Phew, what a scorcher! – as The Sun might say in its everyman-aping manner, when not, allegedly, busy hacking your phone. And, indeed, it would be correct, for not only have we watched summer return to these fair isles, cracking the pavements everywhere from Pwllheli to Pimlico, but we’ve also watched the World Cup kick-off in the far-too scorching stadiums of Brazil and stared in an unblinking nervous sweat through almost two full games before England crashed out in spectacular style, generously allowing us all to stash the idiotic optimism away for another four years and get back to work. A real ScorchaRooney! – as is the term nobody got chance to invent.

So, with our glorious Group-Stagers back home and the pressure for the nation to perform off, it’s back to business as per usual, save for the fact that my natural second team in the tournament, Ecuador, are still in at time of writing.

Has it also been a hot month in the industry? Hotter than a heatwave in Hell, than chilli-flavoured fire, than a Scarlett Johansson-on-Scarlett Johansson sexy session on the sun – and that’s hot. For a start we’ve seen a towering inferno of top new tech roar out covering all aspects of AV, Install and the app-means to control it, some sizzling home cinema seating, an absolute slew of, metaphorically, on-fire AV Furniture, and even the unveiling of Yamaha’s sizzlingly hot YSP-2500 soundbar.

On top of all this came Crestron’s Cobham-HQ-based InfoComm and footie fiesta, during which the advanced automation experts served up beer, burgers and Belgium waffles while we all watched England and Costa Rica battle to a thrilling draw – national pride aside, the highlight of a month of heat indeed!

I’m going to go and cool off now the only way I know how – by stripping down to my Only Way Is Essex-inspired Schlong-thong and having Bontell hose me down with iced gin. Catch you on August 1st for the next round…

CIE’S HALF-CENTURY

The Who-What-Where-When-Why of AV and CI

Industry News

Shooting up in the UK CI sector like someone on a really late-life growth spurt, Arcam has announced that the company is now working directly with residential custom installation businesses in offering its range of reliable, high-quality AV products for home cinemas and media rooms. Arcam is supporting this move with investment in a dedicated sales resource, headed by Alan Davidson.

Having spent the last five years researching, developing and testing an impressive portfolio of AV receivers, pre and power amps, Arcam now provides a complete catalogue of products for the CI sector. As Sales Manager for the CI community, Alan

Davidson will be working directly with CI companies to help them with product selection, specification and integration.

“Over the last few years, we’ve maintained our profile in the CI industry with the help and support of AWE,” says Alan. “Now, with a class-leading range of receivers, pre-processors and power amps, perfect for CI projects, we can help installers truly bring music and movies to life. The time is right for us to now sell direct to the community and I’m looking forward to working with those installers that recognise the importance of audiophile quality.”E: [email protected]

ARCAM ANSWER CALL OF INSTALL

Celebrating its 50th anniversary year in the professional AV industry this September, leading UK distributor CIE-Group is marking the occasion by embarking on its biggest charity challenge ever – entering three teams to take on a 550-mile cycle challenge across France… in just three days! The teams – made up of CIE-Group Directors and members of the AV sales and technical support staff – will cycle from St. Malo in the North of France to Bordeaux in the South.

This will be the seventh year that CIE-Group staff has taken on a charity cycle challenge, having so far raised in excess of £13,000 for Cancer Research, The British Heart Foundation and local children’s charity Derby Kids’ Camp.

All three teams – riding under the ‘HDBaseTeam’ banner – are sponsored by UK AV Signal Distribution brand CYP, with the team name giving a nod towards the vast range of HDBaseT products launched by CYP over the past two years.

This will be the second year of sponsorship from CYP and CYP Sales Manager Gareth Rolls is a particularly enthusiastic supporter: “It gives us great pride at CYP to sponsor the CIE-Group team for their 50th anniversary cycle challenge. The dedication and commitment to fundraising and the promotion of the charities of which they are passionate about, is truly awe-inspiring. Everyone here at CYP will be following the teams’ progress and willing them on through the arduous three day ride. We encourage everyone in the AV industry and beyond to pledge their support by donating to this fantastic cause and help the team continue to change lives for the better.”

The three HDBaseTeams will leave the UK on Wednesday 25th September, cycling from St. Malo in the early hours of Thursday 26th, with the aim of reaching Bordeaux in the rather later hours of Saturday 28th.

Cycle Team Captain (and CIE’s Group Sales Director), Steve Collin explains: “Reaching our 50th anniversary is a huge milestone for CIE-Group and it is important to the company and the staff to mark the occasion with an event that we can all be proud of, for many more years to come. Our three chosen charities have been there for many staff members over the Company’s years and we want to make a huge effort to show our gratitude.”

Cycle Team member and CIE-Group Marketing Director, Chris Edwards, has a very personal attachment to the Company’s adopted local charity Derby Kids’ Camp: “For the past 14 years I have been volunteering for the charity which provides free holidays to many of the local area’s most disadvantaged young children. Over the years, I have had the pleasure to work with thousands of young children to provide them with what is most likely the first holiday they have ever experienced.”

CIE’s HDBaseTeam urge all readers, customers, friends and colleagues to please ‘Give a little to help a lot’ this year simply by texting HDBT50, £5 to 70070, or by donating online at@ www.justgiving.com/HDBaseTeam-2014www.cie-group.com/hdbaseteam.php

THE ASSOCIATION ASSESSES INSTALLSeeking to keep an extra keen eye on the industry, CEDIA has re-appointed industry specialist Parks Associates to carry out extensive market research into the UK residential custom installation sector for the third consecutive year, with the project running from the June 20th until September 30th.

Designed to assess the health and future prospects for the sector, the research will quantify companies currently installing residential custom installation products, determine the size of the industry, evaluate the total economic value of installation and report on general market conditions and project metrics.

This market research provides an essential tool for growing companies to understand what products are actively sought, to distinguish key market trends and helps custom installers to decide where to focus their initiative. In previous years, approximately a quarter of the industry has participated in this survey.

As before CEDIA will be calling upon the home technology industry to support its efforts in accruing valuable data. Participants will have the opportunity to win a range of prizes including three VIP tickets to ISE 2015 and one grand prize which will be revealed in the coming months. To take part in the survey, links will be distributed and supported directly through CEDIA communications and via CEDIA trade supplier members.

For more information or to download full market research reports from 2011/12 and 2012/13, visit: www.cedia.co.uk/market-research

A G THINGStockholm-based audio retailer Audio Concept has recently opened the doors to its newly refurbished showroom in the centre of the city. At 456m² this remarkable showroom is not only one of the largest specialist shops in Europe devoted to high-end audio, but also one of the most original and creative. Amongst the range of audio equipment showcased is a 15.2 surround sound demo system that features Genelec G Series loudspeakers and an Illusonic IAP 16 processor.

Offering a complete audio system service from initial consultation and planning, through to installation, Robert Grubstad of Audio Concept has been working with Genelec monitors for many years and was well aware of their potential as residential loudspeakers as well as for multichannel purposes.

“When we chose the Illusonic IAP 16, a unique multichannel processor, we knew we would need a good speaker to match,” he says. “The Genelec G Series was the perfect choice as the company’s heritage in the professional audio sector has transferred seamlessly to their home audio range. With the combination of Illusonic and Genelec, we were able to create a 15.2 system which is the ultimate way for customers to experience a multichannel performance as it is meant to be heard, while also hearing the details of the room in which the piece was recorded.”

The 15.2 system installed at the showroom is made up 12 Genelec G Three speakers, three Genelec G Four speakers and two Genelec

Leading trade-only CI distributor Invision UK has recently welcomed no fewer than three new employees to its Suffolk Headquarters at a time of considerable growth and expansion. According to Invision the decision to expand the team is due to the influx of new business and the surge in product demand.

The new members join the dynamic office hub with each bringing a wealth of skills and expertise – Natalie Bonner joins as Marketing Coordinator and will be assisting across the marketing mix. Natalie brings digital, design and PR skills, forming an intrinsic part of the creative team. Will Feather has joined technical sales as Sales Specialist and brings with him a vast knowledge of everything AV. And Jane Constable has joined Invision’s accounts department as Credit Controller and is responsible for all account activity and setting up of new suppliers.

