1. Why is it so important to protect the environment in Madagascar? – perhaps even more so than UK etc.

2. Why it is important to have sustainable development not just conservation? (why do the locals need to make money / get food from the land?)

3. Why would enforcing conservation be almost impossible in Masoala?

4. HOW can Madagascar ‘do’ sustainable development – and for each thing, what makes it sustainable? [economically, socially AND environmentally]

5. Which would you do and why?

The most important areas for biological diversity were those that were also least accessible. These areas were included within the park, where no-one is allowed to harm the trees or animals. Local park rangers were employed to try and ensure that this happened.

The accessible areas were not included in the park, encouraging sustainable development by allowing locals to harvest timber and other forest products.
