    Research shows alack of technical

    skills in industries

    RESEARCH carried out bythe University of SouthWales into theneedsoflocal industry in materialsand advancedengineeringsectorhas revealeda lackof technical expertise.

    Thesurvey, carried outbytheA4B funded MAeKES pro-ject, found that graduatesandotherjob seekersare notableto fulfill companyrequirements.

    In Wales,the mostfrequent-ly identifiedmissingexper-tisewas electronics/hard-ware engineering.

    Other areasemphasised bymorethan one companyincludedmechanical engi-

    neers, lasersystems, chemi-calengineersand materialsscientists.

    TheMAeKESprojectpart-nering withCardiff andSwansea universitiesaims tobuild collaborations withbusinessand industryto sup-portknowledge exchangeandpromotethe industriali-sation of Welsh universitycourses.

    Theresearchalso gavedetails of driversof Welsh

    firms to innovatethroughcollaborative projects.

    Whencompared to the restof UK,Welshbusinesseswerevery muchmore con-cernedwith efficienciesandcostsavingwhereasthe restof the UKwas more focusedon competitiveness andbeinga marketleader.

    Report highlights skills gap in engineering in Wales

    Building societys asset milestoneNEWPORT-BASED Monmouthshire BuildingSociety, one of Wales largest and most suc-cessful financial institutions, has recentlyachieved a major financial milestone 1bn inassets.

    This is a highly significant landmark withinthe societys history, and is the culmination of145 years of effort, dedication and achieve-ment for all the societys staff, both past andpresent.

    To mark this momentous occasion, the socie-ty will be giving back to the wider local com-munity through some unique and excitingfunding projects.

    For the first stage of the celebrations, it haslaunched the Community Acorn Fund to giveback to community groups and projectsthroughout the local geographical area.

    A 25,000 funding pool has been allocated

    across the societys branch and agency net-work, and local community groups are invitedto apply for funding. The deadline for applica-tions is September 30, 2014, and more infor-mation is available at monbs.com/acornfund.

    The second stage of the celebrations is theLasting Legacies project which covers areasacross a wide spectrum of society includinghealth, children, the environment, homeless-ness and sport.

    The society is working in close collaborationwith a number of local and national bodies tofund projects of great, lasting need. Details ofthe specific projects will be announced overthe coming months.