Michael Roberts, Business Manager at Invision says: “It’s an exciting time of growth at Invision and the additional staff members will provide a vital role in advancing our presence in the CI market in going forward. Our 2014 expansion plan is well underway and with our new members on board, we’ll be better equipped to meet the needs of the business and customer demand.”

7050B sub monitors. A major challenge for Robert when designing the 15.2 system was to make it simple enough that it would appeal to customers of all types.

“The risk is the system becomes too elaborate and can end up alienating some customers. The advantage of the G Series in this scenario is they are active monitors which minimises the need for additional ‘boxes’. They are also competitively priced, reliable and sound great,” he adds.

The G Series speakers deliver a powerful sound experience with all the benefits of an active loudspeaker design. The five models in the series feature a compact aluminium enclosure with easy connectivity to sources such as home cinema amplifier, PC, portable music player or multi-room system. Each model embodies the same positive attributes: neutrality of sound, accuracy of the soundstage and unsurpassed Genelec reliability. www.genelec.com

STAY SAFE WITH CEDIACEDIA has recently published the ‘UK Health & Safety-Your Corporate Responsibility’ whitepaper, to help inform and educate employers and employees about the safe working practices on construction sites.

‘UK Health & Safety-Your Corporate Responsibility’ highlights how employers are legally obliged to protect themselves and their team at all times and ensure they are capable and competent to carry out their duties, whilst being able to provide proof to relevant authorities when requested. Employers are legally required to implement a Safe System of Work. Failure in doing so can result in the closure of business and even expensive legal battles in the event of an incident. As well as covering details from the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007, the white paper explains exactly what is required in a Safe System of Work.

“The residential CI profession is one of many disciplines required on site during the various stages of a construction site,” comments CEDIA’s Operations Director, Matt Nimmons. “It’s important that installers understand the risks, and take the necessary to navigate these often hazardous environments as safely as possible. This white paper spells out the risks and the obligations for employers and their employees.”

The document also discusses the ECS occupational card scheme. CEDIA has recently formed an alliance with the ECS to create the ‘Home Technology Integrator’ ECS card. This is an ECS Related Discipline Card and entitles the holder to carry out unsupervised work on a building site. The whitepaper covers other useful resources, topics covered in CEDIA’s one-day Health & Safety Course and the importance of demonstrating the competence that owning an ECS card brings.

This new whitepaper is free to both members and non-members and is available for download from the CEDIA education website, via the link below. www.cediaeducation.com/resources/whitepapers

GIANT LEAPS FOR DEMOPADFollowing the successful launch of the CENTRO 8 processor, DemoPad is continuing to make its leap from an app based system to a fully fledged advanced home automation and control solution. Developments include the recent appointment of six key distributor partners throughout the UK, the opening of a dedicated training centre in Burton Upon Trent and several new 3rd party integration drivers for installers to take advantage of.

Phil Davis, Director of DemoPad sales across Europe, commented: “Progress to date has been excellent and we’ve been overwhelmed by the desire from distributors and installers to work with DemoPad. With nearly all training courses fully booked between now and September, our work is cut out to keep up with demand for the CENTRO 8 processor. The key opportunity for us at this stage is to ensure that DemoPad software seamlessly integrates will all leading manufacturers within the CI sector. I’m pleased to be able to announce today that DemoPad integration drivers are now available for Futronics Lighting and Heatmiser HVAC control systems, with several more to follow in the coming months.”

SOUND PARTNERSHIPHigh-end audio experts Audio Lounge of London have partnered with Nebula Nine, a company which has over 10 years’ experience installing the latest contemporary audio visual solutions. The announcement was made at an Audio Lounge event in association with SBID which saw interior designers learn about the partnership.

From bespoke apps to control home lighting and entertainment systems to smartphone control of the world’s best audio systems via fingerprint recognition, the new partnership creates a truly next generation offering of cutting edge technology with the ultimate in sonic hardware.

Audio Lounge MD, Ruth Phypers, says: “Home automation isn’t the future, it’s happening now. There’s been a change from traditional stereo, two-channel Hi-Fi to multi-room audio which also brought in highly compressed audio files. The recent change is interesting – people have the brilliant convenience of wireless music and smart devices but now want the quality back in terms of music systems and high resolution music. The Devialet D110 Hi-Fi system is a key example – it looks great, plays high resolution audio files and works with smart devices. A silver remote control or iPhone controls a slim, one-box Hi-Fi that you can hang on a wall like a mirror – all you need to do is choose the pair of speakers that suit your living space. We want to promote ease of use with great looking products without losing the integrity or performance of high-end systems.”www.audiolounge.co.ukwww.nebulanine.co.uk

SVI WHAT’S NEW?

10 www.svimag.com

What’sNew? SVI’s round-up of all the very latest product news. If it isn’t here, it isn’t happening…

Making music give more, British DAC specialist Computer Audio Design has launched a highly advanced new USB cable using patent-pending proprietary technology. The new CAD Cable is a high-quality no-compromise USB cable specifically designed to maximise sound quality from USB-equipped music playback systems. It has been painstakingly designed by CAD’s Scott Berry, a British-based US-born electrical engineer who has worked for some of the biggest names in the electronics world and is responsible for the design of the company’s iconic 1543 DAC.

Hand-made in London by CAD’s engineers, the new CAD Cable has been conceived to combat the high-frequency noise inherent in all computer audio sources. CAD’s engineers have undertaken extensive research in this critical area of HF noise reduction and have used several proprietary designs to address the issue.

CAD has employed unique technology in the design of the CAD Cable, to produce an exceptionally low-noise interconnect. The CAD Cable also offers consistency with CAD’s famous sonic neutrality and natural ‘analogue’ sound quality, as evidenced in the award-winning 1543 DAC.

Although little can be revealed about the proprietary technologies, the Cable uses a highly shielded independent cable for the power line, designed to mitigate the impact of high-frequency noise emanating from the computer’s USB power interface.

BIT OF A CAD

3 IS A MAGIC NUMBERFrom the land of Vikings, Lego, bacon and opening-sentence stereotypes comes Danish speaker brand Eltax and the new active, Bluetooth version of its highly successful, award-winning Monitor 3 bookshelf loudspeakers.

Famed for designing high-performance conventional loudspeakers at value-for-money prices, this latest version of the popular Monitor 3 monitor speaker sees the great Danes take its passive best-selling bookshelf loudspeaker and transform it into an active version with Bluetooth technology and multiple analogue and digital connections. The result is a powerful future-proof speaker system that can be used with a wide variety of devices either wired or wireless for today’s rapidly growing streaming market.

The Monitor 3 BT speakers feature a 25mm soft dome tweeter and 130mm mid bass driver reflex loaded through a slot design port to the front. The cabinet is an 18mm MDF construction finished in either black or white. An impressive connections list includes two digital inputs (one optical and one coaxial), two analogue inputs (one RCA and one mini-jack 3.5mm) and a subwoofer output. A remote control is also included.

Available now in the UK, the new Eltax Monitor 3 Bluetooth speakers weigh in at the highly competitive SRP of £199.99.www.eltax.com

POWER & CONTROLInvision UK has announced that it’ll now be offering the F1500UPS voltage regulator and backup power supply from Furman. Offering an AV system unparalleled battery back-up technology, created from the ground up to meet the exacting demands of the world’s most sensitive audio, video and control systems, while typical UPS systems feature antiquated surge suppression technologies that can cause as much damage and annoying lock-ups as they attempt to prevent, only the Furman offers battery back-up with road-proven SMP non-sacrificial, zero ground contamination surge suppression technology and EVS Extreme Voltage Shutdown.

