Syllable Towers were created to help kids

visually see the sounds in words.

Students will need a Syllable Tower game

board and a set o stacking/unifix cubes

for this activity.

Students will look at the pictures on the

game board, clap the sounds of each

picture, and then build a tower to match

the number of sounds they hear and place

it on top of the picture. For example, if

they are looking at the picture of a

rainbow, they will determine that the word

has two syllables and then build a tower

with two cubes to place on top of it.

This activity is great for a warm-up or even

an independent station.

20 Syllable Tower game boards are

included.

The Great Syllable Race is a game that can be played in

pairs or small groups. Students will need a game board to

share as well as different colored counters/manipulatives

to pay the game.

To prep, teachers will laminate and cut out the syllable

picture cards.

Place the syllable cards face down and scramble/mix.

Player one will select a card, clap the syllables, and then

move his/her game piece (counter/manipulative) the same

number of spaces on the game board. For example, if the

player pulls the elephant card, he will clap 3 syllables and

then move his game piece 3 spaces on the board. The

first player to reach the end, wins.

This is a great game for practicing and reinforcing

syllabication. It can be played in pairs, small groups,

and/or placed in independent learning centers.

1 Syllable Race game board and 200 syllable cards are

included in this resource.

Syllable Sorting is a great activity to

implement into your small group instruction.

You will need a set of the syllable cards and

a copy of the Syllable Sorting fingers.

Place the syllable sorting fingers in a pocket

chart or lay flat on the teacher table.

Distribute syllable picture cards to students

and prompt them to determine how many

syllables are in each word and sort

accordingly.

Teachers can also choose to hold the

syllable picture cards and show students the

pictures one at a time and work together to

determine the number of syllables in each

word and then sort accordingly.

6 syllable fingers and 200 syllable sorting

cards are included in this resource.
