Aspartof that wecarryoutregularsurveys of ourmembersto discoverthings likehow confidentthey are, whetherprofitabilityis improvingandwhether they aretakingon staff.
Werecently publishedthe latestresults of oursurveyworkin ourWales Voiceof Small BusinessIndexfor thethird quarter of this year.
Perhaps themost interestingthingtocomeout of thelatestquarterlysurvey wasthatourmembersinWales aremore likely to be planningcapital spendingthan at anytimesincethe indexbeganbackat thebeginningof 2010.
Whetherit is a Newport manufac-turerinvestingin a newmachine, aCaerphillytradesman buying a newvan, ora Cwmbran cafe buyinganewcoffee machine,it isclearthatbusinesseshere are nowbeginningto makereal investment for thefuture.
That is a positivesign, andthatinvestment should feedthroughintothe order books of other businessesthatprovide thosemachines andvans, which should, inturn, helptosupport further economicgrowth.
Butdespitethe positive signsofinvestment thereare stillmany busi-nessesin SouthEastWales thatremain cautiousover theshort-termoutlook.
While businessconfidence remainspositivein Walesit is stillsomewaybehindtherestof theUK.
However, thefact thatsmall compa-niesare investingat allis especiallywelcome whenyou considerthatraising finance remains a particularchallengefor businesseshere inWales.
If wecan find waysto improveaccessto finance inWales then whois tosay that businesseswouldnot beeven moreintent on investment inthe future.
