CHRIST OUR REST:

THE DOUBTS AND FEARS OF BELIEVERS PRACTICALLY CONSIDERED David

Pitcairn Price: $20.00

Product Description

Although sanctified by the Spirit of Christ, Christians must

continually battle against indwelling sin. It is no surprise that as the

Christian life is chiefly characterized by faith and repentance, the Christian‘s

struggles are largely with manifestations of doubt and fear. Unfortunately, these

enemies of Christianity have wounded the character and weakened the comfort of

many children of God. In Christ Our Rest, David Pitcairn exposes the sad

prevalence and the destructive influence of doubts among Christians, and traces

them to their various causes.

He writes each of his sixteen chapters as letters addressed to a dear friend,

mixing scriptural exposition with tender encouragement and exhortation. He

presents the gospel, both in its doctrines and in its privileges, so that the faith of

the doubtful may find strength and believers may have their attention continually

directed to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Pitcairn masterfully highlights the

fullness and freeness of Christ‘s work as the only source of a satisfying rest for

the soul.

Author David Pitcairn (d. 1870) served as minister of Evie and Rendall, in the

Orkney Islands, Scotland.

CONTAGIOUS CHRISTIAN LIVING Joel Beeke

Price: $6.50

Product Description

When some people smile, they ignite smiles in people around them.

They have contagious smiles. If that‘s what a contagious smile is, what

is contagious Christian living? It is living that is so godly and so

consistent that people around them cannot help but be impacted and inspired. In

Contagious Christian Living, Joel R. Beeke looks at four people in the Bible to find

out how people today can live an influential life in dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Here is your invitation to read about, and pray for, the sacrificial submission of

Jephthah‘s daughter, the Christ-centeredness of Bartimaeus, the contagious

blessings of Jacob, and the consistent integrity of Daniel.

Author Joel R. Beeke is president of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, a

minister of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids,

Michigan, as well as an international conference speaker and author of numerous

books.

grace, the marks of strong Christians, strong temptations and strong grace, the

comforts of grace, and applications.

Author Christopher Love was born in Cardiff, Wales. He attended New Inn Hall,

Oxford, and graduated in 1635. A staunch Presbyterian, Love had difficulty gaining

ordination in the Church of England. He was offered ordination in Scotland if he

would pastor a church there, but he was desirous of ministering in England. He did

receive the ordination in England he so desired. Before he assumed the pastorate

of St. Lawrence Jewry in London, Love catechized and taught theology to the

children of the sheriff of London, and it was while living in that home that he met

his wife, Mary Stone. They had five children, two girls who died early in life, and

three boys, the last one was born a week after Love's death. Christopher Love was

arrested by Cromwell's forces for his alleged involvement in a plan to raise money

for the restoration of the monarchy, a charge Love denied. He was tried and

convicted on charges of treason. Though several other prominent London ministers

were also arrested, including Thomas Watson, they were all released. Christopher

Love was beheaded on Tower Hill, London, on August 22, 1651

HEAVEN OPENED; THE CORRESPONDENCE OF MARY WINSLOW Octavius

Winslow Price: $20.00

Product Description

"I would caution you from my own experience, never to sit down and

reason what you should do in this or that perplexity, but go at once to

the Lord with it, distrusting your own heart- which is deceitful above all things-but

trusting Him, which you may safely do." ~ Mary Winslow

Author Mary Winslow (b. 1774) married Thomas Winslow and bore him ten children.

Widowed at forty, newly immigrated to the United States, and responsible for nine

children, she experienced much affliction and sorrow. Out of these trials her faith

came forth as gold and her deep communion with Christ continues to be a help and

comfort to many.

HUMILITY: THE FORGOTTEN VIRTUE Wayne A Mack

Price: $12.00

Product Description

Publisher's Description: Wayne Mack defines pride and humility

biblically. He shows us in a multitude of ways that God hates pride

(Prov. 6:16-17). He hates the proud with His heart, curses them with

9

His mouth, and punishes them with His hand (Ps. 119:21; Isa. 2:12; 23:29). Pride was

God‘s first enemy. It was the first sin in Paradise and is the last we will shed in

death. ―Pride is the shirt of the soul, put on first and put off last,‖ wrote George

Swinnock. Mack shows us that pride is a unique sin. Most sins turn us away from

God, but pride is a direct attack upon God. It lifts our hearts above Him and

against Him. Pride seeks to dethrone God and enthrone itself. How sorely this book

is needed in a day when scores of people are drowning in their own forms of

unbiblical self-esteem.

