

“I am excited to be a part of developing this project.”

Both volunteers and finan-cial support are still needed in order to make the wellness centre a reality.

JASMINE O'HALLORAN-HANSYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The Sylvan Lake Management Plan Committee is in the second phase of the Cumulative Effects Management System (CEMS) Plan, which focuses on providing actions that are focused specifically on water quality, according to Lacombe County envi-ronmentalist Blayne West.

She said in the first phase there were a number of issues identified which fall under three main categories — recreational issues, land use and biodiversity and planning.

Eight municipalities have been involved in this committee, including Lacombe County,

Red Deer County, the Town of Sylvan Lake and the summer villages of Norglenwold, Half Moon Bay, Sunbreaker Cove, Birchcliff and Jarvis Bay.

The municipalities jointly chose to focus on the lake's water quality in the next one or two years, said West.

“Together as a group we feel we will have a larger, more concentrated impact,” West said. “If there was no one managing any of the impact on the lake, like anywhere else, it would probably end in over population and negative impact on land use and water quality.”

An executive draft summary states how levels of nitrogen and phosphorous are hard to detect in lake water samples.

“There is a lack of information from the data that we have collected from the water samples so far which does not allow for a conclusive finding,” West said. “Additional water quality sampling and other data sourc-es must be investigated.”

The Sylvan Lake watershed area, which includes the land around the lake and the lake itself, is over 100 square kilometres. Within the watershed area, rainfall, hail or snow will flow down hill through the land areas and end up in the lake.

“There are many sources of chemicals in the watershed,” West said. “These can be from chemicals added to gardens or lawns used in residential homes or acreages. They may also

come from fertilizers added to the golf course or agricultural lands.”

West said the main reason for the plan is to keep the committee on a specific strategy for managing the watershed and the lake.

“The watershed as well as the lake needs to be managed so that land uses such as development, agriculture and recreation are all in balance with the needs of the natural green space,” West said.

The total spent on the second phase of this plan is $42,840.16, with a total budget of $50,000.

The Sylvan Lake Management Plan Committee hopes to have the second phase of the plan approved by June 2015.

In a recent issue of Our Daily Bread, Katie Davis Missionary to Uganda shared a story about an adopted Ugandan girl. The girl said to Katie, referring to her as Mommy. “if I let Jesus come into my heart, will I explode”.

When I read that something exploded in me. Why? When you give your heart to Christ there is an EXPLOSION of Joy in your heart. Until it happens you cannot explain but the ripple eff ect is amazing.

I have known so many believers, born again but have no joy. If you truly known and love The Lord then people should see Joy. A well known scripture, Nehemiah 8:10 says the Joy of The Lord is our strength.

Someone said, If satan can’t steal your joy, he can’t keep your goods(stuff ).

Joy is a force and can be contagious. The average child laughs 300 to 500 times a day, while the average adult only laughs 15 times a day. Did you know that January 24 is “ Global Belly Laugh Day”. What would happen if more Christians took this to heart and celebrated it in church or at work. I know one thing, Pastors would be doing less counselling.

If each of us made someone else’s life better there would defi nitely be a greater EXPLOSION of Joy and we would see more people coming into the Kingdom.

Have an amazing Joy fi lled week through an EXPLOSION OF JOY.

JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HANSYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Red bras, beads and lace adorned the dining room table in Judy Scanland’s house as ladies from the Sylvan Lake Sassy Sisters work to transform the bras into purses. These purses are known as ‘bra purses’.

The Sassy Sisters that make them are the former Red Hat Group, and include 30 women who are 50 years of age and older. These women are often seen wearing red and purple. Younger members can be seen wearing pink and mauve, said Sassy Sisters queen Ethel English.

The ladies were inspired to make bra purses as they saw a bra purse up for bidding at a Moose Hall dinner they attended. Scanland had bid on the purse and won it.

The ladies thought the bra was very cute and decided as a group to go ahead and try making bra purses for them-selves, said English.

“We will use them to go the Moose Hall dinners so we can look cool when we go there,” English said. “We thought we would donate a couple to the dinner to be raffled off too.”

To make these purses the ladies each took one bra and bonded the bottom wires of the bra cup together with glue guns, or sewed them together by hand.

After bonding the bra cups together at the bottom, the ladies let their creative minds run wild by decorating the outside of the bra cup with beads, lace, flowers and any-thing else they desired.

“It will basically hold your lipstick and a bit of change, and that’s about all,” English said. “Most of the ladies are looking for bigger bras and most of the purses will not be closed at the top. They will just be open at the top.”