Though many control devices are relatively immune to moderate levels of AC line noise, today’s more sensitive devices, such as DLP projectors, certainly are not. High-definition technologies have pushed resolution to levels so extreme that virtually any AC noise capable of coupling with your system’s signal will distort, mask, or destroy the performance advantages we all strive so hard to capture and reproduce. Once again, the F1500-UPS is different. While other UPS devices feature AC line filters suitable for an IT closet, only Furman employs their exclusive Linear Filtering Technology (LiFT) to four discrete isolated outlet banks. This advanced noise filtering technology assures that today’s ultra-wide dynamic range is maintained, as it must be pristine.

At 1500VA, the F1500-UPS provides substantial back-up time for most critical digital AV components, but if more capacity is needed, additional 1500VA battery packs (BATT1500E-EXT) may be daisy chained to double, triple, and further increase runtime as the application demands.

So why take chances? Any AV set-up worth its salt is worth protecting!T: +44 (0)1359 270 280E: [email protected]

The CAD Cable has been designed to bring dramatic benefits in musicality and naturalness to all digital audio systems, regardless of price. In fact, CAD is so confident music lovers will enjoy the CAD Cable it is offering a 30-day no-quibble money-back guarantee!

As with the rest of the G and F Series, loudspeakers and subwoofers, the G Fives are available in Polar White and Mystic Black and combine the same positive attributes that has seen Genelec remain an industry leader in the pro-audio sector for over 35 years: neutrality of the sound, accuracy of the soundstage and unsurpassed reliability.

Underpinned by Genelec’s commitment to sustainability and quality, the G Five comes with a five year warranty and features Harri Koskinen’s award-winning design in a compact aluminium housing. Room response controls are included for system calibration and the loudspeakers include Genelec’s intelligent power saving feature, ISS, which switches the loudspeakers to standby mode to save energy after a period of inactivity.

The new G Five will start shipping in the autumn.www.genelec.com

SVI PRODUCT FOCUS: YAMAHA YSP-2500

It’s been almost 10 years since Yamaha’s pioneering YSP-1 soundbar concept picked up the prestigious Best of Show at CES 2005, and if there’s one thing we know for certain now, it was no flash in the pan. Indeed, since then the soundbar idea has evolved from an innovative design to one of the fastest moving product categories in the CE industry.

Today, Yamaha keeps the innovation flowing with the announcement of an addition to their Soundbar line-up: the YSP-2500.

Building on the massive success of the award-winning, worldwide acclaimed YSP-2200 in several ways, the biggest improvement that the YSP-2500 brings is the incredible surround sound realism Yamaha produce, but that’s because Yammy take a different view of how they design their models, holding the thought that what they’re making is not just a soundbar but a sound projector, a home cinema alternative option for those with space or time considerations, and that’s what makes all the difference.

BEAM ME UPThe entire YSP Sound Projector line-up features Yamaha’s own Intellibeam technology, which measures the room and adjusts the Soundbar accordingly to bounce beams off the walls with the greatest precision, creating a true 7.1 surround sound environment.

And the best part is that it really works! With a YSP there’s no longer any need to consider where the rear speakers will go or if you can trail a cable around the room, or even if the speakers might get in the way – the YSP offers everyone the chance to have surround sound in their living room without the mess.

Featured on the new YSP is Yamaha’s world-renowned CinemaDSP, a technology that has been developed by Yamaha for over 25 years now to deliver a truly immersive and realistic surround sound-field experience. There

are 10 different programs to use on the new YSP- 2500, all of which are based on real places and real sound-fields, all measured and recorded by Yamaha in 3D so owners can enjoy the greatest possible home cinema sound experience when using CinemaDSP.

GET CONNECTEDYamaha have also improved the sonic quality of the YSP-2500, with the UK Yamaha team fine-tuning the YSP- 2500 to sound more like a UK Hi-Fi product without compromising on the surround sound realism. In the past, the Yamaha UK team has tuned several receivers and Hi-Fi amplifiers that have won industry awards and have achieved great success, so the opportunity to UK tune a sound projector is something they’ve been waiting to do, for a long time and the result is audibly astounding.

Connection-wise, the YSP-2500 features everything you would normally find on an AVR, including HDMI 3in/1out and support for 4K/60p pass-through with the latest HDMI version. You’ll also find a couple of legacy connections for older video and audio products so really you can think of the YSP-2500 as your AVR and speaker pack all in two boxes.

In a new addition, they’ve also added a wireless subwoofer and Bluetooth technology built into the bar itself, so now owners can stream music from their smart device straight to the bar. Plus, once connected via Bluetooth, users can take advantage of app control using the Yamaha HT Controller app, available free for Android and Apple devices. The app allows for the changing of inputs and selects DSP modes, but more importantly it can be used to fine-tune the auto calibration of YSP-2500 by simply dragging beams around the room.

With an SRP of £799.95, the stunning new YSP-2500 arrives into the UK late summer, ready to make audio in autumn absolutely awesome!http://uk.yamaha.com

HEOS TO DENON

PHILIPS ANTUMBRADISPLAY... ON DISPLAYThe launch of the Philips Dynalite AntumbraDisplay is here, with UK shipping starting in September. A new addition to the Philips Dynalite user interface range, the AntumbraDisplay has that wow-factor clients continually seek whilst also providing a compelling solution for installers.

With tactile mechanical buttons and a central LCD display, the sensor-rich AntumbraDisplay panel sets itself apart from other room control interfaces by giving an ideal balance between ease of control and feedback. The clear and easy to use display is capable of showing real-time temperature control from the in-built Thermistor, as well as icons for current function control of the hard buttons. Additionally, different colour finish options are available for the fascia and rim. These colour finishes can be mixed and matched to suit the end-user’s requirements.

The AntumbraDisplay is a stunning panel that redefines the concept of minimalist chic, with numerous features hidden beneath its slick design. This includes presence, light and temperature sensors. These sensors utilise the power of ‘field effects technology’ to automatically detect a person’s presence by their body’s own magnetic field, which in turn wakes up the control panel.

The new Denon HEOS multi-room wireless audio system is the new force in high quality whole home audio for the custom installation market. Due to launch in the UK late this summer, HEOS marks a major new investment for Denon, and brings the opportunity for installers to deliver great sounding audio at different price-point options.

Unlike other wireless multi-room solutions on the market, HEOS works off a home’s Wi-Fi network with support for dual-band 5GHz 802.11n for the best possible connection, also meaning that wired and wireless units can be perfectly integrated within the same system, unlike a dedicated wireless mesh network. An optional HEOS Extender wireless bridge is available to extend the Wi-Fi signal around the home, eliminating the issue of connection drop outs. HEOS comprises three active speaker options – the HEOS 3, HEOS 5 and HEOS 7, the

HEOS Link pre-amp for turning an existing Hi-Fi or AV receiver into a HEOS zone, and the HEOS Amp amplifier which provides any set of stereo speakers with the same system capabilities.

Set up is completed via the dedicated iOS and Android app, allowing an installer to complete the designation of zones within a short space of time. At launch HEOS supports Spotify, Deezer, Internet Radio, or content on any networked PC and can direct these sources to multiple or individual zones.

With the range including three active speakers, there is a solution right for different budgets, with an entry level HEOS 1 coming later this year to complete the line-up.

The HEOS 3 is the most compact speaker in the range is surprisingly powerful thanks to a two channel digital amplifier, twin full-range speaker drivers and a bass port. It is best suited to smaller rooms such as bathrooms

and kitchens, but is flexible in terms of placement with an integral wall mount screw, enabling vertical or horizontal placement. The mid-range HEOS 5, which features four class D amplifiers, two tweeters, two mid-range drivers and a passive bass radiator, produces a loud, balanced sound that is suitable for bedrooms and entrances areas.

The largest of the three speakers, the flagship HEOS 7 includes five class D amplifiers powering two tweeters, two mid-range drivers, a subwoofer and twin bass radiators. The HEOS 7 can easily fill a room, with rich tones and low-end bass. It is quite large, but thanks to its striking curved design, it doesn’t look out of place on a coffee table or sideboard.

A big advantage that the Denon HEOS speakers have over the Sonos system is that it offers aux inputs, allowing sources that don’t have internet access to be plugged in, and also offers seamless music synchronisation between zones, eliminating that annoying echo effect from delays in the system.

