SV2 Sacramento Venture Philanthropy Presentation 09102009TRANSCRIPT
a venture philanthropy Partnership
SV2’s mission is to build the
philanthropic capacity of our donor-partners, the
organizational capacity of our grantees, and our
community’s capacityto catalyze social change
SV2
What is Venture Philanthropy? Venture philanthropy works much like venture capital –
we invest not only money, but also our time, expertise, and networks in building the capacity of nonprofit organizations
All of SV2’s work is led and driven by our engaged donor-partners
Background on SV2: SV2 was founded by Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen,
Stanford faculty in Philanthropy, in 1998 as part of Community Foundation Silicon Valley (CFSV),now Silicon Valley Community Foundation
At our tenth anniversary last year, we became an independent nonprofit organization
In November, 2008 the Silicon Valley Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals named SV2 “Outstanding Philanthropic Organization of 2008”
Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen and former CFSV CEOPeter Hero

Team Scharpf Family Giving Plan Goals We wanted to invest in organizations that focused on education and
children. We wanted the organizations to be well managed, efficient and truly
making an impact in their area of focus. We wanted to volunteer and be part of the organization. Most of all, we wanted to know that we were making an impact.
Questions Which organizations are making an impact in the areas we are
focusing on? Which organizations are coming up with new processes and ideas to
address the problems we face? Which have spark plug leaders and strong teams? Which are at an inflection point where our investment will really
make a difference? What kind of grant will help them the most? 1-year, 3-year,
matching, capacity building, or program related?

a budget of $250,000 to $2 million and from 2 school sites to over 15 sites in 4 years
Fresh Lifelines for Youth (At-risk youth) Strengthened organizational capacity enabled FLY

Silicon Valley Children's Fund (At-risk foster youth) SV2’s funding is enabling the Literacy Initiative
at the Children's Fund to grow and ensure that every middle school foster youth in Santa Clara County has the opportunity to read at grade level
The Reach Institute (Education) SV2’s grant will assist Reach in becoming an
accredited program that will provide an in-school teaching credential program.
