    1 About this CD

    This CD contains the contents of ScienceWorld 9 for NSWas Adobe Reader Portable DocumentFormat (PDF) files, which are designed for viewing onscreen. 11 PDFs are supplied. Each PDF isnamed according to its chapter number.

    The CD also contains:

    a number of Adobe Flash files

    a number of Crossword Wizard files

    Word files containing ICT skill support

    Networking: This CD is a Shared Network Resource. This means that the PDF files can be copiedonto a network server (under the Licence: Conditions of Use), and thus be used over a network, bycomputers on the network that have Adobe Reader 9.0 or above installed.

    2 About Adobe Reader

    Adobe Reader is available free of charge from Adobe website at www.adobe.com.

    This site also gives technical information about the software, and assistance with using it.

    Note that as Adobe Reader is freely available, you can copy the application from any computer onwhich it is installed to any other computer, including students own computers.

    3 How to use this CD

    3.1 Opening the PDF files

    To open a PDF file, with the CD in the CD disk drive, open the drives window and double-click onthe PDF file icon (assuming you have Adobe Reader installed on your computer).

    Alternatively, and especially if double-clicking the icon fails to open the file, start Adobe Reader,following the commands in your operating system for running an application. Then:

    click on Open in the File menu

    in your CD drive, locate and select the file you want to open

    click Open and away you go.

    To copy the PDF files from the CD onto your hard disk (under the Licence: Conditions of Use):

    i The CD must be in the CD drive.

    ii Decide where you want to locate the copy on your hard disk. Its advisable to create anew folder (directory) for it in your hard disk (c:\).

    iii Drag and drop the PDF file icon from the CD drive to the desired location, or use the

    Copy command in your operating systems file management application.

    iv Remove the CD and store it in a safe place as a back-up.

    v Double-click on the PDF file on your hard disk to open the file, or use the alternativemethod described above.

    vi You are now ready to use the files.

    3.2 Using Abode Reader

    The Adobe Reader Help in the Help menu gives an overview of using Adobe Reader.

    If you rest the cursor on the toolbar buttons at the top of the screen, a label describing their functionswill appear. (You may need to turn this function on first. In Windows, for instance, you need to turnon the Show Balloons option in the Help menu).

    For optimum viewing onscreen, select Fit Page Width in the view menu, or the appropriate button onthe toolbar. If any fonts or fine detail are too small to read comfortably, change the magnificationusing the zoom buttons or the same commands in the Tool menu.

    3.3 Crossword Wizard Player

    You must install the above player before you can use the crossword files. A free player is located onthis CD (open the player folder) or is available from www.crosswordwizard.com.au/downloads.htm inboth Windows and Macintosh platforms.

    Microsoft Windows XP or aboveMac OS X or aboveAdobe Reader 9.0 or above

    5 Troubleshooting

    We have created the files on this CD and checked them in the software described above. In case ofany problems arising in opening the files (see section 3.2), or of viewing them correctly onscreen, you

    should in the first instance check the onscreen help, manuals or technical support for Adobe Reader,for your printer or platform.

    If the problem is associated with using the CD on a network, consult your network administrator torule out networking problems.

    If you can not resolve the problem through these sources of help, even though you have theappropriate software application, please send an email to [email protected],detailing the nature of the problem and the hardware/software you are using.