MOSES‘ SELF DENIAL Jeremiah Burroughs Price:

$16.00

Product Description

Reflecting on Hebrews 11:24–25, Jeremiah Burroughs ponders how

Moses relinquished his noble and comfortable rights as the son of

Pharaoh‘s daughter to find greater honour as a suffering son of Abraham.

Burroughs explains how Christians are called to deny all honours, privileges, and

delights for the sake of Christ. He also shows how God is especially honoured when

we forgo selfish desires at a time when they seem most advantageous to us. You

will benefit greatly to see how faith acts to transform losses caused by self-denial

into true honour. This is an insightful, practical book—a helpful antidote for our

natural selfishness

Progress with experimental and practical notes by William Mason well-

he may flee from himself and the wrath he feels in himself, to the fullness of the

grace of Christ, signified by the Wicket- Gate. Author John Bunyan (1628-1688)

was born the son of a metalworker near Bedford, England. He went on to become a

famous preacher and writer and during his life penned over 2 million words, his

most famous work being ‗The Pilgrim‘s Progress‘.

PRACTICAL GODLINESS: THE ORNAMENT OF ALL RELIGION Vincent Alsop

Price: $18.00

Product Description

Faith with works is such an ornament and testimony to the legitimacy

and validity of true faith that, according to the Apostle Paul, it

―adorns the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things‖ (Titus 2:10).

Alsop expounds this text encouraging believers to live according to the precepts

and promises of the gospel. In addition to providing numerous directions on how to

practice godliness each day by living according to the promises of the gospel and

the precepts of the law, Alsop buttresses his argument for the advance of

personal godliness by stressing the sanctification of the Sabbath and the

sanctification of family religion.

SOLOMON‘S TEMPLE SPIRITUALIZED John Bunyan

Price: $7.75

Product Description

Publisher's Description: Bunyan states to his readers: I have

adventured to do my endeavor to shew thee something of the gospel

glory of Solomon's temple; that is, of what it, with its utensils, was a

to us their children: the which, that I might do the more distinctly, I

have handled particulars one by one, to the number of threescore and ten; namely,

all that of them I could call to mind; because, as I believe, there was not one of

them but had it signification, and so something profitable for us to know. Author

John Bunyan (1628-1688) was born the son of a metalworker near Bedford,

England. He went on to become a famous preacher and writer and during his life

penned over 2 million words, his most famous work being ‗The Pilgrim‘s Progress‘.

STRIVING AGAINST SATAN Joel Beeke

Price: $9.00

Product Description

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring

lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast

in the faith (1 Peter 5:8-9). If you are a true believer, Satan hates you because you

bear the image of Christ and because you were snatched from his power. You

deserted Satan and he wants you back. He wants to sift you like wheat. While we

should not overestimate Satan‘s power, to our peril we underestimate an enemy

who is living, intelligent, resourceful, and cunning.

Every Christian is in a battle, which is fierce, spiritual and necessary. It is a battle

between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ. We

need to know the enemy—his personality, his strategies, his weaknesses, his defeat

on Calvary, and his final judgment. In a day when society has, in many ways, placed

itself under Satan‘s rule, when Satanism is flourishing in Western nations, when

certain branches of the church are preoccupied with ‗deliverance ministries‘, while

others deny the devil‘s existence, Dr. Beeke‘s book is a sober, practical perspective

on this vital subject. He states, ―We must know our enemy . . . we must know how to

withstand him and what spiritual weapons to take up against him. We must defeat

him by faith, through lives that bear fruit and spread the truth.‖

THE ALMOST CHRISTIAN DISCOVERED Matthew Mead

Price: $13.50

Product Description

While ―cheap grace‖ and ―easy-believism‖ are relatively new terms,

antinomianism is not. Martin Luther coined the phrase to refer to

those who wanted all the benefits of salvation without any of the obligations. To

those who looked to some external act for confirmation of a regenerate heart, the

Puritans pointed to proper motives as well as proper conduct. To those who looked

merely to their orthodox beliefs, the Puritans pointed out that the demons are

orthodox in their creeds, but not in their conduct. Ever mindful not to stir up

unnecessary doubts in weak believers, the Puritans, nevertheless, felt it imperative

to awaken the carnal hypocrite out of his undeserved security.

THE CHRISTIAN‘S LABOUR AND REWARD William Gurnall

Price: $16.00

Product Description

Scripture speaks much of the rewards for being a faithful servant of

God. In this work, Gurnall speaks of the great rewards God will give

His people in heaven and the relative few things He asks of us in return.

