How to reduce home improvement project waste.

The home improvement

industry has grown

considerably over the

last several decades, as

homeowners increasingly

took steps to turn their

homes into personal

oases. But such projects

often produce substantial

amoun t s o f was t e ,

negatively impacting the

environment as a result.

According to the United

States Environmental

Protection Agency, an

estimated 170 million tons

of building construction,

r e n o v a t i o n a n d

demolition-derived wastes

were generated in 2003,

a year when the housing

market was thriving and

homeowners were not

shying away from costly

h o m e i m p r o v e m e n t

projects. With the housing

market once again on

the rebound, the home

improvement industry

figures to benefit once

again. There are steps eco-

conscious homeowners

can take to reduce waste

while improving their

homes.

* Save sa lvageable

m a t e r i a l s . S o m e

materials simply must be

discarded when making

improvements to a home.

But many more materials

can be salvaged. When

mak ing r enova t ions

to a home, separate

materials like lumber,

hardware, fixtures, and

even appliances that

can be salvaged from

those materials that must

be discarded. Many

communities are home to

organizations that collect

salvageable materials,

and these materials can

be reused by fellow

homeowners or other

organizations down the

road.

* Speak to contractors

a b o u t r e c y c l i n g .

Contractors working on

a home typically know

which materials can

be recycled in a given

area. When discussing

prospective projects with

contractors, homeowners

c a n m e n t i o n t h e i r

willingness to recycle

materials. Wood is a

versatile material that can

be turned into reclaimed or

composite wood products,

including decks or other

items used around the

home. Old wood being

removed from a home

may even work as mulch,

which homeowners can

spread around their yards

to add aesthetic appeal

and protect plants on

hot summer days. Even

asphalt and concrete can

be recycled into new

products, and homeowners

should discuss their

wishes to recycle as many

materials as possible.

* Choose recycled content

b u i l d i n g m a t e r i a l s .

Another way to reduce

h o m e i m p r o v e m e n t

project waste is to make

use of other homeowners’

d iscarded mater ia ls .

Recycled content building

materials are products

that include materials

recycled from previous

projects. These once-

sparse materials are

n o w c o m m o n p l a c e ,

and labels often include

the pe rcen tages o f

p o s t c o n s u m e r a n d

recovered materials used

in each product. Materials

such as drywall, insulation,

kitchen countertops, glass

tiles, carpeting and carpet

padding may include

recycled content, and the

growing popularity of

such products has made

them relatively simple for

homeowners to find. When

working with contractors,

homeowner s shou ld

emphasize their desire

to use materials made

from recycled content.

Such materials are both

pleasing to the eye and the

environment.

* Embrace adaptability

w h e n d e s i g n i n g a

new home. Rarely do

homeowners design their

homes with renovations

in mind. When building a

dream home, homeowners

do not consider the

l ikelihood that they

will one day move out

or even outgrow the

home. Estimates vary

considerably with regard

to how long the average

homeowner stays in

his home, with some

suggesting as little as

seven years. While data

collected from the United

States Census Bureau

within the last decade

suggests that roughly half

of all homeowners had

lived in their homes for at

least 10 years.

Homeowners building

new homes should expect

to one day move, and

ensuring their new homes

are easily adaptable is both

financially sound and eco-

friendly. When a home is

built with adaptability in

mind, prospective buyers

won’t have to make costly

overhauls. In addition,

homes built to facilitate

future renovations won’t

produce the same amount

of waste as homes that are

less easily adapted.

M a n y h o m e o w n e r s

e m b r a c e h o m e

improvement projects

as opportunities to turn

their homes into private

sanctuaries. But those who

do so with the environment

in mind can significantly

reduce waste and still end

up living in luxury.

Smelly fireplace? After a long season of

use, f ireplaces need

to be cleaned. Many

homeowners think this is

a job that can be put off

until the fall, but spring

is an ideal season to have

the chimney and flue

cleaned and inspected.

One reason to include

scrubbing the chimney

as part of spring cleaning

is to cut down on odor.

After using a fireplace,

a buildup of creosote

forms in the chimney. As

the weather gets warmer,

creosote deposits can start

to smell sour and that odor

will seep into the home.

