We were fortunate to see growth in our facilities, Partner with Youth Campaign, Santa Run and in the scholarships we provided to the community. Many changes were implemented in 2011 to improve our YMCA and to increase the positive impact we have on the children and families who make up our members and program participants. In the spring, we started a major renovation of the Pierson Road locker rooms and pool area. Our Partner with Youth Campaign was another area where we truly grew stronger together. By working together as a community, we were able to raise $410,000 to support our financial assistance programs, greatly surpassing our goal of $375,000. This success is only possible because of the efforts of our staff, members, volunteers and community partners. The 2nd annual Santa Run also doubled in size this year, with 1,375 participants. Again, this event’s success is largely due to the numerous sponsors and volunteers who support us. At the YMCA of Greater Flint we are fortunate to have amazing community support. This support has allowed us to serve thousands of youth and families in our community through the variety of memberships and programs we offer. We look forward to continuing to grow stronger, together as a community in 2012. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT HEALTHY LIVINGAsperger’s Syndrome and Autism CampPiloted at YMCA Camp Copneconic Approximately 1,000 children have been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder in Genesee County. With a deficiency in special needs programming in the area, YMCA Camp Copneconic and a group of dedicated volunteers decided to do something about it.

2011 saw the successful pilot of a day camp program called POWER Camp (Peer Outreach With Extraordinary Results). This program took place July 5th – 8th, and provided 50 children ages 8 through 17 with Asperger’s Syndrome and High Functioning Autism a chance to experience the joys of a summer camp experience with their peer friends.

The camp philosophy creatively matched a neurotypical child with a youth challenged by Asperger’s Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. All campers were simply allowed to enjoy nature and camp’s beautiful grounds as any child would. They shared adventures with their peers that helped them grow and expand their social experiences. Through carefully planned activities, all kids learned leadership skills, built friendships and developed a strong value for caring for others. This nurturing environment allowed children to celebrate their uniqueness, to take pride in their strengths and to just be a kid!

A special thank you to the Loeb Charitable Trust for their $5000 donation to support this exciting new program.

Camp Copneconic 2011 saw a magical summer come alive at YMCA Camp Copneconic for thousands of children. Memories were abounding as campers enjoyed the wide array of outdoor experiences full of laughter, new skills and plenty of friendships. 1,769 summer campers experienced the daily adventures of our Holiday Hills Day Camp program. 2114 resident campers will never forget the overnight fun and memories that helps campers learn about values of respect, caring, honesty, and responsibility. Amongst those campers, 473 children came on camp scholarship. Just over 1,000 campers with chronic illnesses came to camp courageously through our partnerships with the American Diabetes Association, Camp Quality Cancer Camp, National Kidney Foundation, Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, and Hurley Asthma Camp

2011 also saw an increase in school participation at Camp Copneconic hosted outdoor education programs of 139 elementary and middle schools from all over Lower Michigan. This was supplemented by 126 youth retreat and conferencing groups that made weekends at Camp Copneconic a quite happening place! Thank you to all you made 2011 a year to remember.

Santa Run - Presented byIt was sight to be seen, on December 3rd as the 1,375 Santa’s lined up for our 2nd annual YMCA Santa Run/Walk. This impressive group was more than double the number of participants in our inaugural event and included children in strollers, pets dressed in costumes, and Santa’s of all ages, shapes and sizes. Each participant received a Santa suit to wear for the event and many veterans added extra decorations and embellishments to their costumes. The 5k and 1 mile routes took participants through local neighborhoods, Mott Community College and the cultural center before returning to the Y for cookies and hot chocolate. Along the route, participants were serenaded by local church and children’s choirs and even had an opportunity to stop for milk and cookies.

In addition to spreading smiles and Christmas cheer, the event raised $30,000 for our Partner with Youth Campaign, and over 200 toys and clothing items were donated for Toys for Tots and Carriage Town Ministries. The success of the event was largely due to the numerous sponsors:

Pierson Road Locker Room Renovation In order to meet the needs of our members and improve the experience we are able to provide to them and our guests; the YMCA began a 1.2 million dollar locker room renovation at the Pierson Road branch in the spring. This much anticipated renovation, took the entire summer to complete, but the results are impressive. The men’s and women’s locker rooms feature new lockers, ceramic tile, additional private showers, and new locker benches. In addition to the completely renovated men’s and women’s locker rooms, a new hallway was added which will allow our families and school groups the ability to directly access the pool without walking through the men’s or women’s locker rooms. The pool area also received several improvements, the pool deck was enlarged to accommodate a new whirlpool and the ceiling, lighting and ventilation

were all improved. A new mobile chair lift was also added which will allow us to accommodate members and guests who need that assistance to use our pool or whirlpools. The new renovation opened in the fall and we feel that these new improvements added enormous value to our membership and enhance everyone’s overall Y experience.

2011 HIGHLIGHTSFlint Community Schools 4th GradeSwim Safety Program The YMCA of Greater Flint was fortunate to receive a grant from the Ruth Mott Foundation to provide every 4th grader in the Flint Community Schools with swim safety lessons. The program, which began on October 24th, is designed to educate students in safety and rescue techniques that could be potentially save a life. Throughout the program students gain hands-on experience in making a water rescue and learn basic swimming strokes. Students completing the program receive a certificate acknowledging their accomplishment and more importantly, the skills necessary to ensure their safety in and around water. Program sponsored by the Ruth Mott Foundation and the YMCA of Greater Flint Partner with Youth Campaign.

YMCA and Woodlawn Park Community Partnership One of the many ways the Y staff and members supported our community was through the park tenders program sponsored by the Ruth Mott Foundation. As part of the program, the YMCA “adopted” Woodlawn Park in a neighborhood near the Downtown facility. Throughout the summer the Y staff and members maintained the park; ensuring that the park was available for children and families in the community. A park clean-up day was held in

June during this event several repairs and improvements were made at the park including: painting

and repairing the playgroup equipment, cleaning up trash and debris, planting flowers, installing new benches, and adding woodchips underneath all of the equipment. All of the staff and members hard work and effort transformed this rundown park into a beautiful, colorful, and safe park for our community.

25th AnnualYMCA of Greater Flint Golf Scramble This year’s annual golf scramble was unique in several regards. This year marked the silver anniversary for the event, 25 years of great fellowship, golf and celebration of a shared mission. A record number of participants were also on hand with 116 golfers (29 teams) taking part in the event. For the third consecutive year, Spring Meadows Country Club played the role of host and delivered on expectations with top notch accommodations. Spring Meadows was a fitting host as the club was the home site of the first YMCA golf scramble some 25 years ago.

A special thanks goes out to King Par for their strong support of the event, donating over $7,000 in prizes including an embroidered YMCA / King Par golf shirt to each golfer. One of the many highlights during the dinner was the presentation of the Woody Skaff Sportsmanship Award to Jeff Snider for his support of the event and his strong commitment to the YMCA’s mission. Event winners were also announced and recognition was given to all who helped in making this year’s event a success. Thanks to all those who supported this wonderful event, the YMCA of Greater Flint raised $8,045 dollars for the Woody Skaff Scholarship Fund and the Partner with Youth Campaign!

We look to build on the success of this year’s event and promise to make the 26th Annual Golf Scramble one you will not want to miss out on. The 2012 event is planned for Monday, June 11 at Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden. Save the date and plan on attending and help support YMCA youth programs.
