  • Principles of the KBSR Syllabus Design English is a compulsory subject in all primary and secondary schools in line with its status as a second language;The teaching of English is schools is to enable school- leavers to use English in the daily lives; Allows students to pursue higher education in the English-medium; Learners linguistic ability is in line with the NEP and Education Act to optimise their intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical potential;

  • English is also taught in ICT studies; English grammar is taught with its usage in speech and writing;The sound system is also taught to enable them to use internationally intelligible English;The syllabus outlines the aims, objectives and learning outcomes to be achieved;

    Learning outcomesSpecificationsExamples/ activities/ notesSkills and attitudes to be acquired by pupilsThe learning outcomes are break down into manageable skills and sub-skills for teaching and learningDirected at teachers and include explanations, teaching points and examples of activities to help students to achieve the skill specifications.

  • ItemExplanationLanguage skillsThe four basic skills are maintained. Vocabulary and sentence patterns are introduced and taught through the oral component and to be used in reading and writing. Grammar items are to be used in oral work and writing exercise.Learning outcomesThe use of specified contexts to make lesson meaningful. Topics chosen are based on immediate learning environment then expanded to town, country and foreign locations.The spoken languageSpecific sounds are taught. The aim is for clear speech and intelligibility.GrammarThe selection of grammar items and sentence patterns is aimed to help pupils to master English structures.Word listThe selection of word list is based on a sample of common words and high frequency words that are used and recycled.
