SVP-Barometer Drifter Performance

• One of the first manufacturers of satellite-tracked Lagrangian drifting buoys (began in 1983)

Technocean, Inc.

• Early participant in the construction of SVP and SVP-B drifters

• Currently involved in the design and construction of various drifting buoy types integrating environmental sensors and GPS with Argos

• Evaluate historical SVP longevity

• Evaluate SVP-Barometer longevity (in terms of AP data on GTS)

• Observe SVP-Barometer AP data quality (in terms of RMS from GTS statistics)

• Compare Technocean and other commercial SVP-Bs

SVP-Barometer Drifter Performance

• For all SVPs, operating life has improved ≈15% to 30% between older and newer generations of buoys (for 12 and 24-month periods, respectively) while buoy costs have come down significantly

• Technocean buoys operated significantly longer than other manufacturers translating to a lower cost per unit of data

• Technocean has improved buoy performance over time

• Technocean SVP-Bs stay on the GTS longer

• Since 2000, Technocean AP data quality has been consistent
