2015 District 4 Playoff Breakdown All four teams from the Evergreen 2A Conference will play in District 4 crossover games against the Greater St. Helens 2A Conference, in reverse order; the EvCo cham-pion will play the GSHL No. 4 team, and so on. Schedules for Friday, Nov. 6 are as follows (first-round state opponents in parentheses): 1. EvCo 4 at GSHL 1 (winner plays Dist. 2/3 #2) 2. GSHL 4 at EvCo 1 (winner plays Dist. 2/3 #3) 3. EvCo 3 at GSHL 2 (winner plays Dist. 1 #2) 4. GSHL 3 at EvCo 2 (winner plays Dist. 1 #1)

The game numbers represent the seeds to the State 2A playoffs, should the higher seeds win; otherwise, teams advancing to state cannot leapfrog a higher seed from their own league.

Johnson Carries Bearcats to 23-8 Swamp Cup WinBy The Chronicle

The Tigers’ objective, heading into the 107th incarnation of the Battle of the Swamp, was to contain Elijah Johnson. The rain, dumping onto the Tiger Stadi-um turf throughout the game, was sup-posed to help by making the Bearcats’ junior signal-caller one-dimensional. The rain inhibited the passing game, but it didn’t slow down Johnson and the W.F. West offense in a 23-8 Evergreen 2A Conference win over rival Centralia. Johnson ran for 104 yards and scored all of his three touchdowns in the second quarter, putting Centralia in a 20-0 half-time hole from which it couldn’t climb out. “It’s simple. There was no contain-ing Elijah Johnson,” Centralia coach Matt Whitmire said. “It’s not a joke. He’s probably the second- or third-best run-ning back in the league, and he happens to play quarterback. He was the deciding factor in this football game.”

The win ensures second place in the Evergreen 2A Conference for W.F. West, and seals a crossover game against the No. 2 team out of the Greater St. Helens 2A Conference for a berth in the State 2A playoffs — along with local brag-ging rights that come with running the winning streak against Centralia to six games. “People were saying we weren’t going to win, basically, and it’s just really cool to come out here and show them we’re a good team,” Bearcat senior Eric Braun said. “Just because we lost a lot of seniors last year, we’re still a good team, and we can still play.” The teams both punted on fumble-hindered opening drives, and Centralia's second drive progressed to the Bearcat 21-yard line before it ended on a lost fumble. Johnson carried the ball six times on the Bearcats' next drive, which spanned seven plays and 56 yards and wrapped up with an 11-yard run by the quarterback. Forty-two seconds later he was back in the end zone, after the Tigers bobbled the kickoff — twice — and the Bearcats recovered it a yard from the end zone,

needing just two plays for Johnson to dart back in. “The bang-bang quick scores, the spe-cial teams scores — they’re so dramatic, and they’re game-changers,” Bearcat coach Bob Wollan said. “I think that re-ally caught Centralia off guard, and we really just played well offensively.” Johnson’s increased workload cer-tainly helped. “It’s always in the bank. It’s a league game, it’s a big game, and we try not to get him hit a whole lot in nonleague and be smarter about that,” Wollan said. “But these kind of games, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to win it.” Not that Johnson, who had 90 rush-ing yards in the first half, minded the work. “It’s awesome. I love running,” he said. “I was seeing the holes really well today, and it was fun to run.” W.F. West kicked off, forced a turn-over on downs, and marched 43 yards in 11 plays — covering six minutes — and took a 20-0 lead on Johnson's third touchdown, with 2 minutes, 39 seconds left in the first half.

BeaRcaT OffeNSIve LeaDeRS Player to Watch Trevor Magnan, Tight End (#14)SEnioR Trevor Magnan has settled into a nice, big role with the Bearcats.“He’s a true program kid,” Wollan said of Magnan, a JV player with a few varsity special teams appearanc-es last season. “Right now, between offense and defense, he’s a 90-per-cent-of-the-game on the field (guy). He’s given us a reliable threat at tight end, and H-back. He’s caught every-thing that’s been thrown at him and done a fabulous job as a blocker.”

