When one looks back at that “Golden Age” of comics, much of the work looks as quaint as Dick Tracy’s wrist radio. Tarzan’s jungle is papier-mâché, and the only drama is melodrama. Almost exclusively created by straight white men, the adventures were often sexist, racist and homophobic. “Quaint” is actually rather a kind of adjective.

Now that we are in our “Platinum Age”, things are very different. Voices from all different perspectives are the norm, sur-realism and realism have found their way into the canon, and conservative agendas are on the outer fringe (where they should be kept).

It has never been a more exciting time for a cartoonist. The digital age has eliminated many confining categories of publishing, and yet the handmade intimate nature of a comic has never seemed so satisfying and radical. In over a decade of looking after this department, I have seen the demographics of the students broaden immensely, and their intellectual ambitions grow.

I’m sure you will look at our latest iteration and you’ll agree

with me. These are not our grand-pa’s comics. They reflect our times

with bold clarity and beautiful drawing. The real adventure, of course, is the process of creation and my faculty and I are amazed by the deep well of talent we have had the pleasure to help through the jungle.

I would like to thank the efforts of the Senior Portfolio instructors, Keith Mayerson, David Mazzucchelli, Gary Panter and Carl Potts for participating in the selection and editing process. I am indebted to their keen vision.

We also thank President David Rhodes for his vision and support of this ongoing document of our students’ achievements.
