“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” So spoke school-dodging deep-thinker Ferris Bueller during his Day Off, frighteningly waaaaaay back in the big-hair and even bigger shoulder-pad-acceptingly disturbing days of 1986. And he was right too. But nowhere is this philosophy truer than in the Usain Bolt-beatingly fast life of the AV and CI industry. Here equipment and installation techniques move so fast that if you don’t stop and look around pretty much constantly you’ll be out of the innovation loop, out of touch and, ultimately, out of the game almost instantly.

This, perhaps less than head-spinning, revelation occurred to me recently after stumbling across a copy of the first ever issue of SVI from 2003 under a pile of ancient press packs my wife had finally convinced me to part with as they were now obscuring our view of daylight. Flicking through the pages and looking at the likes of DVD-Audio and SACD players, CRT TVs, and the sheer volume of one-box home cinema solutions that we hailed as the hottest cutting-edge kit back then, it’s staggering to think how much has changed, how many different audio-visual and custom install technologies (and companies) have come and gone, and how far the custom install industry has grown and evolved from the comparatively tiny niche market mostly aimed at the more than modestly well-off into the sprawling installabeast it is today, capable of covering all manner of clients’ budgets and swelling CEDIA’s ranks on a daily basis – an incredible amount of change, all of which has, of course, been chronicled within some 113 issues of this magazine.

However the trouble with stopping to look around constantly is that you, the thrusting industry powerhouse, are probably so busy thrusting that you don’t have the time to stop. But then that’s why you have us, your regular and reliable round-up of absolutely everything you need to know each month. Take this issue for convenient example, from the latest lines in all aspects of home cinema equipment to essential industry insight from the experts, plus all the news that’s fit to print, while we can’t guarantee that the tech we feature this month won’t eventually go the way of the digital Dodo like so much before (we can pretty guarantee that it will), no matter how insanely fast the AV and CI life continues to move, like your own personal, papery Ferris Bueller, we keep doing all the looking around so that you don’t miss it.

What is a ‘Day Off’ anyway?

CEDIA SHINDIG SPONSORSWith the CEDIA Awards just two months away, the association has announced the sponsors for the prestigious event. Exclusive Platinum sponsor AMX, Gold sponsor Merit Lilin, Silver sponsors Kaleidescape and Rako, and after-party sponsors, AWE and HDanywhere will all have a presence at the event which is taking place on Friday 11th July at the Old Royal Naval College in London.

Playing host to over 300 guests, the CEDIA Awards offers members a great opportunity to benefit from substantial branding in the run-up to the event and on the night itself.

For the second year running, AMX, manufacturer of hardware and software solutions, is taking centre stage as the platinum sponsor. New to the CEDIA Awards and signing up as a Gold sponsor is Merit Lilin, a leading manufacturer of IP video security products. Both Kaleidescape, market leaders in movie, and Rako, providers of state of the art digital dimming technology and controls for a diverse range of lighting systems, are also joining the list of sponsors.

This year, the after-party will be taking place in the same venue as the awards ceremony, in the Undercroft, located beneath the Painted Hall. The elegant space was originally designed as a dining hall for Greenwich Pensioners when the Old Royal Naval College was the Royal Hospital for Seamen and has provided a venue for entertaining and dining since 1750s.

Following the recent collaboration announcement, AWE, UK distributor of a wide range of high quality CI brand,s and HDanywhere, manufacturer of Multiroom 4K HD video distribution systems and HDMI connectivity, are teaming up to sponsor the after-party.

AMX CYCLES FOR SENSEOn the 23rd July, AMX Europe’s Will Turney, Charlie Sullivan, Laurens De Baere, Guillaume Le Royer, James Hewett, together with Sales Director Jonathan Mangnall and Kevin Morrison, Executive Vice President, Global Sales, will embark on a gruelling 265-mile bike ride from London to Paris. Departing from central London, they will wind their way through the English and French countryside, clocking up in excess of 60 miles per day, before cycling up the Champs Elysées and rounding the Arc de Triomphe, to finish in Paris on Saturday 26th July.

This epic cycle-ride is being undertaken in aid of a cause that is close to AMX’s heart, and one that is closely aligned with the AV industry as a whole this year: Sense. A national organisation that supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind, Sense provides tailored support, advice and information as well as specialist services to all deafblind people, their families, carers and the professionals who work with them.

The London to Paris bike ride is just one of a series of challenges that AMX staff across Europe will be undertaking this year, all in the name of Sense. From half marathons to 52 mile ridge walks, to the London to Brighton bike ride, plus a 24 hour cycle race in Le Mans and not to mention the infamous Tough Mudder, the hardcore obstacle course designed to test the toughest of the tough! It is the company’s aim to raise as much money as possible to fund the creation of the all-important sensory rooms. These darkened spaces provide a vital resource, enabling deafblind individuals and small groups to benefit from the use of ‘cause and effect’ equipment such as interactive bubble tubes, water beds, small sensory toys and various types of interactive lighting.

So, whilst AMX has the commitment, the resolve and (hopefully) the endurance; the company needs your help and support to ensure that its individual and collective efforts are worthwhile. If you want to help AMX make a positive difference to the lives of the deafblind, please visit: http://www.justgiving.com/company/amx or donate to the London to Paris team via http://www.justgiving.com/companyteams/AMXers-London-to-Paris. You know it makes sense.

AUDIO AWEHigh-end distributor to the CI industry AWE has started shipping the highly anticipated KEF Ci200RR-THX speaker. With THX ULTRA2 certification, the unit is the first in-ceiling offering from KEF to carry the company’s legendary ‘Reference’ status. Sure to satisfy with its audiophile quality sound, KEF engineers have cleverly combined the performance of a floor standing unit, with all the practicality of an in-ceiling speaker.

The KEF Ci200RR-THX is perfectly positioned for use in 5.1 or 7.1 home theatre systems or as ‘music only’ speakers. Utilising the company’s revolutionary Uni-Q driver array, originally designed for the floor-standing KEF Blade, the Ci2000RR benefits from similar enhanced dispersion characteristics. With a 38mm (1.5 inch) vented aluminium tweeter and KEF’s own ‘tangerine waveguide’, mounted centrally within a 200mm (8-inch) aluminium bass/mid driver.

“We were so impressed by the sound of the KEF Ci200RR-THX that we decided to specify nine of them for our brand new show apartment,” explains James Drummie, Product Manager at AWE. “Due to their advanced construction, the traditional ‘sweet spot’ of listening is extended far beyond traditional in-ceiling units. Sonic dispersion is actually so wide that that effectively everyone gets the best sound, regardless of where they are positioned in the room.”

THX ULTRA2 certification means that the Ci200RR has been engineered with the design characteristics of professional studio speakers. Accurately recreating the tonal balance of filmmakers’ final mixes, the unit creates a truly impactful sound.

With its UTB (Ultra-Thin Bezel) design, visually, the Ci200RR blends seamlessly into any interior space, while also employing the same cut out and outside diameter as other KEF 200mm speakers for ease of installation.T: +44 (0)1372 729 995, E: [email protected], www.awe-europe.com

Matt joins The Multi-Room Company from specialist AV brand distribution business, Anthem AV, where he was responsible for the growth of its business in the South over the past four years; prior to that he held sales positions with KEF Audio and Acoustic Energy.

The Multi-Room Company holds the exclusive UK distribution rights for several high-profile Custom Installation brands including: Russound; Centralite; Atlantic Technology; Key Digital; and the recently introduced Italian loudspeaker brand, Garvan Acoustics. The company’s Hi-Fi distribution division, RPD Distribution, is responsible for UK sales of Heed Audio and Plinius Audio.

Statham’s proven track record in the high-end custom installation industry, working in a business-to-business environment with architects, specifiers and buyers, and with the Hi-Fi retail sector, equip him with the knowledge and skills to develop both areas of The Multi-Room Company’s business.

On joining the business, Matt says: “The opportunity to join a successful business with the longevity and portfolio of The Multi-Room Company was too good a chance to miss. Its range of brands and the exciting new products being introduced, together the close-knit team’s approach to a personal customer experience, have me feeling very excited about getting stuck in.” He continues, “The opportunities open to the business via its carefully selected brands and loyal customer base are many. And the chance to introduce these cutting-edge products such as the Russound X5 streamer and Garvan Drop speakers to potential new customers is a sales manager’s dream. I look forward to meeting customers old and new over the coming months.”

