The Cave Clan Sydney drain location list. As updated 27 Dec 1996.-------------------------------------------------------------------This list is a location finder for the drains in sydney which Cave Clan operatives have discovered in Sydney during the last 7 years. It is byno means exhaustive but serves as a useful ready reckoner for the drain explorer from another city who needs to do a few choice drains. Interpretation: HT means height, measured in feet. Feature is the particulargood thing about the drain which made it appear on the list. Some features are recommended for the visitor and these are marked with an exclamation (!).Wetness: No means u will stay dry, ANKL and KNEE are standard water depths,and boat means use a dinghy.The locations are only approximate. Generally one just heads to the low pointin the local topography or follows a canal upstream until a tunnel appears. Amap, such as the 25th (or later) UBD ar a Sydway's are useful so we have included a few coordinates (UBD25 and SYDWAY cols respectively).DIFF stands for difficulties which you may encounter. P/S is passing a structure, TDL means the entrance is tidal, L/S warns of low sections and VIS means that being spotted is best avoided and/or the drain entrance is not obvious. F/E designates the drain entrance as somewhat hard to spot. PRECAUTIONS. ============Drain exploration, or urban speleology as it is also known, has certain risks implicit in its makeup. The first of these is water... lots of it moving veryfast as a result of rain. Avoid this by doing drains on sunny days. Another is the darkness, so take multiple torches in case one or two go wrong in thedrain. There are risks associated with illegal trade waste dumping, so if you smell anything offensive, or the water starts looking strange (fizzing, milky,coloured or luminescent) then leave. Methane, an organic decomposition product from rubbish in drains, tends to flow on the ceiling so naturally no naked flames. And always travel in numbers and tell someone where you are going soif anything goes wrong there is likely to be help. Drains are slippery and it is easy to fall over. We also stress that you keep out of sewers and telecom tunnels; the operators of these systems are understandably anti-exploration.BTW, drain exploring is usually illegal or in breach of such laws as trespass,confined spaces legislation or maritime speed limits (We Kid Thee Not). Sinceby exploring drains you do not do them any damage, and since these were oftenonce natural public river systems which anyone could explore until the Town Planners drowned them in cement and built a city on them and then madeit arbitrarily illegal to inspect them, not to mention that a law which cannotbe policed is no law at all... if follows that you should feel free to explore.After all... Leave everything as you find it (manhole covers, grilles, gates, safety bars, water monitoringequipment and the like) and be considerate to the fauna which live in drainssuch as eels, bats, cockies, turtles, birds, et cetera. Do not break any of stalactites, crystal growths, termite nest lobes or birdnests if you can helpit. Prowler and I have tried to pop the bastard, and I fractured by foot-operated manhole popper on it too.