YAMAHA YSP-2500 SOUNDBARYamaha has announced the launch of the new Bluetooth-enabled YSP-2500 soundbar. Incorporating 16 array speakers and wireless subwoofer, this new model reproduces impressive and immersive surround sound. The two-unit YSP-2500 is housed in high-grade aluminium chassis and an ultra-refined design.

Featuring Yamaha’s own Intellibeam technology, it measures the size of the room and adjusts the sound field to create a 7.1 surround sound environment. It also features Yamaha’s CinemaDSP technology to deliver a truly immersive and realistic sound field. There is the option to select 10 different programmes, including three movie, three music and four entertainment programmes.

The YSP-2500 includes three HDMI inputs with support for 4K/60p pass-through. A wireless subwoofer and Bluetooth technology have been built into the soundbar to allow music to be streamed from smart devices. The Yamaha HT Controller app enables users to change inputs and select DSP modes, and to fine tune the auto calibration by dragging beams around the room.

AWARD SEASONThe industry award season is well underway. SVI AV FURNITURE

TOP TECHTOTERSAs essential as the AV kit itself, choosing the right racks, stands and mounts for the job is an important process. So lessen the pressure and simply choose from this lot…

Massive TVs and all the essential equipment that slaps high-def images on them look great, but not when they’re just left propped up against the wall or piled up on a sideboard all because some utter amateur forgot that AV stands, mounts and racks exist for a reason, then they just look like a closing down sale at Comet.

Fortunately, this rarely happens (we hope), as any installer worth his or her salt always keeps themselves fully educated on the extensive range of outstanding caboodle that exists for kit, whether it be racks to safely and securely squirrel items away or stands as stunning as the TVs themselves.

What? You’ve not kept yourself fully educated? Well, you’re in luck, the latest in those lines are right here…

The Chief range from Habitech encompasses the S1 series of knock-down racks, designed with self-supporting rack-rails, allowing one person to assemble a rack in less than five minutes, alongside Chief’s E1 series enclosed racks which feature welded steel construction and vented side panels for passive cooling. Next up, extending up to 473mm with rotation of 90° in either direction to a lockable position, the brand’s ROTR series of pull out and rotating racks is designed for ease of installation to enable free access to system components and wiring, both during and after the installation. And finally, the W1 Series sectional wall racks are designed to rest on the floor and attach to the wall. The flexible hinge mechanism enables the rack to be opened from either side and provides convenient access to system cabling whatever the installation environment while Chief’s W2 series fixed on-wall racks feature heavy duty welded steel construction with a reversible locking front door.

The whole range is fully customisable through a wide range of accessories including 19-inch rack-mount shelves, vent panels, blanking panels, brush grommet panels and Cat6 rack-mount patch panels, as well as thermal management/fan panels, surge protected PDUs, cable management tie bars and custom rack-mount kits. Each kit has an adjustable clamp to keep popular

Designed for use within an AV cupboard situation, the Stackable Skeleton Racks provide installers with maximum height configuration flexibility from 15U to 40U; plus the benefits of minimum stock-holding and storage space requirements as the entire structure, complete with screws, removable shelves and blanking panels ships in one UPS box.

Fully modular and stackable, models CFR1615 (15U) and CFR1620 (20U) can be combined to make five different height combinations, 40U, 35U, 30U, 20U and 15U. They are designed specifically for ease of use and installation speed at around 15 minutes per rack – essential qualities for custom installers working on site to tight deadlines. The Skeleton racks may be wall mounted or fixed using the optional wall swivel kit.

For situations where with high-quality performance and ‘over-engineered’ structural integrity are required, or the rack will be visible in a room, the Component Series racks provide the perfect solution. Made from heavy-gauge welded steel and are supplied pre-assembled, complete with blanking panels and vented shelves, which include backstops to ensure AV equipment does not move during use. Quick-release back and side panels allow complete and total access to components and wiring. The racks have two 3U cut-out openings on both top and bottom, as well as a removable 3U panel that can be located above or below the rear rack door for added venting or active cooling flexibility. Swivel casters and adjustable feet allow mobility and stable positioning, and cooling vents on the top and bottom of the rack ensure all equipment stays at the ideal temperature. The self-aligning structure requires only four bolts (included) for quick stacking and comes with additional accessories to make the side panels lockable for added equipment security.

Available in 85-inch (44U), 70.5-inch (36U), 55-inch (27U) and 34-inch (15U) heights, the largest of the four models can support up to 453kg of equipment (dependent upon model) when floor mounted using either the casters or feet. They may also be mounted straight to the wall or via the optional on-wall swivel kit.www.sanus.com

Given the growth in the ‘jumbo’ size TV segment, it is no surprise that NorStone’s range of AV furniture reflects this trend towards larger AV furniture, particularly when it comes to the Cikor – at 2-metres wide it’s a design statement in itself. The entire piece is gloss black with an undulating front panel, offering tremendous storage for AV equipment and peripherals with wide drawers and internal LED lighting.

NorStone’s Baho is another signature design with an ultra-modern, decorative style. With a glass surfaced black or white lacquered finish, as with the Cikor the Baho comes fully assembled with integrated LED and IR control kits. Soft-opening side and front compartments and a roomy 1500mm width make the Baho as functional as it is stylish.

Finally, the NorStone Khalm brings together many of the latest design cues – a high gloss lacquered black, grey or white unit with a swing down front panel and remote-friendly ‘beam-thru’ glass to seclude AV equipment. However, the Khalm chooses to make a feature of its chrome finished steel feet and there is the option to wall mount the unit to achieve a ‘floating’ look.T: +44 (0)1923 205 610www.bbg.eu.com

So, from post installation screen roll for perfect levelling to security options for public areas, the SmartMount XT range boasts impressive benefits for the busy installer and integrator, coupled with zero online presence.

Since first announcing its UK stock programme in the spring, Schnepel has seen sales of its core furniture products increase beyond expectation; something which has delighted Antony Haase, MD of Schnepel’s UK distribution partner, AV Furniture: “Schnepel was founded in Germany in 1969, but is a relative newcomer to the UK, having been introduced here by Demagio in 2011,” he says. “The AV furniture market has undergone a significant change of late, and our first two years was mainly spent brand-building and finding the right lines for our independents. We now have a clear mind-set regarding our UK selection by popularity, and have consequently invested in these products by holding stock at our Crewe warehouse for immediate dispatch.”

Within the premium furniture sector, the company’s UK stock programme is seen as a big step forward, particularly for online retailing, where demand for fast delivery is often key to winning the sale. AV Furniture’s stockholding extends to its other brands: Demagio, Ixos and Mount Massive – all of which are available for next day trade delivery or direct to the end-user with no minimum order quantity. Where applicable, a specialist furniture home delivery company is contracted to deliver premium lines into client’s homes at low cost.

Offering real value, the Schnepel Now range consists of TV and Hi-Fi furniture from their VariC, ELF and S1 ranges and retails from just £250 to £999 RRP.

Take, for example, the new S1-MK Sound cabinet – a complete home theatre furniture solution, at 1667mm wide with full fabric front grille and full-width sound bar capability – the stock model comes finished in new Cuba Libra with Black grille at just £999 RRP. The low-profile ELF Lowboard 170, meanwhile, in White finish with Cuba Libra fronted drawer and two flaps should also be high on any dealer’s wish-list at just £599 RRP.T: +44 (0)1270 586 236E: [email protected]

SVI HOME CINEMA SEATING

CINEAK FABRICSConstantly shaking things up on the arena of cinema seating, Cineak has announced the addition of a unique new and resourceful product line: acoustical transparent fabrics.

Most decorative wall upholstery fabrics are not made with home theatre in mind and are too dense to allow sound to reach the acoustical treatments or speakers behind them. This designer-friendly, specially woven and tested collection of acoustical fabrics features a wide variety exciting design patterns and colours and can be used safely over both acoustical treatments and speakers.

