As like our ‘N’ Level results, we see many peaks of excellence including many areas achieving 100% Passes, improvement in percentage passes, improvement in percentage Distinction, above national percentage in Passes and Distinction. A snapshot of Swiss Cottage is given below: • 98.5% of our Secondary 4 Express

students achieved Passes in at least five ‘O’ level subjects with 89.8% of them eligible for JC/MI and 98.4% eligible for Polytechnics.

• 77 (39.3%) and 56 (28.6%) of our Secondary 4 Express students achieved at least five and six Distinctions respectively.

• Our Secondary 4 Express cohort has achieved above national percentage in Passes for ALL subjects.

• 88.9% and 51.1% of our Secondary 5 Normal (Academic) cohort achieved Passes in at least three and five ‘O’ Level subjects respectively.

• 7.4% of our Secondary 5 Normal (Academic) students are eligible for JC/MI and 85.2% are eligible for Polytechnics. Four students have achieved three or more Distinctions.

• Our Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students have achieved above national percentage in Passes and Distinction in the ‘O’ level subjects offered to them.

• Our Secondary 3 Express students have performed well in their mother language subjects offered to them.

The positive results achieved by our students would not have been possible without the dedication, passion and sustained efforts from all our teachers and staff as well as our close partnerships with parents. Moving forward, we will continue to work together as a community to bring the school to greater heights.

2016: Thoughtful Leadership Journey in Its Fifth Year…GOING FAR, GOING TOGETHER, THE SWISS WAY

The TLP is driven by the Centre for Thoughtful Leadership (CTL) which oversees three sub-programmes, namely (i) the Glocal Perspectives Programme (GPP), (ii) the Values-in Action Programme (VIAP) and (iii) the Student Leadership Programme (StLP). The idea was to have ‘taught’ curricula in GPP and StLP

that would culminate in the hands-on VIA efforts of the students. At the same time, 2014 was the inaugural year when the youngest of the three programmes, GPP was piloted among the Secondary 1 Express classes.

THE CENTRE FOR THOUGHTFUL LEADERSHIPWe had a history of achievements in the Uniformed Groups, Student Council, Sports and CCA Leaders which was pivotal in the shift of the Swiss vision in 2012 - from “Vibrant Learning Community” to “Thoughtful Leaders”. The vision of giving every student a chance to lead – to bring about meaningful and sustainable change in their environment set the new and inspiring direction for us. We became one of the six Community Youth Leadership (CYL) schools in Singapore in 2014.

To effect the CYL function well, we developed the distinctive Thoughtful Leadership Programme (TLP). The TLP is also the Learning for Life (LLP) curriculum that propels the Thoughtful Leadership focus. It is one of the two Distinctive Programmes (the second being the Applied Learning Programme Scientific Research Skills) of the school.

Figure 1 Thoughtful Leadership Programme (TLP) is the Swiss Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP). The TLP or LLP is housed under the Centre for Thoughtful Leadership Committee formed in 2013.

THE GLOCAL PERSPECTIVES PROGRAMME

The GPP is a school-based curriculum designed to inspire our students’ thought, concern and action for the community by making constant links to the world they live in. The GPP is a weekly one-hour formal lesson that is designed for two years. At the end of the two years, we expect our students to be able to:

• discuss local and world issues with confidence• articulate a well-considered position on an issue• actively initiate suggestions for possible social action and change and • experience knowledge amalgamation using authentic materials and contexts through the use of communication and collaboration

skills as well as through independent learning and knowledge application.

With a deliberate emphasis placed on developing leaders who are grounded in values, the GPP team developed a Thinking Framework with three dimensions of thought – (i) to think ethically, to think in a forward-looking and positive manner and to think with the global/local (Glocal) contexts - so that when they create change, it is humane, sustainable and meaningful. The framework further delineates the specific habits of thinking under each dimension of thought.

For example Ethical Thinking is displayed through moral reasoning and perspective-taking in the light of a dilemma or conflict of priorities. Likewise, Forward and Positive Thinking are effected through problem-solving and positive-self-talk in the face of challenges. Glocal thinking is demonstrated through critical thinking and an awareness of cross-cultural skills.

“Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your

words, they become actions; watch your actions, they become

habits; watch your habits, they become character;

Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

Thematic Overview: Building An Inclusive Society

Selected skill-sets anchor each module taught and assessed every term. The topics were selected to support the VIA level outcomes and to infuse a sense of empathy for their environment and the people in the community. This approach was targetted at helping students in their roles as Thoughtful Leaders who want to build an inclusive society. (Refer to the following picture on the topics planned for the two years.

An Overview of the Two Years of Learning and Assessment

Stages of Implementation in 2014-2016The GPP was implemented in 2014 to Secondary 1 Express students as a pilot programme. Selected lessons were trialed among students from the Secondary 1 Normal Academic and Normal Technical streams. By 2015, all Secondary 1 and 2 classes were introduced to GPP.

Developing an Informed Response On Topics Through Perspective-Shifting

Students were exposed to perspectives on a given topic that are explored through phases: from the activation of their (i) familiar and personal schema, then (ii) the familiar but less personal local views and and finally (iii) the less familiar and less personal global stand-points – before arriving at an informed and locally rooted personal perspective. This approach of shifting perspectives was anchored through a variety of pedagogical approaches – research, role-play, debates, discussions and inquiry-based projects.

The six core skills of the EFG (Ethical, Forward/Positive and Glocal) Thinking Framework: Perspective-Taking, Moral Reasoning, Positive Self-Talk, Problem Solving, Cross-Cultural Communications and Critical Thinking are integrated into a Thinking Scaffold which also gets students to process values. (Refer to Step 4 of the Seven-Step Thinking Scaffold).

The Thinking Scaffold is modelled in each module by the teachers and students apply these skill-sets. This is repeated across the various GP modules in a Spiral Progression to anchor the desired Thinking mode of the Thoughtful Leader. The Seven-Step Thinking Scaffold can be summarised into three stages of Awareness, Action and Advocacy which is the overarching approach of all Thoughtful Leadership Programmes (GP, StL and VIA).

Our Tier 2 leadership training is customised for our select student leaders group which comprises the Student Council, Sports Leaders and CCA Council. As of now, we have established a Tier 2 curriculum based on our framework which includes leadership modules, mentoring, leadership opportunities through organising various school events and also leadership stories based on our Habitudes material. In addition, external platforms have also been given to student leaders such as attendees for national leaders conference (NS3LC), Service Learning Symposium, National Youth Leaders Conference, Outwards Bound Singapore (OBS), sharing at MOE MorningChers! Festival and various student leadership conferences.

Student Leadership ProgrammeThe Swiss Student Leadership Programme has a 2-tier structure comprising cohort programme as well as select programme. For the cohort programme, the school developed a student leadership curriculum based on our PEMT framework (Principled, Efficacious leaders with Managerial competencies and a Transformational mindset) which focuses on explicit leadership competencies at the different cohort levels to allow students to develop into a Thoughtful Leader. The student leadership curriculum has a spiral progression across the 4 years.

In Secondary 1, students will focus on self-leadership and self-management competencies to help them manage with the increased workload from primary school and settle down in secondary school.

In Secondary 2, peer leadership competencies such as communication and facilitation skills are taught, where students are given direct platforms for application such as their Integrated Project Work module where they will need to strategically plan activities for the pre-school children using their knowledge from various disciplines such as Applied Sciences.

At Secondary 3, students hold more leadership responsibilities as they become leaders and seniors in their CCAs and other student body groups. As such, they are equipped with advanced peer leadership competencies such as action management and project management skills. These skills are also used in the planning and execution of their elderly walk VIA project in March. After going through 3 years of leadership competencies, the Secondary 4 students will then be given greater space and platform to mentor their juniors before they step down.

