Rules, Syllabus Structure

1. Eligibility:

For Admission: A candidate seeking admission to P.G. Diploma in Sports

Journalism must satisfy the following conditions.

1. He/She must be between the age group of 18-35 years. Any person who conforms

to the desired age group and is not suffering from any ailment is eligible for the

course. A relaxation in age could be given in exceptional cases.

2. A bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Swarnim Gujarat Sports

University or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Health & Physical Education or a

degree in sports from any recognized University/Institution.

or

Any bachelor’s degree

3. Medical Fitness Certificate from Chief Medical Officer of the Civil Hospital or

Registered Medical Practitioner.

2. Medium of Instruction & Examination:

The candidates will have the option of choosing the medium of instruction

for P.G. Diploma in Sports Journalism from three languages : Gujarati, Hindi and

English. Question papers shall be set in all the three languages.

The candidates appearing for the P.G. Diploma in Sports Journalism course

will have the option of answering all papers either in English /Hindi/Gujarati in

Part – I (Theory).

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course will be one year. The dates for commencement

and conclusion of the course shall be fixed by the University authorities (June to

April every year).

3. Course Fee:

The total course fee including the examination fee will be: University Fees +

Laboratory Expenses (Rs.16,000/= + Laboratory Expenses)

5. Scheme of Examination/Pattern of Examination:

o Eligibility for appearing in the examination:

Students should keep the terms with at least 75% attendance. He/She should

complete all practical and other work allotted in all parts of the syllabus.

o Centre & Structure of Examination:

The Examination (Both theory & Practical) will be conducted at the University

Campus or under the University Examiners Observation at the Prescribed

Venue.

o Theory & Practical Examination time:

The Theory Examination will be held at the end of the term. The duration will

be three hours per paper and each paper will carry 100 marks.

The practical examination will be held before the theory examination. Each

practical paper will be conducted separately and will carry total 250 marks.

The Project Viva Voca examination will be held before the theory examination

and will carry total 250 marks.

o Standard of Passing:

The student has to obtain minimum 40% of marks in each theory paper.

The student has to obtain minimum 50% of marks in each practical paper.

The student has to obtain minimum 50% of marks in Project.

The student has to obtain 50% aggregate marks together in theory, practical &

project assessment to pass the course as a whole.

o Award of Class:

§ In theory: Class will be awarded to the students at the end of the course on

the basis of aggregate marks obtained by him/her in theory, practical &

project part as shown in the table given below.

Course Code : DSJ-101 Introduction to Mass Media

Objectives : To introduce students to the fundamentals of news reporting, writing and judgment, as

well as to increase students’ knowledge of local, national, and international current events. Also covered are interviewing techniques, issues in ethics and professional conduct, and traditional and online news-gathering methods. Students will be expected to write clear, accurate and meaningful news stories.

Objectives: Sports Journalism introduces students to sports reporting careers and to the writing

style sports writers and media relations professionals use. The course stresses the importance of basic writing fundamentals and high ethical standards, essential values for sports journalists.

Objectives : The objective of this course is to recognize the major events in the development of

modern day photography and to learn the impact of technology in electronic Media. The course will be helpful in identifying the basic parts of a camera and their functions. Visuals will help to keep record of events in history and helps bring more to a story with an image that the story itself.

Curriculum: Unit - I Introduction of Photo Journalism, Forms of Photo Journalist, Methods of

Photography and videography, Selection of visuals, visuals in Mass Communication and its Impact.

Objectives : The objective of this course is to make aware with the current activities changes in

the scenario of the sports world. The course will be helpful to identifying day to day information related to sports and various national and international events.

Curriculum: Unit - I Affairs related to various sports and events. National and international

games. Olympics and Asian games etc. Unit – II Information related to various Authorities, academies and structure of

various sports departments. Unit – III Changes in rules and new amendments for the different games. New

records, achievements, awards and statistics of games. Unit – IV Law related to sports and important decisions, ruling and guidelines in

sports.

Course Code : DSJ – 105 Events and Communication

Objectives : The objective of this course is to make aware with the sports event of the sports

world. The course will be helpful to improve knowledge about the sports events and communications.

Curriculum: Unit - I Various events of sports and their fields or areas. Stadiums. Indoor and

outdoor games. Unit – II Management of event, planning, organizing, conducting and

documentation of events. Unit – III Preparing handouts, broachers, jingles, reports, punch lines and slogans

for society to communicate the importance of sports. Unit – IV Publication material, tools of propaganda, various modes of

communication. Event coverage planning and management.

Course Code : DSJ – 106 Internship & Project writing

The purpose of this course is to provide professional internship experiences with television and radio stations, film, video, and new media production companies, governmental agencies and production units, audio recording studios, and new media industries. Students are responsible for securing their own internship position.