SVI SHOW SPECIAL: HOME TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE

There’s been a dearth of decent CI shows in the UK ever since CEDIA ended its annual Expo and distributors, manufacturers and installers alike were left to wonder into the wilderness. Sure, there have been options aplenty for the AV product side of things, such as the brilliant Bristol Show, but it’s been thin on the ground for the world of custom install, forcing distribution firms such as Invision to host their own events for the brands they represent.

However, despite the success of the HTS 2013, when Invision decided to invite all its brands to exhibit and give manufacturers and customers the chance to combine and chat, all whilst offering expert opinion in mini-seminars this year, even they were surprised by the overwhelming response from the industry.

Over the two days of the Showcase, the staff on the SVI stand witnessed seemingly never-ending crowds coming through the door, as the event drew some 264 of CI’s finest into its confines.

But, don’t take it from us – here’s what those aforementioned crowds had to say…

Invision UK - Peter Alloway, UK Sales Manager “I was delighted with the Home Technology Showcase event on many levels, firstly with the number of our customers that attended, and many quoted to me that it was ‘a great investment of their time during such a busy period, meeting with the manufacturers was a great opportunity’, secondly we planned to raise the bar on last year’s event, and we certainly did that. A great testament to the relationships we have out in the field from our seven technical sales team members.”

Aquavision - Richard Henton “We thought it was a great show. As usual Invision did a very good job organising the event and publicising it well to attract lots of visitors. We saw a large number of customers and everyone had questions or

active projects they were looking for us to help with. It was also good to be able to show and explain products such as the Bespoke Mirrors, Connec-TV and AquaTouch. These are more complex products and it was great that customers could actually see them working and understand what parts are required and how everything connects together. The Bespoke mirrors and Connec-TV had the best response. It is difficult to explain how good a Mirror TV is until you actually see it and our mirrors received very positive feedback. Again the first time we show customers the Connec-TV product running video, control and power over one CAT5 cable they are totally amazed and then start to think of several applications they have for the product.”

LILIN - Steve LiddiardThe Home Technology show was a fantastic platform to raise our brand awareness and showcase our comprehensive range of award-winning IP Video security product; from megapixel cameras to Network Video Recorders. It certainly delivered on our expectations and was an excellent opportunity to connect and interact with new and existing customers. It is a MUST attend event for LILIN and we look forward to the exhibition in 2015”.

Core Brands - Marc Waple“Invision UK created a landmark event that we were very proud to support. Showing the latest developments of our Elan g! home entertainment and control system to the extensive range of indoor and outdoor loudspeakers solutions from our multi award winning Niles Audio. Invision UK created the perfect environment to demonstrate and discuss our products with the UK installers and integrators who are at cutting edge of our industry, creating the best projects the UK custom Install industry has to offer.”

RTI – Pete Baker “I am delighted to have participated in the Invision Home Technology Showcase event. It was a first class event, in an exciting venue at the Royal Air force Museum, well attended by press and dealers alike. I take my hat off to the talented Invision team for the outstanding job they did to market, promote and fill the event with industry associates and overseas manufacturers; making the event so exciting and beneficial for the dealers and other participants. Dealers also seemed to really enjoy the educations sessions that were hosted by various manufacturers, during the course of the event, making it more worthwhile for the attendees. Bravo Invision Team! I look forward to supporting the Invision team for the next Home Technology showcase, and visiting with more dealers and industry associates at another exciting venue.” iRoom - Mark van Zon“I would like to thank Invision for giving iRoom the opportunity to be part of the Home Technology Showcase. It was very well-organised and I would like to thank the complete Invision team for the big efforts. Great venue, great set-up, great booths, great people, lots of press, lots of customers! For iRoom it was the perfect stage to create even more awareness of our unique motorised iPad docking solutions.”

Wyrestorm - Adrian Ickeringill “It was a fantastic event, well-organised and attended. Great to see so many installers and fantastic response to the new thin receivers and 4K matrix models that we had on show. Judging by the conversations held during the event, the market is certainly on the up, with a number of projects and specifications being discussed. Congratulations must go to the Invision team for their hard work in holding such a successful event.”

Paul Mead - Tavistock Sound & Vision“What a great day we had, learning about some new technologies, and being able to talk with the manufacturers was superb. To see a 4K picture on a projector and OLED screen was also brilliant. Being welcomed by the MD was a nice touch as often this does not happen. The day was run professionally and slick with staff being clearly identified by their polo shirts should we require assistance.”

Alex Camara - Audio Control“For our team at AudioControl, HTS with InvisionUK was a great success. We saw over 120 dealers one-to-one, had very focused meetings, were superbly supported by the Invision team live on-site and are now working on all of the follow-up requests from dealers across the UK. We are already excited about HTS 2015.

“It was great to see a renewed sense of optimism across the UK CI industry. Our meetings were focused on growth projects and we came away with a long list of opportunities to focus on with UK dealers. The team at Invision were excellent at facilitating the meetings and as a new partner in the UK, HTS was a big success for AudioControl.”

Jeff Curtis - Luxul“The Invision UK Showcase was a great opportunity for Luxul to engage with the UK dealer community. We had the chance to demonstrate our new product offering as well as hear about opportunities and challenges from the broader dealer group in the UK. Thanks for letting us participate.”

Originator of audio orbs of excellence, Elipson Audio, has announced the introduction of the ‘Audio Bridge’ – a new and convenient connection hub for their Planet LW active, wireless loudspeaker system.

By recognising changes in audio technologies and consumer’s increasing demands for convenience, the Audio Bridge now allows a wider selection of sources to be sent wirelessly to the Planet LW speakers. AUDIO ITALIANOItalian architectural loudspeaker brand Garvan has appointed The Multi-Room Company Ltd as its exclusive distributor in the UK, helping to bring a bit of European style, choice and substance to the design-conscious installer and consumer.

The company’s coaxial in-wall speakers come with either round of square grilles, in any colour of fabric or perforated metal and are designed to be absolutely flush with the wall, with no flange or bevel edge. Similar grilles are available for the range of in-wall two-way, d’appolito and passive radiator models and all models are also available with frame surrounds in any colour, stainless steel or polished steel and with rounded or square corners. The flexibility and adaptability of the speakers to their environment and the surrounding decor is without equal in the world of architectural speakers. Installation in stud or block-work walls is accommodated through dedicated mounting frames and back-boxes specially designed for each situation.

Each model in the Garvan range of in-wall speakers has an equivalent on-wall sibling, which comes in a similarly large variety of finishes. The steel enclosures can be supplied in a brushed stainless steel finish, a primed finish ready for painting the same colour as the interior decor, or any RAL colour can be specified. The perforated metal grilles can be the same colour or a contrasting finish, or an acoustically transparent fabric grille in a variety of colours can be specified. Absolute flexibility and style are the watchwords for the Garvan products.

The flagship product ‘Drop’, a speaker crafted by the world-famous porcelain artisans in Faenza, crowns the range. Available in solid, metallic, pearlescent finishes and any RAL colour, Drop is set to become an icon of loudspeaker design and an obvious choice for architects, specifiers and clients looking for a statement piece of audio equipment for a residential or commercial installation. Its water droplet shape is not only an aesthetically pleasing form, but also an acoustically effective design that aids sound dispersion, an essential facet for a suspended outdoor (or indoor) speaker. Minimalist floor, wall or ceiling mounts are available to position the Drop wherever required.

Mike Bonnette, The Multi-Room Company’s product director, says: “Garvan represents a radical new solution for designers and demanding end users. The variety of styles, colours and installation options is the most widespread of any brand we have come across and fills a real gap in the UK market for designer speakers.”www.multi-room.com

MC DADDY OF HEADPHONE AMPSThe new MHA100 is a highly versatile new headphone amplifier aimed squarely at the audiophile. Employing a new adaptation of McIntosh’s unique autoformer technology to offers three selectable headphone impedance ranges: 8-40; 40-150 and 150-600 ohms, this flexibility enables every headphone to deliver optimal McIntosh sound quality.

The MHA100 is also perfectly suited to today’s wide variety of digital source components with the internal McIntosh Digital Engine offering four digital inputs (coaxial, optical, balanced digital AES/EBU and USB), allowing decoding at up to 32-bit/ 192kHz resolution for maximum analogue fidelity. Screen supremo, Samsung has had Ultra-High Definition (UHD) firmly held down in the CI market for a while now. This trend looks set to continue, with various new flat and curved options for integrators to choose from when specifying a screen for a project.