The collection of acoustical transparent fabrics features 18 unique design patterns, with each pattern available in eight to 12 different colour options. All fabrics have been acoustically tested and have passed the requirements and expectations of some of the most-respected acousticians in the world.www.cineak.com

One of the most important aspects of any home cinema setup, because nobody wants to stand through The Hobbit, it’s vital to get your special seating specified early on in the install. Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin…

OH SIT DOWN

As alluded to above, films these days just keep on getting longer and longer. In case of most, this is a good thing as those extra – perhaps otherwise unnecessary – scenes add a sense of value for money, but in the case of anything starting ‘Transformer: The…’ less is most definitely more.

However, with longer films comes a severely protracted posterior time, which is why the smart home cinema sees to the sights, sounds and saddle, providing extremes of entertainment while going easy on the rear-end.

So, if you’re currently planning some cinematic magic for a client, don’t make them settle on simple seats, let them luxuriate on this lot…

PALLADIOThe Palladio range has been specified by Habitech to meet the standards of performance, reliability, comfort and luxury they think your clients will love. Available in four SKUs, it’s the ideal powered cinema seat for those mid-market installs that cry out for the luxury of specialised seating but, until now, have had to make do with a sofa. What’s more it’s likely to be the easiest part of the install and also the most profitable.

Beautifully upholstered in a choice of brown or black real leather, single seat and twin ‘love’ seat options offer excellent standards of operation and control. Inlaid controls in the arm activate super-quite ‘worm-drive’ motors for the most uniform recline possible, coupled with an advanced two-stage mechanism, which powers the footrest extension before the back begins to lower. Everything about the Palladio range – even the little finishing touches like the stainless steel cup holder – will convey to customers the sense that the home cinema you’ve installed is exclusive, immersive and complete. CINEAK FERRIERInclined to be better – pun sadly intended – cinema seating specialist Cineak, first presented its new Ferrier incliner to the world at Amsterdam’s ISE way back in winter, focusing on its special D-Box System.

Featuring a total of four actuators which deliver the full spectrum of motion – pitch, roll, heave, and intelligent vibration – the Ferrier experience lets owners imagine how amazing it would be to feel all the on-screen action alongside the movie stars, hopefully without being sick.

But, of course, while experiencing, say, the Pod Race scene in George Lucas’s shameful Star Wars prequel might be thrilling, key to the whole film/bottom experience is a comfortable seat to sit in, and that’s where Cineak really excels. Featuring a unique dual-motorised incline mechanism which allows the user to adjust the seating position independently for the seat/back and footrest, the articulating headrest also allows the user to adjust the position of the headrest to provide proper head/back support and have the perfect view of the screen, whilst the hand-cut cushioning of high-density foam promises years of comfort and performance.

Finally, adding that unique edge, all Cineak products are custom-made to order, allowing for a vast range of personalisation to fit individual home cinema design and user requirements.www.cineak.com

SVI CRESTRON EVENT

For those unable to fly over to Las Vegas for InfoComm, Crestron was able to bring the best of the show to Surrey. The latest products, innovations and highlights of the event were presented in a recap presentation by the company’s Product Manager, Jan Vanvaerenbergh. It gave integrators a chance to put their questions to Jan and also offer feedback from the front-line on new concepts, InfoComm product launches and existing kit.

The wrap up portion of the afternoon was organised into three aptly named sections: Warm Up Exercises (the meet and greet), Team Talk (offering InfoComm highlights and presentations straight from the show floor), and Final Pre Match Warm Up, where we were able to enjoy some refreshments ahead of Ray Wilkins’ pre-game reflections on the match, tournament as a whole and wider state of the domestic game. Needless to say, despite the superb spread, glorious sunshine and Ray’s wry remarks, optimism for England’s chance from the sector of SVI that cared less was at an a whole new level of ennui.

4K AlreadyThe main focus for Crestron at InfoComm and at this evening’s presentation was, of course, 4K. Following the lead themes of ISE earlier in the year (4K

readiness and certification) Crestron expanded on this at InfoComm, with the next round of 4K product lines for both the commercial and residential sectors.

The company prides itself on being the first and only manufacturer to be able to provide end-to-end 4K certified distribution systems. At InfoComm Crestron took its famed DM Lab equipment, technicians and kit to the show floor to highlight its unique certification of third party 4K devices and also showed live test of its own 4K kit.

With a host of new design and install hoops to jump through, 4K is proving to be a challenge for both manufacturers and installers to get

right first time. As a result, Crestron is using its DM Lab in New Jersey to test third party devices and sources, alongside its own processors, for 4K

compatibility.A Vegas-worthy version of the 4K distribution system we saw at ISE was on

show which showed the latest round of displays that are all now 4K Certified by Crestron. The UK Territory Manager, Phil Breitschadel, pointed out to the wrap-up audience that the Certification programme is an international incentive with a full list of certified 4K kit being available on Crestron’s website which is split into regions.

The Crestron 4K certification ensures that sources and displays meet the demands of a 4K distributed system and the InfoComm distribution system included live 4K switching, including, as the centrepiece, a 260-inch diagonal LED Display with 1.5mm pixel pitch from SiliconCore Technology.

One exciting development that Jan reported on was the latest performance stats on Crestron’s own Cat6 cable. At ISE we learnt how 4K content was good for cable runs of up to 70-metres.

On the booth at InfoComm, and via a recorded demonstration for us at Cobham, we saw the Director of Product Marketing in the US, Tom Barnett, put a selection of cables through their paces. For the successful delivery of 4K content, cable runs need to register no more than one pixel error in every billion sent.

When connected to the test equipment from the DM Lab, Tom demonstrated how different cable varieties failed these criteria when pushed past 70-metres. However, as he tested the new Crestron cable spool we saw that this cable was good for runs of up to 100-metres – bringing it in-line with the same standards as 1080p HD signal delivery.

This is great news for integrators as they will now have greater freedom to complete 4K ready installs across greater distances, and bring out-buildings, pool houses and more under the same central control as the main house on a project.

Further to this, Jan and Phil intimated that 4K over Crestron fibre will be ready in 2015 and is pencilled in for Q2 next year.

On the eve of England vs Costa Rica, Crestron hosted an InfoComm wrap-up session at its Cobham offices, followed by the match in the company of special guest Ray Wilkins MBE. SVI was in attendance and here we offer the best news from Vegas and the worst from Rio…

ISLANDS IN THE STREAMAmong the impressive selection of commercial offerings at the show was an interesting little box could have been easily overlooked. The CEN-NSP-1 provides a wired or wireless interface for iOS devices using either USB or Airplay. For the residential arena this neat little box (about the size of a small notepad) provides multiple ways to easily share music from mobile Apple devices with a fully integrated, multi-room Crestron system.

The first version of the device will allow end-users to easily distribute their audio libraries, but Jan also touched on firmware updates to follow that will look to add direct streaming from internet radio sites and streaming service capabilities.

In addition to the rack-room essentials, Jan also presented details of the new front-facing kit.

A number of new touch panels for the commercial world were shown, including some standalone, no programming required solutions which can be paired with single room processing units. For the residential integrators we saw the latest versions in the TSW touch screen range. These updated screens boast faster processing speeds, voice control and Smart Graphics for Android programming.

The final element from InfoComm that crossed over into the residential realm was Crestron’s AIR Landscape: A weatherproof range of outdoor speakers. The range includes 4- and 6-inch speakers which can be stake-mounted to flower beds to seamlessly harmonise with nature. Completing this range is a subterranean subwoofer that brings high-quality audio at both high and low frequencies to all corners of a property.

Kick offKicking off the second half of the afternoon was former England Midfielder, and Manchester United and Chelsea legend, Ray Wilkins MBE. As we swapped pens and notepads for Belgian beer and waffles, Ray gave us his expert insight into the game ahead, England’s performance to date and then fielded questions from the audience.

