Welcome back to the players, committee and fans of Mildenhall Town FC for tonight’s Velocity Trophy match. Velocity are the sponsors of this league cup and they are the 3G pitch specialists who actually installed a number of pitches across the UK, including those at AFC Sudbury and Aveley, where we have of course both played at recently. I spoke to one of their directors recently, Joe Boniface, and was very impressed with their track record and knowledge in this specialist area. Here we are back at the Aspen Waite Arena already for another cup game, this time the Velocity League Trophy

tie following Saturday’s thrilling FA Cup win over Frome Town. Saturday was another brilliant victory and performance and it gave me so much satisfaction to see all the smiling faces of the fans at the end of the game as they cheered the lads off the pitch. Football is all about highs and lows and that was very much one of the great highs I have seen in the 20 years I have been watching the Swifts.

I thought the 2-1 scoreline flattered the hosts and we should have won it more convincingly, considering the chances we created and the fact that their keeper won man of the match. Although our winner

from Sam Bantick came with only 12 minutes to play, I thought we could have gone on to score more, as the visitors became stretched, in search of an equaliser. The Frome Town officials were very gracious in defeat and wished us well in the next round, confirming we were well worth our victory, which was nice to hear.

Tonight, it is back to domestic cup action and Mildenhall Town are making their second visit here this season, having opened the season here on August 12th when we ran out 2-1 winners, with goals from the since departed Reece Grant. Mildenhall Town have made a steady start to their

first season at this level, having won 4 and lost 4 of their league games so far and will therefore no doubt provide stiff opposition for tonight’s encounter. They actually had last Saturday off, following their defeat the previous week 4-6 against Tilbury, so expect them to be fresh and full of energy tonight!

With another cup competition, plus FA Trophy action again on Saturday here against Carshalton Athletic,

you may be wondering when our next league game is, and this is dependent on cup replays etc of course. Please keep an eye on our web site at http://heybridgeswiftsfc.com/ for details of this plus our Twitter and Facebook pages where we post regular updates.Enjoy tonight’s game!

FROM THE

MANAGERJody Brown

Good evening & welcome back to the Aspen Waite Arena for tonight’s League Cup game.

A special week has passed us by, two FA Cup victories in front of our home support, £12k more in prize money, and most importantly the magic of the FA Cup is still alive & kicking here in Heybridge.

By the time of reading this, the draw will have been made. Will it have been the big tie many want? The Leyton Orient, or will we get the draw I’d love to see - the lowest ranked side left in it at home! I’ve been as far as the 2nd round before and it was special. It captures the imagination of the community & to a degree the whole nation. To be part of that is career changing, and can become a defining moment for a football club. So here’s hoping for a kind draw either way.

Tonight is yet another big game. I heard whispers of this game being an unneeded distraction. Couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s very much needed. We have a good group of players, and they all need to play games. Yes there will be changes tonight, perhaps 7 or 8, but every player is ready and the competition for places is fierce. I think the changes will be good for our performance, no FA Cup hangovers, fresh legs, hungry minds, and a few with a point to prove. Should make for a high tempo cup tie.

I also think it’s important to remind everyone who we are and what we are. An FA Cup run doesn’t suddenly put the League Cup beneath us. Come April we’d love to be in that final, and it would be a huge achievement - just like the Senior Cup final against Concord Rangers was not so long ago. They create memories, club history, and medals define a players career. So we will be giving it everything.

I’m excited to see Josh Fagbohun from the start tonight, along with young technically gifted boys like George Cole & Nick Brown. I’m hoping and expecting the boys to excel in the starting lineup, and I’m hoping to progress to the next round.

No Trophy is too small. We are proud to have won the Tolleshunt Darcy Cup three years on the spin, and we will be proud to go as far into this cup as we can too.

I can’t wait for tonight’s game and this great opportunity to see the full strength of our squad. Hope you all feel the same.

Have a great night & enjoy the game.