In addition, moisture can

mix with the creosote

and start to degrade the

flue liner, necessitating

costly repairs. The sooner

a chimney and flue are

cleaned the better. A

chimney sweep can do a

thorough job of scrubbing

down the chimney and

fireplace and ensuring

that everything will be in

working order come next

season.

How to create a rainwater harvesting system

Rainwater collection is a way to conserve water that can be adopted by both private homeowners and businesses. Harvesting water during peak times of precipitation ensures water will be on hand during drought or when water restrictions are implemented. Making use of rainwater reduces reliance on underground wells or municipal water systems. Harvesting rainwater also can help prevent flooding and soil erosion.

The average homeowner can collect thousands of gallons of rainwater each year. To learn just how much water can be harvested, as well as how many natural resources can be produced from that rain, visit www.save-the-rain.com, where men and women can calculate their rain collection potential by geographic location and average rainfall. Afterward, homeowners may be inclined to establish their own rainwater harvesting systems. Here is how to get started.

* Determine your roofing material. Potable water can be harvested from homes with sheet metal or slate roofing. Clay or adobe tiles also may be acceptable. Asphalt, wood shingles and tar roofs may leach toxic chemicals into the water, making it unsafe for drinking. This rainwater may only be collected to use for irrigation methods or washing cars and outdoor items.

* Check gutter materials. Some gutters are made with lead soldering components. A commercial lead swab test can help you determine if there is lead present in your gutters. At a later time you can choose to replace the gutters if you desire a potable supply of water.

* Invest in a collection tank or barrel. A number of manufacturers offer

prefabricated rain collection systems complete with collection barrels. Otherwise, you can use your own barrel or tank to house the collected water. Ensure it is large enough to handle the volume of water collected.

* Purchase and install leaf guards. If your home is surrounded by many trees, you probably accumulate leaf and tree debris in your home gutters and downspouts. Leaf guards will help keep the gutters clear and increase water flow through the water collection system.

* Create a water collection area. A portion of the gutter system should be removed so that it connects to the collection barrel or tank. As the rain falls, it will run down the roof and into the gutters before it streams into the downspouts. The downspout connected to the tank will deposit the water directly inside. Filters can be installed to help block the flow of debris.

* Outfit the tank for overflow and water usage. A spigot and hose connection makes it easy to use the collected water for outdoor purposes. Many rainwater collection systems are designed with an overflow safeguard that will prevent the water from backing up through the system. It will divert the rainwater back out of the downspout when the barrel or tank is full.

A rainwater collection system harnesses a natural source of water to be used for gardens and other outdoor purposes. This water doesn’t contain chlorine or other additives, making it relatively clean and safe to use. Homeowners should check to see if a permit is necessary to install a rainwater collection system and then begin gathering water for various uses.

Recognizing termite damageHome ownership can be an unending series of adventures, especially for those homeowners who love good home improvement projects. Some projects are fun and improve the value of a home instantly, while others are undertaken to address a potentially serious issue.

Discovering that termites are taking up residence where you live can be disconcerting, but termites are a very common occurrence. Understanding termites and recognizing the signs of termite damage early on can help homeowners reduce the havoc that such critters can wreak on their homes.

Termites are social insects that live together in colonies. These colonies eat nonstop, dining on wood and other cellulose plant matter. They also eat materials made from plants, like fabric and paper. According to the National Pest Management Association, termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage a year. Studies show that queen termites can live up to decades under ideal climate conditions while workers and soldiers live approximately one to two years.

While there are many varieties of termites, all are silent destroyers capable of chewing undetected through housing structures. To eradicate termites, homeowners must first identify the insects and then contact a termite management specialist to address the pest problem.

Spotting termitesTermites may not always be visible. Subterranean termite homes are usually formed in soil, where the termites build elaborate tunnel systems that channel through to above-ground food sources. Drywood and dampwood termites may live within the wood they consume and be undetectable until the wood collapses or rots away. Homeowners often realize they have a termite problem when they witness swarming termites. At this point there already may be a mature colony at work damaging a home. Swarming, winged termites form in a mature, established colony. Winged termites emerge and fly off looking for mates. Afterward they will locate a new breeding site and form another colony, potentially spreading infestations through multiple locations. Winged termites are attracted to light and can be seen by windows and doors in spring.

Other signs of termites include accumulation of soil or dirt at the base of wood structures or the foundation of a home. There also may be fissures or cracks near wood surfaces. Sometimes “frass” or termite droppings can be seen. They appear as rough, granulated sawdust.

