Small businesses show renewed interein training staff, nds employee surveyStaff training is moving up the agenda foremployers running SMEs as the economyimproves, according to new research.
The Personal Development in the WorkplaceStudy 2014, which polled 1,000 employeesworking at SMEs, found that 58 per cent ofrespondents felt that their employer wastaking their personal development seriously,
up from 52 per cent recorded in the same pollconducted 12 months ago.The number of employees given a struc-
tured personal development plan has alsoincreased, up eight per cent year-on-year to 42per cent, the study results showed.
In last years study, 48 per cent of respond-ents said they did not feel that their employertook their personal development seriouslybut this has now fallen to 42 per cent.
But this still means that more than two-fifths of SME staff currently feel underval-ued and disenfranchised in some way.
Last year 66 per cent of respondents saidthey didnt have a current personal devel-
opment plan, which researchers flaggedas a concern because these goals form anintrinsic part of keeping staff motivated andengaged.
However, this year that number has fallento 58 per cent, which researchers said showshow employers are increasingly dedicatingmore time and resource to providing staff
with structured personal development planswhich will no doubt help to improve theirengagement and motivation.
SMEs are also talking about personal devel-opment more frequently with employees thanthey did a year ago.
Although the increase in employees report-ing this is slight, rising from 34 to 35 per cent,many are reporting that they have discussedtheir personal development with their em-ployer in the last six months.
However,this meansthat 65 percent havent
discussed their personal development inmore than six months.
Further results show that men have nowovertaken women as the most engaged staffin the workplace.
Last year the gender split across all ques-tions in the survey revealed that woman feelmore engaged than their male counterparts,
discuss their personal development morefrequently and are more likely to have a per-sonal development plan in place.
But this year the number of men who saidfeel that their personal development is impor-tant to their employer has risen 11 per centyear on year to 61 per cent, compared with 54per cent of women.
More than two-fifths (42 per cent) of mennow have a personal development plan com-pared with 39 per cent of women.
Jonathan Richards, chief execusoftware firm breatheHR, who comthe study, said: As a small businemyself Im acutely aware of the tsions that frequently present themespecially during times of recessicial instabi lity.
While cutting back on personal

Credit Controller SupervisorA vacancy has arisen in our busy credit control department at NewsquestWales & Gloucestershire based at the South Wales Argus, Newport.
The Successful applicant should be able to work under pressure towardsmonthly targets and strict deadlines.
Manage a team of Credit Controllers.
Deal with customer queries and be able to follow themthrough to completion.
Communicating with customers in writing, by telephone andsometimes face to face.
Must be computer literate.
Previous credit control experience essential.

We are currently seeking a full time Motors Field Sales representative
The Role
Working towards an individual sales target you will be expected to be
resourceful and self motivated. Sourcing and canvassing new clients to
introduce to our portfolio and in-turn being proactive and creative in finding
solutions to their advertising and marketing needs. This will run in sync with
the ongoing management of existing, established clients, ensuring they are
receiving the best possible value from our product portfolio.
The Person
As a Motors Field Sales Representative you will need to be self motivated
and driven towards achieving revenue targets. Confidence in working under
your own initiative is essential, although there will be occasions that you are
required to work on team projects.
Time management is key to this role, along with being able to adhere to
rigid deadlines. Previous sales and/or customer service experience could be
advantageous, although this is not an essential requirement as a comprehensive
training programme is in place.