Much to Jan’s disappointment (he’s Belgian), Ray was as optimistic about Belgium’s chances as he was about England’s already failed campaign. But then, perhaps the less said about the game the better (at least we didn’t actually lose…) but if you are putting some money down on the final result, here is an inside tip: Ray fancies Germany to win it.www.crestron.eu

SVI CLARITY COMMENT

SVI’s aural expert and all-round hero of Hi-Fi, PHIL HANSEN, brings us the latest communications from the world of the Clarity Alliance…

CLARITY OF THOUGHT

Along with his duties at the Clarity Alliance, Phil Hansen also runs Red Sheep, a successful marketing and PR consultancy operating within and outside the Hi-Fi industry.

Contrary to popular belief it’s not so grim up north. In actual fact the sun was shining and the temperature was very pleasant for the first Clarity Northern Roadshow held last month in Manchester. And with the rising temperature was an equally uphill trend to the consumer confidence graph shown to us by our friends from GfK. Back at its pre-recession levels this figure, together with the overall rise in consumer electronics sales for the latest month and the first time for a while that the UK market has outperformed mainland Europe, set the tone for a very upbeat and positive meeting.

Under the heading ‘Traditional Hi-Fi Resists the 21st Century’, GfK went on to highlight the rising sales of turntables, the value of which has steadily risen for the past four years. This will be welcomed by those who have consistently championed this format as the ‘true high definition audio format’. On the other side of the format fence though, connected audio is definitely showing its continued match forwards with over £330m worth of products sold in the year up until May 2014 – that’s an increase of 50% on the previous 12 months. This trend at both ends of the format spectrum is the lovely irony about the current state of Hi-Fi – the formats of the future would appear to be the almost 100 year old vinyl record and the bang up to date intangible cloud based digital file.

BLURRED LINESAccess to GfK data is one of the many major benefits of Clarity membership for members of the Hi-Fi industry. Knowing what is trending is a vital tool for any business that is planning its activities within a fast moving market and all Clarity companies can have access to these twice yearly updates from GfK.

On the subject of research and planning, the next speaker at today’s meeting posed the following question during the lively debate that took place: “How do we define ourselves as an industry?” We seem content with the natural split into Hi-Fi/Home Cinema retailers and custom installation, but isn’t a significant proportion of Home Cinema work done by custom installers? And if a dealer installs a high end two-channel Hi-Fi system into a customer’s living room, after site visits and pre-planning, is this not a Custom Install job? The lines between Hi-Fi and CI appear, with a little bit of thought, to be somewhat blurred. We all kind of know where one starts and the other stops, but no one has actually defined either state. This could cause problems when we look at our marketing activity – if one wishes to undertake any current situational market analysis or research before commencing a project or business strategy, how can it be done effectively if we don’t actually know what our market is?

This discussion point was raised by guest speaker Peter Aylett of Home Technology Associates. Anyone who knows Peter or has seen him speak at ISE, or the Clarity Conference in February 2014, will know just how fascinating his talks on consumer and technology trends are. Given an hour’s slot, Peter filled

the audience with some very insightful facts about emerging technology trends that should provide real food for thought for all out business plans over the next few years. For example: “Is the control system going to be redundant as different devices begin to talk directly to each other without the need for the interpreter that sits in-between” or “Do we really value access to internet connectivity as the no.1 bare necessity of life?” According to a survey by Disney to mark the launch of The Jungle Book on Blu-ray that was the top answer and no.2 was the television! Hi-Fi, by the way, didn’t make the top 20.

For me one of the most telling images Peter showed, which highlights why we face an uphill struggle to hammer the quality sound message home, was the music reproduction and playback chain: $12,000 of vintage tube microphone plugs into a $4k vintage Class-A microphone preamp, which in turn goes through a £35k compressor, $10k digital converter, $20k Pro Tools rig and finally into a $35k vintage Class-A British mixing desk. The resultant music file is downloaded by the typical music listener for 99 cents and played back through a set of $12 ear buds – now if that isn’t a stark reality check for us, I don’t know what is!

GET SOME CLARITYClarity exists to serve its members and the industry. It is through meetings like this roadshow that we can connect with and stay in touch with the dedicated people who work in it across the country. For our collective businesses to be successful in the face of very stiff competition from the many substitute purchases that our customers can make, we need to remain competitively viable. It is for this reason that we also concentrate our efforts on subjects that can positively affect business performance. One such thing is the complimentary membership of Retra (Radio, Electrical and Television Retailers’ Association) provided for all retail members of Clarity. This provides access to numerous financial benefits that directly help the bottom line such as exceptionally low credit card rates (you will not get them any lower), very competitive consumer credit schemes, great value extended warranties and business legal helpline services. Clarity also augments the offerings from Retra to its members though carefully chosen service providers and today’s meeting heard from a pensions expert, with tips on how to plan for the future in the most effective manner. And with the rising confidence, increased sales activity and exciting new technologies that are emerging for us to offer our customers, that future is all of a sudden looking a lot sunnier and less grim than it has over the past few years.

We hope to see you at the next Clarity Roadshow, in the meantime drop us a line to find out more about membership of the only trade association working for the future of the Hi-Fi sector.

There is one thing certain in life: time passes more quickly as you get older and the months just seem to ebb away. This month I was back on the tools again for a short stint as my bathroom TV packed in and it was time to treat myself to a shiny new Aquavision 22-incher. The screen replaces a 19-inch model from Adnotam so you can imagine I was not looking forward to changing this as grinding out porcelain tiles in what is close to the size of a 3x3 cupboard, was never going to be fun.

The Aquavision models are the screen of choice at DSE as they are probably the easiest to install and have a wonderful picture quality and, more importantly, come with the best viewing angle when you are slouched in the bath. I chose the classic version of the screen which comes with a chrome bezel and a nice black-bordered glass insertion. One new connection on this screen is the USB port, which I was happy to see as the system has a Wyrestorm matrix baluns hidden behind the screen.

After the hard work was complete it was time to power-up the unit, and sitting fully clothed in the empty bath I was suitably impressed by the vibrant picture being produced from the DTV Tuner. The viewing angle is awesome and seems even better than its predecessor. On switching to the HDMI input, which is connected via the Wyrestorm matrix to an Apple TV, the picture took on a new dimension – the HD feed looked amazing, almost 3D-like with a colour depth I have not seen before on a bathroom TV.

There is only one little complaint, and that is that the metal back box and screen mount does not come with M4 bolts. This is the second time I have had to walk to the wholesalers to buy countersunk M4 bolts – come on Aquavision just put four bolts in with the kit!

SONY SIDE UPAs far as Inside CI work went this month, it was time to hit the road again, off with Paul Bayliss from Marata Vision. I love these little trips as we get to connect with the installers on the ground. My destination was Pounds and their Custom Install division, The London Home Cinema Company. They have been involved in the UK home cinema industry since the earliest days of Pro-Logic and laser disc. Pounds itself is actually a third generation family business formed back in 1947, supplying electrical goods, domestic appliances and select furniture. The business moved into installations in 1994, then opened The London Home Cinema Company in 2008 with showrooms in Winchmore Hill, London.

Onsite we met with Managing Director, Martin Redwood, who showed us around the company’s expansive showroom and two demo facilities. The first demo room featured a high-end Sony VPL-VW500ES 4K UHD projector with a drop down 2:35 projection screen which released down in front of a curved LG OLED TV. The room was laid out to show just how elegantly a discrete install can be fitted into a lounge environment. I loved the choice of a 2:35 Scope screen and the Sony has a cool trick of remembering the lens shift position so that you can easily change from 16:9 to 2:35. It’s difficult not to fall in love with Sony’s latest 4K projectors, and I was not disappointed by the amazing image thrown onto the screen.

TEUTONIC TECHWhen we visited, Martin and his team of installers were busy putting the finishing touches to a nice basement cinema install just along the road from the shop, and we were invited for a quick look of the project. The cinema has a tiered floor construction with bespoke seats and a Sony projector firing onto a 2:35 screen. One advantage of building the cinema in the basement is that there’s no light penetration and the room guarantees really good, high-contrast images.

