What Is This?

What Is This Well, that’s a good question…. It’s smaller than a breadbox. It’s black and white and red all over. It’s the School of Visual Arts’ latest Cartooning Magazine, celebrating the achievements of our 2015 graduates in Illustration and Cartooning.

“What is Cartooning?” Another good question. (Do not confuse it with animation. We’re all touchy

about that!). I thought I had a clear definition of the art form 15 years ago when I took on the responsibility as chair. I could not have imagined then how the field has grown, broadened, hybridized and become so inclusive of all voices, from the biggest corporations to the tiniest outsiders. The stories have changed, the way they are being told is different and unusual, and their physical form can take myriad shapes and mediums. But although the genre of “comics” has added girth and brawn, there is still an intimacy to the community of artists who are deeply supportive, nurturing, and well…nice! Unlike the world of high stakes blue-chip fine art foolery, the cartooning world, because of its intensely personal nature, and artistically grueling techniques, seem to keep the practitioners focused. Most projects of merit are years in the making with often very little monetary reward. To me, at this time, the cartoonists may be the last artistic remnants of the bohemians or avant-garde: Pure soldiers working the Bristol board trenches, and in lieu of grenades, black and ink and nib in hand!

What is cartooning? Telling stories that matter with pictures and works that count. Comics are way cool—cooler than ever before.

This new collection of excerpts and short works shows these students depth and range. They take their art form very seriously Believe me when I tell you that their work will be noticed everywhere before too long. In cartooning, there is great meritocracy: if you build it, they will come! And these blissfully talented and ambitious young women and men know how to build compelling worlds and spin memorable tales.

Thanks to all the efforts of my entire faculty, particularly the portfolio instructors: Keith Mayerson, David Mazzucchelli, Gary Panter and Carl Potts, for assisting me in the selection and arrangement of this anthology. We also thank President David Rhodes for his vision and support of this ongoing document of our students’ achievements.

What is this? It’s simple. This is very good stuff, made by the hand to go straight to your heart!