Author William Gurnall (1616-1679) is best known for his classic work on spiritual

warfare titled, The Christian in Complete Armour, published by the Banner of

Truth Trust. He pastored in the little town of Lavenham, in the county of Suffolk.

Gurnall was one of those ministers who decided to conform to the dictates of the

Church of England, and was therefore not ejected from his pulpit, as were over

2000 non-conformists. William Gurnall was born in 1616. He was educated at

Emmanual College, Cambridge, famous for its Puritan leanings. He died in 1679.

THE CHRISTOLOGY OF JOHN OWEN Richard Daniels

Price: $ 30.00

Product Description

The Puritans are often accused of being weak on Christology. In this

revision of his doctoral dissertation for Westminster Theological

Seminary, Richard Daniels shows how wrong that assessment is. He plumbs the

depths of John Owen‘s views on Christ, covering His person, natures, offices, and

states. Dr. Daniels also relates how Owen taught that believers can have personal

communion with Christ. This is a masterful work that will be deeply appreciated by

readers who love both the Puritans and their theology. ~ Joel R. Beeke, Puritan

Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

THE FULLNESS OF CHRIST UNFOLDED IN THE HISTORY OF JOSEPH Octavius

Winslow Price: $12.00

Product Description

―Our Jesus, the Elder Brother, centres in Himself infinitely more than

all the tender love and sympathy found in His whole Church. It was

necessary that by every possible human sensibility He should be qualified to be the

gracious, sympathizing Head of a suffering body; and no truth is brought out in the

history of Joseph more luminously, or exquisitely touching and beautiful, as

Author Octavius Winslow (1808-1878) was born in London, England, and raised in

THE HAPPINESS OF HEAVEN Maurice Roberts

Price: $7.50

Product Description

While belief in heaven is essential to the Christian faith, the fact that

pilgrim believers have not yet experienced heaven leaves us with many

questions about what it will be like. In The Happiness of Heaven,

Maurice Roberts surveys Holy Scripture to tell us what heaven is all about. In his

characteristic style, Roberts discusses the biblical data clearly and relevantly,

making soul-searching application at every turn. This is not just a book of

interesting facts about what heaven is like; it is an appeal to men and women to

find their happiness in the eternal comfort of God in Christ.

THE MARVELLOUS RICHES OF SAVOURING CHRIST Ruth Bryan

Price: $18.75

Product Description

Ruth Bryan's letters are remarkably like Samuel Rutherford's,

closely resembling them in most winning, unwearied, and gloriously

endless eulogy of the King in His beauty. They are admirably fitted to

allure believers into a nearer fellowship with the Lord Jesus. Many who are already

standing within holy ground, but only in the Court of the Gentiles, may be drawn by

them to desire a place in the inner sanctuary of Israel, of the peculiar people, of

the kingdom of priests; for they are calculated in no ordinary manner to humble, to

elevate, to refresh and enliven the reader.

There are few Ruth Bryans in these days, the Church greatly needs more; and we

are therefore thankful to God that she 'being dead yet speaketh.'

THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS Thomas Shephard

Price: $26.00

Product Description

Originally published in 1659, this book calls attention to true

assurance of salvation. Shepard warns against anti-nomianism as he

carefully distinguishes believers from non-believers. Following

Matthew 25:1–13, the first part of this work details the visible church‘s

preparation to meet Christ at His return, while the second half explains His coming

to meet her.

Author Thomas Shepard was a person of great learning, a hard student, and

admirable preacher, and an excellent writer. Educated at Emmanuel College,

Cambridge, at the age of fifteen, he became lecturer at Earls Colne in Essex until

he was silenced for non-conformity. He fled to Boston where he was pastor of the

church at Cambridge and is credited for having stopped the progress of the

antinomian heresy from breaking out in the new colony. Shepard was also involved

in the founding of Harvard University and was instrumental in having it placed in

Cambridge.

THE SHORTER CATECHISM EXPLAINED FROM SCRIPTURE Thomas Vincent

Price: $9.75

Product Description

Publisher's Description: In the opinion of B.B. Warfield, the

Westminster divines left to posterity not only 'the most thoroughly

thought out statement ever penned of the elements of evangelical

religion' but also one which breathes 'the finest fragrance of spiritual

religion'. Their most influential work, "The Shorter Catechism", was intended as a

teaching basis for an introduction to the Christian Faith. No London pastor made

more effective use of it than Thomas Vincent (1634-1678) and when his

'explanation' was first published in 1674, John Owen, Thomas Watson along with

38 other signatories to the Preface, declared their belief that it would 'be greatly

useful to all Christians in general'.