The club was established in August 1898 and won the Suffolk Junior Cup in 1900, beating Southwold RA Volunteers 4–0.[2] After playing at a variety of grounds, following World War II the club moved to its current ground on Recreation Way, which they initially shared with the cricket club. In 1945 they joined the Bury and District League, where they played until 1969, when they switched to the Cambridgeshire League. In 1975 the club reached the Premier Division. In 1988 they joined the newly formed Division One of the Eastern Counties League. The step up required the club to upgrade the ground’s facilities – such as adding a covered stand, perimeter rails, hard standing, a new clubhouse, and floodlights – in order to satisy the league’s requirements. The last of these upgrades was completed in time for the beginning of the 1994–95 season. In 1992–93 the club’s reserves, still playing in the Cambridgeshire League, won the Cambridgeshire Junior Cup. The following season the reserves won Creake Shield, and then went on to complete a league and cup double the season after that by again winning the Junior Cup and Division 1b. In 1996 the club’s first team won the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup in 1996. Three years later they finished second in the league, and were promoted to the Premier Division. The club also underwent a major transformation during this period, brining the ground up to current standards, and building

the excellent clubhouse whilst still retaining an enviable central location.Steele was succeeded by Trevor Munns in 2001, leading to six years of consistently creditable finishing positions in the ECL PREMIER Division culminating in a superb 2nd spot in 2006/7, garnering a total of 97 points. Unfortunately Wroxham got 101 points! Hall again reached the Suffolk Premier Cup Final in 2003 where they lost to the very strong AFC Sudbury in the Ram Meadow Final. The club also had two excellent runs in the FA Vase, losing away to Hillingdon Borough in 2006 and away to Billingham Synthonia in 2007, both times reaching the last 16. The 2006 run included the defeat of then Vase holders Didcot Town in a replay at Recway in front of a club record 320 spectators, probably the finest night in the club’s history.Current chairman Martin Tuck succeeded Brian Brigden in 2002, and he has led the club through a turbulent, although largely successful period. Munns resigned in November 2007 to be succeeded by local duo, Dave Pinkowski and Tony Lyes. The highlight of their reign was a 7-0 drubbing of Lowestoft Town, their heaviest league defeat in 50 years. Pinkowski and Lyes were followed by former Bolton Wanderers Premiership star Simon Charlton. Charlton had a very successful season in charge, culminating in a superb 3-1 victory over Wisbech Town in the Cambs Invitation Cup Final at the Abbey Stadium. Charlton left in 2010 to be replaced by ex Woodbridge boss, Christian Appleford. Christian, ably assisted by Tom Youngs led the

team to immediate success, retaining the coveted Cambs invitation Cup, beating Haverhill Rovers 2-0 in the 2011 final, as well as attaining a highly creditable 5th place in the league.

Outstanding players in recent seasons include Mat Mitchel King, who after being sold by the Hall to Histon, progressed into the Football League playing for Crewe Alexandra, and more recently, AFC Wimbledon. Local legend John Sands took the Ridgeons League by storm during his time with the club, scoring a club record of 31 league goals in 20010/11, earning himself a transfer to Bury Town. Sands’ record only lasted one season however, as Andrew Wood won the coveted League Golden boot in 2011/12 scoring a club record of 33 league goals. The club is still undergoing change. In recent seasons both the U18 and the reserve team have been disbanded. However, the club has re-established a very strong youth section, and struck strong links with local independent clubs Mildenhall High Town and Mildenhall Utd, which should be of great benefit moving into the future. Also, the club launched a redevelopment fund in November 2010, with the aim to improve further the facilities at Recway. The club has set an ambitious target of £25,000.In 2016/17 season, the club achieved it’s most successful season, gaining promotion to Step 4 of the National League pyramid, by securing the Thurlow Nunn League & Cup double.