Eldercare ProjectAs part of our vision to mould students to be Thoughtful Leaders, the Student Council continued their journey of the Diff-ability Project this year and extended it to advocate for the elderly. Looking at the community in Bukit Gombak, there was an increasing need to reach out to the elderly as there was an increasing number of elderly living around the vicinity.

The increasing need to build an inclusive society has propelled the Student Council to embark on this simulation project, the ‘Eldercare Experience’ to help Swiss students explore more real life issues that are happening around them. This project aims to help students be able to have a better understanding of the concerns and problems the elderly face in their daily lives. We hope that such programs will sensitise our students and spur them to make a positive change in the community.

Primary School Outreach Project This year, our Student Council and Sports Leaders also came together to host our cluster primary school student leaders in a ‘Swiss Leadership Experience’, to share their knowledge and experience in being a student leader.

Through the experience, not only do the primary school students get a chance to interact with other student leaders, they also learned a few leadership skills such as being a team player, the importance of empathising with your team mates and effective communication skills. In addition, these students were also given the Diff-ability Experience where they were put in the shoes of the People with Disabilities (PWDs).

Values-In-Action ProgrammesTHE VALUES-ACTION-PROGRAMME

The Swiss VIAP is one of the key levers to develop student character, leadership and spirit for volunteering. With a two-tiered whole-school approach to deliver the programme, all Swiss students experience VIA through diversified cohort programmes and student-directed VIA activities. “Awareness-Action-Advocacy” (3A) provides the framing for our VIA curriculum and programme to accentuate the importance of youth volunteerism through student-directed VIA. Our students, as thoughtful leaders, will step forward to advocate for the good cause they believe and lead others to achieve position and sustainable change for the community. Our VIAP is crafted in three tiers:

Tier One: Cohort VIA programmes The cohort VIA programmes centralised on specific theme: Secondary One: Environmental AwarenessSecondary Two: Junior CareSecondary Three: Elder Care For the secondary One cohort, to develop the sense of care and belief in self to make a difference and contribute to the community, a recycling project was embarked to collect items like newspaper and clothes. All proceeds garnered from the recycled items were donated to the Society for Physically Disabled. For the secondary Two cohort, to develop their project management and collaborative learning skills, the students were tasked to design educational toys using 3D printing and Aduino technology. The students were given the opportunity to interact with pre-schoolers and the teachers at preschools to better understand the needs of the children so as to incorporate these findings into the design of the toy. The finished products were then donated to the partnering preschools. Against the backdrop of ageing population in Singapore, and the need to foster inter-generational interaction, it is most apt to anchor on eldercare for the Secondary Three cohort. The students are given the opportunity to interact and plan for activities for seniors at Lions Befrienders’ Senior Activity Centres.

The spontaneity of the students was observed in their creative in crafting programmes like musical ensemble and games to interact with the seniors. The spectrum of different themes is to give them the exposure to a range of social causes. At the end of Secondary Three, classes are tasked to explore their choice of social cause and partners and embark on self-directed VIA projects at Secondary Four. For example, class of 4E3 2016 chose Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore (MDAS). The class went on a visit to understand the needs of the patients of muscular dystrophy. With the insights and knowledge gained, they shared with the school to create greater awareness of the challenges and resilience demonstrated by the patients. The class went on to organise a fund raising in school to sell handicrafts made by the patients and even rally volunteers to participate in MDAS’s flag day.

Tier 2: Co-curricular Activity based VIA programmes To inculcate a sense of empathy and care for the community, VIAP extends to the Co-Curricular Activites (CCA) groups as well. With the support of CCA teachers, respective CCA-VIA Leaders helped to organise VIA projects for their groups. For example, the Publications and Media Club (PMC), embarked on a Good Neighbours Projects organised by the Housing Development Board (HDB). They named themselves the ‘Swiss Rolls’. They campaigned for community spirit and harmonious living in the neighbourhood. On the school wide level, various open events were held for our students to contribute to the community. W2 Cluster ArtStudent artists from five secondary schools, Swiss Cottage Secondary, Hillgrove Secondary, Yusof Ishak Secondary, Kranji Secondary and Jurongville Secondary, came together for this mega-installation artwork called ‘A Journey in Space’.