Since its introduction last year, the behemoth 85-inch Samsung S9 has been turning heads for its fantastic picture quality at four times the detail of Full-HD. Its unique free-standing ‘canvas and easel’ design is unlike anything else available, and makes a bold statement wherever it’s placed. In addition, the S9 can now be wall mounted if required.

Not looking for a screen quite as large but don’t want to sacrifice the pixel count? Not a problem with Samsung’s new HU7500 range, which takes over from its predecessor the F9000. Available in 48-, 55-, 65- and 75-inch versions, the HU7500 brings 4K and 3D viewing straight into the front room.

Looking for more of a 3D IMAX experience? Again, no issue with the latest curved HU8500 line up. Its concave design aims to improve the

viewing angle of all content, from the local news to Hollywood blockbusters, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Available in 55-, 65- and huge 78-inch variants, the UHD HU8500 is sure to impress.

The S9, HU7500 and 8500 ship with all the bells and whistles you would come to expect from Samsung. Including its world-renowned Smart TV system, Smart Hub – which offers streaming video services and a recommendations system based on individual viewing habits.

In addition, all models are Smart Evolution ready, a technology unique to Samsung, it ensures that the screens’ processors and firmware can be upgraded whatever turn broadcasting standards take, ensuring an end-user’s investment is protected.

Finally, and most importantly at present, all models include full UHD upscaling, which optimises existing HD and Full-HD content to completely fill the 3840 x 2160 display (that’s just shy of 8.3-million pixels!).

JVC DLA RANGEWhen it comes to projectors and their partner screens the first thing you want to achieve is stunning picture quality, and JVC’s range not only delivers substantial improvements in image quality but also gives the industry’s highest native and dynamic contrast, further improved this year by a new D-ILA device and wire grid polariser. JVC has also added an intelligent lens aperture that can dial in even deeper blacks, and models equipped with 4K e-shift3, the latest iteration of the company’s e-shift technology, feature a 4K signal input (60p) so both 4K and 2K sources can be displayed as 3840 x 2160 images.

JVC’s 2014 range is composed of the DLA X900R, DLA X700R and DLA X500R. All models are 3D-enabled and offer 4K e shift3, which shifts sub-frames by half a pixel both vertically and horizontally to achieve 4x the pixel density of the original content.

With the lack of 4K sources at this time JVC have given users the option of viewing their existing 1080p content in near native 4K resolution. JVC’s 4K e shift technology was developed to up convert and scale 2D HD content to a 4K signal. With 4K inputs, the new projectors can now process 4K signals as well to deliver a smooth, detailed image.

Picture performance is further optimised by a new multiple pixel control (MPC) processor with eight band detection. The MPC processor offers four presets plus an auto setting that selects the best up conversion process by detecting the frequency of each pixel. Picture quality is also enhanced through a new ‘clear black’ feature that provides local area contrast enhancement, and improved clear-motion-drive (CMD).

“As proud distributors of JVC products, we’re obviously delighted to be able to offer our customers this fabulous range or projectors,” explains Adrian Summers, product sales manager at Invision UK. “JVC has put an incredible amount of time and effort into developing a range of features that deliver the smoothest, most highly detailed image.”T: +44 (0)1359 270 280E: [email protected]

DRAPER SCREENSSo why use a projection screen when you can simply project onto a wall painted in white? Well, you can do that… but the result will not be anything near as good as with a projection screen; and that isn’t getting the best out of the projector, so get serious and screen-up!

A high-quality projection screen enhances the projected light and reflects vibrant colours, sharp contrast and rich details. So once you’ve determined the correct size of screen for the audience area it’s time to determine what type of screen and screen surface will be used. Basically there are two types: the unsupported vinyl, which is characterised by its flexible qualities and the textile, backed with its reflective front surface laminated to a woven textile base. These surfaces need to be correctly tensioned to achieve sufficient flatness to perform properly, hence fixed frame and Tab Tension screens are used with a flexible surface; and non-tensioned textile backed screen surfaces, which are used on spring-roller operated and motorised projection screens. These screens hang suitably flat by virtue of the dimensional stability of the material and the weight of the bottom dowel.

Adrian Summers product sales manager at Invision UK explains: “Projection screens are an area that requires a lot of thought and preparation, rather than the here is the biggest screen we can fit in approach. With Draper’s custom screen service we at Invision UK can correctly specify the screen best suited to the application. This custom service opens up the opportunity to deliver the best possible picture quality while overcoming the most demanding of interior design challenges making Draper the number one choice for the custom integrator.”

Once the screen itself has been specified, Draper’s Control Box features the most usual and flexible means of operation, such as RF, IR, Dry Contact/Contact Closure, 12V trigger and RS232. The Control Box is an excellent solution for integration and communication with external control systems. For convenience it comes equipped with a 300cm cord to power outlet, a 150cm screen cord, and a 30cm Dry Contact/RS232 cable as standard. The box also has a built-in IR eye. For standard installations the Control Box is also available in three pre-assembled kits: RF AutoLink Kit; RF Remote Control Kit; and IR Remote Control Kit.T: +44 (0)1359 270 280E: [email protected]

SVI COVER STAR: JVC Z SERIES

Cutting a cool-kit swathe on our cover this issue and soon to be found in and on the ears of those who care about their audio, JVC’s Z SERIES headphones, featuring the new ‘Real Sound System’, mark another industry first in audio engineering.

Slick-looking and capable of superior sounds, the no-compromise rich bass and mid-high range audio performance is achieved through JVC’s breakthrough acoustic architecture. Ingeniously fusing the advantages of a dedicated bass driver and a high-end Hi-Fi speaker structure in headphones for the first time, the aforementioned innovative Real Sound System delivers the balanced active-passive response of a Kelton-Method subwoofer structure and the extended frequency response and superb clarity of the mid-high range.

Keeping it RealJVC’s quest for original quality sound has produced a string of innovations in headphones performance, and the global debut of the Real Sound System at the tail-end of 2013 raised the bar for headphones audio quality by achieving rich, deep bass sound without sacrificing mid- to high-range reproduction. While posing major engineering challenges, JVC’s core concept of adding a woofer with separate dedicated drivers for bass and mid-high frequencies was a logical evolutionary step; evolutionary and revolutionary.

Take the HA-FXZ100/200 inner ear headphones series, not only adding an 8.8mm woofer unit to the acclaimed Twin System unit, but also boasting an ‘industry first’ Kelton-Method woofer structure. In order to fit the Kelton concept in the limited space available, JVC reinvented the headphones speaker structure. After extensive trial and error, development finally resulted in the ‘Stream Duct’ system – measuring only 0.4mm diameter and 30mm in length, the precision fabricated duct is ideal for reproduction of pure bass sound. Together with the Twin System’s carbon nanotubes diaphragm for the high-range and a carbon diaphragm for mid-tones and the Stream Woofer, the Real Sound System was born.

Ear-encompassing ExperienceNext up, the HA-SZ1000/2000 around ear headphones come packing even more innovation, including the ‘industry first’ Stream Woofer DB (double bass-reflex), combining the Kelton approach with a double bass-reflex architecture. This separately dedicated Stream Woofer DB system also allows the incorporation of an ideal-sized mid-high frequency driver mated to a carbon nanotubes diaphragm for mid-high range reproduction free from bass interference.

A dual bass-reflex woofer system that features Dual Stream Ducts and two separate chambers for not only richer bass, but also suppression of quality instabilities in mid- and high-range reproduction, the ingenious design and placement of the dual ducts and dual chambers also allow sufficient space for

the large 55mm driver unit while maintaining compactness. The separately dedicated subwoofer also allowed JVC engineers to

optimise the driver for mid- to high-range reproduction, and exploit the high-frequency characteristics of the carbon nanotubes

diaphragm for exceptional audio purity. The result is stylish premium set of headphones that promise rich bass quality without interference with mid-high audio reproduction and the enjoyment of delicate high-range and solid mid-frequency sound without compromising the bass experience.www.jvc.co.uk/zseries

SVI HOME CINEMA SEPARATES

Eschewing simple one-box solutions for home cinema, we round up the sexiest separates around for achieving silver-screen Shangri-la…

DIVIDEDTHEY

Whilst a one-box cinema solution can be bought and set up by even the simplest of lumbering Luddites, selecting and installing sophisticated separates is the only real route to true home cinema and, as such, should only be attempted by the smartest of tech-savvy installers (that’s you, by the way). And said smartest of tech-savvy installers knows how important it is to keep up-to-date with the latest options being rolled out amongst the vast array of AV kit available. So, helpfully putting it all in one place for you, we present this handy round-up of the newest and equally smartest separates out. Don’t say we never do anything for you…

STANDANTHEM MRX RANGEBuilding on the outstanding success of Anthem’s first-generation range of premium home cinema separates, the respected high-end brand from Canada has unveiled its next generation: the MRX 710, MRX 510 and MRX 310.

