HSR IN THE CITY OF FLORENCE

11

The new railway link in the city of Florence is part of the high-speed railway project between Milan and Naples. Two single-track tunnels of about 6.5 km each will link the two ends: Campo di Marte (the southern end) and Rifredi (the northern end). A cover between 5 and 27 m separates the tunnels from the existing urban structures.

The excavation is performed by EPB, a tunnel boring machine able to balance the stresses of the excavated ground. The diameter of this machine is of 9.4 m.

The subsidence's effects are very dangerous in the context of these works, because the tunnels are excavated in the underground of the city of Florence.

The design of underground works was focused at assuring the serviceability of the existing infrastructures and buildings. Subsidence models are solved to estimate the effects of excavations on buildings, train rails and monumental complex. Innovative consolidation technologies, as the "compensation grouting" are scheduled to contrast the subsidence.

SWS provided also the service of safety monitoring of infrastructures influenced by excavation during construction work.