The theme of Space has been symbolically used throughout to relate to the image of space in universe parallel to our environment. At the same time, the theme focused on spatial concept. Students were channelled into their own inner artists as they made marks onto sphere by experimenting with given materials. They would then contribute their spheres to a mega-installation artwork with the same given theme of space, led by Ng Yang Ce; Singapore’s multidisciplinary artist who makes sculpture, drawings and installations. The mega artwork installation was conceptualised to bring all the spheres together through the sub theme of embracing unity in diversity. The idea was to let students reflect on their differences through the spheres and at the same time, give them the notion of connectedness.

Swiss Arts ExpressionARTS TO EXPRESS, NOT JUST TO IMPRESS

On 24 March 2016, Swiss Performing Arts groups were given the opportunity to perform on a world-class stage, the Esplanade Theatre. The Swiss Arts Expression 2016 is a first ever multi-disciplinary concert put together by six Performing Arts Co-Curricular Activities in Swiss Cottage Secondary School, namely the Chinese Dance, Chinese Orchestra, Choir, Drama, Malay Dance and Swiss Winds (NCC Command Band). The theme ‘Arts to Express, Not Just to Impress’, reflects the deep passion for the arts. The performance is a rich blend of all the performing arts groups which exemplifies how the leaders overcome all odds to not just impress, but also express themselves with their art form. The audience was taken on a journey with six Performing Arts Council leaders as they leave their legacy in the school in their final year. It was a roller coaster ride of emotions and amazement as we see our young talents take over the stage with skill and precision. To further enrich our Swiss students and the community, educational sessions on Arts appreciation were conducted during curriculum time and the elderly from Lion Befrienders were invited to grace the occasion.

Hari Raya Celebration & Racial Harmony Day The theme for this year allowed us to explore our country’s cultural heritage. While recognising the varied nature of the cultural heritage from the different ethnic groups, we also acknowledge the commonalities among these cultural heritages and the role that they play to unify Singapore as one.

Our students were exposed to several cultural heritages such as our traditional cuisines and the use of Singlish which helps to bring Singaporeans together from all walks of life. Food vendors selling a wide variety of cuisines ranging from satay, ice-kacang and teh tarik were called in to educate our students on the rich heritage of these cuisines. The lower secondary classes also had the opportunity to try their hand at playing various traditional games such as the top, five stones and chapteh. Teachers and students alike had a fun time playing these games together while learning about the heritage of these games.

It was a fun and memorable day as the school came together to commemorate Racial Harmony Day. The sight of our students in various ethnic costumes and the smell of the piping hot satay will remain etched in our mind for some time to come.

SAF Day & NCC Day Commemorative Event

On the 1 July 2016, the school held a commemorative event on the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day and NCC Day. The SAF Day is a day with significant meaning for the National Servicemen (NSmen) as well as the rest of the nation. On this special day, thousands of servicemen, both past and present, pay tribute to national service; while schools express thanks to the many NSmen for their contributions to ensure the peace and security of Singapore. A strong SAF keeps Singapore safe and secure. We can raise our families, pursue our careers and live relatively worry-free lives. Our stable environment attracts foreign investors who know that their investments are safe in Singapore. These investments contribute to our nation’s economy and create jobs for our people. A strong SAF also means that we will not be easily threatened as a nation and can pursue our national interests as a free people.

Total Defence DaySwiss Cottage Secondary School commemorated the Total Defence Day with a dignified ceremony led by the 8th Uniformed Groups Council during the morning assembly. The march-in invokes a sense of patriotism. The Swiss Winds - NCC Command Band provided musical accompaniment of the trumpet and drum. These instruments have symbolic meaning that were used mainly in warfare during the 14th and 19th century. This was followed by a presentation by the Citizenship Education Ambassadors on the five pillars of defence; Psychological Defence, Social Defence, Economic Defence, Civil Defence and Military Defence.