Bra purse making is just one out of many fun activities the ladies do together.

English said the group travels within Central Alberta and will go to places such as the Sundre Museum, and a country bed and breakfast outside of Leduc.

Sylvan Lake Sassy Sisters ‘queen’ Ethel English glues the bottom cups of a bra together to make a bra purse during a Sassy Sisters gathering on Tuesday.

Sassy Sisters get creative“It’s a huge beautiful place,” English

said. “They open it up for people to come in once a year for tours and they have product for sale. They have two little stores — one that’s all Christmas stuff and one that’s got a number of red hat items which are really nice.”

As ‘queen’ of the group, English said she holds monthly meetings and maintains the membership list. At the meetings the group discusses what

events they want to go to and who will volunteer to run them.

“Once a month we go out for birth-day lunch and celebrate all the birth-days within that month,” English said. “We go to Red Deer once every two months for a hatters’ dinner, which is for all the people who belong to the Red Hat Group and other similar groups.”

English said being a part of the

group is a lot of fun. The ladies go on fun outings such as going to plays and performances, and going for coffee or tea.

“We just do it for fun and to have a few laughs,” English said. “Most of these women have worked long and hard and have put in time with volun-teering. A lot of us still volunteer, but this is just our group to have fun, be silly and let our hair down.”

Sylvan Lake town council on Monday approved a $2.95 million budget increase for the soon-to-be-built NexSource Centre.

A number of the recom-mendations accepted by coun-cil — including the reconfigu-ration of the kitchen/conces-sion area and the main lobby/reception area — were made to increase building function-ality, according to public works

Functionality, public safety considered in NexSource Centre budget increase

director Dave Brand.Others, such as the addition

of heated concrete pads out-side at the entrance to the building, were made with public safety in mind.

“They’ll melt the snow in the winter time so it becomes a dry entry, which is a really nice feature, and a big public safety feature too,” said Brand.

Combining two previously proposed ice plants into one will result in more efficiency and less equipment, he added. And substituting some of the

structural steel in the building will result in a $700,000 cost savings.

But saving money wasn’t the primary aim of the value engineering sessions from which the recommendations resulted, said Brand.

“What we’re going through with designing this building is not necessarily just strictly about cost cutting,” he said. “When you cost cut, you lose

functionality, and it’s really about making sure we deliver a community facility that the community is going to be able to use.”

The budget increase approved by council takes the total budget of the project to $33,550,000.

The scope of the facility will remain the same, and functional and programming space will be maintained.

“It would be significantly more cost to add those things in a few years down the road, so it was one of the aspects to build that space now so that it fits the community’s needs,” said Brand.

The budget increase, he added, would allow that to happen.

The value engineering ses-sions, held over three days at the beginning of April, were

a first for the town. And given their effectiveness, they’re not likely to be the last.

“It’s been a really valuable process for us, even just to verify that what you’re getting is good,” said Brand. “Every little bit that you can find that obviously increases the value is a bonus as well.”

Construction on the facil-ity is expected to begin with-in the next two weeks.

It would appear that Sylvan Lake is finally free of ice for another year.

Consensus among many Sylvan Lakers is that Monday, April 27 is the day the ice officially disap-peared, though minimal amounts were still visible around parts of the lake that morning.

If confirmed, the date arrives nearly three weeks before last year’s, when the

Sylvan Lake’s ice is gone, and is said to have disappeared officially on Monday. This picture, taken April 16, shows the ice beginning to recede. STUART FULLARTON

Lake now free of icelast of the lake’s ice was believed to have disap-peared on May 17.

Sylvan Lake News records indicate April 20 in 1941 as the earliest date in recent history on which the ice disappeared.

Records show 1920 as the latest, when ice was still present until May 30.

Recording the ice’s dis-appearance date has been something of a tradition for Sylvan Lake over the years. The Sylvan Lake News first reported it in 1936.

The 5th Annual Boob Tour Comedy Night included four comedians who entertained an adult audience at the Sylvan Lake Community Centre last Friday night.

The popular comedians included Andrew Albert and Dan Glasswick, who have appeared on Just for Laughs; Jordan Welwood from Laugh Out Loud on CBC; and Steve Mazan, a cancer survivor himself,

American Comedian Steve Mazan makes the audience laugh during his performance as part of the 5th Annual Boob Tour Comedy Night held at the Community Centre last Friday night. The event entertained an adult audience and raised about $4,000 for the Sylvan Lake Optimist Club. JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN

Comedy night raises $4,000 for Lakeview Optimist Club

who wrote for the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The original concept of the Boob Tour Comedy Night started with a group of events held to raise money for breast cancer, said club treasurer Tasha Young.