THOUGHTS ON RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE Archibald Alexander

Price: $19.95

Product Description

The nature of spiritual experience is probably both the most

interesting and the most difficult subject in Christian literature:

interesting because it concerns human life in all observable stages

from childhood to death, and embraces all the emotions and behaviour possible in a

man regenerated by the Holy Spirit: difficult because the adequate treatment of

Page 19: Sydney FP Church Online Bookroom BIBLE HISTORYstorage.cloversites.com... · Sydney FP Church Online Bookroom BIBLE HISTORY BIBLE HISTORY OLD TESTAMENT. Alfred Edersheim Price: $22.50

19

the subject makes immense demands upon the author. To trace sanctification and

backsliding, as they appear in human consciousness, presupposes a sound biblical

theology as well as a spirituality of mind and a pastoral knowledge broad enough to

interpret all the varieties in type which occur. Archibald Alexander brought to this

volume the best wisdom of his life. From his own observations, and from case

histories drawn from Christian biography, he follows his subject with the hand of a

master. He was, in Dr. Theodore Woolsey's words, ' The Shakespeare of the

Christian heart'. Primarily concerned with what ought to be the impression made

upon the life by scriptural truths he has nothing of the vague devotionalism of the

religious mystics. But within this biblical context a wide variety of experiences

passes under review, along with a consideration of the practical problems involved

in an understanding of the new-birth, Christian growth, spiritual conflict and

kindred subjects.

FEARLESS PILGRIM: LIFE AND TIMES OF JOHN BUNYAN Faith Cook

Price: $30.00

Product Description

Publisher's Description: John Bunyan is well known as the author of

The Pilgrim's Progress, the seventeenth-century spiritual classic which

has been the second best-selling book in the world after the Bible. He

was also a much-loved preacher and pastor whom crowds flocked to

hear after his release from prison. One contemporary wrote that he 'could weep

for joy most part of his sermons‘. But how did Bunyan become such a preacher and

writer? In this book you will discover the path which prepared him to be greatly

used as a pastor to his own generation and a guide to Christ's pilgrim people still.

‗In this new and well-written biography Faith Cook relates John Bunyan to the

turbulent times through which he lived, surviving two periods of imprisonment in

Bedford prison, sustained by his faith, determined, as he himself wrote ‗to live

upon God that is invisible‘. Faith Cook avoids the temptation of merely regarding

Bunyan as one of the great figures of English literature. That he certainly is, but

he is so much more – a physician of souls, much-loved pastor and powerful preacher

of the gospel of grace. The authoress skilfully relates her subject to the political

history of his times, in which nonconformists won a greater measure of freedom to

worship according to their understanding of the Bible during the Cromwellian

period, only to be restricted again after the Restoration of the monarchy in

1660.Bunyan emerges from this book as a writer of plain yet remarkably

imaginative prose, steeped in an amazing knowledge of the English Bible. That

knowledge is not just textual: it is deeply experimental, the fruit of much

meditation, as The Pilgrim‘s Progress particularly shows.

FOR THE LOVE OF INDIA: THE STORY OF HENRY MARTYN Jim Cromarty

Price: $18.75

Product Description

Publisher's Description: In the summer of 1805, at the height of the

struggle for naval supremacy between Britain and France that was to

culminate in the Battle of Trafalgar, a young man, newly ordained to

the ministry of the Church of England and already showing symptoms

of the tuberculosis which had claimed the life of his mother, set sail on the long

and hazardous voyage to India. Leaving behind friends, family and the woman he

loved, he turned his back on the prospects of a brilliant academic career in

England, in order to bring the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Word of

God in their own language to the peoples of India and Persia. His name was Henry

Martyn. Struggling against the rigours of a climate which was seriously undermining

his health, and facing scorn and hostility from many quarters, within the space of a

few short years he completed the translation of the New Testament into

Hindustani, Persian and Arabic, opened several schools and brought the message of

the gospel, by either the spoken or the written word, to people from all levels of

society, from the beggars who came to his gate to the court of the Shah of Persia.