In line with the theme of Total Defence this year, ‘Together We Keep Singapore Strong’, the Citizenship Education Committee engaged students by organising an interclass Instagram photography competition during the Character & Citizenship Education lessons which are conducted by the form teachers. The popular photo that shows most relevance to the theme emerged as winners. Through the display of images in social media, students express creativity and foster team spirit. Most importantly, through this activity, it is evident that students are able to show cohesiveness amongst the different races and nationality.

51st National DayA ceremonial parade and a concert have been organised to commemorate Singapore’s 51st National Day Observance in school. The celebration spearheaded by the Citizenship Education Committee and the Character & Citizenship Ambassador collaborates with students and staff the Uniformed Groups, Swiss Choir and Drama Club.

As the event centres on memories and sacrifices made by our forefathers towards nation building, Swiss Cottage reflects this moments through recitations of the “Recollections” to recount on the key phases of Singapore’s history. The

concert was enlivened by the rendition of National Day songs, with Swiss Choir taking lead for the sing-along. This year also sees Swiss Cottage version of the local gameshow ‘We Are Singaporeans’. Swiss teachers, together with the Drama Club members, showcased their talents through their exaggerated acting of the local occupation for the game. The pomp of the parade, fruit of many hours of training and rehearsals, resonated with the cheers coming from the school throughout the celebration. Through the parade proceedings and the light-hearted moments of the concert, Swiss Cottage truly had a meaningful 51st birthday celebration for Singapore!

Horizon ProgrammeENHANCED CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION TRIPAs part of the School’s Enhanced Citizenship Programme, students from both the Secondary 3 and Secondary 2 cohort embarked on an overseas trip to Bangkok, Thailand from 1 to 4 June 2016 and 16 to 19 of November 2016 respectively.

The objectives of the trip were to: • Arouse students’ interest in Humanities. • Enhance their understanding of

historical, geographical and socio-economic developments of a foreign country.

1. Cultural AspectOur students were introduced to the cultural and historical aspect of Thailand at Rattanokosin Exhibition Museum where the students engaged in hands-on activities. After which, students watched Siam Narimit Cultural Show based on the history of Thailand. Both places of interest highlight the historical influences which shaped the modern culture of Thailand. The next day, students were given the opportunity to enrich their understanding

of Thai culture by interacting with the students and staff from Triam Udom Suksa School. Our students engaged in activities such as practising how to write simple phrases in the Thai language, playing traditional Thai instruments and cooking Thai dishes. The visit to the school concluded with students and staff having dinner together on a floating restaurant along the Chao Phraya River.

2. Historical AspectThe second half of the trip focused on the experiences of the people in South-East Asia during World War 2. Several historical sites such as Hellfire Pass War museum, War Cemetery and the Bridge along River Kwai were specifically chosen to highlight the trials and tribulations of the people living under the Japanese rule.

Each night, students were allocated time to discuss and do reflections on their experiences for each day. At the end of the trip, students built upon their P.R.I.D.E. values of Dare to Try and Empathy and left Bangkok with fond memories.

“This trip is very meaningful and fruitful because we get to go to places we will not visit when we go to Bangkok with our parents. We went to the Hell fire pass which was at Kanchanaburi, 3-4 hours of bus ride before reaching and we get to go to places where we have never gone to and the food was really nice :)” – Leong Wai Hsin, 2E4, 2016

“The trip was AMAZING. I loved it. I got to spend time with my closest friends and even form new ones with others from different classes. The activities were super fun and intriguing. I love everything from the visit to Triam Udom Suksa School to the experience at the floating market.” – Rukhsar, 2E3, 2016

“From this trip, i was able to learn more about the history of Bangkok, Thailand. This trip also made the

friendship with my friends tighter as we were able to bond with each other every day. Thank you to all the teachers who were involved in planning for this trip making it an enjoyable one for everyone.” – Nur Farah, 2N1, 2016

“Being in Thailand, though only staying for a few days has been a great eye opener for me. Before, I never really had any distinct idea of info about Thailand but after travelling there and being exposed to its history and culture, I now find great interest and respect for the country.