As well as Anthem’s proven class-leading audio technology and high-quality amplification, the latest models now take in a sleek new minimalist aesthetic – making sure they look as good as they sound – and benefit from the very latest app-enabled functionality.

AUDIO CONTROLThe potentially biggest challenge in home cinema is getting the sound right – pre-amplifiers are the nerve centre of a high performance home theatre, as they impact the AV performance and provide user control. So, to ensure nothing but the best in pre-amp performance, Audio Control consulted with experts around the world, thereby making sure that their Maestro M4 met the demands of a high-end cinema through state of the art engineering and a powerful array of features for complete flexibility.

The Maestro M4 matches audiophile quality componentry with professional studio video processing. The results are pre-amplifiers that deliver unsurpassed levels of performance.

But, once that cinema sound has been processed it’s time to amplify it! So say hello to the Pantages G3 – a five-channel amplifier that incorporates a unique and highly efficient Class H design that allows it to produce 230W into each channel, at an 8-ohm load, with total audio output at over 1200W RMS. Designed as a matching companion to Audio Control’s Maestro M3 theatre pre-amp processor, the Pantages G3 incorporates a simple yet elegant design, highlighted by refined Rose Gold lettering on a high gloss black display, the sleek front panel is

also accentuated by ‘cool blue’ LED indicators that complement the exquisite cosmetics of the Pantages G3.

The Pantages G3 incorporates Audio Control’s LightDrive Anti-Clipping Protection Circuit, which safely eliminates any possibility of speaker damaging clipping and distortion, even in extreme conditions. Audio enthusiasts can enjoy their audio systems at even the most ‘aggressive’ levels.

If budget doesn’t quite stretch to the top-flight separates system Audio Control also offer their new Concert AVR series which deliver a visually stunning entertainment experience. Behind the striking contemporary visual design, the Concert AVR-8 benefits from the high-end audio performance that Audio Control is renowned for. Its powerful high-current 7x 200W per channel theatre amplifier creates a truly incredible audio platform that turns watching a film into a movie lover’s nirvana. The Concert AVR-6 also benefits from the same high performing audio and video platform as the Concert AVR-8, powering its seven-channel amplifier at 100W per channel into 8-ohms. SVI HOME CINEMA SEPARATES

FURMAN IT-REFERENCE 16E IOnce the hardware is sorted there tends to be one last area that is always overlooked in the great home cinema installation scheme: power conditioning. Today’s AC lines are plagued with ever-increasing noise, and when AC noise couples into a system’s critical components, it masks low-level signals and cripples performance. This low level content is critical because it relays the crucial harmonics and ambience in audio, and depth and clarity in video.

With Furman’s IT-Reference 16E i’s exclusive Discrete Symmetrical Power, video screens, projectors, Blu-ray players, pre-amplifiers, and matrix switches are fed linearly filtered ultra-low-noise symmetrical power. This dramatically reduces AC noise, ensuring peak operation of critical components, resulting in the whole home cinema system performing as it should – utterly uncompromised. Video presentation will be crisp and colours true with greater grey and black scale definition, as well as noticeably improved depth and clarity.

Another critical feature is Furman’s exclusive Series Multi-Stage Protection featuring Extreme Voltage Shutdown (EVS). This virtually maintenance-free surge suppression assures the highest level of AC protection possible, without sacrificing itself when the offending surge is severe – no damaged equipment, no service calls, no down time. ARCAM AV950New from Arcam is the AV950, an AV pre-processor which sets a fresh benchmark for audiophile quality performance in high end home cinema installations.

The video and audio stages on the AV950 feature integral 4K ‘Ultra HD’ and 3D video capability and also allow standard and up to seven high definition sources to be upscaled to any resolution, where required.

Control is a vital part of any custom installation and so the AV950 includes auto set-up with room correction and can be quickly and fully integrated within whole house control systems through RS232 or IP connection. For simple systems, Arcam also offers a free of charge iOS control app.

An internal tuner provides a fully integrated FM/DAB/DAB+ (in appropriate markets) radio solution. Worldwide access to radio stations is provided through the network connection, which also interfaces to uPnP audio servers. The USB port supports memory devices as well as digital audio from an iPod, iPhone or iPad, and an on-board power supply unit can supply Arcam’s versatile range of rSeries accessories, which enables installers to quickly and conveniently add an Arcam rBlink to the system for audio playback via high quality aptX Bluetooth playback.

“The AV950 has been designed to provide the finest sound in home cinema,” says Arcam’s Managing Director, Charlie Brennan. “It delivers a level of sonic detail and emotional connection that takes the listener to the very heart of the cinematic or musical experience. Installers will also appreciate the unit’s compatibility with current and emerging technologies, such as, 4K, the range of control options available and the product’s inherent reliability. Quite simply, this is Arcam’s highest performing pre-processor ever.” www.arcam.co.uk

Ah, the start of summer is just upon us and it’s busy, busy, busy! The industry seems to have produced more new tech shows than ever, and with the return of Invision UK’s Home Technology Showcase it was a case of even bigger and even better. All key Invision UK brands were in attendance, including Wyrestorm, LG, Niles, JVC, Aquavision, RTI, iRoom, Autonomic, Elan and Luxul, along with newcomers including, security specialist LILIN, app-developer Janus Technology and ICE Cables. Wyrestorm had a large presence at the show, unveiling its new MX-0404-PP-KIT Pro Plus HD matrix with ultra slim receivers, as well as offering the first look at an 8x8 matrix 4K compatible matrix. Also on show was a range of low-cost Express line HDMI switching products. I was also very interested to see a new HDMI with Grip Lock from ICE Cable. “Our patented grip-lock system on the connectors can resist about 15lbs of pull force,” explained CEO, Brian Rizzo. “When you plug it in, it snaps in real tight. Installers are guaranteed a good connection and that will eliminate service calls about HDMIs popping out.”

Also present and correct was the usual mix of HD and Ultra HD screens. Aquavision had their current range of waterproof TVs on show and had a neat one-cable-to-TV solution making for a much easier install thanks to a termination box located in an easily accessible area and a Cat 5 connecting said box to TV.

AudioControl used the event to present its two new 4K-capable AV receivers alongside a compact Rialto 400 amp/DAC. The AudioControl Rialto 400 is a compact, high-powered amplifier with a built-in audiophile-grade DAC designed specifically to provide greater performance and higher sound quality for all analogue and digital systems, including Sonos home entertainment systems. Delivering over 100W of power per channel into 8 ohms and 200W per channel into 4-ohm loads, the 400 also features a built-in high-performance Wolfson DAC which drastically improves audio quality. This choice of an audiophile-quality DAC allows connected digital audio sources, such as Apple TV, Pandora and Spotify, to provide higher quality acoustics with clearer, more accurate analogue signals during playback.

InVision of Expo ExcellenceThe Home Technology Show has plugged the void left by CEDIA, and we just love the format – mini training talks and a two-day show in an easy to reach location is always going to be a winner; and indeed it was!

If you did not have time to visit, you can check out www.insideci.co.uk where we have posted 16 short videos of the event. The Show was the first outing for our new camera, the Canon C500, and it is performing out of this world; the 4K images coming out of this kit are sublime!