The comedy night is the main fundraiser for the Lakeview Optimist Club and brought in around $4,000, said Young.

“The mandate of our club is to deal with chil-dren,” Young said. “We wanted to gear any funds

we raised towards a chil-dren’s cancer campaign, so we created the Sylvan Lake Youth Cancer Fund. That's the main beneficiary of the event. Our goal is to use the funds for children in our area with cancer.”

The club has other ini-tiatives such as helping the Lego club, the Spray Park and the Christmas Bureau in anyway they can.

The club also assists the youth in the community in any other way they may need help.

Young describes the club as being “small but mighty”. The club currently has seven members, and when called upon, those members help the youth living within the commu-nity.

“We assist when asked,” Young said. “For example, the Flipside Youth Drop-In Centre needed new TVs, so we did a bottle drive with them.”

Young said the club’s members have been work-ing to publicize their name this year by attending sev-eral interagency meetings, as other agencies aren't aware of the club's exis-tence.

“When other agencies are looking for money, sometimes they won't even think to come and ask us,” Young said.

She said 'Bringing Out the Best in Kids' is the club's slogan, as they will do anything they can to help children in the com-munity.

“That could be sending kids to camp or sponsoring a hockey team. It's anything that we can do.”

Sylvan Lake residents will see a two-per cent tax increase after town coun-cil approved the town’s 2015 tax rate bylaw Monday.

Additional municipal tax dollars totalling $220,000 will be generated from the increase, which will see the residential tax rate rise to 8.413 from 8.248.

“A two-per cent resi-

Council approves 2015 tax ratesdential tax rate increase is a reflection of council’s commitment to balancing our need for growth, with costs associated with proj-ects like our multiplex redevelopment, and the need of our residents for affordability and access,” said Mayor Sean McIntyre.

The non-residential rate will stay the same as last year at 14.003 — part of a tax rate freeze imple-mented by council to help attract and retain business in town.

Property tax payments for 2015 are due July 31, with an exception made

for property owners who have monthly payment arrangements.

April 182:14 a.m. – RCMP on

patrol along 46th Street at 50th Avenue in Sylvan Lake observed a large fire in progress. A holiday trailer at Don’s Trailer Park was fully engulfed in flames. Fire crews were contacted and the blaze was quickly extinguished. There were no injuries and the fire for-tunately did not spread to any other property in the compound. An investiga-tion into the cause of the blaze is underway.

2:42 a.m. – Three males are facing multiple charges

Impaired driver seen going wrong direction in traffic circlein relation to a firearm complaint in Sylvan Lake. RCMP responded to a call from witnesses advising that a firearm was pointed at them by three males near the four way stop at 46th Street and 50th Avenue. The complainants advised that they encountered the sus-pects previously as they were driving down a back alley near Lakeshore Drive. The suspects attempted to access their vehicle and were told to leave at which time they entered another truck and drove off. The witnesses then encountered the suspects again a short time later which resulted in the firearms incident. Charged with various weap-ons offences; possession of property obtained by crime; and drug possession charg-es are three males, aged 19, 23, and 31 from Bentley and Sylvan Lake.

April 199:41 a.m. – RCMP were

conducting a patrol in the Eckville area when a suspi-

cious vehicle was noted to be parked sideways at an intersection. The driver was sitting in the vehicle with the engine running at which time a traffic stop was initi-ated for suspected impaired driving. A roadside screen-ing device was utilized and a 36–year-old Eckville male was issued a three day sus-pension. His vehicle was towed at the scene and impounded for three days.

7:16 p.m. – A 21-year-old Red Deer male is facing charges in relation to a theft at a liquor store in Sylvan Lake. Police were called to the Plaza Liquor Store on 50A Street after a staff member witnessed a male steal a bottle of liquor and proceed to walk around the parking lot with the bottle. The employee secured the store and waited for officers at which time the male was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and two counts of failing to comply with conditions of a recog-nizance.

April 208:16 a.m. – A witness

contacted RCMP in relation to an erratic driver on Highway 11A in Red Deer County. The complainant advised that a car was being driven all over the road westbound on Highway 11A and traveled in the wrong direction on the traf-fic circle heading south-bound on Highway 20 into Sylvan Lake. The vehicle was located by a Community Peace Officer in Sylvan Lake and stopped. RCMP arrested a 28-year-old Sylvan Lake male at the scene. He is charged with impaired driving; having a blood alcohol level over .08; failing to comply with a probation order; operating a motor vehicle without a licence; and transporting liquor within easy access of an occupant.