COACHES ON W.F. WEST QB ELIJAH JOHNSON JohnSon, a senior, was an All-League first-team pick at quarterback last season. “There are some offenses where the quarterback’s job is just to hand it off, and in our of-fense that’s not the case,” Bearcat coach Bob Wollan said. “There’s a certain element of tough-ness you’ve got to possess to be a quarterback for us, and he certainly possesses all the quali-ties he needs to be successful there. At any given time, he can take a pretty average play and make it a special play.” “It’s about our quarterback, and he’s going to make the other people in our offense better,” Wollan said.

“LaST yEaR in the first half we did not contain him, and by the time we got around to it it was too late,” Centralia coach Matt Whitmire said. “We will need to contain him for four quarters during that game, or probably score 42 points in order to have a shot at beating those guys.” “Elijah’s carries increase as the season goes on. (Bob Wollan) knows not to expose him early on, but as we get into weeks 8 and 9 Elijah’s going to carry the ball 20-25 times (a game),” Whit-mire added. “He’s an outstanding competitor, and you can tell he’s been so well-coached for four years in that program,” Whitmire said. “Bob continues to do an outstanding job of developing his quarterback based on their individual strengths.”

W.F. WEST’S DEFEnSE has held opponents under 20 points a game this season on its way to a 4-3 team record.

“They don’t make mistakes. I can’t single any particular kid out, but if you watch them in film, it’s a unit that’s continued to improve every week,” Cen-tralia coach Matt Whitmire said. “But what’s even more concern-ing is they’re very opportunistic. They’re capable of making you turn the ball over.”

Player to Watch:Roberto alvarenga

Defensive Tackle (#69)

Six-FooT, 320-pound senior Roberto Alvarenga found his

way into the lineup late last season on the defensive line,

and has become a staple of the Bearcat defense.

“I think he’s just kind of had the time of his life,” Wollan

said. “He has been a real solid contributor all year long, but

the last couple weeks, he’s played extremely well. More importantly, he’s assumed a

leadership role on our team.”

Centralia’s defensive backs have tallied seven interceptions in six games this season, including four in Week 7 against Bremerton.

“I think that’s a pretty athletic group of guys,” W.F. West coach Bob Wollan said of Centralia’s secondary, which includes starters Nolan Was-son (CB), Nathan Yahn (CB), Joey Aliff (S) and Cody Parker (S). “They’ve got some athleticism back there, and some size, for sure. The guys they have back there afford them the luxury to be pretty aggressive on their front. I think it’s important for us to take some shots at them, but we’ve got to pick them right.”

Player to Watch: Derek VanDeLaarschot inside Linebacker (#12)

ThE SEnioR inside linebacker has been a bright spot for the Tigers

this season. “He’s one of those kids that is

a little undersized (5-11, 185) to play on the inside, but makes up

for it with his tenacity and the size of his heart. He’s really kind

of the heart and soul, and the type of kid that we want in Tiger

football,” Centralia coach Matt Whitmire said.

VanDeLaarschot played a small amount of varsity football in 2014, but jumped right in and

contributed immediately this season.

“He has not disappointed us at all,” Whitmire said. “He’s prob-ably one of the top two or three

instinctual kids on the football team. He shows up with his lunch pail every day at practice. It’s just

a privilege to coach him.”

PRiDE & PoSiTioning: Winner Has Inside Track to Higher District Crossover SeedBy aaron VanTuyl

[email protected]

On one hand, the only thing on the line is playoff seeding. On the other hand, it’s a game that can make or break a season. The 108th-annual Battle of the Swamp, set to kick off at 7 p.m. Friday night at Chehalis’ Bearcat Stadium, brings together crosstown and Ever-green 2A Conference rivals in the pen-ultimate game of what’s been a strange regular season. For the Tigers, the ups and downs have included a season-opening loss, a big shootout win over 3A Columbia River, a cancelled game, a blowout at the hands of powerhouse Tumwater, a laundry list of injuries and, last week, a much-needed nonleague win over a Bremerton team that’s been in the news more for an assistant coach’s postgame

prayers than anything on the field. “It’s been one of ups and downs, which is surprising, because we thought we’d be a little more consistent,” Centra-lia coach Matt Whitmire said. “But we get to choose whether or not we’re con-sistent to close this thing out.” As W.F. West coach Bob Wollan pointed out, it’s been a weird year for the Tigers, who stand at 3-3 heading into Week 8. “I’m sure losing to Rochester (in Week 1) didn’t sit too well, and about the time you count them out, they come back and win this giant game against Columbia River,” Wollan said. “I’m just going, ‘Wow, what a credit to their coaches and team to hang in there and stay together.’ I think what it tells me is there’s this big pile of potential in there, and it’s waiting to happen for those teams that aren’t prepared or not ready.” The Bearcats, meanwhile, have been immersed in a particularly tough sched-ule and have emerged with a 4-3 record. Four of W.F. West’s first six games came against teams with perfect records:

