DCU Business School and SALIS Introduction

This document proposes the development of a Study Abroad programme in Business and Languages at

Postgraduate Level for visiting students from SWUFE in China to Dublin City University (DCU). The aim is for

students from SWUFE to study modules at Postgraduate level from Dublin City University Business School

(DCUBS). The proposed programme will run over a full academic year (or a single semester if preferred). It

is envisaged that credits earned may be transferred back to SWUFE on successful completion of the

programme. Overview of Proposal

The proposed programme will be designed to provide students with an opportunity to discover and learn

new and exciting skills in leadership and management that will enhance and strengthen their primary

qualification. By taking part in classes with other DCU students from Ireland and around the globe, students

will gain expertise in their field, whilst enjoying a unique intercultural experience, culturally and socially.

The programme will be built around DCU’s reputation with enterprise and innovation providing effective

solutions to the global business challenges of today and beyond. Students will be offered a range of core

Business modules at Postgraduate Level.

The programme will be designed for students who have already met both the academic requirement for

entry to the university and it is proposed that students will choose from a range of core classes/modules

from DCU’s School of Business over a year long period or, for a single semester if this is the preference. Entry Requirements: Year Long Options

period of their stay. 2: Academic Learning Classes will be taken alongside other DCU students who are taking part in regular full-time undergraduate degree programmes and will deal with both intercultural and linguistic issues in society today. 3: Integration Students staying in apartments will be housed with students from other nationalities as well as Irish

DCU Business School and SALIS Day’ which is organized by students and takes place in October every year. These clubs and societies range

from more ‘energetic’ activities (e.g. Irish dancing, sports etc.) to more mentally challenging activities, such

as debating societies. The School will also provide ‘buddy’ partners for, which will lead to cultural exchanges between Chinese

and Irish students and facilitate the transition to DCU life. A further feature introduced to aid integration is

complimentary access to the DCU Sports club. Housing With Apartment style accommodation on-campus accommodation or similar accommodation in very

nearby location, students will stay in apartments with 4 or 5 single rooms with individual bathrooms.

Students share a living/ kitchen/ dining area. Each bedroom has a study area and internet access (for a fee).

A telephone is provided in the living area. Meals can be cooked by the students themselves in the kitchen

area or bought in one of the many eateries on campus or nearby. DCU does not have a meal plan but

provides many options for students to choose from. (Host Family stay while in the two week DCU Language

School Programme). Facilitation Plan SWUFE students will be provided with a comprehensive Orientation Programme during the initial period at

DCU. This will clarify many questions regarding studying in a foreign environment and will deal with

practical issues. During the academic year, the International Office provides workshops for international

students which deal with issues such as culture shock, multicultural education etc. It also organizes

international events to which all DCU students are invited. The International Office will work closely with all coordinators from both schools (SALIS and Mechanical

Engineering), providing support where necessary. All SWUFE University students will have access to the

support services of DCU and the International Office, as with all DCU students. Immigration Visa applications can take some time to process, so it is always advisable for applications to be sent as soon

as possible so that students can secure a place early at the University, in order to avoid disappointment.

Unfortunately the University has no control or influence over visa issues but will advise where possible.

After students have been granted a Visa to enter Ireland, it is advisable to view this page on the Departments website regarding entering Ireland.
