SWISS SYSTEM

General Tournament Information (Excerpted from Tom Bricca’s Original)

The entire concept behind the Swiss System is based upon the basic concept that all teams in a tournament should play the same number of games and, therefore, have an equal chance to advance. This is not the case with the “poole system.” The absolute worst situation cause by the “poole system” occurs when a great team is in a poole of 4, wins their first match 13-0 in fifteen minutes, waits 45 minutes while the other two teams finish, waits 1 hour each for the next two games to be played, eats lunch for an hour, waits 1 more hour while the quadrage games play out. That’s 4 hours and 45 minutes of waiting. This happens frequently in the “poole system.” Good tournament management strives to have as few teams sitting and waiting as possible. The “poole system” does not accomplish this. The one chink in the Swiss System that is unavoidable occurs when an odd number of teams are playing. There are MakeUp games that are played once all other games are completed. This requires the director to specify an even number of games if the director insists that everyone plays the same number of games. Not a big problem, but not perfect either.

A workable solution to this is to go ahead and play any number of games: odd or even, that fits with your schedule. If you’ve got an odd number of teams playing, the one team that sits during each round can be given a bye and can be scored with a victory (of say 13-9. It’s their lucky day!) At least they get something for just sitting around. Good teams won’t like this because they think they always win by a much larger margin than only +4.

If you are running an important tournament, arrange for a provisional team to play in advance … only if they are needed. Plan on the following time frames for game durations:

Singles 30 minutes Doubles 45 minutes Triples 60 minutes

Of course some singles games last over an hour and some triples games can last 2 hours. Please remember the difference between Petanque and Sport-Petanque. Newcomers and social events need only 2 games before Final Matches begin.

Swiss System - Tournament Organization 1. All members of the team must be present before they sign-up. 2. Pay First -- then sign up. It’s easier to have players print their

own names directly on to the Score Sheets. Remind them to print clearly.

3. Write in the Team Number next to the team names. 4. Post the Scoring Sheets in a visible place. 5. Post the Game Sheet that equals the number of teams you have

playing. Cover or black-out the games that will not be played.

If the entire sign-up process has been completed, and one or more teams arrive. No problem, just add their names to the bottom of the scoring sheets, and switch the Game Sheet to equal the number of teams that will be playing.