11:39 a.m. – A 25-year-old Red Deer female and a 30-year-old Ponoka male are facing charges in con-nection with a suspicious vehicle incident. A witness notified police that a male

and female in a van were towing a trailer without a plate in the vicinity of Range Road 284 and entered a field in the area. The vehicle was followed and the occupants were reported to have dropped the trailer off near Highway 592 at Range Road 20 in Red Deer County. The sus-pect van was located a short time later and the occu-pants arrested following an investigation. The pair is charged with possession of property obtained by crime and possession of break-in instruments. The female is also charged with operating a motor vehicle without a license and registration and the male is charged with two additional counts of failing to comply with con-ditions of an undertaking.

8:54 p.m. – RCMP attended a location in Eckville after a 911 call was received of a fight in prog-ress between two males. Witnesses reported that one male had been assault-ed and knocked uncon-scious to the ground. EMS

treated the male who did not sustain life-threatening injuries. The two males had been drinking when a phys-ical dispute ensued outside the Turbo Super Service gas station. The injured male, aged 57, did not wish to co-operate with police and did not want charges. A 53-year-old male from Condor was arrested a short time later for public intoxication. He was found to have an outstanding war-rant and was subsequently charged with two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

April 217:33 a.m. – A domestic

dispute on 47th Street in Sylvan Lake resulted in police attendance. A 39-year-old female advised that she was assaulted recently by her spouse at the residence as well as on previous occasions. An investigation resulted in a 40-year-old male being charged with three counts of assault with a weapon, assault, and mischief under $5,000.

SPORTSSPORTSBaton twirling

sessions underway in Sylvan Lake

JASMINE O’HALLORAN-HANSYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A group of Sylvan Lake children are learning the basics of baton twirling in a set of eight-week sessions taught by Alberta Baton Twirling Association coach Chelsea Henning.

In these sessions, held in the gym at École Fox Run School, the children learn the basics of baton twirling such as moving the baton around their neck and moving the baton in a figure eight pattern, Henning said.

Other important skills the children learn is how to bal-ance and twirl a baton, change direction and pattern, and hand-eye co-ordination.

To help the children learn these skills, Henning incorpo-rates games into her sessions.

“For the figure eight the children twirl their wrist and we call it the ice cream scoop,” Henning said. “They have to scoop up on each side of their arm in a circular motion. It’s baby steps. It’s a lot of practicing, playing games and drilling.”

Henning also incorporates routine when teaching baton twirling because she said baton twirling is combined with dance and music.

“We do a routine that they really enjoy,” Henning said. “We just did an Adams family theme routine.”

Henning said that even as these sessions are just for recreation, her students are catching on really well to the basics of what baton twirling entails. She said she hopes to see them in her Heads Up Baton Twirling Club, which she will start in the fall.

“The little kids now are catching on very quickly because we’re setting a good base foundation,” Henning said.

Baton twirling may look difficult to a spectator but Henning said it is fairly easy as long as the baton twirler has a good understanding of patterns and motion.

“It’s really fun and it’s different, and if they really like dance or gymnastics and want to do something different, this would be for them,” Henning said.

Henning said spectators are allowed to come and observe what the children do during the sessions.

Molly Wilkins and Malika Drevenak learn the basics of baton twirling in a session taught by Alberta Baton Twirling Association coach Chelsea Henning last Wednesday.

Charges laid

against pair after

truck abandoned in

SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A Red Deer man and a youth were charged follow-ing a two vehicle-crash near Sylvan Lake last week.

Police arrived on the scene near the intersection of Highway 11 and Range Road 20 west of Sylvan Lake at around 9:30 a.m. last Thursday.

Before arriving, they were told that one of the vehicles involved, a Chevrolet truck, had already fled and crashed through a number of barbed wire fences into a neigh-bouring field.

Upon their arrival, police were further advised that the truck had been aban-doned by its occupants in a nearby field, and that its occupants had fled on foot.

Police were directed to an area where they located the truck’s two occupants and arrested them without further incident.

A police investigation revealed that the truck had been stolen in Leduc just two days earlier. Its licence plate was also found to have been stolen.

Police say the same truck evaded an Alberta Traffic

Sheriff about an hour before the crash after it was clocked going over 150 km/h. A pursuit wasn’t initiated due to public safety concerns.