Searching for new products, I came across the amBX Light-Scene Engine, a powerful new IP-based multi-room lighting controller for both residential and commercial applications. More than just a mood-setter, amBX also allows lights to react sympathetically to both TV content and music, creating a more

immersive multimedia experience. The system gives lighting designers immense scope, with more than 256 Light-Scene choices available, together with up to 256 selectable colour palettes available per Light-Scene. The system can be used to control White, RGB, RGBW and RGBA lights (DMX), and offers IP connectivity for remote access, control and programming. Versatile and scalable, handling both single room installations as well as multiple spaces around the home, or communal spaces such as meeting rooms, classrooms, universities, bars and clubs and restaurants, the amBX Light-Scene Engine can be controlled by simple user apps and interfaces from AMX, Crestron, Control4, Lutron and DemoPad, whilst the processor itself is made from aluminium and steel, and measures 55 x 148 x 165mm.

Proving IDOver at Inside ID we were equally busy recently with May Design Week and a design debate at JAB UK, plus we’ve also been working hard on the Inside CI website and launching the new directory service – this section of the website will grow over the next couple of months to provide you with all the contacts and information you need at a touch of a button.

And that’s all from me until next issue! I must dash now as I am going to be late for yet another gig… Who said publishing was easy?

SVI CLARITY COMMENT

Mouthpiece of music in the UK, PHIL HANSEN from the Clarity Alliance, returns this issue to raise a familiar point…

CLARITY OF THOUGHT

Along with his duties at the Clarity Alliance, Phil Hansen also runs Red Sheep, a successful marketing and PR consultancy operating within and outside the Hi-Fi industry.

I write this having just returned from spending 24-hours at the world’s biggest and arguably best Hi-Fi show, the High End Show in Munich. But spending just 24-hours there, or in reality eight hours at the show, just isn’t long enough to do this event any kind of justice, as anyone who has been to it will testify. But it is certainly long enough to get a flavour of it and see the good points and bad points and sample some fine German ale!

For those of you who have never attended, the High End Show is unlike any show we have in the UK. Even compared to the heyday of Penta, this show is something else, with its impeccably managed layout, efficient German organisation, mixture of affordable and ultra-high end brands and visitor numbers that we can only dream of.

It is fair to say that the shows debate has been discussed ad infinitum in the UK, at Clarity meetings, BADA and BFA meetings, on the forums, in the bar at Bristol and in the pages of this hallowed publication. Fair criticism then if I get slapped down for daring to raise it yet again, but as nothing has actually happened to improve the show situation in the UK for some time, raise it again I will.

A No-ShowWe are in the situation where there currently isn’t an independent, apolitical and inclusive national Hi-Fi show, which in the world’s spiritual home of Hi-Fi surely is a travesty? For a show to be successful and beyond suspicion of hidden (or not so hidden) agendas it really should be run by either a totally independent exhibition organiser or a trade association. Shows run by magazines or dealers or distributors will always have an agenda behind them. That’s not particularly a criticism, or even a problem, if one is aware of the commercial realities attached to the show. And indeed we have some fine examples of such shows in the UK and long may they continue, but by their very nature they must, to some degree, be exclusive and not inclusive. For an industry to truly work together and put on a united voice without agendas or bias is a difficult thing to achieve – human nature and self-interest usually come into the equation. I would suggest though that we, as a collective small industry, really owe it to the companies that manufacture the products, the retailers who sell them, the media who write about them and to the customers who buy them, to put aside our differences, our biases and our agendas and work together to put on a show we can all be proud of.

An independently run national audio show is what we need. “But wait,” I hear you cry, “There is a show called exactly that, The National Audio Show and it’s organised by an exhibition company.” Yes there is, but let’s be brutally honest here, it is the National Audio Show in name only – many of the major brands and media don’t exhibit there for whatever reason and so it can’t claim to be representative of the whole industry. And that’s a real shame, for its location is excellent in the middle of the country, the venue has plenty of space for small or large companies to exhibit and the organisers just want as many brands there as possible without exclusions. So why not take this and build on it to make a proper national show? After all, if it can work in Germany why on Earth can’t it be done here?

Sound IdeaThe Clarity Alliance works for the industry. Our membership criteria is really simple – if you have an interest in the UK Hi-Fi industry surviving and prospering you can and should be a member. We are totally inclusive in that respect and so the idea of a representative apolitical show is music to our ears. That’s why we have teamed up with the organisers of the National Audio Show, to help them work to build it into the show that so many people have said they want. Clarity has taken a very large suite on the first floor and is offering space within it, free of charge, to its manufacturer members for static display of their products. This will give companies that have not previously exhibited at the show a chance to sample it for themselves and hopefully come away with positive feelings. We’ve also negotiated with the organisers for bedrooms and syndicate rooms to be made available to the members at a discounted rate, should they wish to also present active demonstrations. With more ‘name’ brands participating, the show should appeal to a broader audience. With more people visiting to see those brands, the justification for spending the show budget on space becomes simpler. It is a horrible cliché, but it is a win-win situation.

And if you’re not a Clarity member but think it is a good idea for the industry to work together and if you want to exhibit at the show, why not join the Alliance ahead of the show and participate in our free or discounted exhibition space scheme? Coupled with the rest of the benefits of membership, it could be one of the best uses of your marketing budget.

SVI HOME CINEMA SPEAKERS

Bringing the noise in a beautiful and balanced way to the ears of film enthusiasts everywhere, get set for serious cinema…

Face it, unless your clients are solely fans of silent cinema and the stars of yesteryear, there’s an excellent chance they’ll also want an awesome audio system to provide the ear-entertainment for the home cinema eye-candy kit you’d just specified. Indeed, eye-amazing images are all well and good, but they’re just a confusion of colour and movement without some equally audacious audio to add the aural oomph necessary to raise a room to true home cinema status.

Naturally, at the ear-user-end of the audio sits the speakers – those stalwarts of sound that come in shapes and sizes to suit all ends, spaces, budgets and systems. Whether hidden away in walls and ceilings or proudly on display, dotted around the seating like some sonic Stonehenge, there’s an air-moving option for every installation. So if you’re seeking a new solution to cinematic sound, lend your ear to this lot…

SOUNDSCINEMATIC

Uniting Monitor Audio’s latest engineering with beautifully slender design in a wide range of real wood and high gloss piano finishes, the newest Silver evolution offers an exceptional balance of performance, versatility, lifestyle appeal and value.

Launched at the end of last year the newest additions to the eight model-strong Silver range advances the art of midmarket speaker and include refined features introduced by the brand’s prestigious Platinum and Gold series speakers, and recent innovations in driver engineering.

The Silver series is now composed of: two stand mount models, the Silver 1 and 2; three floor speakers, the Silver 6, 8, 10; and dedicated centre, ‘FX’ surround and active subwoofer models.

While Silver 1, 2, 6, centre and FX retain the form factor of their predecessors, the Silver 8 becomes a full three way design, and new to the Silver family, the Silver 10 tower offers an up-scaled floor-standing format, featuring twin 8-inch bass drivers for a deeper more dynamic and consistent response in larger rooms.

Incorporating new bass and mid-range drivers, unlike conventional cones which incorporate a centre aperture for the voice-coil, the dimpled RST (Rigid Surface Technology) C-CAM cones deployed by the Silver series take the form of a continuous uninterrupted radiating dish having inherently greater strength and area. The voice coil sits beneath and is coupled to a larger motor by an innovative, more efficient drive assembly. Extensive research and FEA modelling have helped us to determine the ideal mechanical relationships required to increase excursion and power handling while reducing distortion for a more dynamic and accurate response.

In addition, the Silver 8 and 10 models feature a newly developed 4-inch mid-range driver, operating in its own damped and optimised enclosure to provide accurate mid frequencies. It features a short voice coil ‘under-hung’ in relation to the magnetic gap to ensure that the coil remains inside the gap at all times for significantly reduced modulation and extremely low distortion.

Distortion from air compression at the back of a tweeter dome has been eliminated by Silver’s new 25mm C-CAM tweeter design, which vents internally around the outside of the magnet system into a large rear-loading chamber, producing much lower resonance and better overall damping. The frequency response from the new tweeter is more accurate at lower frequencies for a smoother more natural handover with the mid/bass driver. Meanwhile high frequency extension has been improved and break-up reduced by improvements in cone geometry and drive mechanism.

Cabinets, meanwhile, are of 20mm MDF throughout (25mm for W12 subwoofer) – up from 19mm RX – and in conjunction with bolt-through driver bracing, employ additional radial and cross-bracing for high rigidity and low colouration. All new Silver models are available in a choice of premium quality real wood Rosenut, Walnut, Natural Oak, and Black Oak veneers, together with high-gloss black and white finishes, new Silver sets an elevated standard of excellence in music and film systems for the home.