Comparing it to Singapore, its environment, school system and political system are vastly different. It was definitely an experience seeing their highways and schools, as well as their shopping districts and well-known street food. ” – Natalie Lem, 3E4, 2016

“These four days in summary were very enjoyable and fun filled. Each day was filled with surprises and especially for the day when I watched the thai cultural performance. The thai cultural performance was visually stunning and appealing, and I was glad to have my friends to accompany me. I enjoyed our tour guide’s explanation for the various attractions and I feel thankful towards her for entertaining us on the bus. I hope to visit Bangkok again.” – Erika Ng En Xi, 3E4, 2016

“Spending time in Bangkok was very memorable and fun. In Bangkok, without my family, I have to take more responsibility and look out for myself and for my friends. I am very thankful for the teachers for taking care of us.” – Emily Kum, 3E2, 2016

Overseas Service Learning Trip @ Andong Village, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Under the Student Immersion Programme, the students of 3T1 and 2T1 embarked on an exciting service learning trip to Phnom Penh, Cambodia on 1-4 June and 16 -19 November respectively. The objectives for the trip were to:

• Expose our students to different culture and way of life of a foreign country;

• Inculcate the spirit of empathy and resilience through service learning; and

• Broaden our students global perspectives and allow them to gain a deeper appreciation of the life they have in Singapore.

Below are extracts on some of the programmes we had during our trip:

1. Student immersion at Andong VillageFor the main part of the trip, our students had the opportunity to interact and teach the children in the Andong village school. Prior to the trip, our students worked hard to plan and practice their instructional methods for their intended lessons.

On site, our students managed to carry out lessons and interesting activities which brought smiles and laughter to the Cambodian children. These lessons included conversational English, basic Maths and a number of art and craft projects. In return, the Cambodian students taught us their traditional Cambodian dance which our students managed to practice and eventually performed on stage. Our Cambodian hosts’ warmth and eagerness to learn left a deep impression on our Swiss students.

2. Community Service at Andong VillageAs part of their service learning, our students had the opportunity to do their part in the construction of the village. They were taught how to build a room from scratch and had a firsthand experience in paving the ground and building windows for the village’s sewing room. As they worked hard together, they developed a sense of camaraderie and fostered a strong class spirit among their classmates.

3. Visiting Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing FieldsIn order to better understand the tumultuous history of Cambodia, our students had a chance to visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields. Definitely not for the squeamish, visiting these sites gave our students a greater understanding of the difficult times Cambodia experienced under the iron rule of the Khmer Rouge. In turn, our students got to reflect and appreciate the stability and peace Singapore has been enjoying these past decades.

3T1’s Reflections

“It was a trip that I wished could have been longer. I couldn’t bear a thought of letting go those kids on the last day as seeing their faces becoming happier through the days and they recognising us more. Every morning when we reached the village, the kids were already standing and waiting for us to alight the bus. These little gestures they did made my morning despite how tired i was. After all, this trip has taught me many values such as respect, teamwork, care. Respecting others is key to get someone to respect you back. Teamwork is always needed especially when we were doing cement. We must care for everyone equally like caring for the kids, ourselves, our friends and teachers.” – Hettys Huda, 3T1

“After this trip, I learnt to be really grateful with what I have and not to take things for granted. I saw that the kids there were happy and thankful despite not having basic

amenities such as toilet, school and also clothing. On our last day, when all of us boarded the bus, some of the kids cried and it made me felt touched as they really showed appreciation of our presence.” – Faizzuan, 3T1

2T1’s Reflections

“My trip to Cambodia was fun because I was excited to meet my Cambodian friends. When I visited the orphanage, I felt a sense of pity towards the children there because I find that they do not have enough supply to live on. My group was tasked to read to the children. Even though the younger kids did not really understand what we have read, they still enjoyed their session. On the second day, we did some simple construction work such as laying cement. Through teamwork, we completed the work together successfully. On the third day, we visited the killing fields, we learnt that people were killed by soldiers in gruesome ways. We paid respect to those who lost their lives at this killing field by keeping a minute of silence. That day was also the last day at orphanage. I felt sad about leaving

the children there, as they were very friendly. I would really like to visit them again next year. This was a good experience with my classmates and I hope that we can have more overseas trips together.” – Faheera, 2T1