The property itself is a German-made new-build full of cutting-edge tech. The bulk of the house came on the back of a lorry and was constructed in mere days onsite and there is lighting control throughout, whilst the kitchens feature top German-engineering with every gadget you require.

Even with all this technology, the client’s favourite room was by far the cinema. He told us it was a great place to chill-out and that Martin’s team had created a beautifully sounding room, and we can only agree. Here we see yet another top installation company working their magic in the Custom Install market.

Next up in the calendar was Essential Install Live and it was time to get all the crew together again to carry the ever-expanding camera kit. The show is now in its third year, and looking at the six hours we spent at the event and chatting to all our friends from the CI business, we think the format has broad appeal. It was also good to see installers getting actively involved. Guys from the #Liveinstall community manned a couple of booths and offered social network training in conjunction with other install companies.

We do try and push the boundaries a tad too far – nearly 10 videos in six hours is a world record for us. Shame it took another four days to render them – who said technology was straight forward? Ah well, at least, unlike some of these guys at the show, I don’t have to go to InfoComm this year!

APPYOU LIKE ITEasily the most flexible and now the most common way to access automation and AV, the app is chasing the crown of control. Here are some reasons why…

Everyone has an app for something and it’s quite a shock these if you can’t find an app for virtually any part of your life. Whether you want simple games or you want to control and monitor every corner of your home, there is an app out there for it. This trend in apps has provided a huge market place valued at around $25 billion for 2014 so you would be crazy not to be tapping into a portion of this in our technology driven industry.

“The majority of our vendors use apps in some way shape or form,” explains David Meyerowitz, product specialist Invision UK. “These apps are used of a variety of different reasons: Control, Monitoring, Configuration, Browsing and even for firmware updating. There are also many apps out there that help installers on a daily basis, for things like network interrogation, without the need for firing up the computer. Apps provide a very simple but powerful way of performing these functions that you can access anywhere from your preferred mobile device platform.

All the top control solutions have Apple and Android app support and both RTI and Elan g! are no different. RTI Panel app offers a fully customisable experience using RTI’s award-winning Integration Designer programming software, with the RTi Panel offering the same intuitive control experience that RTI remote controls offer, running on an Apple or Android smart phone or tablet device. Providing secure local or remote access to an RTI XP series control processor from any internet connection, the RTiPanel allows for LAN control via Wi-Fi and WAN control off site. Users can view and adjust thermostats, monitor security systems and turn off lights, in addition to controlling their AV electronics, from the office, on vacation, or virtually anywhere in between.

Elan g! offers support for both IOS and Andriod devices via the g!Mobile app. ELAN Home Systems is built on an innovative software architecture that was also created by ELAN. The company’s new programming architecture makes it much easier and faster to integrate new features and graphical user interface enhancements. ELAN engineers have implemented an innovative approach to make it easy to deliver powerful, simple and consistent user interface enhancements on all devices that homeowners use. This allows ELAN to manage a single GUI that provides a consistent interface with full functionality on every g! user interface device including computers, ELAN HR2 remotes and TS in-wall touch screens, iPhones, iPad’s and Android smartphones and tablets.T: +44 (0)1359 270 280E: [email protected]

BOLT FROM THE BLUEFurman has announced it is releasing its BlueBOLT Remote Power Power Management service, a secure, hosted IP system control, in the UK. With BlueBOLT custom electronics installers, integrators and end-users can remotely monitor and control power to connected equipment by accessing power management components from anywhere in the world. From simple system reboots to comprehensive monitoring of power status, BlueBOLT provides the power to control complex AV systems from their most fundamental level – their power source.

A cloud-based technology that’s truly plug-and-play, unlike traditional IP systems that require a dedicated IT professional or programmer to setup, BlueBOLT takes minutes. Simply connect any Furman product equipped with a BlueBOLT IP Communications Card (BlueBOLT-CV1) to the internet and the unit will find its home server and be ready to use with minimal configuration. Pus, since Furman hosts the interface it just needs to be set once regardless of how often the device moves. All devices are controlled through an easy-to-use interface at www.mybluebolt.com – no static IP addresses to obtain, port numbers to remember, or new ISP accounts to setup. Multiple units within a single installation or multiple units across multiple locations can all be accessed and controlled through the single login point.

David Meyerowitz product specialist Invision UK explains: “This feature is so simple to implement and will save integrators both time and money on needless callouts to reset equipment. Simply log into the website put in a few details relating to the CV1 BlueBOLT card and you’re done. You can schedule events to cycle any outlet bank, that is powering a Sky box for example, to reset that device at the same time every day. Winner of the CEA 2014 Mark of Excellence Awards in the ‘Rack or Mount’ category, Wall-Smart’s mounting system makes iPads, iPods and a wide range of control, lighting and air-conditioning keypads and touchscreens disappear in the wall. It offers completely flush, paintable and accessible mounts, custom-made for iOS, Crestron, Control4, Philips Dynalite, NuVo, Sonance, Savant, RTI, Luton Homeworks, Rako and others.

The Wall-Smart system comprises a paintable custom-built frame and back-box, designed to be installed in standard ½-inch (12.7mm) drywall. The device or controller sits in its designated frame and then installs in the back-box using magnets. Each system is customised for home button accessibility, as well as specific audio (speakers and microphone) and thermal requirements. Access for maintenance and device removal is easy through a simple push/release operation and the systems offer built-in security for tablets and pods. After painting in any colour or texture, the frames appear seamlessly integrated with the wall for the ultimate custom-installed, flush-fitted look.

Habitech MD, Jonathan Pengilley, commented: “The iPad has become the control screen of choice for many integrators, and so its seamless integration

with décor should be a high priority for CI pros. We’ve chosen Wall-Smart as a proven, cost-effective and straightforward way to remove forever the wall-acne associated with home automation screens and keypads, in order to achieve the perfectly coordinated blend of electronics and décor demanded by installers, interior designers and their clients.”T: +44 (0)1420 540054www.habitech.co.ukwww.wall-smart.com

ATLAS UNVEIL INTEGRACelestial sphere-toting Titans of the cable-manufacture world, Atlas Cables, have announced the latest addition to their mid-priced analogue interconnect Hyper range, the Hyper Integra. Hand-made at the Atlas Cables factory in Scotland and building on the success of its Element and Equator ranges, the new cable introduces Atlas’ in-house Integra RCA plugs to its Hyper range for the first time, increasing performance and taking the listener ever closer to the music.

The Atlas Hyper Integra is a superior unbalanced cable that consists of a central conductor made up of 90 individual stands of OCC (Ohno Continuous Casting) copper wire with 99.9997% purity. Insulated by an extremely low-loss foamed polyethylene dielectric, the return conductor is a two-layer braid made from a total of 252 strands of Ultra-Pure OFC (Oxygen Free Copper). This double layer of tightly woven wire mesh is wrapped over a PVC foil to provide 100% rejection of RFI (Radio Frequency Interference), ensuring that the music signal is kept free of any external interference or noise. A soft gloss black PVC sleeve covers the conductors.

To retain the Hyper Integra characteristics all the way to the socket, Atlas’ innovative Integra non-magnetic RCA plug employs low mass non-conductive plug technology, which eliminates the detrimental effects of circulating Eddy currents. As with all of Atlas’ analogue audio terminations, the Integra utilises a ‘cold-weld’ interface between the cable and the plug, guaranteeing a free flow of the signal as no solder gets in the way.

Also utilised is Atlas’ own conjugate bracket system, which grips the cable sleeve without compressing it and, therefore, not altering any of the cables integrity whilst entirely rejecting all possible RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). In addition, four sprung asymmetrical sleeves spread on insertion onto an RCA socket, thereby cleaning the plug to socket interface every time the plug is inserted. Finally, the Integra plug’s translucent Polycarbonate non-conductive body offers a deletion-free return signal path. The overall result is a plug/cable combination that offers maximum hi-fidelity with minimal signal deletions.

