Welcome to the May edition everyone!
Well, when I asked what to do with my
time last month, who’d have thought that
some people would actually send in answers, so thank you for
those and rest assured grammar police, alterations have been
made and you can now sleep easy (or can you??) !! ;-)
I love this time of year, we have light and lots of it , bank
holidays and lots of them and lots and lots of spring cleaning
to do. I’m just in the process of gathering some old bits and
bobs together for at least one car boot and as for the garden,
well, in our case the longest project in the world but I have a
good feeling that we might actually seriously consider doing
something with it this year!!!! Apparently, mowing the lawn
is a good start or so I am told! Anyway, that’s enough about
me.
As always, we have lots of new bits and bobs going on this
month with some great events coming up. Carla, Janine and I
are looking for useful feedback on what you would like to see
in your local magazine going forward and we desperately
need more likes on facebook so that we can give away some
prizes. Now we did have some technical difficulties with the
new e-mails last month but they are resolved now, so please
e-mail us with anything that you think is a viable idea for us
to run with in the future.
Finally, we need some new distributors, so if you know
anyone that is reliable and willing to earn a bit of extra
money, give me a shout...alternatively, if you see one of us 3
out delivering…..pop the kettle on!!

Editor’s Choice This month I have been lucky enough to enjoy a fabulous hot stone massage courtesy of
Heather at Body & Sole and I wanted to recommend it to everyone! I suffer from
constant pain in my back, neck and shoulders and apparently the answer is to enjoy
more massages, so I decided to contact Heather.
Heather started with a thorough consultation of medication, allergies and any
persistent issues. She then set to work on my bespoke aromatherapy oils that would
tackle my issues. She went with clarey sage to relax the mind & body, black pepper &
ginger to warm the muscles and mandarin to complete the blend with a beautiful
fragrance.
The stones themselves are incredibly smooth and it seems bizarre to say but it really
didn’t feel like stones! They are different sizes and shapes for different areas and
Heather was certainly able to reach all those difficult deep knots without any pain or
discomfort for me.
I think that the best bit about the treatment was that it was all tailored to my needs
and the effect was immediate and lasted for about a week afterwards. In fact, with
this months fabulous offers, I think it might be time to book in again!!

Book Review - Secrecy by Rupert Thomson
Commissioned by Grand Duke Cosimo to carve a life-sized woman out of wax, the artist – Zummo in Thomson’s story - finds himself pulled into a web of deceit and slippery treachery where the ground beneath his feet is always on the move.
Thomson writes of a disturbing world full of menace where the Office of Public Decency patrols undercover to ensure everyone is behaving. Except that everyone, of course, is not. It’s a strange book, powerfully written, with a real page-turner ending. It’s something different
Florence in the late 1600s. The Medici still rule. It’s a city of forbidden knowledge and power – inevitably bound up with sex, religion and secrets.
Into this half fictional world comes a real person, Gaetano Zumbo, a man whose wax carvings look almost as real as the human beings they are modelled on. He was an artist of the 17th century who became famous for his carvings of strange subjects such as the Plague.
Author Rupert Thomson uses the figure of Zumbo as the central character for his intriguing and dark novel Secrecy which is part murder, part love story, part sinister mystery and part atmospheric description of a corrupt city in a corrupt period of history.

3.5/4.5 mile circular from South Wingfield, around Wingfield Manor
A moderate and varied walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2/2.5 hours. The route has a couple of large inclines. There are a few stretches of
road so take care. The terrain is generally good but as with all walks if it has been wet there may be muddy patches so a good pair of boots or wellies as always is
highly recommended.
A big thank you to Terry from Alfreton Ramblers club who submitted this walk. It is a fantastic route around Wingfield Manor, with some lovely views. This route has two options; a shorter walk which takes you right up by the Manor or another longer walk which gives you a great view of the manor from up on high. Enjoy!