Covered mud tubes, or channels of mud leading from the soil up the foundation of a home, are indicative of the presence of termites. Even if termites are no longer present in these tubes, that does not mean the termites have moved on. They simply may have chosen a new path to your home.

Keeping termites away

Once termites have been identified, it is time to eliminate them. This means getting rid of water and food sources that are close to a home.

* Repair leaky faucets and other water drips in and around the house.

* Keep gutters and downspouts clean.

* Seal entry points around water and utility lines or pipes.

* Divert water away from the foundation.* Keep lumber, firewood or paper away from the foundation of the home.

* Clear away stumps and tree debris.* Prevent untreated wood from contacting the soil.

Treating termitesIt is very difficult for homeowners to get rid of termites by themselves. Very often they require the work of professionals. A termite exterminator will conduct a visual inspection of a home and property and may do extensive testing involving expensive acoustic or infrared equipment to probe the soil beneath the house.

Depending on the species of termite, the exterminator will suggest various treatments. These may include the application of pesticides and making areas around the home less hospitable to termites. Severely damaged wood may need to be removed and replaced.

Termites are problematic in many areas of the world. These insects often stay hidden and do serious damage that can cost homeowners a fortune. Treating termites promptly is essential.

The basics of cleaning windows After a long winter of snow and ice, many people are ready for the warmth and sunshine synonymous with spring. But dirty windows can block that sunshine from ¿QGLQJLWVZD\LQWRDKRPH:DVKLQJZLQGRZVFDQEHquite an undertaking, particularly in those homes with many windows on multiple levels. However, there are several time-saving tips available that can cut the work considerably.

* Save window washing for a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may dry the cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your windows. 9DFXXPZLQGRZVLOOVDQGWUDFNV¿UVWWRUHPRYHDJRRGdeal of dust and debris. This will reduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the windows while cleaning them.* Use a combination of a sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to get really clean windows. The squeegee helps to prevent streaks and cut down on the time it takes the windows to dry, all the while helping the windows to sparkle.* Window screens may be the culprit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screens with water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineffective.* Working with a partner can make the task go much more quickly. One person can clean the exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors.* A mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborn dirt, wash windows with diluted ammonia or vinegar.* Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hard-to-reach windows. A telescoping cleaning tool and pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up.

Equip your home with a sump pump and backup battery

In 2012, hundreds of miles of coastline along the northeastern United States were battered and decimated due to Hurricane Sandy. More than a year later, many homeowners were still dealing with the consequences of the devastating storm.

Hurricane Sandy illustrated just how destructive water can be. Each year, storms across North America have the potential to flood homes or cause water to enter the basement or first floor. According to the National Flood Insurance Program, a mere six inches of water in a 2,000 square foot home can cause around $40,000 in damage. Homeowners looking to avoid such damages can rely on sump pumps and backup emergency systems to keep sublevels dry and safe.

Sump pumps are frequently used in homes at risk of flooding or in homes where the water table is above the foundation of the home. Sump pumps remove water that has accumulated in a water collecting sump basin built into the foundation of the home. Water may enter through perimeter drains (French drains) built into the basement or directly through the sump basin itself. The pump will send the water away from the house through a series of pipes that could drain into a dry well, into a municipal storm drain or at the curb.

Many sump pumps are hard-wired into a home’s electrical system and will automatically turn on when the water level in the sump basin has risen enough to trigger the pump. A flotation device built into the pump will rise enough to turn on the pump, which will then dispel the water until the device returns to its regular level.

When operating correctly, sump pumps are effective at removing water and keeping basements and crawl spaces dry. However, in the event of a power outage, which is common when strong winds accompany flooding rains, a sump pump is rendered useless unless there is a backup battery attached to the sump pump.

Having a battery hooked up to a sump pump, or a backup sump pump that is battery-powered, can give homeowners peace of mind in any storm. A backup plan ensures the pump will still be able to remove water for a certain period of time until electricity is restored to the home. Another option is to make sure the sump pump is connected to a power generator should the main power supply go out. As long as the generator is running, the sump pump will expel the water.

Water damage to a home can cost thousands of dollars in repairs, particularly when it is not covered by standard home insurance policies. Sump pumps can help keep homes dry and safe.
