This year marks the 20th anniversary of City of Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival – an event that has grown to become one of the largest, most vibrant and exciting celebrations outside of China.

From its modest beginnings as a community street market, our Lunar New Year festivities are now one of the largest outside Asia. Embracing performance, art, fabulous food, dragon boat racing and much more, our celebrations have a distinct Sydney style, and have retained the strong community involvement that makes our festival so special.

This year, we are creating an illuminated path across our city, with our most iconic and beautiful locations lit up by giant lanterns representing the 12 signs of the lunar zodiac. Featuring the work of some of our most exciting artists, these lanterns bring a contemporary flavour to the traditional. They also give us the perfect opportunity to follow the trail across our city, as we take part in festivities that embrace the cultures of the many countries that observe the lunar calendar.

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of our sister city relationship with Guangzhou, and we are delighted to welcome a delegation who will be taking part in our festivities.

I look forward to celebrating the Year of the Monkey together. Kung Hei Fat Choy!

FESTIVAL CURATOR

This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sydney Chinese New Year Festival and while we reflect on the history of this wonderful community celebration, we’re also delighted to present the exciting new Lunar Lanterns event, along with festival favourites including the famous Dragon Boat Races and Lunar Feasts.

2016 is the Year of the Monkey and this year’s festival encapsulates the playful spirit of the Monkey. There are so many different activities taking place around the city – from the glittering Lunar Lanterns, to high energy street performers and traditional dancers; lion dances, visual arts and tempting, delicious banquets. The festival is a joyous salute to all of the cultures that celebrate the Lunar New Year and is a showcase for the remarkable talent of the local community.

And like the busy, clever monkey exploring all of the festival activities, visitors will enjoy getting together with family and friends, and joining in this vibrant, perpetually moving celebration. Get caught up in its energy and enthusiasm as we celebrate the Lunar New Year in true Sydney style.

The year 2016 is of special significance to Guangzhou and Sydney. Since the establishment of the Sister City relationship in 1986, the two cities have gone through thick and thin together for 30 years, cultivating a deep and sincere friendship along the way.

Guangzhou, the southern gateway to China, is also called “the city of goats”. In an ancient legend, five deities from heaven turned into five goats and descended to Guangzhou with ears of grain in their mouths, bringing the seeds of eternal harvest and hope to the local people. We take great delight therefore, in making a set of goat lanterns for the participation of the zodiac lantern display in this year’s Sydney Chinese New Year Celebration. It is our sincere wish that through these five lovely goats, we can continue to pass on love and friendship to the people of Sydney, and bring joy and happiness to everyone in this most important festival for the Chinese people. Built on our joint achievements in the past, we are looking forward to continuing candid cooperation, and evermore solid friendship between Guangzhou and Sydney!

We wish a very happy Spring Festival to the people of Sydney!

MAYOR OF GUANGZHOU

Mr. CHEN JianhuaMayorofGuangzhou

The team at Cure Brain Cancer Foundation went bananas when we heard we’d been chosen as the charity partner for the Chinese New Year Festival in the Year of the Monkey!

Monkeys are clever, as is brain cancer. Brain cancer kills more children in Australia than any other disease and more people under 40 than any other cancer, so we’re thinking differently and disruptively to outsmart it.

There has been an explosion of understanding about the disease in recent years, thanks to research. Cure Brain Cancer is now bringing world-class clinical trials to Australia to get new treatments to patients faster. These need funding.

Join Cure Brain Cancer this Chinese New Year; this is the moment to help change fortunes for people with brain cancer.

Pro. Charlie Teo AMFounder, Cure Brain Cancer

People born in the Year of the Monkey are fun-loving, energetic and inquisitive. Their intellect allows them to adapt to any situation, and they are confident, charismatic, loyal and inventive. Sometimes the Monkey can be a little too curious for his or her own good, as well as careless, restless, immature and arrogant.

2016 is the year of the Red Fire Monkey, the most forceful of all the Monkeys.

This year’s festival artwork was created by the Sydney-based studio, Leuver Design.

Lovingly known to us as ‘Modular Monkey’ (or ‘Mod’ for short), the design is almost entirely crafted from intersecting circles and segments pieced together to celebrate a moving, playful hero that swings through our city.

With bold colouration and myriad moves, Mod is out to reflect the jovial and charismatic traits of those born in the year of the Monkey.

The circles were unavoidable. Our moon is a circle, as is our summer sun, not to mention the famous circular arcs of Sydney’s most iconic structures. Circles unite, and Mod is out to celebrate CNY16 with everyone!

Leuver Design are honoured to have worked with the City and present a campaign that we hope is simple and striking, with just a little bit of monkey business.

FESTIVAL ARTWORK

THE MONKEYSydney Opera House

Cheeky, fun loving, inquisitive and wise, the Monkey is also charismatic, loyal and charming.