Approximate retail prices (inc. VAT) (High Gloss): Silver 1 (pair) £500.00 £550.00; Silver 2 (pair) £650.00 £715.00; Silver 6 (pair) £1000.00 £1100.00; Silver 8 (pair) £1250.00 £1,375.00; Silver 10 (pair) £1500.00 £1650.00; Silver FX (pair) £500.00 £550.00; Silver Centre (each) £375.00 £413.00; Silver W12 (each) £1000.00 £1100.00www.monitoraudio.com

QUESTED LT8ISQuested’s new LT8iS is the latest model to join the company’s increasing successful Consumer Install line for high-end home cinemas.

“Quested has pursued Reference performance from our monitors for over 20 years,” says Quested owner Guy Lewis. “Roger Quested’s no-compromise approach put the Quested name on the map, worldwide. Abbey Road have recently installed one of our 4-way systems into Studio 3; in fact their fourth big system from us over the years.

“With an increasing number of home cinema specialists installing Quested’s larger-scale offerings, we have been asked again and again for smaller, versatile speakers which give our Studio Reference performance, but over greater distances. This new variant is in response to installers who love the original LT8, but want it in a package less than 150mm deep for invisible mounting between wall joists.”

2012’s LT10 was the foundation of a new range which was expanded recently with the LT20, and now the slim, surround variant of the LT8, with its high-performance 8x38mm ribbon tweeter and custom 8-inch driver.

“The LT’s utilise a ribbon technology that gives us the higher SPL needed for longer-throw applications such as surround environments, Post Production theatres, and behind-screen placement,” continues Guy. “We still spend a small fortune on components for the crossover, but people can really hear a real difference in the tests we have done, whether the LT8 or LT8iS are used as a centre, mains or surround speakers. The baby LT24 and the bigger LT8 and LT10s are really generating some great conversations for us with people who want clarity and dynamic performance at higher SPLs. www.quested.com

SUNFIRE RANGESunfire are synonymous in home theatre for providing quality, clarity, versatility and luxury in speakers, something clearly seen in their full range of cinema speakers and subwoofers.

Managing to create the seemingly impossible from a tiny cabinet, Sunfire’s sound-makers are able to put out as much power as an equivalent, extremely large woofer in a very sizable cabinet. They’ve achieved this by engineering their drivers to product a large amount of movement, 5x more than a conventional woofer in fact, and this 2.5-inches of excursion means these smaller woofers can move a lot more air, producing more bass. Magnets designed specifically for this purpose, with a weight 10x greater than conventional drivers, generate this movement, thus allowing the drivers to operate away from the stall mode, making them far more efficient than this woofer size would normally generate.

An excellent example of this is Sunfire’s Atmos subwoofer or ‘baby boomer’. Designed to give the best possible low-frequency sound quality for a home theatre experience, it incorporates a tremendously powerful 1400W built-in amplifier and a pair of 6.5-inch drivers to produce tight, floor-rumbling, denture-rattling bass that you can feel as well as hear. The Atmos has an automatic equalisation system which tailors output to compensate for any room effects. To best accommodate the longer ‘throw’ of the Atmos woofer, Sunfire engineers designed a unique Asymmetrical Cardiod Surround, which allows tight, well-defined bass that combines extreme output with very low distortion and a quality of sound that is unique to Atmos; another state-of-the-art advancement artfully executed and timelessly designed.

The speaker is the last component in the sound chain, and placement will dramatically affect the brilliance of the home theatre. Sunfire’s Cinema Ribbon range of on-wall and in-wall cinema speakers, featuring their patented Ribbon Tweeter technology, allow Sunfire to produce audiophile quality from a very small form factor speaker enclosure. With power handling up to 400W Sunfire introduces the CRW-2 and CRW-2C, specifically designed for built-in home

theatre applications where space limitations are a principal concern. Featuring ultra-thin profiles and twice the output of any other ribbon in-wall speaker, the line includes left and right channel models as well as a powerful centre-channel design. What’s more, the Duo In-Walls feature the same acclaimed Sunfire technologies as their larger sibling, the CRW-3. Technologies like Sunfire’s legendary High Back-emf woofers which produce massive amounts of sound

PMC TWENTY.26Attendees at the High End Show in Munich last month will have come across PMC presenting the European debut of the twenty.26, a new addition to the hugely popular twenty series loudspeaker range, which brings the benefits of three way speaker design to show visitors and raises the bar, yet again, for speakers in this category.

Since its launch in 2011, to mark PMC’s 20th anniversary, the twenty series has received widespread acclaim from reviewers, retailers and the consumer alike. The five models in the existing range, the twenty.21, 22, 23, 24 and twenty.C have, between them, collected no fewer than 21 five-star, five-globe, editor’s choice and outstanding product reviews in the UK alone. The range has also picked up numerous ‘Product of the Year’ and ‘Best Speaker’ awards from around the globe.

The new pinnacle of the twenty series, the twenty.26 features the same traits as its siblings – finesse, delicacy and musicality – but with an added ability to convey huge dynamic impact and the sheer scale of a musical performance. This exceptional, well-conceived design excels with a vast array of amplification due to its ease of drive and well-tempered balance; and its transparency ensures that users improving other elements of their signal path will appreciate the full benefit of their upgrades. This is a model that takes every musical style in its stride, and delivers the greatest level of clarity of any of the twenty series, or indeed of any speaker in this class.www.pmc-speakers.com

FORGOT ABOUT DRAY?Ever-expanding omni-AV and automation kit distributor Habitech has announced an extension of its DrayTek range to further bolster the company’s highly successful ProNet platform of networking products and training. Joining Ruckus and an established line of DrayTek routers in the ProNet product pool is a five-strong range of DrayTek Ethernet switches, complemented by a uniquely capable ADSL Ethernet Modem and a range of DrayTek accessories.

Habitech’s new range of DrayTek ‘VigorSwitch’ 1U Ethernet switches includes two 8-port PoE devices, the P-1080 and the P-1090 with extended power PoE+ on four ports. Also included are three 24-port Gigabit switches, the G-1260, the G-2260, which is a fully-managed Layer 2 device, and the P-2261, a fully-managed Layer 2 design with PoE capability.

The DrayTek Vigor 120 is a true ADSL Ethernet Modem. Unlike other modems which provide only PPPoE native bridging and then use NAT or multiple public IP addresses to create an onward client connection for a secondary device, the Vigor 120 is a genuine PPPoE to PPPoA bridge, providing the secondary device (firewall, router or PC) with a direct fully manageable IP connection, making setup easy. IPv6 and IPv4 compatible, the Vigor 120 is the ideal partner for DrayTek dual-WAN products.

Habitech’s enhanced DrayTek line-up will strengthen its ability to provide the

UK CI industry with the means to design and supply powerful, reliable and secure networks.

Commenting Habitech MD Jonathan Pengilley said: “The potential for new business in the home networking market is huge, but when you’re dealing with Gigabit file transfers the dangers of under-specifying are very real. Get the infrastructure right and you’ll open the door to higher-margin sales and have a customer for life. We’re boosting our DrayTek line and our ProNet support initiative to help our integrators avoid the pitfalls and add genuine, enduring value to their business.”T: +44 (0)1420 540054www.habitech.co.uk

HOT HDMI HANDLERDesigned for when a single HDMI source signal is being shared to multiple HDMI sink devices (HDTV displays, monitors, AVRs or projectors), the HDMI Signal Manager from HDanywhere ensures that each sink gets the type of HDMI signal that’s best suited to its capabilities, by either up or downscaling video and audio to match.

The HDMI Signal Manager is a veritable Swiss Army knife for the installer of HDMI devices. Where other brands produce endless SKUs of widgets, we have produced one – the ‘HDCSM’. A single HDMI box that does everything you need to make HDMI behave how you want it to at a display location. It’s a fixer device, a resolver of HDMI issues when it comes to video and audio, resolution or format. It contains a powerful signal processor that can up or downscale HDMI resolutions + de-embed, downmix and re-embed the HDMI audio stream. It’s a widget, a gizmo, a gadget that is hard to summarise, so here’s what it does one function at a time:

KIT & KABOODLEThe CYP PU-442PL-KIT is a 4x6 HDBaseT™ Lite Matrix utilising four HDMI inputs and four HDBaseT outputs over a single CAT5e/6/7 cable (up to 60-metres) for each output, plus two additional HDMI outputs. All six outputs are independent allowing any source to be distributed to any output. The HDBaseT outputs feature Power over Ethernet (PoE) functionality and allow the user to power the supplied PU-515PL-RX receivers without the need for a separate mains power supply.