North Kitsap (1-0), Olympic (3-0), Black Hills (4-0) and Kelso (5-0). The Bearcats beat North Kitsap, managed to score the first points of the year on Olympic, lost by 3 to Black Hills and thumped 3A Kel-so. Injuries have sidelined a host of key players for various stretches, and star wide receiver Brody Holcomb and mas-sive lineman Hunter Arredondo have been lost for the season. “There’s a certain level of luck that’s involved with staying healthy,” Wollan said. “I know we trained as hard as we could to stay healthy, and things just didn’t fall our way, injury-wise, but we’re getting some kids back now.” The silver lining in those injuries, however, has been the experience grant-ed to younger players put on the field. “It’s solidifying,” Wollan said. “We’ve created depth, and the kids have gained experience in a trial-by-fire situation.”

PoSiTioning: This year’s rivalry game pits two teams with 0-1 league records — with the strange caveat that both losses have come to undefeated, state-ranked

EvCo opponents — in a fight for playoff positioning. As the Bearcats close the regular sea-son with Tumwater, and the Tigers close things out with Black Hills, the general consensus is that Friday’s game will de-termine the No. 3 and No. 4 crossover seeds out of the Evergreen 2A Confer-ence. With Hockinson (7-0, ranked No. 6) sitting atop the Greater St. Helens 2A League standings, the difference be-tween a 3- and 4-seed could be big and only adds to the intrigue of the annual bragging-rights game. “It makes our season. We knew all along that our entire season, despite what happens in the first six weeks, would depend on what happens in weeks 7-9,” Whitmire said. “But, obvi-ously, winning that game would clinch a spot that’s higher than the 4-seed.”

PRiDE: The Bearcats have won every Swamp Cup since 2009, something of which Whitmire was made painfully

aware when he took over the program in April of 2013. On paper, this year the Bearcats, again, are the favorite. The only common opponent between the teams is Kelso, which shut out the Tigers, 13-0, before losing 30-12 to W.F. West. “W.F. West is going into the last third of the season where you think they’re go-ing to be every season,” Whitmire said. “They’re competing in the upper part of the league for great seed heading into the crossover. We’re playing the role of the underdog once again.” For the Bearcats, however, Friday night is more about making a senior year than pushing a string to seven games. “If you’re a group of seniors, this is your game, and I don’t think it changes from year to year,” Wollan said. “I don’t think our seniors could care about a streak. They want to be 1-0 their senior year, and I think that goes for kids at both schools.” The favored team, he pointed out,

hasn’t always had an easy time of things. Back in 2011 the Tigers (5-4) took W.F. West to overtime; the Bearcats went on to the State 2A semifinals. “Last year, when we played, I’m not sure if we were the better team, but it just kind of went our way,” he said. “I think it’s like all the other games we’ve played — it’s going to be tough,” Wollan added. “If either side looks past the other one, or thinks they have an ad-vantage, that’s probably the team that’s going to lose.”

PICA’S BREWS

a game-by-game Recap of Centralia’s Season ... So Far

WEEK 1: Centralia opened the season with something of a thud, losing 17-7 to Rochester in a non-league affair. Joey Aliff hit Riley Christensen with a 31-yard pass for the Tigers’ lone touchdown, and Nathan Yahn ran eight times for 67 yards for Centralia.

WEEK 2: The Tigers found their first win in Grays Harbor, beat-ing Aberdeen 10-9. Nathan Yahn scored Centralia’s lone touchdown in the second quarter, and Aber-deen scored in the fourth quarter but missed the point-after kick. Joey Aliff completed 11 of 20 pass-es for 130 yards, with Nolan Was-

son catching eight for 96 yards.

WEEK 3: The Tigers filled their of-fensive potential in a 41-40 shoot-out win over 3A Columbia River, with Nathan Yahn running in the conversion on a last-minute touch-down to seal the win.