Commenting on the launch of the Hyper Integra, Kevin Kelly, Managing Director of Atlas Cables, said: “We are delighted with the results achieved from the new Hyper Integra. The introduction of the Integra plug has made major improvements on what was already an excellent cable and is a significant step forward in our quest to create cables that allow the listener to get closer to the music.”T: +44 (0)1563 572 666www.atlascables.com

NEW FOR NUVOLegrand’s natty whole home audio system, NuVo, has been made even nattier thanks to a new firmware release for its digital Player Portfolio that removes the audio delay when connecting with televisions through the player’s local line input. This improvement eliminates all AV synchronisation issues and expands the number of ways the Player Portfolio can be integrated into a home’s entertainment system. The firmware release, version 1.9, is compatible with both the P100 and P200 wireless/wired players, as well as both 3-zone wired players, the P3100 and P3500, and is available for download immediately.

“The audio quality of our Player Portfolio components has been highly praised by users and reviewers since its introduction,” said Walt Zerbe, Product Manager. “This feature has been one of the most highly requested by our dealers, and we’re happy announce we’re now able to use the local line input to perfectly match our superior audio quality with the video from a local TV or other video source.”

According to Zerbe, when a video source is connected to a player through its local line-in jack and is played in that local listening zone, there will be no perceptible delay between the audio and video. If additional zones are added to the listening group, the system detects the change and automatically switches to Global line-in mode.

The new firmware supports all four player components in the company’s Player Portfolio family. Both the P100 and P200 single-zone players are equipped with a single line input, whilst both three-zone players, the P3100 and P3500, are each equipped with three line inputs (one per zone).www.legrand.us/nuvo

A two bedroom apartment on the outskirts of Mayfair has been completely renovated, reconfigured and redesigned by an impressive collaboration of companies, all project managed by expert integrators EasyComp. The property incorporates not only stunning new décor, but also a comprehensive AV installation controlled via URC’s Complete Control system, supplied through award-winning distributor to the CI industry, AWE.

The impressive apartment has been designed to showcase the alliance between property developers MayCon, interior designers and joinery experts KR Interiors and the AV integration/project management skills of EasyComp. Therefore, it was imperative that every finest detail was catered for, with the AV being no exception.

“We specified a URC system on this project for two reasons,” explains Durgesh Sinh, Director of EasyComp. “The first was that we needed a system in which we could completely redesign the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the controllers, which spanned across a hard button URC MX-5000i remote control and several iPads. This was to make the interface match perfectly with the interior and also add a bespoke feel to the system as a whole with real photographs of the apartment in different states, able to be pressed on screen to activate different control functions.

“The second reason was the ease of programming; with URC’s CCP software we know exactly what we’re doing and logic is really simple to program into the system. In addition, once the apartment has been sold, if anything was to ever go wrong we can tap into the property’s system remotely, to troubleshoot offsite, saving us time and money.”

SUPERIOR SOUND & VISIONThree high-end Samsung F8000 screens ranging from 46- to 55-inches in diameter handle visual proceeding in both bedrooms and the living room. With sources such as Sky HD, Apple TV and Pioneer LX55 Blu-ray player running through the URC system, content can be enjoyed and controlled from anywhere in the apartment.

For an impressive audio solution in the main living space a Denon AVR-X3000 was specified (also supplied by AWE). With an impressive 180W x 7 @ 6-ohms of music power, the AVR-X3000 is designed to entertain, with 3D compatibility and 4K video support, alongside a multitude of high-end audio processing technology from Dolby, DTS and Audyssey. The living room setup ensures everything from action movie nights to chilled listening sessions become an impressive spectacle.

SMART & SIMPLEURC’s Complete Control system integrates and controls all modern AV sources within the apartment, either by RS-232 connection or IR blaster. Just one MRX-1 base station was used for the project, demonstrating that an extremely user-friendly, yet bespoke multi-room control system can be created with ease. After all, why complicate things unnecessarily?

INDUSTRY INSIGHTFIBARO

STARTING AT THE VERY BEGINNING, CAN YOU TELL US WHO FIBARO UK ARE AND WHAT YOUR BACKGROUND IS?Fibaro has enjoyed considerable success in Europe over the past few years, but it’s a new technology to the UK. The team over here have all cut their teeth in the traditional CI market and are now applying the lessons we’ve learnt to this new approach to home automation. We’ve been exhibiting at trade shows across the UK in Q1 and Q2 of this year and so far Fibaro has been extremely well received, so it’s an exciting time for us!

WHAT MAKES THE FIBARO SYSTEM SO DIFFERENT?Fibaro is born from a philosophy that everyone should be able to benefit from the safety, energy efficiency and lifestyle improvements that home automation offers. It’s affordable, very user-friendly and built around a revolutionary new non-invasive installation procedure that makes it retro-fittable into any building – without the need for expensive and disruptive structured cabling works.

Where many systems focus primarily on the control of AV equipment, Fibaro is a complete solution for the monitoring and management of living and working spaces and all of the devices within them. So, if you forget to turn your iron off and leave the room, Fibaro can switch it off for you and prevent a fire. If you go out to work and leave a window open, Fibaro can send you a push notification and warn you. Fibaro can isolate your electronics and water supplies in the event of a flood, preventing damage to your home and belongings, or intelligently optimise your lighting and heating based on your habits to save you money.

HOW DOES FIBARO BENEFIT INSTALLERS OVER OTHER OPTIONS?Because of Fibaro’s affordability and retro-fittability installers can take advantage of markets that were previously beyond the scope of CI. Assisted living, sustainable developments, social housing, the retrofit and refurbishment markets – all of these have enormous untapped potential and Fibaro opens them wide up.

To put it in context, CEDIA reported in 2012 that the UK CI industry was worth around £875 million in total. In the same year, a white paper by White Oaks put the value of the assisted living market at £10.1 billion. There’s enormous scope for growth for installers who are savvy enough to take advantage of these new and emerging markets.

Meeting key environmental legislation like the Energy Efficiency of Buildings Act and EN 15232 is becoming crucial for developers, and consequently they’re increasingly asking for BMSs that help them to achieve this. Fibaro is a very cost effective solution for meeting the key criteria of these acts.

HOW DOES FIBARO BENEFIT HOME OWNERS OVER OTHER OPTIONS?Fibaro is about actually automating the home so that everyday actions are streamlined or take place in the background without the need for user-input. You can still control devices from your phone or tablet, but the real benefit of Fibaro over other options is in setting up logical responses to stimuli.

You could configure the system to turn off all of your electronic devices when you leave the house to save power, or disable your heating for you if you go away on holiday and forget. You could use Fibaro to boil an IP kettle for your cup of tea as your arrive home, or to make a CCTV camera snap a photo every time your doorbell gets pressed and email it to your phone. You could measure natural light levels in real-time and use the information to adjust your artificial sources and optimise your energy efficiency. We’ve seen users wiring various sensors into the additional slots on RGBW Controllers to make parking sensors and water quality meters for fish tanks – the only limit is your imagination.

FIBARO’S COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER KIT IS QUITE THE SELLING POINT, BUT HOW DIFFICULT WILL IT BE TO KEEP UP TO DATE WITH NEW PRODUCTS?It’s hard to say what challenges tomorrow’s products might present, but Fibaro’s modular architecture means it can be adapted and built upon for a huge range of applications – or completely repurposed if required. One of the developments in the pipeline is a modular system of plug-ins for the Home Center Lite that will allow users to add support for new devices as they become available. Technology is constantly evolving so we have to do the same.

YOU SAY FIBARO IS THE ‘FUTURE OF HOME TECHNOLOGY’, BUT HOW DO YOU SEE FIBARO DEVELOPING IN THE FUTURE?We can’t tell you much, but the Fibaro R&D team have been working on some pretty interesting projects – a back-up battery for the Home Center Lite that will allow it to remain operational in the event of a power failure; a GSM module to bridge the system on the mobile network – there’s even been talk of integrating services into the Fibaro “internet of things”, so the system could notify a plumber in the event of a flood or even contact the emergency services if a fire is detected. You’ll have to keep an eye on the website and social media to find out what’s coming next! www.Fibarouk.co.uk