Supporting the transmission of video (resolutions up to 1080p Full HD and 1920x1200 @60Hz), PoE, 2-way IR, multi-channel digital audio, and control via IR, RS-232, or Web GUI/Telnet IP, use the IP control feature of the PU-442PL-KIT to enable users to access and control the matrix remotely and also allow additional options for integration of third-party control systems.www.cypeurope.com

HDMI Audio De-embedding – Audio is extracted from the HDMI datastream.HDMI Audio Down-mixing – The de-embedded audio is output as both 5.1 via an optical port and down-mixed 2.0ch stereo via a 3.5mm headphone jack port.HDMI Video Resolution Scaling – The signal manager can up or downscale the video on the input to match that required on the HDMI display connected to the output. It has three video options 1. Fixed 1080p/60 2. Fixed 720p/60 3. AUTO, which scales to the highest resolution of the sink based on the EDID of the connected device.HDMI Audio Embedding – users can select what audio format (multi-channel or stereo) is embedded back onto the HDMI signal for the HDMI output port.

INVISION AMP Available now from Invision UK comes the second-generation of multi-room amplifiers from RTI. The AD-4x and its bigger brother the AD-8x feature a number of new updates that integrators will love. The existing features of 25W per channel of Class D ‘Cool Power’ output and RS232 control remain with the additional benefits of RCA pre-outs, manual input trim level adjustment and IP control. But by far the biggest upgrade is to the hardware giving the ability of zone grouping.

David Meyerowitz product specialist Invision UK explains: “The new features RTI have added are all of great benefit to integrators. Being able to adjust input levels is vital to giving a pleasurable listening experience for your customers. By having this adjustment switching from different sources won’t result in any unwanted jumps in volume. I feel the most exciting update is the zone grouping facility. This is a feature that most clients wish to have from there multi-room audio system. By grouping zones together you can create a whole-home listening mode where a single source can be distributed to every zone in the house. But, crucially for the end user, is easily controlled by a single volume button or slider. RTI have created the two-way AD-64 driver making this feature easy to program using the award winning Integration Designer software, when coupled with one of RTI’s control processors.”

With the added IP control feature integrators can access the amplifiers configuration page via a web browser allowing quick setup and calibration from a laptop or tablet. This means you can tailor the equalisation settings live from the room making for a totally accurate setup process.T: +44 (0)1359 270 280E: [email protected]

GETTING PERSONAL Cambridge-based Janus Technology has upped the smart ante by announcing its integration of the Invixium Biometric Access devices into the smarthome, meaning that it’s no longer a case of ‘one automation fits all’. Now, thanks to the industry’s most advanced fingerprint access control device and Janus’s software skills, the smarthome can recognise individual people and personalise the experience.

“This is a very significant development for us,” said Managing Director Richard Caton. “The IXM Mycro allows us to truly personalise the automation experience. Coupled with the imminent launch of the IXM Touch with advanced intercom and text-to-speech capabilities, it’s going to be an exciting year.”

Janus Technology has been busy of late and last month launched a brand new website detailing the full range of services that it provides to integrators and manufacturers. The new site includes a dealer portal via which dealers can access the latest Janus drivers for Control4, RTI, Crestron and AMX, together with licence purchase and online licence key delivery. A nice feature of the new website is ‘Request-a-driver’ where dealers can enter their wish-list for drivers, and if demand is high, then Janus will develop them.

As experienced consultants in the rapidly expanding smarthome market, Janus offer a full range of services to manufacturers, system integrators and professional installers. Their unique advantage in this market sector is their extensive knowledge of the Custom Installation industry, combined with a comprehensive background in software engineering and systems design.

Other services provided by Janus include the design of systems for a variety of different commercial and residential applications, including iOS and Android app development, the evaluation of technology alternatives and recommendation on the best fit to your project requirements, and the offering of advice on the design of new equipment, e.g. specifying a protocol that will work well with control systems.T: +44 (0)1223 833 852www.janustechnology.co.uk

applications. Additional features include voice recognition, high-performance H.264 video, Rava™ SIP intercom, web-browsing, audio feedback, and advanced Smart Graphics™.

Using the bracket provided, the TSW-1052 installs easily over a 2-gang or 3-gang electrical box, or a 2-gang European electrical box. It can also be attached directly to drywall and other surfaces over the front of a 2-3/8-inch H x 3-3/8-inch W (60mm H x 86mm W) cut-out. When installed, it protrudes just half an inch from the mounting surface and is magnetically adhered to its mounting bracket, eliminating any visible screws for an ultra-clean appearance.

Crestron also offers the TSW-UMB Universal Mounting Bracket, which provides a post-construction wall-mounting solution that can accommodate a variety of current and future Crestron devices, including the TSW-1052. The TSW-UMB makes it easy to change devices at any time without having to cut or patch the wall, or order any additional mounting hardware. Or, for a pre-construction mounting solution, the TSW-UMB can be used along with a TSW-UMB-PMK Pre-Construction Mounting Kit. Masonry and concrete applications can be accommodated using the TSW-UMB along with a TSW-550-BBI back box.

Replacing an older Crestron touch screen with a new TSW-1052 can be made simple using a TSW-RMB Retrofit Mounting Bracket. A variety of adapter brackets are available to enable easy installation of the TSW-1052 right over the existing back box, mounting kit, or cut-out and, finally, using the optional TableTop Kit (TSW-1050-TTK), the TSW-1052 becomes a stylish, freestanding touch screen that fits perfectly on a table, desk, or countertop. Shipping this month, (June) it can even be permanently attached to the surface using the optional Swivel Mount Kit (TSW-550/750/1050-SMK).www.crestron.eu

SVI CASE STUDY: M.E.G.A. AVL

FRENCHA repeat job for an existing music and movie-loving client for whom M.E.G.A. AV had previous kitted out a central London apartment few years ago, the latest project for which a whole-house smart AV system was required proved to be something a bit different – to be installed, as it was, in a stunning Château in Cognac, France.

Composed of five buildings in an amazing surrounds in southwest France, the main house was to serve as a small, 5-star boutique hotel with an owner’s master suite, the Summerhouse was to be transformed into home cinema/music room, and the big barn to be used for various events such as weddings, wine and cognac tasting and other promotions. The remaining buildings would house a wine cellar, gym, stables and garage.

The main brief was straightforward enough – music everywhere; and make it simple. For this task, M.E.G.A. employed a NuVo Grand Concerto 8 zone master controller and NuVo 8 zone expander with two additional NuVo 4x 60W amplifiers for the Salon and master suite. A NuVo Music Port Elite now provides thousands of internet radio stations, alongside an internal hard drive which is packed with music. Adding to this is a twin FM NuVo tuner for local radio, all fired out through no fewer than 26 Kef Ci200QR top of the range speakers, with Kef backboxes installed throughout the house. The larger, more open

areas, such as the kitchen, dining and sitting-room are each fitted with eight speakers so that the listener never feels far away from the music. Even the wine cellar and degustation areas are fitted with a dedicated pair of speakers!

Each zone was also fitted with NuVo OLED wall panels, and every guest bedroom has a local amp wired into system for clients to plug in their phones or laptops for personalised music choice, whilst the multi-room system offer access to 80,000 internet radio stations as well as that aforementioned QNAP 12TB NAS drive complete with hundreds of CDs in uncompressed wav format.

M.E.G.A. also installed an old Imerge S3000 music server in the cinema room as the client has an identical one in London with the same library and was more than happy with what they had. The Imerge also acts as another NAS drive and the whole system is configured so that when the client uploads new CDs into his Imerge in London, it is automatically copied to QNAP server in France over the internet.

Discreet ScreensThe client did not want TVs in each bedroom, so there are only two screens in the main house, but even with this being the case, all bedrooms were still pre-wired for standard TV as well as IP TV if required in the future. Firstly, a massive 65-inch Panasonic 65VX300 was installed in the salon, mounted on a pull-out and swivel Future Automation bracket. As the room is quite large and the TV was to be set up in the corner, covering only part of the room, M.E.G.A. paired it with Yamaha’s YSP-5100 sound projector.

