Welsh workers have one of the country’slowest levels for wellbeing provisionONLY a quarter of Welsh employ-ees benefit from wellbeing provi-sion from their employers, newresearch has revealed.

It ranked among the UK’s lowestregions in the study conducted byPMI Health Group.

Only the North West fared worse,where just 24 per cent of staffclaimed their employers make pro-vision to look after their wellbeing.

London came out on top, with 46per cent of staff in the capital ben-efitting from wellbeing provision.

“The geographical variation inhealthcare provision demonstratesa clear divide between Londonand the rest of the UK in attitudestowards staff health,” said MikeBlake, director at PMI HealthGroup.

“This could be explained by a

higher concentration of largecorporate employers in GreaterLondon which may have more re-sources for wellbeing programmes.

“But, given ongoing cuts to theNHS, there will be an increasedonus on all employers to fill thegap in healthcare provision inorder to limit the damaging impactof sickness absence and safeguardemployee wellbeing.”

The study also found 81 per centof Welsh employees claim they arenot encouraged by their employersto participate in voluntary healthand wellbeing activities, such ascycle to work schemes.

This figure is among the highestin the UK, following closely behindScotland and Yorkshire (both 82per cent).

Once more, the best result came

from London, where only 68 percent of staff said their employersdid not encourage them to takepart in health and wellbeing activi-ties.

Mike added: “The idea thatemployers must play a key role inemployees’ overall wellbeing isstill new to many companies andthis is reflected in the results ofthe study.

“Although the onus is shifting,employers are still unsure howbest to address the issue.

“But health initiatives needn’t becomplicated or expensive – hybridhealth policies, simple wellbe-ing programmes and low-cost,high-value schemes such as cashplans can offer affordable tools tohelp improve employee health andreduce sickness absence.”