“That’s the type of win you can build a program on,” Centralia coach Matt Whitmire said. “There were lots of happy faces tonight.”

Dylan Ferrians ran 19 times for 118 yards, while Yahn finished with 145 yards on 17 carries. Josh Towle and Ferrians scored the Ti-gers’ final two touchdowns to rally from a 40-27 deficit in the fourth quarter.

WEEK 4: Kelso blanked the Tigers,

13-0, in Cowlitz County, despite solid games from quarterback Joey Aliff and receiver Nolan Wasson. Aliff completed 10 of 19 passes for 135 yards, with six going to Wasson for 82 yards. Centralia, however, only managed 18 rush-ing yards in the loss to the then-undefeated Hilanders.

WEEK 5: The Tigers’ homecoming game with Sequim was cancelled after a school lockdown threw a wrench into all activities at Centra-lia High School.

WEEK 6: Centralia ran into a buzz-saw in top-ranked, undefeated Tumwater in a 49-6 loss. A vaunted Thunderbird defense held the Ti-gers to 164 yards of offense, and

Centralia’s lone touchdown came on a fourth-quarter 13-yard pass from Joey Aliff to Nolan Wasson in the end zone.

WEEK 7: Centralia’s defensive backs picked off four passes in a 29-21 win over Bremerton on the road. Joey Aliff hit on 11 of 18 passes for 210 yards and ran for 58 yards, and slotback Nathan Yahn ran for 56 yards as the Tigers pulled their record to 3-3.

“We put the clamps on them all night long and it was really a good effort by the kids on the line,” Cen-tralia coach Matt Whitmire said. “They tried to come right at us but our kids stepped up and played very physical.”

a game-by-game Recap of Centralia’s Season ... So Far

WEEK 1: W.F. West found a spark after a sluggish first half to beat Kingston, 14-3, in their season de-but. Austin Emery ran for 112 yards on 11 carries, and Elijah Johnson ran in one touchdown and passed to Brody Holcomb for another.

WEEK 2: The Bearcat defense came up big in a tight 10-3 win over North Kitsap, with Elijah Johnson throwing a 26-yard pass to Brody Holcomb in the third quarter for the game’s only touchdown. Johnson finished the game with 111 passing yards (11 of 19), and had two touchdowns called back on penalties. Cory Davis knocked through a 25-yard field goal with five minutes left in the

game to give W.F. West its final lead.

WEEK 3: West Valley (Yakima) ham-mered an ailing Bearcat squad, 42-7.

“We just kind of got overwhelmed here today defensively,” W.F. West coach Bob Wollan said. “We gave up too many big plays over the top.”

The Rams led 35-0 and passed for 271 yards in the win, while W.F. West’s lone touchdown came on a 5-yard run from Austin Emery. Em-ery finished with 121 rushing yards on 16 carries.

WEEK 4: The Bearcats broke Olym-pic’s scoreless streak, but couldn’t do much more in a 21-6 home loss. The Trojans’ massive line kept the Bearcats relatively in check after a first-drive touchdown by Elijah Johnson. Johnson wound up com-

pleting 11 of 20 passes for 105 yards.

WEEK 5: The first Evergreen 2A Conference football game of the season was an exciting one, with Black Hills taking advantage of a few turnovers to edge W.F. West 24-21. Elijah Johnson, Nathan Anglin and Austin Emery all scored rushing touchdowns, with Johnson finishing with 90 yards on the ground.

WEEK 6: Elijah Johnson ran in three touchdowns and W.F. West handed 3A Kelso its first loss of the season, 30-12.

“We did a lot of really good job things as a group,” coach Bob Wollan said. “We played well in all phases of the game: special teams, defense and offense. Our offensive line really asserted themselves

and we were physical running the football.”

The Bearcats ran for 200 yards, with Johnson tallying 98 yards and Austin Emery picking up 72 yards.

WEEK 7: The Bearcats beat another bigger opponent, this time 3A Prai-rie, 35-24 on the road. Elijah John-son passed for three touchdowns and ran in another score, while Aus-tin Emery and Tanner Morang each added rushing touchdowns.

“The defense really was the story to start the game for us,” W.F. West coach Bob Wollan said. “It was a little bit scary at first as we tried to feel them out but the defense really set the tone with a lot of heart and made great plays.”