A custom-made AV wall was designed and constructed to house both the screen and the Yamaha sound projector, the latter being hidden away behind stretched acoustic fabric. At the bottom of the unit sits DVD and Blu-ray

Taking a traditional Château in Cognac and transforming it into a seat of 21st Century sound and cinema, M.E.G.A. AV say vive la digital difference…

A horse! A horse! My salon needs a horse!

One of only two TVs the owner wanted distracting from the free flow of conversation

Frankly, M.E.G.A. AV did give a damn.

storage, whilst, hidden within the AV wall itself is an XBMC streamer, URC Ethernet controller and HDAnywhere HDMI/Ethernet balun. The second TV is a small Samsung Smart screen located in the sitting area.

TV distribution is handled by HDAnywhere’s Multi Room 4x4 HDMI over HDBaseT matrix, located in a main rack, with sources made up of a Sky HD+ box, Dreambox HD800, Sony Blu-ray and Apple TV.

Room with a ViewLocated in the old timber and stone Summerhouse, the Cinema room was an area where the client and designer wanted to preserve as much as possible of the original charm and look. As it was impossible to mount surround speaker on the walls, M.E.G.A. decided to look to the ceiling – a decision that came with its own problems. As she old timber ceiling was also the upstairs floor, holes could not be cut to build the speakers in. Instead MDF boxes were built, filled with high-density rockwool, and Sonance SUR1S speakers were mounted inside (as this Sonance model is of a closed design, mounting them inside MDF boxes would not interfere with their performance). These were then suspended using single steel rods, screwed to the floor/ceiling.

A timber and MDF baffle wall was then constructed to hold the Sonance Cinema Series LCR2 L/C/R speakers and massive 150-inch Screen Excellence Enlightor 4K fixed frame screen.

An Onkyo PR SC5509 AV Processor and Onkyo PA MC5501 9ch. Power Amp were specified to take care of the audio side, and everything was wired with Chord speaker cable and high-speed Chord HDMI cable.

Finally, an award-winning Panasonic PT-AT6000 HD 3D projector was installed with an option to upgrade at a later stage. However, the client is more than impressed with the projector/screen combination and quality of picture and feels that an upgrade shouldn’t be necessary.

Brandy-based BrillianceThe home network plays a massive role in the house. Split into several LANs with different access priorities for guests and owners, it is capable of 10GB speed and the whole property is covered with 120 wall-mounted Ethernet points and five Wi-Fi wireless access points in the buildings and garden. Four Cisco Switchers and four 24-way Ethernet patch bays are housed in the bottom half of the main house AV Rack.

Control for this expansive AV set-up was split between two URC Complete Control MX5000i touch screen remotes (one for main house and one for cinema), NuVo OLED wall panels and Apple iPad.

The client (being an avid audiophile with an enviable high-end, two channel set-up in the cinema room) was extremely surprised with the sound quality achieved in the main house – which goes to show how attention to small details, such as good speaker cable, proper ceiling back boxes and good positioning, make all the difference.

An installation success in all areas, classical music sounds especially good in a big salon room, helped by room size and its natural reverberation and, by night, the whole Château is now filled with intimate, uncompressed audiophile-pleasing audio!www.megaavinstallations.com

Since gaining recognition for Home Technology Integrators with the JIB (Joint Industry Board) last month, CEDIA has issued nine Electrotechnical Certification Scheme Related Discipline cards, helping residential custom installers gain access to construction sites and prove identification, competence and qualification levels.

Custom installers require access to construction sites on a regular basis but can be prevented from entering the site if they do not hold valid identification documents. The ECS card is a simple and effective way to overcome this problem as is the recognised ID and competence card scheme for anyone working in the electrotechnical field in the UK. As an ECS Health and Safety assessment centre, CEDIA can now help home technology integrators to qualify for the ECS card.

To support this development, CEDIA has created the ‘Health & Safety Guidelines – Your Corporate Responsibility’ which is free to download from the CEDIA website to both members and non-members www.cediaeducation.com/resources/whitepapers

CEDIA has revealed the short-listed finalists in the prestigious 2014 CEDIA Awards, which celebrates the best media room, home cinema, integrated home and superyacht installations from across Region 1 (the UK, Europe, the CIS, the Middle East, Africa, India and Pakistan). The project shortlist for 2014 CEDIA Awards, by category, is as follows:

CAN’T WAIT UNTIL JULY 4TH FOR THE NEXT ISSUE?

INDUSTRY INSIGHTIMAGINE THIS

CAN YOU BRIEFLY INTRODUCE IMAGINE THIS?Imagine This operates at the top level of the industry. We do so by taking on fewer projects and dedicating the necessary time and resources to each of these jobs to make them a success.

We are very fortunate to have had success in various awards schemes, so we do have a sense of pride and an overwhelming urge to keep our standards high.

YOU’VE BEEN CEDIA MEMBERS FOR A LONG TIME, WHY DO YOU THINK IT PAYS TO BE PART OF THE ASSOCIATION?In 2002, becoming an ESP CEDIA member was top of my list of priorities and we have never looked back. I wanted to belong to a trade organisation that conveys my message to the people that matter – the homeowners, architects and designers of homes. CEDIA is doing this in a structured way, but this takes time, energy and resources, and you must not forget that as an industry we are still very young.

Every CI business owner knows only too well the challenges that reside within this industry, so just imagine how difficult, and sometimes political, it might be to support so many dealers with different views, motives and requests. Having said all that, I think the CEDIA team has steered the organisation admirably and in a cohesive way.

All I want from my trade association is the knowledge that we are trying to reach a goal that is universally beneficial with nationally recognised qualifications and have participation in standards development and codes of practice, along with grass roots support for the members. I can officially tell you that CEDIA is doing all of this.

From the awards to the training, it is all geared up for the members with the overall goal of delivering excellence in to the CI market through a respected trade body. As expected, there will also be some members who say “They don’t do anything for me” or “I’m not a CEDIA member and we do alright” and I understand all of those comments. But maybe the question should be “What is their business model?”, “How do you want their business to develop?” and “How do you propose that you reach your goals?”

CEDIA RECENTLY GAINED ECS RECOGNITION. HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK THE ELECTROTECHNICAL CERTIFICATION SCHEME IS?This is something that the CEDIA education council and I have driven to the front of the priority list, and CEDIA has now been able to push it through to

fruition which is great news for the industry. The overall goal, as far as I’m concerned is to have ‘nationally recognised qualifications’ and a formal apprenticeship structure. I believe that the ECS card is the first but very important step along this road. For those who venture out onto projects and install equipment, I can’t stress how much of a step forward this really is.

In the constant attempt to be looked upon by other industry professionals as a recognised trade then this, along with the new BS8590:2014 Standards Code of Practice document, mean that we no longer show up as the ‘dark arts’ but a recognised and approved trade with the relevant skills to operate on a building site safely and efficiently.

These developments show that CEDIA is best placed to create a strong, trusted and respected trade organisation for all of its members by delivering first class, nationally recognised training and contribute to standard development that will be used by all.

SO YOU WOULD RECOMMEND CEDIA MEMBERS AND OTHER HOME TECH-TYPES GET THEMSELVES TO AN ECS HEALTH AND SAFETY ASSESSMENT CENTRE ASAP?Yes, absolutely. For a professional well-run company, I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t. There will always be the people out there who think it isn’t for them or they’ve never been asked to produce any form of competency. If I’m honest, that’s half the problem. They will be the main reason for other people’s negative perception of our industry.

DO YOU SEE A TIME WHEN CARRYING THE CARD WILL BE MANDATORY FOR GAINING SITE ACCESS?Yes I do. Without an ECS card you leave your company open to avoidable issues. Gaining access to a building site requires, at the very least, PPE (hard hat and boots) and an ECS card. It is the bare minimum an employer should do and an operative should strive to achieve. On most sites if you don’t have a card, you won’t have access to the job, simple as that.

SO WHAT DO INTEGRATORS AND INSTALLERS DO NEXT TO GET CERTIFIED?Call the CEDIA office, or visit www.cediaeducation.com/hands and book onto the one-day Health and Safety course which is held at CEDIA HQ in St. Neots.

CEDIA supplied each member with a free education voucher earlier this year when membership was renewed. If you haven’t yet used it, why not book onto this course?www.cedia.co.ukwww.imaginethis.uk.com