1. Begin the walk by taking the path opposite Taylors Mill across the fields alongside the
River Amber crossing the edge of the playing field and then passing under the railway.
2. Turn right and follow the railway as it takes you beside Shaw Wood. After the wood carry on
ahead and just past the large detached house pass through a stile on your left.
3. Follow the path down the fields and through a gap in the hedge. Bear slightly left to cross a
footbridge over a brook. Bear right, to keep the hedge on your right and carry on to cross a
stile. Then head diagonally left to cross another stile onto Jacksons Lane.
4. Turn right and walk down Jacksons Lane, turning right at the junction. Walk along
Park Lane under the railway bridge and continue for approximately half a mile.
5. For the shorter route take a stile on your right
shortly after a junction on the left for Fritchley
and just before a house on the right. Follow the
path up the sides of the fields up to Wingfield
Manor. Pass the rear of the Manor down the
track, turning let at the bottom and continue until
emerging on the B5035/Manor Road. Turn right
and follow the road. Past the Yew Tree pub take
the footpath sign on the right.
6. For the extended walk carry on along Park Lane
uphill for about half a mile. Pass the first path on
your right then after the road bends left then right
take the stile on your right to walk alongside the
field.
7. At the B5035/Garner Lane turn left then cross to
take a footpath. before a newly built house. About
150 meters up the path by a small set of footpath
signs on the wall turn right to head towards the
telegraph pole and follow the path down the fields
to cross a footbridge.

8. After the bridge bear right to cross a stile and follow the path as it winds around the back of
the houses and brings you out onto the B5035/Manor road, near the Yew Tree pub. Cross the
road and take the path ahead.
9. At this point both routes re-join. After a short way turn left after the gate and follow the path
past the allotments. Bear right to cross a stile and down the steps. Turn left at the bottom then
turn right onto Parks Avenue. Next turn left on Parks Avenue and continue ahead to reach the
road. Turn right and you’re back to where you began

Carla’s Kitchen
4 eggs 1 pint of milk 120g fine breadcrumbs 230g golden caster sugar 5 tablespoons of raspberry jam
Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2. Separate 3 of the eggs and put the yolks with the remaining whole egg and beat together. Add the breadcrumbs, milk and 85g of the sugar. Spread the jam evenly on the bottom of a pie dish. Pour the egg and milk mixture over the jam and bake in the oven for 1 hour until set. Whisk the remaining 3 egg whites until stiff, then slowly mix in the remaining sugar. Pile on top of the custard and bake in the oven for a further 15-20 minutes until the meringue is lightly browned. Enjoy!

Derbyshire Police Update - Help prevent Doorstep Crime
Report any information about suspicious callers or activity to the police on 101. Always use 999 in an emergency, where you are concerned about someone’s safety or think a crime is in progress.

If you are not sure who is at the door, don’t open it. Check the identity of any caller. Confirm who they
are by calling the company they work for using number from the telephone directory or a bill.
Ask a neighbour to come around to check them before you open the door.
Tell them to come back at a time when someone will be at home with you.
Before answering the front door, make sure your back door and any windows are locked and closed.
Use the door chain every time you answer the door. If the caller is selling something or offering work
on your house or garden tell them that you are not interested and ask them to leave. Genuine, reputable firms won’t need to drum up business by cold calling.
During April, Derbyshire Police and Trading Standards officers have been running a campaign to target rogue
traders, and to raise awareness of doorstep crime.
Would you be able to spot a rogue trader? Rogue traders
are people pretending to be builders or tradespeople needing to do urgent repairs or other work. They pressurise
householders into making quick decisions, paying in
advance for materials or do poor work at highly inflated prices. They will cold call and deliberately overcharge for
unsatisfactory goods and services or unnecessary repairs.
Older adults are more at risk of bogus callers and doorstep
rogue traders. They are more likely to agree to work, or to trust people who turn up unannounced and say they are
from the council, utility, social or health services, or even the police.
It is more likely they will allow someone they have never
met into their home if they think they need help, to use
their toilet, the phone or many other excuses. They are more likely to feel isolated, embarrassed and unsure of
where to turn if they need help.
In the most serious cases, the so called workmen will
return to the same victim again and again until their savings are exhausted.

Don’t be tempted to buy lots of summer bedding and plant it out just yet – frosts still occur in late April and May. When you do put your bedding out, keep it near the house at first to protect it and if it looks like there’s going to be a cold night, a layer of horticultural fleece will help greatly.
If you’re a brave gardener who doesn’t mind plants looking a bit bare for a short while, you can try the Chelsea chop on late flowering perennials such as asters, rudbekia and heleniums which may be prone to flopping as they grow. Taking off the top third of growth now will give you much stronger plants when they come into flower later. Top tip. Don’t put your runner and French beans
out till the end of May. They’ll take off at great speed when you do, and may struggle any earlier.
Polyanthus and primulas can be lifted and divided after they’ve finished flowering to create more plants for next year. The same applies to daffodils but don’t take foliage off your early flowering bulbs till five weeks after they’ve flowered – they need it to restore their strength for next year.

