Gino - Teamcap - Bryan

13

Page 15: Swire Youth 116Ed

14

Page 16: Swire Youth 116Ed

Page 17: Swire Youth 116Ed

16

Page 18: Swire Youth 116Ed

Swire Girls Basketball Team Captains

HAHA!

Page 21: Swire Youth 116Ed

30

Page 32: Swire Youth 116Ed

39

Page 41: Swire Youth 116Ed

40

Page 42: Swire Youth 116Ed

Internationalism in HKU

Hong Kong is known to the world as an international hub for finance, businesses and corporations, as well as in culture, fes-tivals, cuisine and the like – being dubbed as where “east meets west”. But is Hong Kong really “International” as it so claims to be? It very well may be so, we can see that aspect of Hong Kong for ourselves, especially when we compare to other nations or cities. However, we may not be really getting what we would have expected; sometimes we build up so much in our minds such that the reality can be quite far off. But for now, let’s take a step back and bring this topic more close to home where we can relate ourselves as students or perhaps even as a hall mate to interna-tionalism in HKU.

What is Internationalism?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, internationalism can

71

Page 73: Swire Youth 116Ed

Internationalism in HKUbe defined as ‘the state of being international, or happening in and between many countries’. This definition is actually quite vague and didn’t give much understanding. However this also points out the difficulty to give a clear definition to what everyone can have differences about as each may have their own definition or opinion. Thus, it is im-portant to put it into context, in this case we look at in the view of internationalism in the universi-ty, but even then there may be differences. Person A may think that internationalism requires people of many different ethnicities together in one place whereas person B may think that internationalism requires an interaction or exchange of people of dif-ferent cultures.

In actual fact, the concept of internationalism is not concretely defined so each person may have their own take on it or interpretation of the term.

Before you carry on reading, perhaps you can also take a moment to think what the definition of internationalism is to you or to put it in more tangible terms; what you expect in HKU for it to be considered an international community.

Internationalism in HKU

Based on the current state of HKU, it would give the impression that HKU has quite the international presence where we have quite the range of ethnic or racial backgrounds in the students and as well as the staff. Thus we cannot deny that students have quite the exposure to different people and cultures, at least for many it’s quite the jump from what we’d experience in our own local communities in secondary school before coming to HKU for both local and non-local students.

72

Page 74: Swire Youth 116Ed

However just by having ethnic diversity does not equal to having internationalism and is not enough if we are to claim ourselves to have a global community. What may also be important are the interrelations between people of different ethnicities, in which there is a lack of. We can observe in HKU that people of the same ethnicities or of similar traits tend to group or hang out together; it is quite natural as we would be most comfortable with people that are of similar cultural background that also speak the same language.

The Issues

The issue of internationalism can also be easily linked to the rela-tionship between locals and non-locals in halls which have been brought up a number of times: in past Swire Youth, ExCo, War-den etc. A lot of problems identified here can also be applicable to the overall situation in the university.

It has been pointed out that one of the biggest reason stem from the language barrier where for many the common language we share, English, is not their first language and thus will be uncom-fortable in holding up conversations that is not in their mother tongue. Extra-curricular activities or programmes aren’t always held in English that effectively leave out people who can’t speak the language, which in many cases is Cantonese – thus making it hard for people of different cultural backgrounds to interact with each other. Thinking positively, although it may be hard to achieve in reality, the language barrier is a hurdle that we can get over; as we all can speak English, we’ve already got part of the solution. Some people may feel uncomfortable to speak it as they are not confident, but on the flip side, there are many cases where people who are quite willing to do so as they also view good opportunity to practice their English.

What we may be more concerned about is that it may be that there is simply not much interest for students, especially locals, to engage with people of different ethnic backgrounds and appre-ciate their culture, let alone making friends. It seems that we put up the barriers ourselves due to the differences in language and

73

Page 75: Swire Youth 116Ed

culture. There is a divide in the aspect of friendship groups be-tween people of different international backgrounds. It is often up to individuals in order to make these connections between people of different ethnicities and to try work around their differences. There may be some students that are looking for a university life in which cultural exchange is one aspect of it, especially for ex-change students, however for many others it’s not.

Why is Internationalism Important?

Throughout the article we’ve been looking at internationalism as something positive, but what’s the point of it all – it’s now time to stop and ask ourselves, why? It may be that those who’ve got an answer are the ones that have the incentive and desire to be actively engaging themselves in interacting and creating relation-ships, despite their differences, with people that come from dif-ferent parts of the world.