“During the trip, I learnt that good things don’t come easily. Such things can only be obtained through hard work. I saw the Cambodian kids, working so hard to fulfil the basic needs of their families. I have learnt that no matter how dirty the place is, the kids there still felt happy. They were also very cheerful and always asked to be piggy backed around. I got to see both the village and the city. The weather was very hot but the villagers were so poor that they could not afford to buy a fan. I felt sad that such things in Singapore are taken for granted. We buy such things and use it for a while and then discard them. At Cambodia, kids keep their things properly and this is because they value them. We need to appreciate things that we have too because our parents work hard to provide for us.” – Kasyful, 2T1

Horizon ProgrammeSERVICE LEARNING TRIP (MALAYSIA)As part of the school’s Values-In-Action programmes, selected secondary two and three students embarked on a Overseas Service Learning Project to Johor, Malaysia. There were two trips, one in June and another in November.

The main objective of this trip is to:

• Reinforce positive character values and social emotional skills through the platform of overseas service learning.

• Develop students’ leadership skills through the process of planning and execution for a service-learning project.

• Expose students to a different culture and lifestyle in Malaysia and broaden their perspective of the world.

Schools exchange programme with Chung Hwa High School in Kluang. To expose our students to different culture, we partnered a local school in Kluang, Chung Hwa High School, to share learning experiences. For example, our students took on the role of facilitators to share on geographical investigations skills using equipment like data loggers, weather trackers and water testing. Our counterpart, Chung Hwa High School also shared about their curriculum and co-curricular activities.

Partnership with Bethel Home in Ulu Tiram (June)Our students also took on the challenge of planning for a three days activities and interactions with children at Bethel Home in Ulu Tiram. The student leaders were tasked with planning, logistic preparations and execution of activities at the home. Some of the highlights were to help spruce up the compound, design a family tree and to plan for a mini carnival for the children. The enthusiasm and spontaneity demonstrated by our Swiss Thoughtful Leaders were remarkable and earned accolades from the home.

Partnership with Saleng Home (November)For the second trip in November, which was intended for secondary two cohort, we were overwhelmed by the requests of past participants from the secondary three cohort to come on board and serve the community once again. These secondary three students took on the role of facilitators and leaders to plan and prepare the logistics with their juniors. Some of the highlights were to design and paint two murals for the home and organize an appreciation cum sports day for the staff and children of the home.

Student’s Reflections

“I learnt to be more courageous and empathetic. Prior to the trip, I was apprehensive about interacting with people with special needs. But through the three days of activities and interaction with the residents at Saleng Home, I learnt how to interact and work with them.“ – Daniel Irfan, 3N1

“I can better appreciate the value of teamwork. Though we barely knew each other for a few days, we bonded together through the challenges and fun times. We looked out for one another and helped out whenever possible. I also felt a sense of accomplishment and understand the value of resilience. Although we are exhausted from the planning, preparations and execution of activities for the residents, we were determined to persevere till the end, as we do not want to disappoint the residents at the home.” – Jing Wen, 2E2

• Immerse and learn more about the local culture

Horizon ProgrammeAPPLIED SCIENCE TRIP

Below are extracts on some of the exciting programmes

School ExchangeStudents were ushered to SM Sains Matang for an afternoon of exchange with local students. The group was warmly welcomed by the Principal, Mr Bahtiar, his staff and the students. The local students entertained us with the sharing of their local culture while Swiss Cottage students shared some of the distinctive Science activities that they have gone through with their counterparts.

After the exchange, the students proceeded to Sarawak Biodiversity Centre where they learnt more about the Centre’s conservation efforts and were given a change to prepare herbarium specimens on their own. The visit ended with a tour of the centre as well as a peek into the taxidermy collection the centre has.