A Celebration of Style at Leabrooks Arts Complex
May is a period of heightened and varied activity at Leabrooks Arts Complex, involving a range of people and events. It is a period during which artistic endeavour is high lighted and style is celebrated.
The first exhibition of the month, A Celebration of the Female Form, features the exceptional work of corsetiere, Debi Harcourt-Whiting, who has produced some beautiful garments. Forget about the flesh coloured girdles of yesteryear and think of beautiful, burlesque costumes which are both dramatic and flattering. Debi is inspired by a number of themes and uses many different kinds of fabric, natural dyes and effects all of which are described in accompanying manuals. Her work, displayed on mannequins, will be at the centre of an exhibition of paintings and drawings dedicated to the portrayal of women. She will be present throughout her Open Day on Saturday, 3rd May, 2014 to discuss and model her work. On the same day, in the morning, the Networking Artists Coffee Club will meet to exchange ideas and review the work of photographic artist, Tony
Smith, who specialises in stylish, boudoir images. In the afternoon a different art form will be offered: Kermit, from Black Grape, will be reading some of his poetry. Following this, from the 17th until the 30th May, 2014 Lynn Presland’s vibrant landscapes are displayed in the Main Exhibition Room. Her images convey the essence of summer and celebrate the infinite variety of its colours, appealing to both traditionalists and those who prefer a more impressionistic style. During the Spring Bank Holiday, 24th, 25th and 26th May, 2014, the Derbyshire Arts weekend, seven artists will be demonstrating their skills and selling their work throughout the Complex. There will be something here to please everyone: advice for those wishing to try or develop their skills in various art forms, a chance to look at art purely for pleasure or an opportunity to purchase for investment. More simply, there’s home made carrot cake and real bean coffee if you really want to spoil yourself! It’s a fitting conclusion to an exciting month.

Local web site, Amber Valley Info, is celebrating their second
birthday in style after hitting a massive milestone of 250,000 visits to the site.
Amber Valley Info is probably the number one web resource for business and community information for the Amber Valley.
The project was started around 3 years ago by Paul Curran-Bilbie after becoming frustrated with the lack of local information available online. After a year of developing the site and gathering information Amber Valley Info went live in April 2012.

Apparently, Emily’s postbag
has been requesting that I talk
about dog poo. That’s s**t,
doings, number 2, crap,
faeces, excrement to you and
me. In particular the strange
practice of cleaning up a doggies mess,
putting it in a bag and then hanging it up on a
tree, fence or just leaving it on the pavement.
Do these people think that there’s a poop bag
fairy who flies down late at night and takes
the bag away? Well there isn’t so if you own
a dog, then clear up its crap. It’s not been a
problem this year, but last winter during the
snowy periods, I noticed a lot more doggy
doings on the pavements, is there another
group of dog owner’s that think a chemical
reaction occurs when excrement meets snow?
Does it miraculously disappear? No it
doesn’t, when the snow melts we’re left with
a mush of poo. I hope that’s cleared that up.
Back to one of my favourite subjects,
television. Is it just me or do you find this
annoying, the news readers who introduce
items as diverse as the Crimea being invaded,
a plane going missing or some other terrible
event and telling you to ‘be aware that this
report may contain flash photography’. So
bloody what? The news items show maimed
bodies, starving Africans and grieving
relatives and all we’re supposed to worry
about is a flashing image. I did a bit of
research and it’s all to do with epilepsy, the
facts are that there are approx. 2,000
epileptics who suffer from photo sensitivity.
What are the chances of all of them watching
the same program at the same time????? I
also discovered that for once it’s not the TV
companies to blame but OFCOM the
regulator. Get a grip OFCOM.
It may seem I’m being a tad harsh on
epilepsy, but really, wouldn’t it be easier to
contact these sufferers and tell them to listen
to the radio at 6 o’clock, rather than the rest
of us having to listen to that slightly pompous
Huw Edwards character droning on about
flashing, night after night after night.
Where will it all end? ‘Be aware that if you
hold racist views, the next item may contain
positive images on immigration’, ‘following
is a report on irritable bowel syndrome, if
you are of a sensitive nature then please look
away now’.
Finally, honourable mentions to two of my
bestest friends. Steve Boot’s 50th birthday
came and went in March, he’d said he didn’t
want much of a fuss, and he wasn’t
disappointed. Secondly Ady Elks and a faux
pas of massive proportions, he only bought a
pork pie in one of the village pubs and then
took it to another one and asked for a knife
and plate. It was pointed out to him that the
second pub sold their own
pies and that he might have
been a bit cheeky. He went a
bit red in the face. Priceless.