With the international community that we have in Hong Kong, it is quite important to understand and respect the cultural values of different people that we may end up meeting, working or even living with throughout our lives. That way people won’t be too fast to make judgments; on any differences in doing things, opinions or views – it is mutual as we ourselves won’t want to be under someone else’s judgements or stereotyped. Internationalism will not only help us gain that social and cultural awareness of dif-ferent regions around the world, but also locally. By interacting with different people we can gain different perspectives to current issues or events that can help broaden our horizons – to go out of our comfort zones, to learn, to see things in a different way. It is important to keep an open mind and be more flexible with your ideas and thoughts that of which internationalism is a part of. It is not something we can tell you to do, but rather you should go and experience it yourself.

6 Mind Boggling Paradoxes by Muhammad !!

A paradox is a statement or an argument that either contradicts itself, or leads to a situation which is logically impossible. Although some paradoxes, as in Physics, can be resolved as they are often missing a crucial insight required to resolve the issue, many are “true logical paradoxes” and thus can’t possibly be resolved. Some of the paradoxes compiled below can be solved, while others can’t. How

Value of Truth ! "This statement is a lie." The sentence is grammatically correct and appears straightforward enough. But work carefully through its implications and you soon see it is anything but straightforward. In announcing itself to be a lie it is stating that it cannot be a lie, in which case it is true, which is to say that it really is a lie, which means it is not a lie. What is going on?!

92

Page 94: Swire Youth 116Ed

The Omnipotence Paradox ! The paradox states that: If a being can perform any action, then it should be able to create a task which this being is unable to perform; hence, this being cannot perform all actions. Yet, on the other hand, if this being cannot create a task that it is unable to perform, then there exists something it cannot do. For example, an omnipotent being must be able to do everything, including creating a stone so heavy that it itself cannot lift it. But if it cannot lift the stone, then it surely can’t do everything.

Unexpected Hanging Paradox ! A judge tells a condemned prisoner that he will be hanged at noon on one weekday in the following week, but that the execution will be a surprise to the prisoner. He will not know the day of the hanging until the executioner knocks on his cell door at noon that day. Having reßected on his sentence, the prisoner draws the conclusion that he will escape from the hanging. His reasoning is in several parts. He begins by concluding that the “surprise hanging” can’t be on a Friday, as if he hasn’t been hanged by Thursday, there is only one day left – and so it won’t be a surprise if he’s hanged on a Friday. Since the judge’s sentence stipulated that the hanging would be a surprise to him, he concludes it cannot occur on Friday. He then reasons that the surprise hanging cannot be on Thursday either, because Friday has already been eliminated and if he hasn’t been hanged by Wednesday night, the hanging must occur on Thursday, making a Thursday hanging not a surprise either. By similar reasoning he concludes that the hanging can also not occur on Wednesday, Tuesday or Monday. Joyfully he retires to his cell conÞdent that the hanging will not occur at all. The next week, the executioner knocks on the prisoner’s door at noon on Wednesday — which, despite all the above, will still be an utter surprise to him. Everything the judge said has come true. It shouldn’t either have been true, or at least surprising, but it has been. How?

93

Page 95: Swire Youth 116Ed

Paradox of the Court ! The Paradox of the Court is a very old problem in logic stemming from ancient Greece. It is said that the famous sophist Protagoras took on a pupil, Euathlus, on the understanding that the student pay Protagoras for his instruction after he had won his Þrst case. Some accounts claim that Protagoras demanded his money as soon as Euathlus completed his education; others say that Protagoras waited until it was obvious that Euathlus was making no effort to take on clients and still others assert that Euathlus made a genuine attempt but that no clients ever came. In any case, Protagoras decided to sue Euathlus for the amount owed. Protagoras argued that if he won the case he would be paid his money. If Euathlus won the case, Protagoras would still be paid according to the original contract, because Euathlus would have won his Þrst case. Euathlus, however, claimed that if he won then by the court’s decision he would not have to pay Protagoras. If on the other hand Protagoras won then Euathlus would still not have won a case and therefore not be obliged to pay. The question is: which of the two men is in the right?

94

Page 96: Swire Youth 116Ed

The Barber Paradox ! Suppose there is a town with just one male barber; and that every man in the town keeps himself clean‐shaven: some by shaving themselves, some by attending the barber. It seems reasonable to imagine that the barber obeys the following rule: He shaves all and only those men in town who do not shave themselves. Under this scenario, we can ask the following question: Does the barber shave himself ? Asking this, however, we discover that the situation presented is in fact impossible: ‐ If the barber does not shave himself, he must abide by the rule and shave himself. ‐ If he does shave himself, according to the rule he will not shave himself. No, the Barber is not Asian, and is capable of growing a beard. !Schrodinger’s Cat !An unfortunate cat is locked in a box with some poison that is released only if a radioactive atom decays, which is an equal probability of both decaying and not decaying. Principles of quantum mechanics (which have been proven true) stipulate that we must consider the atom to have both decayed and not decayed at the same time while we haven’t observed it. This means that the cat exists in the state of being both dead and not dead, alive and not alive, all at the same time!
