Sustainable / Environmental Problems Caused by the Textiles & Fashion Industry There are about 8,000 harmful chemicals are used in the fashion, textile and footwear industry to turn raw materials into final products. These chemicals cause health problems to the people who work with them, especially as many of them do not have protective equipment. Many of the chemicals also end up in freshwater systems like rivers, streams, lakes, etc.... Clothing brands and factories who want to ‘do fashion better’ should be very worried about the amount of chemical used in the Fashion & Textiles industry and must look at ways to be more environmentally friendly by using sustainable [eco friendly] fibres & fabrics; use natural dyes, insecticides & fertilisers; and better & safer ways of making fabric andclothing. The fashion industry creates around 13 kilograms of fashion wastefor every person on the planet every year. That waste is equivalent to a landmass larger than the size of France. To stop this, the industry must rethink and redesign the way products are made, used and got rid of. The average person now buys 400 per cent more clothingthan 20 years ago. Only 1% of clothes are recycled into new clothing each year, and only 20 per cent of textiles are recycled at all. A huge amount of waste takes place while making fabric and clothing in factories. 3 and 5% of factories throw away clothes that are made wrong or by mistake. Most of textile waste ends up in landfill or is incinerated[burnt]. In poorer countries where there is no waste management systems like Bangladesh, there are huge amounts of fashion waste are created.
