Nearly half of all office workers admit today-dreaming during meetings at workOFFICE staff who have meetings atwork, hold, on average, three meet-ings per day, lasting over an hour intotal, according to a study by Radis-son Blu Hotels.This is the equivalent to more thanten million man hours each dayspent in meetings in offices up anddown the country.In extreme cases, some individu-als attend more than ten meetingsper day or say they spend more thanthree hours each day in meetings.While many businesses see meet-ings as integral to the success oftheir organisation, the study sug-gests workers are not as engaged asperhaps they could be.Of those questioned, 27 per cent
found the meetings that they attendto be average, while a further 15per cent went one step further andlabelled their meetings bad or verybad and a completely ineffective useof their time.The top three reasons given formeetings being ineffective were: noclear agenda (66 per cent); poorlymanaged (50 per cent); and uncom-fortable furniture (11 per cent).Other grumbles including poorroom layout (10 per cent) and lack ofrefreshments (seven per cent).Nearly half of office workers (47per cent) admitted to daydreamingduring a meeting, with 37 per centadmitting to missing a key point asa result.
Nearly a fifth of attendees (19per cent) have found themselvesdistractedly looking at their phone,while one in ten has actually evenfallen asleep (11 per cent) or playeda game to amuse themselves (nineper cent).Steve Manfield, area director, mar-keting UK and Ireland for RadissonBlu said: “The UKs meeting indus-try generated £5.6 billion for theeconomy in 2013, therefore it’s im-portant that meetings are designedto be as productive as possible.“Our study shows that people canoften get quickly distracted andphase out during poorly plannedand frequent work-based meetingsin the office.”