Sydney is giving a very special welcome to the Year of the Monkey, with the Sydney Opera House providing a spectacular backdrop to our Monkey lantern.

Artist Laurens Tans’ lantern continues his playful exploration of Chinese linguistics, technology and the culture of fabrication. These three wise monkeys, who see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil, are perched on top of a pencil with the Chinese characters for ‘Sydney’.

Laurens Tan is an Australian sculptor and multidisciplinary artist. Born in Holland, Laurens came to Australia in 1962, where he still resides. He is currently Adjunct Professor at Tianjin Academy of Fine Art and at La Trobe University, and has exhibited extensively in group and solo shows, both nationally and internationally.

THE DRAGON Dawes Point

The Dragon is a creature of myth and legend, a symbol of good fortune and a sign of intense power.

The Dragon, one of the most iconic symbols of Chinese culture, welcomes visitors to Sydney’s historic gateway, Circular Quay.

Against the magnificent backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, artist Fan Dongwang has created a Dragon representing China’s emerging cultural identity. His contemporary interpretation of this mythical creature crops the body and uses traditional Chinese three dimensional carving techniques with the colours of Western pop art.

Fan Dongwang was an established Shanghai artist before moving to Australia in 1990. His recent works combine traditional Chinese carving techniques with acrylic canvas to create a unique visual language, ‘sculptural painting’. His work has been widely exhibited in Australia and features in many private and public collections in both China and Australia.

THE RABBITCustoms House Square

Rabbits are friendly, outgoing and prefer the company of others. They also have exquisite taste in both dress and the arts.

Customs House Square is home to a surprising scene, with 14 playful rabbits in elegant silk waistcoats practicing Tai Chi.

Chinese New Year Festival Curator Claudia Chan Shaw shows us the rabbit in all its elegance and sophistication as it enjoys a Sydney summer with family and friends. Try out rabbit Tai Chi poses, or just wander among these whimsical creatures and admire their finery.

Claudia Chan Shaw is perhaps most recognisable as the co-host of ABC TV’s Collectors. She is an author and fashion designer for the Vivian Chan Shaw label. Her career spans art and design, photography, curating, broadcasting, collecting and lecturing. Her work has been exhibited in Australia and is held in private collections.

THE OXMartin Place

The Ox is known for its diligence, dependability, strength and determination.

Sydney’s bustling Martin Place is home to a magical celestial ox, comprising hundreds of illuminated Mahjong tiles. Commonly played during festive seasons, the use of these tiles gives a playfulness and joy to this sturdy zodiac animal.

The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu said that riding a blue ox embodies one’s return to nature. At night, as the lantern glows with an electric blue hue in the dark sky, this magical creature creates a link between heaven and earth.

Tianli Zu was born in Beijing and now lives in Sydney. She has exhibited extensively in Australia and China and her work captures experiences of places and cultures through intuitive and metaphysical means.

THE HORSE Martin Place

The Horse is animated, active and energetic. They love to be in a crowd and to take centre-stage.

Recalling the might of China’s ancient armies, the Horse lantern depicts ancient war horses leading a chariot.

Taking his inspiration from the chariots found with the famous Terracotta Warriors, artist Justin Qian re-imagines them for a modern, Sydney audience.

Jiahua (Justin) Qian was born in Nanjing and now lives and works in Sydney. He is one of a small number of stone carvers working in Australia today. His smooth hieratic forms speak an international language of sculpture that stretches from the Greek kouroi to Brancusi.

THE GOAT 羊Chinatown 華埠

Wise, dependable, and calm, the Goat is also creative and compassionate and fond of the quiet life.

Sydney’s Chinatown is home to the Goat lantern. This magnificent lantern has been brought from Guangzhou, our sister city in Southern China.

In 1986, Sydney signed a sister city agreement with Guangzhou, a city in the trade-focused southern region of China. The Chinese Gardens in Sydney’s Darling Harbour are a gift to the people of Sydney from Guangzhou authorities.

To celebrate this significant 30 year anniversary, The People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality will mark the occasion with a cultural exchange program that continues to strengthen this close sister-city relationship.

TWENTY TWENTY

Twenty Twenty is inspired by the 20th anniversary of the Sydney Chinese New Year Festival in 2016, and the piercing nature of 20/20 vision.

When a person has 20/20 vision, they see clearly. Twenty Asian-Australian artists have cultivated works sharpened by their unique vision. In a cultural fusion of Asian upbringing and Western influence, each artwork will represent something that is clear and true to the artist.

A memorable experience, a dream for the future, a burning passion. It is a depiction of this moment of clarity.

Join an exclusive artwork viewing and floor talk with Yin Cao, the Curator of the Chinese Gallery during the Year of the Monkey. Traditionally, painting landscapes was a way for artists to express their philosophy of humanity’s place in nature. The five masters represented in the Ryckmans’ collection are fine examples of such a long tradition.
