Indus Towers – An introduction

Indus Towers, One of the world largest telecom tower company, was incorporated in November 2007, as a joint venture between entities of Bharti Group including Bharti Infratel Limited, Vodafone India, and Aditya Birla Telecom. Indus Towers offers passive infrastructure services to all telecom operators and other wireless services providers.

Presence in 15 Telecom Circles out of 22 Tower: for mounting operator antennae at an appropriate height

- Passive physical infrastructure necessary to house the active equipment (BTS, transmission link, microwave antenna)

Power: for providing uninterrupted energy supply to telecom equipment

- Innovative energy solutions for cost effectively powering our customers’ active equipment

Space: for housing telecom and power equipment - Required space from residential/commercial property owners (landlords)

at strategic locations

Our product and service portfolio is designed around three core elements:

Indus areas of Operations

We touch 600 million people, multiple times a day, every day

3 out of 5 calls in India are made through an Indus site

Enabling un-interrupted and seamless mobile connectivity

Power @ Telecom Site

Supply

Distribution

Consumption

Operation of telecom tower site is categorized in three parts:

4

Power @ Telecom Site - Supply

Telecom network is obligated to maintain QoS of 99.99% uptime. Power at site plays a pivotal role to achieve the same.

Multiple equipment leading to high capex cost

Power sources at site 1. Grid - as main source

2. Battery – Primary Backup of Power (~ 1.5 time expensive than Grid Power)

3. DG – Secondary Backup of Power ( ~3 times expensive than grid power)

Good and reliable grid may play pivotal role in low cost telecom rollout.

5

Power @ Telecom Site - Distribution

Sharing is the strategy to be adopted

• Conversion ( 220 Vac to 48 Vdc) • Highly efficient rectifiers & Power management systems deliver Uninterrupted

48Vdc.

• Sharing • Multi-operator multi technologies are powered through multi channel distribution

system with consumption monitoring. • Sharing utilities i.e. Air-conditioning, FCU etc.

Sharing scope to be enhanced to cover all telecom equipment at site

6

Power @ Telecom Site - Consumption

Telecom tower works with multiple technologies e.g. 2G, 3G, 4G, LTE etc. As technology has evolved the new BTS which are more efficient. The typical power consumption in past few years has dropped by ~ 60% .

Telecom Tower operator are going for maximum OD sites.

Power consumptions of multiple utilities at site • Outdoor Sites ( OD) - Highly efficient ,Less power consumption. • Indoor Sites ( ID ) - Less efficient Required air-conditioning for cooling ( ~ 30% of site Opex is of air-conditioner) r

• Combined (ID+OD) – Mix of both

More efficiency with new innovations

Energy Efficiency

a) Optimize Technology consumption

• Energy efficient BTS

• High temperature OD BTS

b) Reduction of Power Loss

•High efficient rectifiers

•Intelligent PMS

•High COP / Inverter ACs

c) Utility Optimization

•ID to OD conversion

•Replacement of air-conditioner with air cooling.

d) Passive sharing

•Shared power plant and PMS

•Energy efficient batteries

•Shared DG

9

Zero Diesel

~ 100000 tower sites of Telecom Industry are already diesel free

Diesel Reduction Diesel Elimination

Battery Improvement e.g. VRAL+, Hi Temp outdoor battery etc

Extra battery capacity at site. Fast Charging & Energy Efficiency battery

e.g. Li-Ion battery. Mobile Battery Solutions

ID to OD Conversions. High temperature BTS. Air cooling Solution e.g. NCU, NCU-T,

SCU, FCU etc Efficient air conditioners e.g. Hi-COP,

Inverter AC etc

Green Grid • The Electricity sector in India has one National Grid with installed capacity of 330.15 GW (as on 31 July 2017).

Where as Renewable plants constituted only 30.8% of total installed capacity. Further there is large gap in electricity demand vs supply of the grid. In order to full fill this gap there is need to increase the renewable energy sources supply in Grid. This will ensure continuous and uninterrupted electricity supply to all households, industries and commercial establishments and further it will to reduce the carbon emission.

Going Off site Green Industry Deploying Renewable Energy sources at feasible sites/locations.

• Solar Power at feasible location

• Bio Mass

• Fuel Cell

• Wind Energy

• Energy efficient Battery- Li-Ion.

Challenges. • Space constraint

• Rapid urbanization/Clear south.

• High capex at distributed vis a vis solar forms.

Adoption of scalable & feasible options to go green

Green Source of Power- Smart & Green Grid & Green Power generation

Way Forward Adoption of scalable & feasible option to Go Green Carbon Neutral

12

Policy Intervention

Dedicated uninterrupted green grid ( essential utility).

Greater availability of grid for telecom sector.

Incentivisation for advance & efficient energy storage Solution ( Li-Ion)

Incentivization for Green grid power consumption.

Green power at site through net metering Group net metering open access. Distributed solar generation.

Reducing carbon foot print

Direct- Incentive for Sustainable telecom. Indirect Combined
