In short ,the story is about MOHAN BHARGAV ( Shahrukh Khan),a successful NASA employee and NRI ,returning to his country on a mini mission of finding his nanny Kaveri amma(KishoriBallal) ,and in this trip he gets to visit the real depths Indai. In this village he encounters Geeta (Gayatri Joshi), a strong willed and determined school teacher.Along with her,he also encounters the issues in the village, which he had never considered more deeply than this. The story proceeds as Mohan tries to use his intellect in trying to solve some of those issues in this village..

While Mohan soon adapts to life in the village and endears himself to its people,he also encounters some of its harsher aspects.Among them are proverty, caste discrimination, child marriage, illiteracy, child labour , a general disregard for education and apathy to change. He tries in his own way to bring about some change , even succeeding to the point of dissuading the village elders from moving the local school to smaller and far-away premises. In doing this, he earns the respect of Gita (Gayatri Joshi) ,achildhood acquaintance who lives with KaveriAmma and runs the local school.

One day Kaveri Amma sends him to village called Kodi to collect due from a farmer named Haridas who has rented their land. Along the way, Mohan realizes that the problems he had seen in the village mirror those faced by almost all other villages in the country.Haridas, the farmer who owes rent, has no money to feed his own family , mainly because the villagers would not support his attempts at a change of accupation from weaving to farming . Mohan returns empty handed, but is full of a new sensitivity and perspective towords the harsh realities of rural India. This journey to Kodi and back proves to be the turning point in Mohans life and he comes back with a resolve to improve the quality of life of the villagers.

By then, its time for him to leave as his project at NASA is nearing is final stage.KaveriAmma, whom he had intended to take along with him, refuse to come citing the difficulty of adapting to a new culture at such a late stage in her life .Gita , whom he had fallen in love with and who had fallen in love with him , also refuse to come with him, wanting to remain in the country and continue running the school that her parents had founded. He returns alone but feels a growing sense of responsibility towards his country and guilt for not being able to do much for the welfare of its people. He finishes his project at NASA before resigning and returning to India.

CLIMAX Shahrukh enlists the support of a few hundred men and guides them through the building of a reservoir beneath a perennial spring on a nearby hill. Buying turbines and other equipment with his own money , he sets up a small hydro-electric power plant that would solve the problem of irregular electricity and make the village self-sufficient

HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANTSTAR CAST1.ASHUTOSH GOWARIKER : He once again produces a unique story and brings up some thought-provoking issues. The way he handles the sensitive issues is brilliant issues is brilliant and really gives an insight to the intellect of the man himself. There are many scenes where in the ideas presented in a movie actually make you realise the realities of life watching an adaptation of life. Its not easy to escape from escapist cinema, and it surely must not feel good to defy feel-good cinema so bluntly. In spite of that , if someone has the courage to present a story and ideas like this, it is definitely commendable

DIRECTOR2.SHAHRUKH KHAN: Never more has this actor looked more like the character and less like the star ! After almost a decade of watching his films, this is one of the very few times when I forgot I was watching THE SHAHRUKH KHAN and solely watching Mohan , the character. This certainly goes in the list of best performances ever!! 3.GAYATRI JOSHI: For a debutante performance, playing the character of GEETA with so much conviction and confidence is really commendable! She looks fresh and presents the determined Geetas character beautifully. There is some scope for improvement of refining her expressions, but other than that ,she was Fine.

.KISHORI BALLAL: The role of Kaveriamma was tailor made for this lady.! I cant picture anyone else doing it at all. She was adorable.!

COMMENTS ON ACTORSKhans performance as Mohan Bhargava is considered to be one of his best by many.MayankShekhar from MiD Day gave 4 stars and called it bravo! and I cannot think of a better for the longest that deserved a stronger recommendation for both touring cinemas of Indias villages, and plush multiplexes of Mumbai or Manhattan. JiteshPillai of the Sunday Times India gave 4 stars and said After Lagaan, what? The answers blowing in the wind. Swades heres the verdict: This is a gusty and outstandingfilm.Welcome back to real, soild film making. He added Swades is undoubtedly the No 1 Movie of the year. ShradhaSukumaran of Mid Day gave 3.5 stars and said At the end of it, Swades is a far braver film than Lagaan.

Effective scenes1.The child selling water on the railway platform there arent any dialogues at all in this scene , but silence speaks louder than any words could ever do. Heart wrenching sequence.!2. The poor farmer explaining his problem to Mohan One thing that really struck me about this scene , is the subtlety with which the culture of our country is presented. The farmer is poor and cannot afford to even pay his rent , but still when a guest enters his home , he fells honoured to be able to offer him at least a simple meal.BrillantAll scenes when Mohan returns to the US and realizes he really belongs to his own country.

Type of communication In this film there is a song YE TARA WOH TARA wherein SHAHRUKH tries to address the audience by showing the stars in the sky. He indirectly wants to say that even we people like the stars in the sky and if we people come toghether we make the sky i.e the world look beautiful. The type of communication involved is verbal communication where SHAHRUKH expresses his feelings and sentiments through the song.

Verbal communicationChange of climax In the film when SHAHRUKH realizes the attrocities faced by the villagers he feels sad for them and tries to help them out. So he plans to set up a hydroelectric power plant for lighting up the houses of many villagers. So he arranges for the material required but due to financial problems and lack of support from the villagers his plan of setting up the plan fails. thus he could not fulfill his mission and returns back to NASA.MESSAGEThere are mant scenes where in the ideas presented in a movie actually make you realize the realities of life watching an adaptation of life. Its not easy to escape from escapist cinema, and it surely must not feel good to defy feel-good cinema so bluntly. In spite of that , if someone has the courage to present a story and ideas like this, it is definitely commendable. On top of that , if the ideas are displayed to beautifully that they leave such an impact, theres even more reason to compliment the maker . some scenes in this movie really touch your heart enough to either break out a smile or being tears to your eyes. With its gentle humour , the film acts as an entertaining vehicle for social change. Only the boldest of filmmakers can make a mainstream movie where the climax is not about saving the country from terrorists or uniting desperate lovers but getting electricity to a north Indian village.