Cup games and more cup games,

On Saturday Swifts played Somerset side Frome Town in the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round. Nothing much really happened

other than Callander, Chatting and Luque all having chances. But thankfully Luque popped up in the 28th minute having turned the defender inside out and hit a curling shot from the left hand side onto the inside of the far post. That is now 11 goals in 12 games for the Spanish striker who’s on fire. We piled on the pressure for the rest of the half but couldn’t find a second. So we went into the second half full of confidence looking for a second. But Frome started to have more of the ball and starting to create more chances (even though they couldn’t hit a barn door) and unfortunately scored on 74 minutes from a corner. But that only lasted for 4 minutes when great play from

both Luque and Chatting resulted in the latter crossing the ball into the box and Bantick slotting it home from close range at the back post. At that point Dark and the returning George Cole came on for Chatting and Bantick respectively to add some defensive solidarity for the remaining 12 minutes. We could’ve scored more but we held on by keeping it in the corners until the final minutes. That win puts us into the 4th Qualifying Round draw. But for now we have now got some more cup ties to focus on. Obviously we welcome tonight’s opponents Mildenhall to the Aspen Waite Arena for the second time already this season. But we also have some FA Trophy action against Bostik South side Carshalton Athletic on Saturday. Last time out against Mildenhall we won 2-1 with goals from ex-swifts striker Reece Grant. It was a heated match with one of their players being sent off in the latter stages of the game. But it was a good game last time around and should be a good one again tonight in which the winners will face Bury Town away in the next round.I hope you all enjoy tonight’s Velocity Trophy round 1 tie, and remember to cheer on the lads as loud and clear as you can.

FROM THE

VICE CAPTAINLuke CALLANDER

Evening All,

Tonight we host Mildenhall in the Velocity Cup. They were the visitors here for the first

game of the season and proved tough opposition. We know they have had a decent start to their maiden season and we will need to be at our best to get through the next round. Obviously there has been a lot of talk about the FA Cup run we are on. The boys were outstanding Saturday and fully deserved the victory. Again it was great to see a bumper crowd in and the support was excellent once again. We have now learnt that we will Face Haringey Borough in the next round of the FA Cup. Although it was slightly disappointing to draw a side in our own league, it gives both teams a great opportunity to get into the first round proper and hopefully draw a big team and be on the television.

As a squad we know that we must concentrate on every game in every competition we play. We want to win every game and will not be taking any game for granted. To progress in the league cup would be great for the club and a good chance for silverware. Hopefully tonight will see another entertaining game and we appreciate all the support we have received from you all.

THE lengthy unbeaten run that has been the hallmark of Swifts’ fightback from the brink of relegation and put the club in top spot for several weeks repeated a feat enjoyed by the club 60 years ago.

Swifts enjoyed a five-match unbeaten run at the start of the 1957-58 season to sit proudly at the top of the Essex & Suffolk Border League’s Premier Division.Mr Myall, the club secretary at the time, praised the Swifts first eleven for ending a disappointing run.“Congratulations to the 1st Eleven for such a wonderful start to the season, which so far reads played 4, won 4, lost 0, drawn 0, goals for 16, goals against 2,” wrote Mr Myall.“It is a long while since such a good start has been made and all the more heartening as three of the four games have been away from home.“Perhaps the best win was against League Champions Long Melford at Long Melford. A fine performance. It is early days yet, but such a good start is very encouraging.“The reserve eleven have not started so well and have not settled down yet.”Swifts first eleven extended their winning run to five matches by beating Chelmsford City A 2-0 on September 28, 1957 [programme cover pictured].Swifts: Long, Askew, Barber, Freeman, Braybrook, Cousins, Gill, Whittaker, Hymas, Moss, Brazier.Mr Myall noted that the Scraley Road crowds had dug deep into their pockets to assist a former player, Mr H Boutwell, who had been ill.Mr Myall added: “Mr Boutwell wishes to thank all supporters and friends who gave so generously for his ground collection.“The sum of £7 was collected. He is most grateful and the Club are more than pleased to have helped an old player and hope that he will

make a full recovery from his illness.”A four-game winning run at the start of the season was also enjoyed at the start of the 1981-82 season when the Swifts rattled in 15 goals and conceded just one to make a flying start to the Essex Senior League campaign.Swifts beat Ford United 3-0 with goals from Ken Gray, Neville Fox and Chris Smith. But the scoreline flattered the Swifts as they needed goalkeeping heroics from Willson to thwart a Ford’s fightback.Swifts: Willson, Swain, Cochren, Strong, Smith, Sringett, Glding, Coventry, Cowlishaw, Gray, Fox.