An ATV recently stolen from a home in Eckville was sitting in the truck at that time, and was abandoned near Half Moon Bay before the crash on Highway 11. Police say it’s since been recovered.

A police service dog conducted a search of and around the crash scene, as well as the scene around the abandoned truck. A sawed-off firearm — also stolen — was discovered.

The three occupants of the Dodge Dart with which the truck collided were taken to Red Deer Hospital to be treated for minor inju-ries. They’ve all since been released.

Dixon Ross Bergseth, 37, of Red Deer, was charged with flight from police, dangerous driving, failing to remain at a collision scene involving bodily harm, possession of stolen property over $5,000, three counts of possession of sto-len property, unlawful pos-session of a firearm, unlaw-ful possession of a prohibit-ed firearm and unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm contrary to a weap-ons prohibition order.

A 17-year-old youth, who police say has ties to Red Deer and Sylvan Lake, was charged with posses-sion of stolen property over $5,000, three counts of pos-session of stolen property, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful posses-sion of a prohibited firearm, three counts of failing to comply with a youth proba-tion order and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).

Both were scheduled to make a court appearance in Red Deer on Monday.

Police are asking anyone who might have witnessed the crash or its related events to contact the Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment at 403-858-7200.

Police say a truck fled the scene of a crash that sent three people to hospital in Red Deer with minor injuries last Thursday. SYLVAN LAKE RCMP

22 SYLVAN LAKE NEWS THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 2015

SUBMITTEDSPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The following article and accom-panying pictures were submitted by the Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society as part of a series celebrating the society’s 20 years of existence this year. The Archives Society is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. at its new location in the lower level of the town’s Municipal Government Building.

One of the first home deliveries of milk was by John Kangas, who built his own delivery cart, milked his one cow, and sold milk to his neighbours for $0.10 a quart — Len Reynolds vowed the “milk was fresh, clean and sweet and half cream if you left it long enough”. The Kangas property at 48th Street and 47th Avenue was one of the

first houses built in that area, along with the Schaers, likely in the early 1940s. The house is still there, now owned by grandson, George Blair.

Jake and Ray Tucker ran a dairy business in the 1940s and part of the 1950s on the property where C.P. Blakely School is today. They were helped by Frank and Ellen Parry — it is Frank you see peek-ing out of the dairy wagon in the picture on this page (1941). Later on, when the Tuckers began rais-ing chickens and pigs, their “faith-ful helpers” were Norlan Amlee, Joe Mannix, the Kleeberger girls, and Carl and Hazel Selstrom. Dale Mannix has good memories of helping deliver the milk when he was quite young!

The Crocketts bought the Sylvan Lake Creamery from the Palmers in 1947 and ran it until it “ceased operations in 1976”. A logo

of a sailboat on wavy waters was chosen to be used as signage on bottle caps, butter wrappers and the delivery van. Gordon Hunter, one of the drivers, is shown in a 1957 photo on this page. Dale Mannix also drove for the Crocketts, as well as the Tuckers, and then became the milk distrib-utor in Sylvan Lake for Alpha Dairies.

During a visit to the school earlier this month, Edmonton children’s author Marty Chan used his own work and Lego to teach students the concepts of following a begin-ning, middle and end sequence.

These tangible exercises are examples of how Chan said he reinforces concepts into young minds. He said he remembers being a “very visual kid”, and said that when someone was speaking to him on concepts, it would all just go right over his head.

That, he said, is why he breaks down writing process into something more tan-gible for students.

“If you’re in Grade 2, you’re thinking, ‘I don’t quite understand the concepts of beginning, middle and end,’ but when I pull the Lego out and show how one piece is

boring, the second piece gives you a little more option and the third piece actually makes it fun, then they (understand). It’s something they can relate to.”

Chan is the author of 10 children’s books, and used his own work as an example so students could directly question the author on writing techniques.

“They see that what I am saying makes sense as they see that my book has been published,” Chan said. “I think having that authenticity with the kids helps them buy into the concept of writing more.”

Chan believes that writing is something anyone can do. That, he said, is the biggest message he wants students to take away from his workshops.

“When I go in and do a workshop, I try to make it as fun and interactive as possi-ble,” he said. “Often times I will hear those stories where a parent or a teacher will tell me about a kid who’s a reluctant writer who they couldn’t drag three sentences out of the kid, and after my workshop that same reluctant writer is writing half a page or two pages.”