Heart 2 Heart with OrangutanStudents spent about half a day at Matang Wildlife centre participating in the well-known and meaningful programme called Heart 2 Heart. During this half day, the students were introduced to the history of the endangered Bornean orangutan (pongo pygmaeus), the process of forging mutual trust between caregiver and the orangutans, preparing food and cleaning the cages for orangutans. Both students and teachers were amazed at the amount of effort put in

by the caregivers who may need to spend a few days and nights in the forest with the orangutans before earning their trusts.

The students also had the opportunity to witness the outcome of the orangutan conservation efforts at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre where they see the orangutans are able to roam freely amongst the nature now. It was a tiring yet memorable one for both our students and teachers.

Semenggoh Wildlife CentreThe Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is the biggest Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sarawak; established in 1975 as a sanctuary for the injured and orphaned orangutans. This is the most well-known rehabilitation centre for tourists to visit. Students were treated to sights of free roaming orang utans in the wild and also a guide on what the local authorities are doing to help in the conservation of these wild animals.

The Quest for RafflesiaMany have read, heard and seen picture of Rafflesia but few have seen one in person. We ventured to Gunung Gading National Park in search of a bloomed Rafflesia. It was like a gamble as the world’s largest flower only blooms for about five days before starting to decay beyond recognition.

Luck was on our side as we managed to see and smell the 4-day old Rafflesia.

Our friendly tour guides shared valuable knowledge about the jungle as we trek our way to find the Rafflesia. As the trekking path only allows one single file, we passed down the information like the telephone game. The last few people always had to crack their heads trying to figure out what was said originally by the tour guides as they pointed to those mysterious looking plants and animals along the way.

The air was quite still which made us more aware of our body heat but the laughter and the “telephone game” kept us energised. The seemingly mission impossible was accomplished.

Sarawak Cultural VillagePossibly the finest “Living Museum” in South East Asia, Sarawak Cultural Village combines history, tradition, lifestyle and architecture with a dash of education and portion of theatre to create a unique multi-cultural extravaganza.

Seven unique traditional houses, spread over a beautiful 17-acre site, gives students the perfect introduction to Sarawak, its people and cultures, whether one is looking for insight into longhouse lifestyle or a taste of exuberant Sarawak hospitality, Sarawak Cultural Village wow students with its rich culture and heritage.

Longhouse VisitThe stay at Annah Rais Longhouse, was well arranged with plenty of guided tours and activities to keep students busy and occupied whole day long. The local guide/guides are well-trained and experienced in activities such simple crafts, simple traditional songs and dances, cooking and helping out in a village library. The entertaining guide gave a good and clear history of their tribe and kept the students fully entertained.

Sarawak River CruiseA river cruise was arranged to allow students to interact over a sumptuous meal as the sunsets in the background bathing the atmosphere with streaks of orange and red. The lower deck provides a dinning venue where the upper deck offers the traditional dances as guests take in slowly the beauty of Kuching river banks. The students and teachers felt rejuvenated and ready to take on the next day itinerary.

Student’s Reflections

On Sarang Buaya: “It is very new to me. I was exposed to the kampong lifestyle where the pace is much slower compared to Singapore and the people there can do their things at their own pace and time. We can learn from the farm cultivator in terms of the pride and organisation in managing their pineapple plantation.” – Francene Mooi, 3E5

“There are many differences that I could see between Singapore and Malaysia. The experience and knowledge that we have gained during the tour may be something that we can use in our daily life in Singapore.” – Iffah Humairah, 3T1

Swiss Youth Leaders InvestitureThe Swiss Youth Leaders Investiture is a combined investiture of the various student leadership bodies in Swiss to recognise the contributions of our Swiss leaders who have shown dedication in serving the school in various areas. It also displays the unity in strength of our different student leaders who come together to serve and achieve a common goal of becoming Thoughtful Leaders. The investiture also signifies the renewal of vows by the next batch of leaders who will continue the legacy of their seniors and lead the school to strive for excellence.