Author Jim Cromarty is a retired minister of the Presbyterian Church of Eastern

Australia. He also taught for twenty-seven years in a number of primary schools in

Australia, before becoming principal of a large primary school. He is the author of

several books published by Evangelical Press, including King of the Cannibals — The

story of John G. Paton, A Mighty Fortress is our God — The story of Martin

Luther and The Pigtail and Chopsticks Man — The story of J. Hudson Taylor and

the China Inland Mission. Endorsements "A gifted biographer makes all the

difference to the presentation of the life of a Christian leader or missionary. Jim

Cromarty‘s skill in depicting other missionaries has been well demonstrated in his

earlier biographies. Those same skills are displayed in this present volume on one of

the pioneer missionaries in the Middle East. The story of Martyn‘s life has its

highs and its lows, its joys and its sorrows, but Jim Cromarty is able to balance the

varied aspects of his life in a gripping presentation. As a missionary account this is

excellent, and I commend it wholeheartedly.'" - Allan M. Harman, former principal

of the Presbyterian Theological College, Melbourne, Australia and editor of

Reformed Theological Review

KILLING FIELDS LIVING FIELDS: FAITH IN CAMBODIA Don Cormack Price: $16.00

Product Description

Publisher's Description: The Cambodian Church was first planted

among the rice farmers of North-West Cambodia in the mid-1920s.

Growth was slow and painful. Then fifty years of nearly fruitless toil

culminated in the incredible decade of the 1970s, when joyous spiritual

awakening was juxtaposed with indescribable devastation. Communist rule forced

the massively depleted Church underground in Cambodia, drove it across into

Thailand's crowded refugee camps, and scattered it across six continents. At that

time almost all the mature leadership perished under the Khmer Rouge. The Church

is free and the time is now ripe for growth and development. In this edition you

discover some of the recent developments in Cambodian story but yet it still

remains the unfinished portrait of the Cambodian Church. This book will

strengthen you in your faith and make you ask "what can I do for God"? This book

includes a timeline of History of Cambodia from 300bc right up to 2009. Author

Don Cormack spent over 20 years among the Cambodian people and therefore is

well able to give the background of Cambodian Life and culture. Endorsements‖

their sins unless someone shares the good news of Jesus Christ with

them. However, just like a seed planted in good soil brings forth a

beautiful garden, God uses the gospel message to produce Christians fit for

bearing spiritual fruit. In Sowing the Seed, children will read stories about people

sharing the gospel with others. These stories about missions and evangelism

reinforce the importance of sharing the gospel and encourage children to see the

joy of telling others about Jesus.

TAKING ROOT Diana Kleyn Price:

$6.00

Product Description

The picture of a plant taking root is used in the Bible to teach us the

idea of conversion. When someone‘s heart is turned from himself and

his sinful ways to faith in Jesus and devotion to God, it is like a plant

which starts to shoot out roots into rich soil so that it can live and

take nourishment. There is no way for a plant to have life unless it

takes root, and there is no way for a person to have spiritual life unless God turns

him or her out of the way of death and into the way of life. The stories in this book

have to do with plants taking root. But as you read through them, you will not run

across tales of flowers, leaves, and dirt as much as you will about spiritual plants in

the garden of the Lord. They are stories about how God gives people new spiritual

life by rooting their hearts in the grace of His Son Jesus Christ. Read these

stories and take the time to ask God about causing your heart to take deep root

into the life-giving soil of Jesus. The Lord‘s Garden is a series of devotional stories

for children. The stories are based on true happenings, gleaned from a variety of

sources, and rewritten for contemporary readers. Each story accompanies a

passage of Scripture, and is intended to illustrate that particular biblical truth.

Some stories are shorter, some longer. However, all will capture the attention of

children, and hopefully their hearts.

Author Diana Kleyn is a member of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed

Congregation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is the mother of three children, and

Word. She writes monthly for the children's section in The Banner of Sovereign

Grace Truth magazine, and is co-author of another series of stories titled Building

BEARING FRUIT Diana Kleyn Price:

$6.00

Product Description

Just like trees and plants bear fruit, so must the Christian bear

spiritual fruit. Some plants and trees are meant to have only branches

or stems, and leaves, and no fruit. But there are others that produce

fruit: apple trees, tomato plants, blueberry bushes, etc. Through the

work of the Holy Spirit in a believer's heart, Christians begin to produce the fruit

of the Spirit. This means that a Christian shows by his lifestyle that he walks in

the ways of the Lord. As you can tell an apple tree becase of the tasty apples it

carries on its branches, Christians should be recognized by their godly character.

Children, read these stories and see the importance of bearing the fruit of

godliness.
